Happy May everyone! In this issue, we celebrateMilitary Spouses and everything that they do to support their Families and their Soldiers. In 1984,

President Ronald Reagan declared the Friday beforeMother’s Day each year to be Military Spouse Appreciation

Day in honor of the “countless personal sacrifices” that MilitarySpouses make to support the Armed Forces. Instead of just celebrating Spousesfor one day, Fort Campbell is celebrating for a week! Check out the events onpage 4. You will also find information about Military Spouse Tours on page 14 aswell as other great articles throughout the magazine.

As a Military Spouse myself, I understand that it is not always easy. Dealing with deployments and separations are difficult. To be supportive andstrong, to live independently and self sufficiently, and then be able to transitionback to being part of a couple is also hard. The great part is that it is also very rewarding. I am so proud to be a Military Spouse and proud of my husband andwhat he does for our country every day. I am also proud of other MilitarySpouses. I see them starting businesses, volunteering, and lending a helpinghand to others. The list of accomplishments and accolades goes on. I hope thatyou take the opportunity to thank a Military Spouse, not just this month, butthroughout the year.

We must also take time to remember those who are no longer with us.Memorial Day, or Decoration Day as my Grandmother called it, is celebrated onMay 31. She always instilled in us the respect of our ancestors, relatives, andthose who had served. We took time every year to lay flowers and put flags ontheir places of rest. Although some of us think of Memorial Day as a day for picnics and barbeques, we must never forget what Memorial Day represents.

The brave die never, though they sleep in dust:Their courage nerves a thousand living men.~Minot J. Savage

Celebrating Our Military Spouses

Melissa Wells, [email protected]

Gardening tip: May is the time when you can really start planting everything. The soilshould be warm enough and the danger of frost passed. Now is the time toplant tomatoes, corn, and anything else that you might enjoy in your vegetable garden. You can also try companion planting. There are numerousbooks and websites that will tell you which plants are beneficial to each otherand which ones should not be planted together. For example, plant someradish seeds with your cucumbers. Radishes are helpful in repelling insects. Some flowers are also great companions to vegetables. Mix these in for abeautiful and multi-purpose garden!

Before you head out to the backyard, youshould refresh your memory with thesesafety tips. According to Fort CampbellCAM Regulation 420-24, 14.4, barbecuegrills shall not be used indoors, on porches,in garages, or carports. Even if you do notlive on post, these are good guidelines tofollow:• Barbecue grills should be kept under

close supervision of an adult at all times when in use.

• Barbecue grills shall be located at least 10 feet away from combustible materials and/or all buildings when in use.

• When use has been completed, hot coals shall be quenched with water or covered with a noncombustible cover to prevent sparks or hot coals from being scattered by the wind.

Fort Campbellprovides these guidelinesso that everyone can have a safe and enjoyablegrilling experience. If youhave any questions, please call the Fort Campbell FireDepartment at (270) 798-7171.

Before you evenbegin to grill, there areprecautions you shouldtake. Always check yourgrill thoroughly for leaks, cracking, or brittleness.

For gas grills, clean out all hoses and tubesleading from the propane tank to theburner. Store and use your grill on a largeflat surface that cannot be burned such asconcrete or asphalt. Make sure your grill isat least 10 feet from your house, garage,or any plants. Have a fire extinguisherhandy at all times. In most instances, a hose will work just fine.

As always, children’ssafety comes first. Be sure tokeep them away from firesand grills. Some Familiesestablish a safety zonearound barbecues. A chalkline would work great forthis purpose. Kids can havesome fun and learn to respect therules of barbecue safety all at thesame time.

While you are grilling, besure to use long handled utensils andflame resistant mitts. Never use any flammable liquid, other than barbecuestarter for the proper grill, to start or refresh a fire. Keep alcoholic beveragesaway from the grill; they are flammable! And always remember, never leave a

grill unattended.

Of course, if you are without a grill this summer, don’t feel left out. You can rentone from MWR’s Gear-to-Go! Gear-to-Gorents by the day, weekend, or week.

Patrons can choose from smokers, mesquite grills, super cookers, pig roasters, grill or propane barbecues, and

fish cookers. Whatevertype of grilling is on the

menu this summer, Gear-to-Go can help.If you would like to

reserve your grill orhave questions, please call Gear-to-Go at (270) 798-3919.

anxiety levels usually run high. The important thing to understand is that dealing with deployments is a differentprocess for everyone. Keeping yourself active and involved is essential in adjustingto this process.

