Sightseeing tour of Ålesund
Cable car ascent
Lunch
Mount Aksla: panoramic viewpoint
The programme
Our excursion starts with a brief sightseeing tour of Ålesund, famous for its Liberty-style architecture
and delightful position, nestled between aquatic arabesques and soaring mountain peaks.
Then we will head towards the town of Stranda. To get there *we will cross the fjord on a ferry that
will sail along the region's spectacular narrow waterways that run between steep slopes where
nature is in total control.
When we arrive, we will take the charming cable car to the top of the mountain behind Stranda,
reaching approximately 1,042 metres above sea level.
The view will leave you speechless: green fields, goats grazing and snow that is even still there in
summer - perfect for the kids who can have fun playing. From the viewpoint at the top of the
mountain, we can admire the majestic Geiranger Fjord, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and
Jostedal glacier, the largest in Europe situated on dry land.
We will have a bit of free time to relax and enjoy the atmosphere up on the mountain taking in the
stunning panoramic views.
For the return back to Ålesund we will cross the fjord again, taking a different route from before and
take a ferry. We will experience the incredible sensation of sailing in this narrow stretch of sea that
will treat us to countless stunning views.
On our return journey, before rejoining the ship, we will make a quick stop at Mount Aksla, one of
Ålesund's biggest attractions, to take some photos of the views. It boasts incredible views of the
town, the charming surrounding islands and the majestic Sunnmøre Alps.
Stranda Gondola might close for safety reasons in case of high winds or adverse weather
conditions. In this case we will do our best to provide an alternative program. INFORMATIONS

In a nutshellAn unmissable excursion, a balance of history and nature: to the islands of Giske and Godøy, to exploreViking history and culture, where we will be seduced by the magical views, to then discover theunderwater marvels of the Ålesund aquarium. After a last look, we will enjoy breathtaking views from thetop of Mount Aksla.
Main stops
Island of Giske: Giske church (guided tour of inside)
Island of Godøy: lighthouse in the village of Alnes
Ålesund aquarium
Mount Aksla: panoramic viewpoint
The programme
We start our excursion on the island of Giske, one of the many islands that make up the archipelago
of the same name, where the inhabitants (around 6,300) rely on ferry links to Ålesund and the
mainland. The islands can be reached over bridges and through underground tunnels, the longest
of which is 4.2 km long.
The legendary island of Giske is also known as the 'saga island' because the Viking chieftain, Rollo,
an ancestor of William the Conqueror, was born here and later settled on the northern coast of
France known today as Normandy. Settlements on the flat and fertile island of Giske date back to
the beginning of the Bronze Age.
Next we will visit Giske church, built in 1150; the inner and outer walls are covered with white marble.
It was originally a family chapel belonging to the powerful Giske clan. The church boasts a multi-
coloured altarpiece and a finely carved pulpit.
Then we will travel to the second island on our tour, the island of Godøy, with its unique structure,
almost divided into two by a mountain range.
Here, we will visit the lighthouse from 1876 located in the small fishing village of Alnes overlooking
the Atlantic Ocean. To truly appreciate the sense of isolation here, visitors who wish to do so can
climb the stairs up the five floors of the wooden structure which lead to the top of the lighthouse, up
to the circular balcony. Every floor features paintings created by the famous Norwegian artist,
Ørnulf Opdahl.
Before returning on-board, we will visit the Ålesund Aquarium, one of the most characteristic in
Europe. Large salted water pools are lined up along the coast, providing us with the opportunity to

to the ''Mount Aksla viewpoint**. We will stop here to admire the spectacular view of the city, the
magical surrounding islands and the majestic Sunnmøre Alps before returning to the port.

The programme
Lets discover Ålesund, the largest town on the north-west coast of Norway, built on three islands
extending into the ocean which stand out against the splendid backdrop of impressive mountain
peaks..
A large part of the town was destroyed by the fire of 1904. It was rebuilt in the typical Art Nouveau
style of the first decade of the twentieth century .
It was the German Emperor William II, a great friend of the Norwegian kings, who used to spend his
holidays in district of Sunnmøre, to actually send four ships laden with help for the town. The central
nucleus was rebuilt in bricks and stone to restrict any further fires.

