How many times have you gone on a date and thought youmade a connection, only to find out they were not what you are lookingfor? Perhaps you are shy and it takes nothing short of a miracle for youto approach someone. None of this means you can’t have an active social life. It is the 21st Century; make the most of it and e-date! Did you know that 1 out of 4 people participate in online dating? In the past few years e-dating has become vastly popular and is nowwidely accepted.

Whenever you go on a date, no matter how that date wasarranged, you are throwing the dice and ultimately hoping you make aconnection with someone. E-dating doesn’t change the frustrations associated with those of traditional dating, however, if done properly e-dating can increase your opportunities of meeting someone by keeping your social calendar filled.

A couple of benefits of e-dating include the ability to talk tomultiple people at one time and being able to pre-screen potential dates.Try doing that at a bar! Let’s admit it, when you have been drinkingsometimes the screening process gets distorted. Even if you are drinking while chatting up your latest interest on line, at least through

e-dating you can avoid making mistakes you will regret the next day. E-dating allows you to re-evaluate your potential partner during soberdaylight hours before taking the plunge. Leave your beer goggles at homeand reduce the coyote ugly effect by taking some simple, practical, andreal-world strategies to ensure your e-dating experience is maximized.

Step 1: Selecting an E-dating ServiceDo: Do your research. Pick a dating site that has a large number of members. Most sites will let you search without having to sign-up. Ifyour search returns several hundred “matches” then that is likely a goodstart. Some sites are free while other charge. Most will let you create aprofile and respond to people’s inquiries for free. You only have to paywhen you want to contact a person.Do: Go with the site where members disclose the kind of informationyou feel is important for selecting potential matches. There are specifice-dating services available for those who wish to be matched up withpeople who share same religious or ethnical backgrounds. In instanceswhere specific requirements are desired it is important to pay attentionto the site’s reputation and the type of people it tends to attract.

E-Dating 101:Dos and Dont’s of E-Dating in the 21st Century

by Keri McPeak

Step 2: Setting up an AccountDo: Before finalizing the set-up process reviewand adjust your security settings. There is nothingworse than having your information out there foreveryone to see or possibly misuse.Do: When you choose your screen name, try to beoriginal. This is a great opportunity to incorporateyour personality. There are plenty of names youcan use to show your sense of humor, interests, orintellect.Don’t: As obvious as it may seem, do not use youractual name as your screen name. It is also agood idea to avoid using girl, chick, man, guy orany derivatives as well as cutesy (i.e. SillyKitty orFunkyMonkey) names for your screen name.

Step 3: Writing Your ProfileDo: Your main profile picture should be a currentphoto of yourself. Although you may have beenreally fly several years ago, I guarantee you willnot be invited for a second meeting if you do notportray yourself honestly. Try to avoid putting aposed picture or professional head shot up.Do: If the site allows for multiple pictures to beposted, it’s best to include a variety of pictures of yourself. This is another great opportunity to show your interests. Pictures should be clearenough to see who is who but not necessarily professional quality.Do: Be honest when filling out the multiple choice and short answerquestions that generate your basic information and preferences such asheight, weight, religion, age, race, and gender. Do: If you are serious about getting something positive out of e-dating,put some thought into your profile and think of the profile as an advertisement for yourself. Like the screen name, the tag line is impor-tant and needs to catch the attention of those who are searching forsomeone like you.Do: Before you write your profile, check out the competition and makesure your answers are original and different from the majority.Do: Make sure you use spell check. You don’t have to answer every question seriously. If a question is stupid, say so and use it as an opportunity to show more of your personality. Include humor, originality, personality, and confidence when talking about yourself and what youare looking for in a partner.Don’t: If you have a pet or kid you definitely want to mention that in yourprofile but not necessarily include pictures ofthem on your main profile.Don’t: Include pictures of you with your ex. Don’t: It is not recommended to indicate your income.Don’t: Do not confuse the above with arrogance, clichés, or cheesiness. These arequick ways to ensure your profile is skipped.

Step 4: Make ContactDo: When contacting someone make sure tosend them a personal message that includescompliments and showcases your personality. Do: The length of the initial contact shouldnot be too short, or too long. Take the time to respond to each personwho peaks your interest.