Mental Health America continuesits tradition to celebrate May as MentalHealth Month, which began in 1949. Withincreasing economic troubles piled on tothe stress of work and Family demands, more and more Americans are suffering. This year, the theme “Live Your Life Well”challenges Americans to promote wholehealth and wellness in homes, communities, and schools.

During these difficult times, Mental Health America wants Americans toknow that there are tools that can buffer theeffects of stress and help them cope betterwith the many challenges they face. Fromrelaxation techniques, to journaling exer-cises, to simple ways to get better sleepand improve eating habits, the materials offer a wide range of tools tobuild resiliency and well-being. BecauseMay is National Mental Health Month,Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation(MWR) would like to give you some resources for coping with deployment. (Retrieved March 19, 2010 from Mental Health Americawebsite http://www.nmha.org/go/may)

If you are looking to get involvedin the Fort Campbell community while yourSpouse is deployed, Army Community Service (ACS) has manyresources for you. The Pre and PostDeployment Spouse Battlemindclasses are outstanding for anyonewho is interested in learning aboutthe issues Soldiers and Spouses faceduring and after deployment. Thegoals for the class are to identify common areas of concern or conflict

that Military Spouses andSoldiers experience; lookat issues dealing with deployment from both theSoldier and the Spouse’spoint of view; providestrategies to enhance Family resilience before and during deployment; and identify cues for when toseek help and available resources. Theclass is meant to be very interactive and isconducted in a small setting of no morethan 15. Lots of discussion and small groupwork is done.

Another channel for dealing withdeployment is through Family ReadinessGroups (FRGs). FRGs are run by the Soldier’s unit. They offeran immeasurable wealthof information about theSoldier’s unit, activitieson post, and muchmore. Volunteering foryour FRG and talkingwith people who are insimilar situations canoften help relieve ten-sion and can give you a positive outlet tohelp yourself as well as others.

Deployments can be extremelyoverwhelming. Sometimes you just need totalk without the worry of judgment. In those cases, Military Family Life Consultants (MFLC), chaplains, and Military One Source are all available to you.The MFLC program is designed to provideanonymous, confidential support to Soldiers and their Family Members, especially during deployments. The program serves Active Duty, mobilized National Guard and Army Reserve Soldiers, and their respective Families. The programis free. Chaplains can also be contacted at the installation chapel and are a private

source for people to talk to. For information on these and the above programs, please call ACS at (270) 956-2935.

Military One Source offers services where no question is too small ortoo big. Whether you are preparing for anew baby, dealing with relationship issues, getting out of debt, or buying your first car,Military One Source can help. You can find

referrals to military andlocal community resources, educationalbooklets and audiorecordings at no cost toyou, and much more.Military One Source is available 24 hours aday, seven days aweek, and 365 days a

year. Call (800) 342-9647 to speak directlyto a qualified staffer. You can always visitwww.militaryonesource.com to learn abouttheir services.

If all of that is not enough to getyou out of the house and dealing with a deployment in a positive way, MWR hasmany facilities and activities to keep youbusy. Gyms, pools, and intramural sportsteams are available to get your bloodpumping. The R.F. Sink Library has books,DVDs, and CDs for you as well. Arts &Crafts can get your creative juices flowingwith craft classes. Hooper Bowling Centerand Cole Park Golf Club both offer activities for everyone. During deployments, MWR offers a Spouse Discount Card. The card gets you discountsat various MWR locations on Fort Campbell. For more information about the MWRSpouse Discount Card, please call (270) 798-7535.

Coping with deployment is never easy. People experience a widerange of emotions. Hopefully the resourcesfound in this article will help you through arough time. Just remember, you are not in this alone.

Chocolate Angel Torte

Pinapple Upside Down Cake

Warm Walnut Brownie Pudding

Cake:

1 (9 inch) angel food cake (you can

buy these already prepared)

1 (8 oz.) container whipped topping

(thawed and divided)

Filling:

1 (6 oz.) package semisweet chocolate

morsels

3/4 cup sour cream (at room temperature)

2 tsp strong black coffee (optional)

1 tsp vanilla extract

To prepare filling, melt chocolate morsels in the top of a double boiler over

simmering water. Add sour cream to melted chocolate, and stir mixture

until smooth and well blended. Stir in vanilla and coffee, if desired.

Let cool until the mixture thickens slightly (about 10 min).

Using a serrated knife, split the prepared cake horizontally into 3 layers.