Today, Ålesund has a population of about 40,000, although the town centre is relatively small and is
easy to visit on foot.
Our tour begins with a visit to the Art Nouveau Centre, a museum in one of the most beautifully
decorated buildings in this style: it used to be a pharmacy and inside it still houses the vintage
containers of herbs and medicines on its shelves.
The three-storey museum provides an interesting overview of the history of Ålesund, of the fire in
1904 and of the creative period in the Art Nouveau style.
During our journey, we will be told of the importance of the fishmongers in Norways largest port for
the export of fish. Well have the opportunity of seeing various examples of the Art Nouveau style of
the towns architecture, which has made Ålesund famous as one of the last three Art Nouveau
towns in Europe.,
Our excursion continues to climb up to the small park at the foot of Mount Aksla.
Well see numerous exotic plants in the park as well as a commemorative stone dedicated to the
emperor William II for the help he gave to rebuild the town after the fire of 1904. Here stands the
statue of the Viking warrior Gange-Rolv, who sailed from Ålesund to todays Normandy, the name of
which comes from the Norwegian conquerors.
We can walk round the park and take a break before returning to the quayside and to our ship.
Guests must be able to walk for approximately 3 km on steep, asphalted and cobbled terrain.
Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. INFORMATIONS

Mount Aksla
The programme
We depart with our guide and head for Ålesund, the most famous fishing port in Norway for deep-
sea fishing and herring and cod processing.
The city was founded in 1793 and extends from west to east over three small islands facing the
Norwegian Sea. After a fire destroyed the old wooden houses and left over 10,000 people homeless,
it was entirely rebuilt in 1904 in Art Nouveau style by Norwegian architects inspired by the European
style.
Following the itinerary along the Borgundfjord, we go past modern districts and the old commercial
centre.
Then we will really venture into the past with a visit to the Sunnmøre Museum, an open-air museum
located in a fascinating setting, home to 30 original ancient houses from different parts of the
country. The museum reproduces traditional local scenes, and houses a craft collection, allowing
us to retrace the history, traditions and customs of this seafaring culture. For nautical enthusiasts,
there is also a collection of around 40 ancient boats, including reconstructions of Viking ships and a
merchant vessel dating back to approximately 1000 AD.
On our return journey, we make a quick stop at Mount Aksla to take some photos of the views. Along
with the Fjellstua and Kniven viewpoints, Mount Aksla is one of Ålesund's biggest attractions. It
boasts incredible views of the town, the charming surrounding islands and the majestic Sunnmøre

In a nutshellA real safari through Ålesund on a rigid inflatable boat, to admire the breathtaking scenery and discoverthe countless species of birds and animals that inhabit these spectacular places.
Main stops
Coast of Ålesund
Runde Island
Local fauna: birds, seals
The programme
After donning our life jackets and listening to some safety information, we will leave the port on a
rigid inflatable boat (RIB) to fully enjoy the waters off the coast of Ålesund.
If the weather is good and it is not very windy, we can visit Runde Island, famous for the huge
number of birds there. Situated 67 km south-west of Ålesund and connected to the mainland via a
bridge, the island is home to over half a million seabirds of 230 different species, including 100,000
puffins and 50,000 pairs of kittiwakes, as well as colonies of gannets, petrels, razorbills and
guillemots which nest there.
In the event of less favourable conditions, we will stay in the sheltered waters of Ålesund. There are
also many birds here and, with a bit of luck, we may even get to catch a glimpse of an eagle ray.
Our guide will help us to spot some interesting examples of the local fauna and will take us near a
rock where we can watch the seals basking in the sun. INFORMATIONS

In a nutshellGet on and off the bus whenever you like and choose for yourself how long to spend at Ålesund's mosticonic sites: from the Art Nouveau Centre, which is imbued with the atmosphere of the old city, to the Town Park populated by ancient heroes, to Mount Aksla, perfect for viewing this picture-postcard jewelfrom above. We know, choosing isn't easy...but everything else is!
Main stops
Art Nouveau Centre
Ålesund Town Park/shopping area
Aksla (Fjellstua) viewpoint
The programme
Everything you need to see in Ålesund in a single itinerary: you are the one who chooses what to
visit in this town, which has been entirely rebuilt in Art Nouveau style.
What would you say to a dive into the city's architectural and artistic past? Simply stop off at the old
Art Nouveau-style pharmacy, dating back to 1905, which is now home to the Art Nouveau Centre.
The Town Park is the perfect place for catching a glimpse of a piece of history from the city of
Rouen, France: the statue of the viking Rollo, the first count of Normandy from 911 A.D.
Meanwhile, the Parken Culture House is a dive into the lifestyle of the city: minimalist architecture
from the outside, concerts, shows and boutiques inside.
A suggestion: don't miss out on the Fjellstua panoramic terrace, on Mount Aksla, for a picture-
postcard view over the town.
Pastel facades, spires, turrets, dragons' heads, floral decorations and the Sunnmøre Alps framing it
all. The best of Ålesund on a single coach ride. Let's go! INFORMATIONS

