Second Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle C) A Sunday Reflection
Today’s gospel completes the three-fold manifestation of the Lord. Two
Sundays ago, in the feast of the Epiphany, He manifests himself to the
gentiles. Last Sunday, at his Baptism, the voice of the Father is heard:
“You are my beloved Son” “(Lk 3:22). Today Jesus performs his first
miracle at the request of his Mother and, the evangelist tells us, “his
disciples began to believe in him.” (Jn 2:11).
But consider this. Mary does not really ask for anything. She merely
points out that they “have no wine” (Jn 2:2); and after apparently being
rebuffed, turns to the servers: “Do whatever he tells you” (2:5). Her
attitude is one of confidence and trust in Jesus’ goodness and
providence. Let us imitate Mary in her trust and never hesitate to turn to
her in our every need. God bless you!
Fr. Luis
PS. Next week you will be invited to make your pledge for the Archbishop’s
Charities Development Drive (ABCD) campaign. Many of you are familiar with
this campaign and how we are all called as a parish to support it. If we all
contribute to this effort according to our possibilities we can reach our goal of
$289,000 for 2019, as well as our assessment of $92,000 for January-
December, 2019.
manos todas nuestras necesidades. Que Dios los bendiga.
P. Luis
PS.

2019 Archbishop’s Charity and Development Drive
(ABCD) Begins
Hope has a name… Jesus.
Hope has a name: Jesus. To put our faith in Jesus means we must put it
into action through charity. Our archdiocesan programs and ministries
effect change, share the love of Christ, and bring hope to people in need.
In the words of Pope Benedict, “A world without God is a world without
hope. A world without God is a world without a future.”
Once a year, we commit ourselves to the ongoing work of the Archdiocese
of Miami by supporting the ABCD. Next week, every parish in the
Archdiocese will unite to ask our Catholic community to support this year’s
annual appeal by making a gift. Please consider making a donation,
whether by responding to the Archbishop’s letter, making a gift online at
www.isupportabcd.org or turning in your pledge envelope at the Church.
Individually, we can change our own life, but together, we can change the
world. United, let us be One in Faith, One in Hope and One in Charity.
Life is God’s gift to us, and what we do with it is our gift to God.
nuestro regalo a Dios.

Holy Lives /Vidas Santas VENERABLE SANDRA SABATTINI — Born in Italy in
1961, the oldest of two children of a devout Catholic family. While she was pious from a young age, as a teenager she met a holy priest named Oreste Benzi and took part in the youth group he organized. She also participated in a summer program for teenagers to care for people who have severe disabilities. The experience changed her life.
She attended the University of Bologna with the goal of becoming a medical missionary in Africa, spending her weekends and summer vacations volunteering to care for drug addicts in rehabilitation centers.
While at the university, Sandra met Guido Rossi, who shared her dream of becoming a medical missionary in Africa, and soon they became engaged. But those dreams would not be realized; in 1984, when she was only 23, she was killed in a car accident. Sandra understood the need for being holy men and women: “Today there are too many merely good Christians, while the world needs saints.”

The Pope Speaks / Habla el Papa
General Audience, January 9, 2019*
[W]e now consider Jesus’ teaching on the need for perseverance in prayer. We see from the Gospels that Christ’s
entire life is steeped in prayer, born of his communion with the Father and the Holy Spirit who guides his every action. Jesus’ constant prayer is seen above all in the events of his passion. At the Last Supper, he intercedes for Peter’s perseverance in
faith (cf. Lk 22:32), and his last words from the cross are a prayer for forgiveness and a confession of trust in the Father’s
will. When the disciples ask Jesus to show them how to pray, he gives them the words of the “Our Father”…. As a good
Father, God answers every prayer in his good time and according to his saving plan. Though the unfolding of that plan remains mysterious, we can be confident
that, in the end, ours is a loving Father who longs to fulfill the desire for happiness present in every human heart.