Place the bottom layer on a serving plate and spread with half of the

chocolate mixture. Top with the second layer and spread with remaining

chocolate mixture; place remaining cake layer on top.

Reserve 1/2 cup of whipped topping. Spread remaining topping over the

top and sides of the cake. Dollop the reserved 1/2 cup into “clouds” on

top of the cake. Chill for one hour and serve.

1/2 cup pineapple spreadable fruit

2 tsp grated lemon peel

2 Tbsp lemon juice

1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

1 (8 oz.) can crushed pineapple in juice

(undrained)

1 cup plus 1 Tbsp all purpose flour

1 1/2 tsp baking powder

1/4 tsp salt

1/8 tsp ground nutmeg

1/2 cup cholesterol free egg product

1/3 cup low fat milk

1 Tbsp low fat sour cream

1 tsp vanilla

Heat oven to 375 degrees. Grease a 9x13 inch spring

form pan with non-stick cooking spray. Mix spreadable fruit, lemon peel,

lemon juice, cinnamon, pineapple and 1 Tbsp flour together and spread into

the pan. Mix the remaining flour, baking powder, salt and nutmeg in a

medium bowl, stir in remaining ingredients and pour over the fruit mixture.

Bake for 25 – 30 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool for 10 minutes

then loosen and remove the sides of the pan. Invert cake onto a plate

but let the pan remain over the cake for a few minutes. Remove the

bottom of the pan and serve.

Brownie:

1 cup all purpose flour

3/4 cup sugar

1/4 cup lightly packed unsweetened cocoa powder

2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 cup buttermilk

1/4 cup unsalted butter

(melted)

3/4 tsp vanilla extract

1 cup chopped walnuts

(toasted)

Whipped topping

Syrup:

3/4 cup packed dark brown sugar

1/4 cup lightly packed unsweetened

cocoa powder

5 tsp instant espresso powder

1 2/3 cup warm water

1 1/2 Tbsp vanilla extract

Pinch of salt

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. For syrup, combine the

first four ingredients in a small saucepan and gradually

whisk in 1 2/3 cup warm water and vanilla extract. Bring

syrup to a simmer over low heat, whisking often (can be

made up to 2 days in advance and re-warmed).

For the brownie, grease an 8x8 inch baking pan. Whisk the

first five ingredients together in a large bowl, blend well. Mix

in buttermilk, butter, and vanilla then add walnuts (batter will be

thick). Spread the mixture into the prepared pan and pour the

syrup mixture over the brownie. Bake until the sauce bubbles

around the sides and the brownie layer has risen almost to the

top of the pan and feels firm to the touch; about 40 minutes.

Transfer to a tack and cool for 10 minutes. Cut and serve with

whipped topping.

Fort Campbell’s Public Affairs Office (PAO)has developed a program that allowsSpouses to experience a glimpse of the various training or “a day in the life of their101st Soldier” through the Military SpouseTour Program.

This great program starts off withSpouses receiving a briefing covering the“city” of Fort Campbell. The brief covers information on Fort Campbell’s organizations, demographics, Soldier andFamily support programs, and current andfuture major construction projects and operations. From there, the Spouses get toexperience the UH-60 Blackhawk helicoptersimulator. Two groups of four people get toexperience the adrenaline rush of the flightsimulation at a time. After everyone in thegroup demonstrates their piloting abilities inthe flight simulator, they head to a nearbyDFAC or dining facility to experience militarystyle dining. After lunch, the group visitsThe Sabalauski Air Assault School (TSAAS)for a brief overview of the school’s requirements, demonstrations of the obstacle course, and different rappelling

techniques. Spouses will then have the opportunity to rappel from the school’sthirty-four foot Air Assault Tower. The laststop on the tour is at the Engagement SkillsTrainer (EST). The EST is an indoorstate-of-the-art weapons firing range that uses current U. S. Army weaponsand laser technology. Tour members will have the opportunity to fire authenticactive duty weapons at simulated targets where acomputer keeps track of hitsand misses.

The offering of suchtours is just one of the many wonderful waysFort Campbell recognizes, supports, andcarries out the Army Family Covenant. Military Spouse Tours require proper planning and coordination through a tourgroup point of contact; usually the unit’sFamily Readiness Support Assistant (FRSA).Therefore, it is imperative that certain guidelines and restrictions be metthrough a designated tour point of contact. These include, a minimum of twenty

participants all at least 18 years of age, and a tour application completed and submitted to the Fort Campbell Public Affairs Office. Tour information packets and applications can be coordinated

through Staff Sergeant GeraldBaylor and or Mr.John Minton.