North Cape
Nordkapphallen (North Cape Hall): chapel, bar, restaurant, spectacular ocean view
Film exploring the history of North Cape, and four seasons in the life of this mysterious place
The programme
Our excursion will take us to North Cape, the most northern point of Europe and a place that, for
hundreds of years, has attracted generations of explorers from all over the world. It represents the
final frontier with the Arctic Ocean and is one of the best places in Northern Norway to observe the
Aurora Borealis.
Here we find the Nordkapphallen, a tourist visitor centre which offers plenty of space in which to
enjoy the spectacular landscape. We can relax, take a coffee break, do a little shopping and visit
the planet's most northerly chapel. On the top floor of the building is a restaurant that offers an
incredible view of the uplands and the infinite ocean.
We are enchanted by a film that tells us of the history of generations of inhabitants and takes us on
a journey through four seasons in this landscape of contrasts, spectacular lights and breathtaking
scenery, all set to an engaging soundtrack. The film is projected on the world's first 180° screen
The site is located 307 metres above sea level and there are always gusty winds. We therefore
recommend that you wear a jacket.
The exclusion includes coach transfer to North Cape.
This excursion does not include the services of a guide.
Places on this excursion are limited. We recommend booking early. INFORMATIONS

Main stops
Honningsvåg
Fish processing factories and Skipsfjord
Upland of Skipsfjord, with a variety of plants and grazing reindeer
Gjesvær and Stappan islands
Bird safari
The programme
Our departure point for this trip is Honningsvåg, the capital of the island of Magerøy. The town
counts approximately 3,200 inhabitants and is often visited by cruise ships as well as commercial
ships from Russia.
We leave Honningsvåg by coach to visit the fish processing factories, the hotels and air-landing
strip before skirting the Skipsfjord with its bungalows for weekend tourists.
We will then climb to the upland. Trees do not grow on the island but here, surprisingly, we find
numerous plant species. In the summer months, this is the grazing ground for approximately 5,000
reindeer and, with a bit of luck, we will be able to see some of them. They are tame animals owned
by the Sami population, an ethnic minority concentrated particularly in the Finnmark county. 10% of
this community still leads a nomadic life, following the reindeer to the coast in the spring before
returning inland in the autumn.
The next stop will be Gjesvær, a village located 37 km west of Honningsvåg with a sheltered port
and roughly one hundred islands of various sizes just off the coast: among these are the Stappan
islands, nature and bird reserves. We will board a boat and head out towards the islands, but we
must keep a certain distance for the protection of the local fauna.
It is called Bird Safari: in the archipelago, located 15 km west of North Cape, we will discover the
nests of a wide variety of marine birds: kittiwakes, sea puffins, razorbills, common guillemots,
cormorants, European shags and boobies. There is a good a chance that we will be able to spot a
sea eagle.
After approximately two hours we will head back to Gjesvær, from where we will take the coach
back to Honningsvåg.
Places on this excursion are limited. We recommend booking early.
This excursion is not recommended for guests with mobility problems or those who suffer from sea
sickness. INFORMATIONS

King crabs
Tasting of king crabs prepared according to local tradition
The programme
Today we will discover a typical and special delicacy of this area: the giant king crab. It was
introduced into the Barents Sea by Russian scientists in the 1960s. In these waters the crustacean
proliferated, moving rapidly west, so much so that today it has even colonised the north coast of
Norway. As there are millions of these crabs, it is feared that their impact on the ecosystem could
be disastrous and so controlled fishing is permitted.
We reach Sarnes where we find the king crabs that are kept in pools or special cages before being
picked to be cooked and served inside a lavvo, the traditional Lapp tent, where they are
accompanied by bread, butter and coffee heated on the fire.
We taste the crab and discover its delicious meat, which is similar to lobster; unsurprisingly, it is sold
on the market at a high price.
We will also learn other things about this animal: it can live for 30 years, measure up to 2 metres
claw to claw and weigh 10 kilos. However the majority of those caught weigh less, between 3 and 7
kilos. The wonderful meat of the legs and claws is particularly succulent and has a sweet flavour.
One leg is enough to satisfy an adult appetite. Just one claw is enough to satisfy an adult appetite!
After this succulent lunch we take the coach back to the ship. INFORMATIONS

