The bombers dropped 985 tons of High Explosive and Incendiary Bombs on Kiel, 192 tons on Munster and 84 tons on the targets of opportunity. Bombing was done through heavy cloud cover and results were mostly unobserved. However, Pathfinder equipment was functioning well and PFF crews believe that Kiel and Munster were hard hit. The bombers had little enemy aircraft opposition and anti-aircraft fire was reported as moderate. Fighter escort was provided by P-38s, P-47s and P-51s of both Eighth and Ninth Air Forces. Eighteen bombers were lost. The 1st Bombardment Division put up 257 B-17 aircraft, with 193 hitting Kiel and seven hitting other targets. Six B-17 aircraft were lost, with three crewmen killed, five wounded and 52 crewmen reported as missing in action (MIA). The 2nd Bombardment Division put up 130 B-24 aircraft, with 81 hitting Kiel and 34 hitting other targets. Six B-24 aircraft were lost, with seven crewmen killed, nine wounded, and 59 crewmen reported as missing in action (MIA). The 3rd Bombardment Division hit both Kiel and Munster, with 172 B-17s being dispatched to hit Kiel. Four aircraft were lost, with one crewman killed, three wounded, and thirty crewmen reported as missing in action (MIA). Along with the aircraft of the three Bombardment Divisions were ten Pathfinder aircraft that led the massive attack on Germany. The other part of the 3rd Bombardment Division's forces were directed at Munster, Germany. Seventy-three B-17s plus two PFF aircraft were dispatched, with two aircraft being lost. One crewman was wounded and twenty crewmen were reported as missing in action (MIA). These two aircraft were lost due to a mid-air collision. Eighteen of the missing crewmen were later reported as being rescued. Approximately thirty enemy fighters were encountered and they consisted mostly of ME-109s and FW-190s, with a few JU-88s, ME-110s and ME-210s. Crews reported that the fighter escort was effective.

Mission 095 - 2

Sixteen bombers were lost, one to anti-aircraft fire, five to anti-aircraft fire andenemy aircraft, and ten to unknown reasons. Estimated battle damage to our aircraft washeavy with 154 being in category A damage, eleven in category B damage, and three incategory E damage.

Thirty-eight ships were dispatched with the Group flying in two groups of aircraft inthe 41st CW-B formation. One B-17 failed to take off: #42-29823, (No Name) 427BS-X(McGarry), had low hydraulic pressure, pulled off the ramp and got stuck in the mud. Twoothers aborted after take-off: #42-3131, Flak Wolf 427BS-U (Barnes) - had a run-awayprop. #42-42-5054, Belle of San Joaquin 360BS-I (Holdcroft) - the No. 4 engine failednear the Frisian Islands. 1Lt. McClellan, flying as second element leader of high 427BS,was unable to find the Group formation. The four aircraft of his element returned toMolesworth.

The lead Group arrived over the target and found 7/10 cloud cover. They locateda cloud break and bombed visually when the PFF equipment failed, releasing 138 M-43500-lb. G.P. bombs. The bombing results were poor, photos revealed hits in the water. The lead Group made sharp turns to set up their bomb run and the low 303rd BG(H)formation of 14 B-17s could not keep up with the Wing formation. They jettisoned their 126M47A1 65-lb. incendiary bombs.

Flak at the target was moderate, but very accurate and of heavy caliber. Twenty-one Group aircraft sustained flak damage. Ten to fifteen enemy fighters were seen andthree aircraft sustained fighter battle damage. Gunners listed two enemy aircraft asdestroyed and three as probable. One complete crew was missing in action. Returningaircraft contained seven casualties–two minor flak wounds and five frostbite cases.Twenty-four aircraft sustained damage, twenty-two by flak and two by enemy fighters.

One brand-new aircraft was missing. #42-31526 Sweet Anna, piloted by 1Lt. FredC. Humphreys, was heard giving a distress signal after it was hit by enemy fighters andleft the formation. The B-17 was on its first combat mission. The aircraft ditched in theNorth Sea with the loss of all crewmen. Crewmen on board were: Lt. Humphreys, 2Lt.James H. Clemons, 2Lt. Harry Hladun, 2Lt. Burnie N. Mire, T/Sgt. Ferdinand J. Janisch,T/Sgt. Arthur H. Woods, S/Sgt. Madison H. Ross, S/Sgt. Melvin M. Dare, S/Sgt. EdwardP. Madak and S/Sgt. William C. Sparks. On 4 Oct 1944, the body of S/Sgt. Madak wasrecovered on Ameland Island, Holland.

Colonel Kermit D. Stevens reported, "There was quite a bit of flak around the targetarea, but not much fighter opposition that I could see. We had lots of P-38s and P-51s forfighter cover. We flew a pretty good formation and should have dropped our bombs in agood pattern. We saw a lot of heavy black smoke coming up through the clouds as we left."

1Lt. Robert J. Hullar, who piloted Col. Stevens in the Vicious Virgin said, "We hadgood navigation and I think that we hit the target. Our bombardier aimed at some tallchimneys sticking up through the smoke." Bombardier Lt. Robert DeFeis, believed thatthe bombing was good. "We had a good run that wasn't interrupted at all. Our ball turretgunner, S/Sgt. Sampson, said he saw our bombs hit right in the middle of town."

B-17F #41-24561 The Duchess - (crewmen unknown)

Sgt. Calvin Turkington, flying as tail gunner on the Fortress Wallaroo, claimed anenemy fighter. He said, "The JU-88 came diving in on our tail out of the heavy contrailsleft by the formation. I let him have a burst from my tail guns and he fell to pieces." Sgt.Turkington was killed on the mission of 28 September 1944. "The fighter support we hadby P-38s and P-51s couldn't be beat," said S/Sgt. Anthony Laurinitis, the waist gunner."A German ME-210 came in on our formation, firing its rocket guns, when three P-51s dovedown on it and chased him into the clouds below."

The "Ragged Irregulars" was the first 8th Air Force Bomber Group to complete 100missions. They also incurred a heavier loss in aircraft and crewmen than any other BombGroup.

The Fortress Knockout Dropper completed its 60th mission while The Duchess (areplacement ship) reached the fifty mark.
