5 Maintenance Tips for Your Car This Summer
During the summer, many people head out
on the open roads to travel from one town
to another. Even when gas prices soar,
people can’t resist hitting the open road and
watching the sunset in the distance. Before
you hit the road this summer, you want to
take a few precautions to make sure your
loved ones are safe on your adventure.
Check Your Tires
Tires tend to be one of those components
that are often overlooked in vehicles. Only
one individual in every 10 actually checks the pressure in their tires
correctly. However, seven in every 10 people do wash their car on a regular
basis. This tells you the importance of checking tires for vehicle owners.
Tires that aren’t inflated properly can pose a serious danger during the
warm, summer months.
Change the Filter and Oil
Oil is the lifeline of your vehicle. It keeps all of the parts in the engine
running smooth, clean and cool. Most mechanics will tell you to change your
oil every three months or 3,000 miles. Since many individuals do a
significant amount of driving in the summer months, there is a greater
chance that the engine will overheat.
Check the Belts and Hoses
The main thing you need to worry about in the summer is keeping your
engine at the right operating temperature. Check all of the belts and hoses
for any leaks, cracks or loose connections. The hoses should be firm, not
soft. Hoses will often go through a slow degradation process that continually
eats through the rubber hoses from inside of them.

Get Your Air Filter Changed
During the cool, winter months, the air filter in the car will get clogged with
a variety of debris and salt. Clogged filters will cause your gas mileage to
suffer. Replacing your filter can help to improve your gas mileage by 10
percent. Depending on how much and where you drive, you should change
your air filter at least every 12,000 miles. When driving on dirt and gravel,
the filter will get clogged far quicker than paved roads.
Replace Your Windshield Wipers
Along with summer comes a whole host of thunderstorms. Water will come
beating down on your windows and leave you unable to see. Thanks to
wipers, you can see the road during some of the worst storms. Winter
causes your wipers to take a beating, so you want to have them replaced
before the summer storms take over.
Take the time to speak with a licensed professional about what your car
needs to ensure your vacation is safe and enjoyable. By spending a few
minutes with a mechanic, you can save a lot of time and hassles along the
way.