Honningsvåg
Kjelvik fishing village and Helnes lighthouse
Arctic Ice Bar
The programme
Join us for an exhilarating RIB ride at the northern-most parts of the world. Your RIB escort will meet
you on the pier and walk with you to the RIB station. You will first put on thermal suits and be given a
safety briefing. The ride passes the fishing village of Kjelvik and the Helnes Lighthouse built in 1908.
The lighthouse situated east of the North Cape is one the most northern in Norway. The RIB escort
will slow down a little so you can learn about life in the fishing villages and the Helnes Lighthouse
before returning to Honningsvåg.
Back in Honningsvåg, you will leave the RIB and head straight for the Artico Ice Bar. Here is a bar
made entirely of ice from the local area. Sample two non-alcoholic whilst you sit on ice covered by
reindeer skins. A short walk across the street allows you to change back to your own clothes. The
walk back to the ship is not accompanied and you could return to the Artico Ice Bar or indulge in a

Art Gallery 'East of the Sun' of the artists Eva Schmutterer
Village of Skarsvåg and North Cape Horn
North Cape Christmas and Winter House
The programme
Our coach tour begins with a trip through the town of Honningsvåg which contests the title of the
northernmost town in the world with Hammerfest and then continues along the Skips Fjord, a
splendid fjord sprinkled with colourful cottages, hotels and camp sites
We continue to Kamøyvær, the tiniest fishing village on the island of Magerøya with barely 100
residents.
The village lies in a sheltered position and consists of bungalows and cottages painted in pastel
shades. It boasts a fish processing factory, a small fleet of fishing boats, a lighthouse and a tiny,
picturesque harbour.
Before we continue our tour, well have a brief photographic stop.
Well also stop for a cultural visit to the Gallery East of the Sun which exhibits works of art and craft,
and brightly painted canvases by the artists Eva Schmutterer, who loves to guide people personally
around her exhibition and workshop.
Among the works on show are some exotic pictures made with fish bones, jewels made of stone
and glass and tiny models of reindeer all handmade.
Back on the main road, we continue northwards towards Skarsvåg-krysset, only to leave it once
again to reach the tiny fishing village of Skarsvåg, about 14 km from North Cape.
Well stop at the panoramic viewpoint from where we can see North Cape Horn, a rocky formation
once used as a place of worship for Sami sacrifices.
Well stop in Skarsvåg, to visit the North Cape Christmas and Winter House. We can immerse
ourselves in the typical winter, Christmas atmosphere of northern Norway as the house is
decorated with Christmas decorations. And thats not all: youll be able to buy glasses, ceramics,
postcards, photos and knitwear.

excursion to discover an enchanting place on the Arctic Circle famous for both the Northern Lights
and the Midnight Sun.
We set off from Buksnesfjord, filled with unexpected gems just like a treasure chest, and head to
Mortsund, an idyllic fishing village where we have the chance to observe the activities of one of the
main fish processing facilities at first hand.
We continue internally along the coast to another fishing village, Ure, surrounded by enchanting
scenery where it is easy to spot majestic specimens of golden eagle that come to these peaceful
locations to nest just like other bird colonies. There is such a tremendous variety of wild animals on
this archipelago that visitors have been fascinated by it for centuries.
We then head to Ballstad, one of the main fishing stations on the Lofoten islands which also
features a cod liver oil production facility as well as other fish processing centres. But Ballstad does
not only mean fishing: many tourists choose this destination in summer to relax while fishing,
trekking or on boat trips, maybe staying in one of the typical rorbuers, the typical red houses where
fishermen used to live. In addition to its restaurants and cafés, Ballstad also boasts an art gallery
and the largest mural in Northern Europe which was painted on the wall of a shipyard by American
artist Scott Thoe, who has been living on the archipelago for many years.
We finish our excursion along the evocative black cliffs which drop into the turquoise waters along
this stretch of the Norwegian Sea.