Currently thetours are givenonce a monthand dates are setuntil October2010. After October the

program will be re-evaluated to determine if additional tours should be added or if theprogram will be continued. This is a valuedprogram that fulfills the needs of Fort Campbell Spouses, and interested partiesshould contact Staff Sergeant Gerald Baylorvia telephone at (270) 798-4365 or through e-mail at [email protected] to book tours. Tour dates, availability, and processes are subject to change without notice.

There have of course beenothers, but these names seem to stand out.Martha Washington followed PresidentWashington into the battlefield when heserved as Commander in Chief of the Continental Army. She spent the infamouswinter at Valley Forge with the General, and was instrumental in maintaining some level of morale among troops. Wemust never forget the true sacrifice of these women.

Military Spouses need not always

stand silently by their Soldier. ManySpouses have taken up the pen and told incredible stories of their journeys. One ofthe more famous books written by a MilitarySpouse is Married to the Military: A SurvivalGuide for Military Wives, Girlfriends, andWomen in Uniform by Meredith Leyva, founder of www.CinCHouse.com. Thebook narrates all of the helpful hints thatMilitary Spouses need to know in order tothrive. To find a copy of this book, checkout your local library. You can give the R.F. Summer is right around the corner, and that means fireworks, bar-b-ques, andtrips to the beach. It also means taking anexcursion through the back of your closet topull out that old swimsuit from seasons past.If you are like many of us, you have spentthe past several months eating comfortfoods and exercising less; or maybe that‘sjust me! As we countdown to swimsuit season, here are a few tips to help whipyour body into shape just in time for a strollon the beach.

First, visit your local physician andget a check-up. Once you get clearance, you can start yourwork-out. Next, puton your swimsuit andevaluate the areasthat need the mostwork. Lastly, create awork-out programthat involves cardiovascular training, strengthtraining, stretching, and healthy eating.

Cardiovascular training - Thekey to burning off body fat. Youcan try walking, cycling, swimming or light jogging;

do 20-40 minutes daily ofthese exercises. If you wantto switch it up, try a Zumba class. Strength training - Work yourmuscles and start on your wayto a six pack. You will need toalternate doing lower body and abdominal exercises with upper body exercises on alternate days. For each ofthese exercises, you should do three setswith 12-15 repetitions each.

Stretching - You should stretch before andafter your workout. Skipping this step maylead to muscle imbalances.Healthy eating – Try to eat at least five tosix smaller meals a day. That means eatingbreakfast, lunch, dinner, plus two snacks in between. Make sure your meals are high in protein. Protein takes more caloriesto burn; therefore it increases your metabolism.

Now you areoff to a good start.Estep Wellness Center is a greatplace to find a widevariety of exerciseclasses as well as stateof the art fitnessequipment. It is agreat resource to help

you fit into that cute little bikini! For a complete list of exercise classes go towww.fortcampbellmwr.com/Recreation/Estepor call Estep Wellness Center at (270) 798-4023/4664.

There is nothing like a refreshing dip in a cool swimming poolto quench your summer thirst for refreshment and as always, MWRstrives to providethe best possibleexperience for allFort Campbell patrons. This is amply demonstrated bythe newly updatedfacilities that provide a great experience throughoutthe aquatics program.

Patrons will notice somechanges this year in regards to deployment discounts at the pools. Thisyear, the deployment discount will notbe offered at the pools due to fundingconstraints. While funding free pool access for Families of deployed Soldiershas occurred at Fort Campbell for anumber of years, it is not an expensefunded by the Army Family Covenant(AFC). Fort Campbell MWR has an obligation to be conservative in

spending the allocated dollars for theAFC on the programs that are intendedto be provided, such as free child carefor these Families. Those programsmust take priority over recreation. While

we understand that thismay be disappointingnews, we have faith inour customers and knowthat they understand the importance of Family programs such as childcare.

One of the promisesof the Army Family

Covenant was to standardize programs and servicesacross the Army. Part of standardizingservices across installations includesfunding similar programs and unfortunately, not funding others. Theexperience for our Soldiers and Familiesshould be a consistent one at each installation. Access to the pool is stillavailable at the low price of $2 per person and children under the age of six are FREE with each paying adult. Still a great deal for summer fun! For information on the pools at FortCampbell, call (270) 798-6310.