Do: Contact multiple people at one time. Thisdoes not mean that you send a mass email out. Don’t: Get your hopes too high. The reality isthat you truly know nothing about your matchexcept what they have chosen to answer. Thegoal at this point is to identify and contact people who could be potential dates. Don’t: Just send a “wink.” More than likely youwill not get a response back. Don’t: Give your full name, phone number, or email address. Be cautious and avoid giving away personal information until you feel comfortable with the other person.

Step 5: Respond…Or Don’tDo: It’s your prerogative on whether you decideto respond. If you send out a message andthink it is only fair to receive one back, thenyou should do the same; even it is to say “no thanks.”

Step 6: The Email DialogueDo: It takes two to tango and unless you like to have a conversation with yourself take

the initiative to send an email. Be witty, original, and come up with sincere questions.Do: Set up a special email account that you use for e-dating, especiallyif your regular email has identifying information, like your name. Don’t: One liners and limited questions won’t make the cut. In the beginning you should avoid questions regarding exes, politics, personal issues, relationships, or other topics that may make people feel awkward.

Step 7: The Phone CallDo: Once you feel comfortable with whomever you are correspondingwith, set up a time when you can talk to each other on the phone. Don’t: Some people are just not ones to talk on the phone so you shouldgive them the benefit of the doubt and don’t assume they are not interested. However, if your instincts are telling you that there is something off about this person, then by all means follow your instincts.

Step 8: The MeetingDo: Keep it casual and start with coffee or lunch. If the initial meeting

goes well, make plans to go out again. Until youfeel really comfortable, plan dates that allow youto meet in public places.Do: It is also a good idea to let friends and Family know where you are going and who willbe with you. Do: Make sure you use common sense, followyour instincts, proceed with caution, and not tocreate unrealistic or unattainable expectations. Don’t: Don’t let someone you’ve never met pickyou up in a car. Don’t: If you go for drinks, be responsible andmake sure you do not drink too much and neverleave your beverage unattended.

Everyone experiences stress. This stress hasthe potential to become overwhelming and pose a riskto our friendships, professional relationships and personal health. Each of us has the ability to manageour stress. Let’s look at some ways to keep our stresslevels in check.

First, create a personal scale of 1-10, where 1 = not stressed and 10 = meltdown level of stress. Anytime you feel stressed, checkyour scale, if you are at a 5 or above, utilize one of the techniques belowto reduce your stress level.

BreatheWhen we are stressed out, ourbreathing can become shallower.Take a long, slow, deep inhalation. Next, slowly letout the air while mentally letting go of tension in yourbody. Do this three times and see how you feel.

ExerciseWhen you exercise, your body releases endorphinsand dopamine, giving a quick boost to your mood, inaddition to helping work through frustrations. Taketime to break a sweat for 20-30 minutes each day. You’ll feel better physically, and your natural mood-boosters will keep you pumped up throughout theday. Visit your nearest Physical Fitness Facility, ortake a run on the new track at Fryar Stadium.

Reframe the SituationWe have choices in how we perceive the things thathappen in our lives. If every little thing is throwingyou off of your game, take a look around and see ifthose mountains are really molehills. Life is full ofchanges and challenges; how well you adapt tochange, and how you take on each challenge may beas simple as changing your mindset. Programs likeArmy Family Team Building offer classes on adaptingto change and managing stress. Call (270) 798-4800for more information on upcoming classes.

Take a WalkStep away for five minutes and take a lap around theblock, or the building. Getting a quick change ofscenery and fresh air can turn your mood around. With deep breathing and increased blood flow, taking a walk is like hitting a reset button for how youapproach a problem.

LaughWhether reading a good joke, watching a funnyvideo, or sitting down at a comedy club, laughter isa great stress-reliever at the end of a long day. Checkout an over-the-top comedy on DVD at R.F. Sink Li-brary or visit D.W. Recreation Center where you havea choice of a variety of movies for free, which youcan view on one of their many large screen televi-sions. Call (270) 798-7446 for more informationabout D.W. Recreation Center.

Take Time for YouGive yourself permission to takesome time for you. Schedule a mas-sage or spa treatment and just letyourself relax. Massage releases en-dorphins in your body, increases cir-culation and is very relaxing.Different types of massages can helpwith different types of stress. If youhold a lot of tension in your muscles,

for example, then you may prefer a hot stone massageor deep tissue bodywork. If you’re new to massage, theflowing, rhythmic strokes of a Swedish massage serveas a great introduction.