The programme
Our tour begins in Leknes on the island of Vestvågøy, the largest in the Lofoten archipelago. This
rapidly-growing town stands out from the others nearby due to its economy and urban layout -
agriculture is in fact just as important as fishing and the centre is not directly overlooking the sea,
making it undoubtedly unique compared to the other fishing towns nearby. It central position within
the Lofoten archipelago provides additional charm to a magnificently unique location.
After a short coach journey, we cross the Nappstraumen undersea tunnel near Napp. It unwinds
beneath the sea at a maximum depth of 63 metres and connects the islands of Vestvågøya and
Flakstadøya along the road linking Leknes to our enchanting destination - Reine. The famous lovely
fishing town located near the fjord of the same name is nestled at the foothills of the Lofoten
mountains creating a breathtaking landscape - the warmth and colour of the houses that used to
be inhabited by fishermen are in stark contrast with the surrounding steep peaks and cliffs. Reine is
a perfect example of local traditional architecture partially converted into modern cottages locally
known as rorbuer. On the way back to Vestvågøy, we cut through the administrative centre of the island and then
continue up towards Hagskaret, from where we can enjoy breathtaking views over the North Sea
and Vestfjord, between the Lofoten Islands and the mainland.
We descend towards the fjord as far as Sennesvik to rise once again to Einangen, another famous
viewpoint. Before returning to the ship we make another stop for photos to admire the Buksnesfjord

Main stops
Lofotr Vikingmuseum: Viking museum and traditional games
Aalan farm: cheese production process and cultivation of aromatic herbs, farmyard animals

The programme
We leave the port behind us on a coach headed to the Lofotr Vikingmuseum in Borg, a true Viking
Museum illustrating the history, myths and customs of this glorious people.
It is precisely here that we find the foundations of the largest Viking home ever discovered, of which
we can see an impressive life-size reproduction complete with bedrooms decorated with intricate
wood carvings, the hall, barns and stables.
We set off on a true journey back in time: as the adults enjoy exhibitions on Norse mythology,
observe interesting archaeological artefacts and witness the creation of handicrafts, children learn
more about the history of the Vikings and let loose as they play fun traditional games.
Now that we have become real experts on Viking culture, we can leave Borg behind us and head to
Aalan Gård.
We immerse ourselves into the enchanting rural atmosphere of Aalan Farm, a typical Lofoten farm
surrounded by peace and tranquillity.
We witness the production of the famous and multi-award winning local goat's cheese, which is
dried and flavoured using the aromatic herbs grown in the fields nearby. After learning all the
secrets of its processing, we cannot miss the chance of tasting some of it!
During our visit, we can observe the everyday activities in the farm and get acquainted with the
animals: petting the sweet little goats is an emotion that thrills both adults and children.

sheep, etc.
The next stage in our trip will be a stop at the panoramic viewpoint of Hagskaret, from where we
can enjoy a view of the Norwegian Sea and of the Vestfjord, which separates the islands from
mainland Europe.
Our excursion then moves on to Stamsund, a fishing village founded by Julius M. Johansen at the
beginning of the 20th century. A 'self-made' man, who became one of Norway's most successful
dried-fish producers and guano traders, he commissioned the construction of modern fishing
equipment, mooring quays, a refinery for cod liver oil, shops, homes for the fishermen and a church.
Before returning to our ship, at anchor in the Buksnesfjord, we enjoy a superb view from high up at

The programme
We leave Leknes (Gravdal)and travel eastwards along the main road.
Our first stop is Henningsvaer. One of Norway's most picturesque fishing villages, it nestles like a
jewel set among the surrounding mountain peaks. Until 1962, when the fishing industry on the
Lofoten Islands was at the height of prosperity, over 6,000 fishermen would live here from January
to April. Many artists have caught the light and the beauty of nature on these islands in their works.
We visit the Lofoten Hus Gallery, where we watch a multi-media presentation following the fishing
industry, nature and the inhabitants of the Lofoten Islands through the seasons.
We also find a photographic collection, which includes an exhibition on sea eagles and some shots
of the Lofoten Islands taken by the famous photographer Wilse, dating back to 70-90 years ago.
Our excursion continues on to Svolvær, the most important town on the Lofoten Islands.
Our next stop is the famous peak of Vaagekallen.
Here, well visit the Ice Gallery: as we enter, well be provided with a warm fur so we can contemplate
the incredible sculptures created in the ice by artists from all over the world, which are illuminated
and presented with background sounds and music.
After a stop for some free time to wander the streets of Svolvær, we take the same route back to
the island of Vestvågøy.
Leaving the main road, we now turn inland.
Awaiting us is a view of the mountain ridge of the Lofoten Islands, which forms a natural
breakwater. The ports on the eastern side of the islands are well protected from the Norwegian Sea
and are of major importance for the islanders.
During the last stop of our excursion, we make a photo stop at the panoramic viewpoint of
Hagskaret.
From here we can gaze across the Norwegian Sea, the Vestfjord and mainland Europe.
Our visit over, we return to the pier in Buksnesfjord.

