Introduction
CEEN1997 A.D(CEE)Non governmental and non profit making org Alternative energy sector – specialized in biomass
energy2009 A.D (CEEN)Prof Dr. Krishna Raj Shrestha - BHB -1997Promoted through CEE
Objectives
• To undertake adaptive research/impact study• To implement programs for sustainable
utilization • To empower women through capacity building
and transfer of technology• To mobilize and institutionalize rural
communities and provide technical supports and consultancy service to achieve above objectives.
Activities/Service
• Laboratory services for biomass/fuel and stove• Training on biomass and charcoal briquetting; designing of
molds, briquetting machine• Designing and testing of various combustion devices for
space heating and cooking• Gender sensitization and income generating activities for
women• Providing support- project/ dissertation of student
researchers• Interaction/orientation – interested crowd – students
Fabrication of stoves
Institutional low cost stove Perforated burner with blower
Clay lined stove with chimney
Gasifier stove
Agni stove Low cost can stove
Some of the dissertations
M.Sc. Thesis on briquetting unit - IOE
M.Sc. Thesis on stove testing- IOE
B.Sc. Project work on different raw materials
for briquetting- KU
Biomass laboratory and stove performance testing facility in CEEN
Adiabatic calorimeter, Analytical balance Muffle furnace, Drying oven
Equipments/facilities• Hodaka emission analyzer•Fluke Digital thermometer (dual)•Fluke Carbon Monoxide meter•Hoiki data logger•IR temp recorder•Pulveriser•Grinder•Hammer mill•Moisture meter• Digital thermocouple•Bacharach smoke pump•Drying oven•Muffle furnace•Spray welding facilityMuffle furnace
Testing methodology for briquette fueled stove at CEEN laboratory
Why not other contemporary methods available in market?
• WBT designed specially for wood fuel burning stovesDifficulties during experimentation
Difficult to extinguish, separate charcoal – direct densified briquette
Difficult to extinguish the carbonized briquette – beehive briquettes
Difference as fuel with respect to firewood
• Density of briquette = 2 X density of common fuel wood
• Porosity - very low • Briquette Char from combustion > denser than
wood or biomass charcoal• SPB > combustibility RPB
Where in the world??
• Japan - Kim H., kazuhiko and masayoshi S., “Bio-coal briquette as a technology for desulphurizing and energy saving”, In T. Yamada ed. Chapter34, 2001, 33-75
• Department of Management and Engineering ,Modified Water Boiling Test : Biomass Briquettes in Malawi
• Thailand -Renewable Energy Technologies in Asia: A Regional Research and Dissemination Program Phase II

• India- Vinita Bharti & Mamta Awasthi ,Pine Needle Charcoal Briquettes: Rural Technology Option In Pine Forest Region,
Department Of Energy & Environment, Nit, Hamirpur, H.P
Difference
High power test with hot start and shimmering test
Instruments
• Toshniwal Digital Bomb calorimeter with software Model no CC01/M2A
• Digital balance capacity 30 kg• Dual input Digital thermometer with Fluke
view software. Model no 54IIB• Timer • Wooden fixture for holding the probe• Utensil to boil water
Pre test jobs
• Well dried , uniform size• Kindles prepared ahead , pre weighted• Stabilization and familiarization- fuel wt,
water, vessel• Determination of LBP• Proper ventilation - no breeze • CV, moisture, specific heat of water, latent
heat of evaporation of water
Strength
• Simple and replicable• Preliminary understanding of stove
performance
Weakness
• Rough approximation of how efficiently the stove performs
• Controlled condition
Issues related to lab and field test
• No standard methodology for Briquette fueled stove
• Refresher trainings for Researchers• Accreditation• Occupational Health and Safety measure of
researcher
Our clients?
• Students – Masters, Bachelors thesis• Industry - Briquette entrepreneurs Stove manufacturers • Other organizations
