TAKE THE CHALLENGE

at Outdoor Recreation Challenge Course

Summer is here and it’s time to head outdoors! It’s also a greattime to challenge the mind and body and have some funat the Outdoor Recreation Challenge Course. A challenge course is a series of activities to include climbing, traversing pulleys and cablesand a ropes course that challenges the body andhelps foster personal development and team building. The Challenge course consists of highand/or low level elements. Low elements take placeon the ground or only a few feet above the groundwhile high elements are built on utility poles, trees, orin the rafters of a building.

Fort Campbell’s Challenge Course currentlyhosts an Alpine Tower, the Carolina T-Wall and anOdyssey course. The Carolina T-Wall sits just shy of 50feet and has 8 different faces simulating a realistic styleof rock climbing. The Alpine Tower, shaped like an hourglass and standing at 50 feet tall, is a vertical obstaclecourse, where groups will work as a team or individuallyto ascend the many cargo nets, ropes, poles, and hangingladders. Attached to the Alpine Tower is the Giants Swing.Using pulleys and cables, groups will lift individuals to aheight of 30 feet before being released to a controlledfall/swing. Next, is the low ropes course consisting of many

unique challenges, most notably theTeam Development

Course. Lastly, weoffer the largeststructure called theOdyssey. This struc-ture is the ideal adultjungle gym. Withcargo nets, zip lines, sliding platforms, andcables suspended inmid air, individualshave the opportunity towork by themselves or as teams to traversefrom one side to the other.

The ChallengeCourse is an excellentgroup activity. You couldbring your unit for a team building day to workon group cohesion and alternative forms of com-munication or just to havesome fun. There is no

better way to build cohesion than to complete a course that involves reliance on team members and confidence in personal strengths. ODRcan build just about any program to fit your needs as a group. We arevery flexible and want to hear your ideas. You could also gather a groupof friends together to climb on our structures for a great workout forphysical training purposes.

Before you make any reservations feel free to call us to take atour of the course. This is a great opportunity to ask us questions andget acquainted with what our program has to offer.

In the coming months you can look forward to some new low elements being built on the course. We will be building a wall, islands, and a whale watch. These low elements are a unique way to challenge a group both physically and mentally. For example the whalewatch is a large seesaw like structure on which a group of people must work together to balance.Such elements encourage a groupto focus on communicating andworking together.Participants willcome away with a heightened sense of self worth, confidence, and groupcohesion all while getting great exercise.

Upon request, staffcan further challengethe group by blindfold-ing participants or notallowing them to speakwhich prompts the groupto think creatively anduse alternate methods tosolve the problems.

For more informationabout the ChallengeCourse or to plan yourgroup’s event call (270) 412-7855.

We look forward to meetingyou!

Growing up a country girl, there were many adventures to behad! The forest, directly behind oursummer home, was 40 acres of uninhabited territory! At least that’swhat I told myself as I ventured outinto the great wilderness! The rapidriver that quickly flowed through thisjungle seemed so vast and inviting. I wondered where it led as I traveled along its winding banks. Ofcourse I was a child, and everythingseemed so big! The actual size of therapid river, well honestly, it was a bab-bling little brook that was no morethan 6 inches wide, but I knew it ledto somewhere huge and wild. Oh howI longed to walk beside that littlebrook until I found the ocean. As anadult my yearning for adventure is stilljust a vacation away, and managingLeisure Travel Services helps in finding the next great adventure. Tennessee and surrounding states offerso many different quests; it can be hard to choose. When I received information regarding the Ocoee Adventure Company, I was instantlytaken back to those days as a little girl imagining where that rapid rivercould take me!

What is Ocoee Adventure Company? It’s the destination for yournext adventure filled with excitement and the thrill of whitewater rafting and everything that the great outdoors has to offer! What betterway to spend time with your friends than in the wilderness, battling nature and risking it all on great rapids such as those named Humongous, Godzilla, Table Saw and Hell’s Hole! Don’t settle for thesame old amusement park thrill ride that lasts all of 60 seconds, I dareyou to try something new. An Ocoee Adventure will leave you with feelings of strength and power. And you will have deemed yourself “King

or Queen of the Rapids” for having conquered the miles and miles oftreacherous natural water coasters.

If that is just too exciting for you, simply choose another riverthat is a bit milder. How about a scenic relaxing float trip with some exciting whitewater thrown in? Or perhaps you would prefer to meet inthe middle by partaking in an adventure with cascading waterfalls?Adventure sites may offer a biking trails and/or hiking and overnightcamping trips. How wonderful it would be to spend time in the painted scenery of America’s canvas designed by Mother Nature whereyou can view rarely seen waterfalls and breathtaking mountain vistasthat are simply awe-inspiring.

Ocoee Adventure Company LLC has several locations fromwhich to choose to include Southern Expeditions on the ChattanoogaRiver near Clayton, Georgia, Big Frog Expeditions on the Ocoee River inBenton, Tennessee or Ocoee Adventure Center on the Ocoee River inCopperhill, Tennessee. Each location offers something different so it isup to you to decide which river or landscape you would like to discover.Enhance your adventure by adding a mountain bike adventures, Flatwater Kayak Lake Tours or camping to your trip. Fort Campbell Outdoor Recreation offers several great fishingspots to include two lakes, two stocked trout streams and numerousbeaver ponds. Before you venture out to reel in the catch of the day, make sure you have all the requirement documents completed beforeyou bait your hook. You must have a valid fishing license from eitherKentucky or Tennessee and a valid post permit to fish. To purchase your permit and license, head on over to Outdoor Recreation’s main buildinglocated at 6645 101st Airborne Division Avenue. You can find the feerequirements by calling (270) 798-2175 or by visiting www.fortcampbellmwr.com/Recreation/fishing. Once you have all yourpermits, you will need to get your area assignment. Outdoor Recreationcan take care of this for you, but be sure to get two copies. One copystays in your vehicle and the second should be kept with you while youfish. Don’t risk a big fine over a little piece of paper.

What’s biting? Crappie, catfish, trout, bass and bluegill are allcommon fish in this region. You can catch and release or keep a few. There are no minimum length requirements for trout (brown or rainbow),bream or catfish. Black bass and crappie have a 10 inch minimum if youwant to fry them up. Make sure you don’t exceed the daily limit, nomatter how good the fish are biting! May is a great time of year forbream and you can keep up to 25. Last year, a group I was with caughtour limit within a few hours, and none were smaller than eight inches.I am not sure if it was the bait we used (live crickets) or the fact that wewere all quiet and calm in a popular area for the fish to hang out, butwe could have netted our limit easily. I learned quickly not to cast toofar out, and to be patient while reeling in my catch. My first castswere…well, let’s just say I hooked a big one, and my friend has the scarto prove it.

If you don’t care for bream, you can hook catfish, bass or even a few trout. Daily limits for crappie and catfish are 10 perperson, five for black bass and rainbow trout and two for brown trout.Don’t think you have to make an immediate decision if you want to keepthe fish or release it back into the water. Have a cooler or a stringerhandy to hold onto your catch. Your possession limit is simply doubleyour daily limit. I wouldn’t want to try to fillet a teeny tiny fish, so holdonto them until you have the largest you want to keep, and then releasethe rest. A word of caution with stringers, turtles are common here.Check the string often, turtles are opportunistic feeders and can quicklyturn your daily limit into an empty net. Nothing worse than looking forward to a fish fry only to end up with an empty growling stomach!

If you haven’t checked out the fishing areas here, try a cast or two. For more information about fishing opportunities or license requirements contact Outdoor Recreation at (270) 798-2175 or [email protected].