In a nutshellDiscovering the history of Norway and Norwegian cod with an exceptional guide: Kalle Mentzen, a localfisherman selected by National Geographic Expeditions. Youll touch, breathe and savor the indissolublebond between fishing and the Lofoten islands, learn the age-old method of drying skrei, and discoverlost old relics in the little cod-liver oil museum. A multisensory adventure, including gastronomicspecialties.
Main stops
Henningsvær, ancient fishing village
Cod drying racks
Reserved visit to the Full Steam museum, a former cod-liver oil factory from 200 years ago
Tasting of typical cod-based products
The programme
There are two things Kalle Mentzen, the local fisherman selected by National Geographic
Expeditions, truly cares about. One is cod fishing, which has been the family business for
generations. The other is passing on the cultural memory of his people.
Alongside him, and with a small group of explorers, youll plunge back in time to the dawn of fish
processing and learn how much this is still a part of the local cultural identity.
In Henningsvær, youll learn how the cod who have always laid their eggs at the Lofoten islands
turned the area into the new Klondike in the 19th century: a genuine gold mine.
In the drying area, youll discover that the tradition of skrei, dried cod, has remained unchanged for
centuries. The fish dries on racks in the open air: sun, snow, and wind do the rest.
Then, Kalle will open the doors of Full Steam for you. He himself opened this family-run museum in
an ex trandamperiet, a 200-year-old cod-liver oil factory, where he gathers historic machinery and
artifacts that would otherwise be lost.
The visit is strictly reserved for our small group only, making this a unique experience. With his pride,
Kalle will allow you to experience the golden age of fishing here and now, while you taste some
local specialties accompanied by Lofottoddy, a cod-liver-based liqueur.
At the end of the day, youll know all about the special role of cod in Norwegian history and in Norse
sagas.

We leave the port and head for the centre of Molde, administrative centre of the County of Romsdal.
The city is located on the shores of the Romsdal fjord, surrounded by hills that provide a backdrop

stunning stretch of coast it covers has earned it the status of National Tourist Route.
We head towards Hustadvika, a stretch of water that can be spectacular to look at when rough, but
which is not much loved by sailors. It is full of underwater reefs and little islands and, when the
weather is fine, it is not uncommon to spot seals and whales swimming there.
A little further along, we have a photo stop in the delightful fishing village of Bud, overlooking the
ocean with views of the Bjørnsund islands, a group of islands that were once home to a vibrant,
flourishing fishing community, but which are now only a summer vacation retreat.
We head back to Molde, travelling up and down beautiful hillsides around another delightful natural
inlet, the Frænfjord.

The Gjølmunne suspended footbridge
Rest at the Hoven Restaurant
Return to the valley floor in the Loen Skylift
The programme
After a short journey, we reach the Loen resort on the opposite side of the fjord. This is the start of an
unforgettable adventure climbing to an altitude of over 1,000 metres along the Loen Via Ferrata!
We put on our climbing gear and set off up the mountain using the artificial structures that make
up the via ferrata: clipped to steel cables, we battle the rocky walls of the fjord with the help of
metal rungs and ladders as we climb towards the sky.
Along the way, we discover the unforgettable thrill of crossing the longest via ferrata bridge in
Europe, the 120-metre-long Gjølmunne suspended footbridge, which leads us out over the void at a
height of 750 metres!
As we pick our way up the side of the mountain, we cast our eyes over the magnificent landscape
that surrounds us: Mount Hoven, with its rocky ridges specked with the green of moss and lichen,
and the sparkling azure of the fjord far below.
At the end of our climb, we reach the summit of the mountain and take a well-earned rest at the
spectacular Hoven Restaurant, an experience made all the more memorable by the breathtaking
views through the enormous, cliff-top windows of the canyon below.
For our return, we will be taking the easy route, boarding the steepest aerial lift in the world, the Loen
Skylift, which takes us from the summit of Mount Hoven to the banks of the Nordfjord over a
thousand metres below in just a few minutes, with magnificent views of a whole cross-section of