Talk It OutSometimes, all you need is to vent to someone who willsimply listen. Chat with a trusted friend, visit a chap-lain, or meet up with a Military Family Life Consultant(MFLC). MFLCs are everywhere, and you can air frus-trations confidentially, with no records. MFLCs can bereached at (270) 205-1917, or by visiting the FamilyResource Center on William C. Lee Road. Chaplains areavailable at (270) 798-3316.

After you’ve tried a stress-management technique, evaluate whether it’s working for you. Ifyou’re still finding you are stressed, find ways to tackleproblems that are causing your stress by visiting ArmyCommunity Service.

“Lots of different things can cause stress; relationships and finances top the list for most people,” says Art Jones, Director of Army CommunityService. “At Fort Campbell, we have at least 17 agencies here that can help with stressful issues. ArmyCommunity Service is a conduit to help you find thebest agency to meet your needs. GAMING SYSTEMS ARE HIGHLY ENTERTAINING, FUN FORall ages and let’s be honest, who doesn’t like playing video games! Butout of all the gaming systems available, which one should you choose? The two most popular gaming systems in the market right now are Sony’sPlaystation 3 (PS3) and Microsoft’s Xbox 360. It's hard to decide between these two because they are both great gaming systems. Personally, I'm a PS3 man it's just what I grew up using. I'm not putting down the Xbox though; it can definitely hold its own in a fight.Let's go through a few aspects ofeach system, of course startingwith my favorite, the PS3. It justdoes everything!

Due to Sony’s successwith its Playstation 2 gaming console, Sony created the PS3,which continues to be the best-selling console on the market today. When Sony createdthe PS3 they vastly improved thehardware and concentrated on expanding online play and multimedia, securing the futureof the PS3.

Sony has always incor-porated its video game consoleswith multimedia capabilities andthe PS3 is no exception. The PS3offers audio CD, DVD and Blu-Ray compatibility with additional Wi-Fi, online and web browsing abilities. With its onlineand web browsing capabilities, the PS3 can compliment any office or workspace and serve as the center for all your entertainment needs. ThePlaystation store offers hundredsof downloads and free demos likeAngry Birds (who doesn't likeAngry Birds). Some of the of thebest games I have tried includeRed Dead Redemption, HeavyRain, UFC 2010, Uncharted 2, and Call of Duty Black Ops, just to namea few. I could keep going but I would probably name them all. Last butnot least you can't forget about the Playstation Move. PlayStation Moveis an upcoming motion-sensing game controller platform for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) video game console. It’s so simple to use, just pickup the controller and play, that’s it. The combination of technology fromthe remote to the camera allows you to see yourself holding or interactwith a character right in your living room. I love it and I know you willlove it too.

Now, let’s talk about the Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 has madeseveral improvements over its predecessors. The console still provides anextensive library and clear, vibrant graphics, but it now includes built-in Wi-Fi. Older models had challenges with overheating however, the redesigned Xbox includes a larger fan and improved ventsystem. Microsoft tried to include HD capability and failed in theprocess. Blue-Ray players hold more information and are cheaper tomake. Sorry Xbox Fans! The processor is a little slower than the PS3

and its not 3D compatible. But onegreat thing about the Xbox 360 isthe Kinects. No controller neededjust you and the game. Imagine controlling a movie or game with awave of a hand or the sound of yourvoice. Exciting isn't it. Some gamesfor the Kinects are Active 2 workoutprogram, Zumba for the ladies, animals for the kids and sports forthe guys. One game for the Xbox 360that PS3 just can’t compete with isthe Halo compilation. Halo 3 is theXbox 360’s bestselling game and hassold an estimated 8.1 millioncopies. The game is pretty amazing;you just have to see to believe it!

Bottom line, PS3 and Xbox 360are two great systems; it just all depends on what features you want, what you grew up on and of coursehow much you want to spend. Thesegaming systems tend to be a littlepricey so consider shopping at the main PX Mall to take advantageof their military prices. I say try them both and decide from there. Either way my friends you won't be disappointed. Before you go out and spend your

hard earned money stop by DaleWayrynen Recreation Center, locatedat 6145 Desert Storm Avenue, andtry out their PS3 and XBox 360. For

more information about Dale Wayrynen Recreation Center and the gamesthey have available call (270) 798-7446.