We begin our excursion from the village of Olden, nestling at the head of the Innvikfjord, an arm of

glaciers, Olden is a popular resort for both residents and tourists alike.
Our coach will take us along the shores of the fjord to Loen, another popular holiday resort with a
very tiny population. Its beauty and wonderful location have attracted many tourists. Loen lies
between two fjords, not far from Lake Lovatnet, and is surrounded by various glaciers, towering
mountains and lush vegetation.
Our coach now moves on to the Kjenndalen valley, where we'll stop and walk to a wonderful
viewpoint to see the Kjenndalen glacier, one of the arms of the mightier Jostedalsbreen glacier, the
largest in mainland Europe.
Back on board our coach, we move on to the Kjenndalen mountain, where we'll stop briefly for
refreshments.
Next, we'll take a boat trip across Lake Lovatnet, during which we can relax and take in the
wonderful view. We'll be able to see the Ravnefjellet (Raven's Mountain), the ill-fated mountain
famous for the rockslides which caused tidal waves which destroyed many farms along the
lakeside twice last century.
On our arrival in Sande, we exchange the boat for our coach and the journey back to Olden.

We'll fly over the village of Olden nestling at the head of the 'Innvikfjord, a branch of the Nordfjord. A
pleasant village surrounded by towering mountains, superb waterfalls and several glaciers, Olden is
a popular resort for both residents and tourists alike.
Not far from the town we enter the boundless nature of the stunning Jostedal glacier. This is the
largest glacier in mainland Europe, stretching over 487 km2. The glacier has 22 named outlets,
many of which are within easy reach of Olden.
Our helicopter trip offers a spectacular, sensational scenario, a truly unique, unforgettable
experience. The ice has shaped the landscape over thousands of years. Geological faults and
crevices beneath the glacier have dug valleys and mountain passes. Unusual climatic conditions
caused the Jostedalen glacier to deteriorate and spread. In the past, its outlets rose or descended
down the valleys destroying farms, vegetation and people's lives. Although it was a natural disaster
at the time, this event has been extremely useful for today's scientists to study how plants and
animals have spread across virgin land. INFORMATIONS

as a baker before emigrating to the United States. Not bad for a town that was only recognised as a
separate municipality in 1854!
The highlight of our time in Haugesund is a visit to the Arquebus War Museum (Arquebus
Krigshistorisk Museum). Located in the inner stretch of the Førresfjord, this museum brings to life
various events associated with the Second World War, from the everyday lives of local people, the
merchant navys contribution to the war effort, defence operations and the 1940 invasion, the
enemy positions along the coast, the liberation, the fall of Berlin in 1945, and the allied victory in
Europe. During our visit, we learn all sorts of fascinating details. For instance, the word Arquebus
comes from the code name adopted by a local resistance fighter for communications made using
a clandestine radio transmitter. The museum is the largest in Norway, with over 2,000 m² of exhibit
space housed in an old farm building. The exhibits include manikins dressed in genuine uniforms
and historical costumes.
Following our visit to the museum, we make our way to the Steinsfjellet viewpoint which, at 227
metres above sea level, and with breathtaking views of Haugesund and the surrounding area, is a
favourite spot among locals for walks and trips to the country.
The next stop is at the Haraldshaugen, a national monument erected in 1872 to commemorate the
thousand-year anniversary of the Battle of Hafrsfjord, which was fought and won by King Harald
Hårfagre (Harald Fairhair) at Hafrsfjord near Stavanger in 872, leading to the unification of Norway.
Harald Hårfagre established his court at Avaldsnes, on the nearby island of Karmøy, while the
monument stands at a location believed to be the site of his burial, about 3 km north of the centre
of Haugesund.

Scenic tour and Åkrafjorden
Haugesund, Norways prettiest city, and residential districts
The Langfoss waterfall and the blue waters of the fjord
Eljarvik Farm
Ølen and the Unni Marie Rosemaling Centre, unique artworks and an enchanting garden
The programme
We set off on board our coach for a scenic tour that, over about an hour and a half, leads us
towards the Åkrafjorden.
First, we cut through Haugesund, passing the famous city hall considered the most handsome in all
of Norway and a number of residential districts before heading into open country.
Our first stop is a truly magical place, the Langfoss waterfall. With a total drop of 612 m, it is the fifth-
highest waterfall in Norway, and was included in CNNs list of the ten most beautiful waterfalls in the
world, a judgement echoed in many other quarters.
A boat will be waiting to whisk us across the blue waters of the fjord to the base of this natural
wonder which, according to legend, has mysterious powers that can boost fertility.
We disembark, then, at Eljarvik Farm where we risk remaining spellbound by the breathtaking view
of the falls and enjoy a delicious lunch before boarding our coach once again.
Our next stop is Ølen where we make a brief visit to Unni Marie Rosemaling, a one-of-a-kind
structure that houses a tourist information office, a small shop and a workshop.
Here, we find something rather unique waiting for us: Unni Marie is an internationally renowned
artist who specialises in rosemaling (painting images of roses), a traditional art form in Norway that
is on display both on the outside of the building and in the shop, where numerous items are
available for purchase.
We also visit the charming garden at the back of the house, which is tended by Unni Marie herself
who, it turns out, also has green fingers.
Our excursion has nearly reached its end, but it has one more treat in store, as we enjoy a little free
time and a sightseeing tour of Haugesund. INFORMATIONS

The programme
Capture the wildest soul of the North Sea, with all its birdsong and rare plumage, with Jan Kåre
Ness, a photographer selected by National Geographic Expeditions who specializes in bird
photography, plus your small group of explorers.
Jan not only has 30,000 shots of birds in his archive - he also organizes the Haugesund
photography festival and knows the nesting areas like the back of his hand.
On the way to Ryvarden Lighthouse, he will share the first secret of birdwatching with you: your eyes
should follow your hearing. Only then can you catch a glimpse of the queen of the northern skies:
the white-tailed eagle.
Jan will teach you how to spot birds hidden in the dense vegetation, such as the tree pipit, the
cuckoo, the golden-crowned kinglet, and birds that nest on the water, such as the eider duck, the
European shag, and the Arctic tern.
Under Ryvarden Lighthouse, he will tell you a story that flits between legend and reality: that of Floki
the great, who set sail from here to discover Iceland, guided by three small winged lookouts: three
ravens.
But now it's your turn to explore: you will be granted exclusive entry to the lighthouse, which is
usually closed to the public, for a typical Norwegian snack of waffles with jam and sour cream,
accompanied by tea or coffee.
Wear appropriate hiking shoes and clothing for the trail.
The tour may be canceled in bad weather.
This is one of the most popular experiences so book early.
Bring binoculars with you: they will be useful for birdwatching. INFORMATIONS

In a nutshellFrom the port city of Kiel to the historic town of Laboe, on the eastern bank of the Kiel Fjord.
Main stops
Kiel: major places of interest in the city, City Hall, Kiel Canal
Laboe: Naval Memorial to the Sailors who died in battle and exhibition inside, U995 submarine with
museum
The programme
We leave the port to start our panoramic tour of the city of Kiel. The capital of the Federal State of
Schleswig-Holstein boasts a long tradition as a maritime city and port, which pervades daily life.
Our route winds past the main points of interest in the city, including the City Hall and the
spectacular Kiel Canal, which links the North Sea to the Baltic Sea.
At the end of our city tour, our coach will take us to the eastern shore of the Kiel Fjord to the town of
Laboe, where we visit the Memorial to the Sailors who were killed in battle. The tower was first
erected to commemorate the soldiers of the German Navy who died in the First World War. Later, it
was also dedicated to the sailors who died in the Second World War. In 1954, it became a memorial
to all the fallen from the Navies of all nationalities.
After an interesting visit to the exhibition inside the monument, we climb to the top of the building to
enjoy the spectacular viewthat unfolds before us.
Lastly, the U995 submarine, one of the dreaded U-Boats that destroyed the allied ships in the north-
eastern Atlantic, awaits us on the nearby beach. Today, it houses a museum where we can learn
about some of the aspects of the hard life of the crew on board submarines.
Our visit to the memorial is over and we set off by coach for Hamburg airport.
We recommend wearing comfortable shoes.
This excursion is not recommended for guests with mobility problems.
The tour guides will leave the group at the end of our tour of Kiel. The journey to the airport does not
include a guide.
This excursion is reserved for guests who disembark at Kiel and whose flights depart after 4.00 p.m. INFORMATIONS

Our panoramic tour winds its way past the main points of interest in the city. First of all, our route
runs alongside the Lake formed by the River Alster in the city centre, and then crosses the
residential districts and the Jungfernstieg, the famous fashion street, lined with luxury boutiques
and shopping malls.
We drive past the Renaissance buildings of the City Hall and Stock Exchange and venture into the
more modern part of the city, with its parks and gardens, the television tower, 19th century buildings
