2020 Global Interdisciplinary Courses

GIC is a program that aims to develop individuals who can actively disseminate the knowledge and achievements they have gained through international and interdisciplinary study to the rest of the world. At the same time, by designing a shared curriculum and strengthening mutual collaboration between each campus, it will bring together the knowledge and wisdom dispersed throughout the university. Therefore, GIC will become a platform that will establish connections between basic education and specialized education, among undergraduate faculties, and between the university and high schools.

2016年4月よりGICセンター（Center for Global Interdisciplinary Courses）では英語（またはその他の外国語）による授業で一定単位を取得した学生に修了証を与えるプログラムを提供しています。これにはすべての学部学生が参加できます。

GICセンターはスーパーグローバル大学創成支援事業の一環として2014年11月に設立された組織で、国際的かつ学際的な人材の育成を主たる目的としています。世界には政治・経済・社会問題、文化摩擦、民族対立、環境問題など、解決すべき難問が山積しています。また、科学技術や医療の研究においては、常に最先端の成果を出すことが求められます。これからの若い世代は、複合的な知識と方法論を駆使してこのような課題に取り組み、自らが得た結論を積極的に世の中へ発信していかなければなりません。GICセンターは意欲ある学生が、英語（または、その他の外国語）でこれを実践するための効果的な学習機会を提供します。

教育機関としての大学が、母語のほかに少なくとも英語を駆使できる国際的な人材を育成することは、いまや社会の要請であり、学生のニーズです。これに応えるべく、GICセンターが2020年度に設置する授業も、

春学期・秋学期それぞれ約30コマにのぼります。GIC科目は学部の履修案内にしたがって誰でも自由に履修でき、英語のレベルに応じたセレクションもありません。所属学部や英語力に関係なく、意欲あるものが好きなだけ学べる制度です。

世界に広く関心を持ち、人との積極的な交際を奨励した福澤先生は、「学問のすゝ め」を「人にして人を毛嫌いすることなかれ」と結んでいます。ならば我々は「人にして言語を毛嫌いすることなかれ」です。

The Global Interdisciplinary Courses (GIC), a program that offers courses in English (or other foreign languages) and awards certifi-cates of completion to students who obtain a certain number of credits, was launched in April 2016. The program is open to all undergraduate students.The Center for Global Interdisciplinary Courses was established in November 2014 as part of the Top Global University Project, with the principle objective of developing international and interdisci-plinary personnel. We face a growing number of complex problems around the world that require solutions ̶ from political, economic and social issues to cultural frictions, ethnic conflicts, and environ-mental issues. At the same time, we are constantly in search of the latest research breakthroughs in the fields of science and technology and medicine.The younger generation must tackle such problems by making use of complex knowledge and methodologies and actively sharing their research findings with society. The Center for Global Interdisciplinary Courses offers effective learning opportunities in English (or other foreign languages) to motivated students.

Universities, as educational institutions, must develop individuals who have a good command of their native language and at least English ̶ this is required in order to meet the demands of society and the needs of individual students. In order to meet such demand, GIC will offer around 30 classes each semester in the 2020 academic year. GIC courses can be taken freely according to the course registration guides for each undergraduate faculty and there are no prerequisites for English language ability. The program is based on a system that allows motivated students to learn as much as they want. Fukuzawa, who had strong interest in the wider world and encour-aged active interaction between people with true and open minds, concluded the book An Encouragement of Learning with the sentence: “People should not dislike one another.” Similarly at the Center for Global Interdisciplinary Courses we encourage students to “not dislike other languages.”Under the banner of “Take the GIC Challenge!” we are keen to welcome highly motivated students who will take on this exciting new challenge.

The Meaning of GIC

⃝ GIC認定科目｜GIC-certified Courses各学部や他のセンターの設置科目で GICプログラムにふさわしく英語（またはそれ以外の外国語）で実施される科目（合計約 4 0 0）を「GIC 認定科目」として認定しています。

There are approximately 400 courses held in English (or other foreign languages) at centers and undergraduate faculties across Keio University that have been accredited as “GIC-certified Courses.”

⃝ GIC設置科目｜GIC Center Courses様々な大学で教鞭をとる一流の講師陣がそれぞれの専門分野の授業を英語で行います。自然科学分野では化学や環境にスポットを当てた授業、その他、音楽、 演劇、武士道、貧困・移民・紛争といった社会問題など、さまざまなテーマを取り上げていきます。また、現代ビジネス論では日々刻 と々変化する global businessの 展望をビジネス界の第一線で活躍する講師陣から学ぶことができるでしょう。

World-class lecturers who teach at various universities will conduct classes in their specialized fields in English. GIC offers courses in a variety of subjects: from natural sciences courses in chemistry and the environment to music, drama, and Bushido, and courses that deal with social problems such as poverty, immigration, and international disputes. Also for the “Topics in Contemporary Business” course, students can learn about the prospects of a rapidly changing global business environment from expert lecturers who are at the forefront of the business world.

日本語で開講される科目と同じレベルの内容を英語で学習することが前提となります。 詳しい講義内容や履修条件はシラバスに記載されています。Students are expected to study in English the same level of content as regular Japanese courses. Further details about the coursecontent and registration requirements are available in the syllabus.

試験やレポートもすべて英語です。Yes.

試験やレポートもすべて英語になるのでしょうか？｜Are all examinations and class assignments in English?

GICを履修できる人数はどのぐらいですか？｜How many students can register for a GIC course?授業により定員が異なります。ディベート、プレゼンテーション、アカデミック・スキルズ、実技などが中心の科目は定員が15～25名程度、講義形式の科目は定員が50名～100名程度で設定されています。また初回の授業で選考を行う科目もあります。履修希望者が定員を超えた場合は抽選を行います。The quota differs between classes. For courses centered on debates, presentations, academic skills, and practical skills, the quota is approximately 15 to 25 students, while for lecture-style courses it is set between 50 and 100 students. There are also courses that screen students during the first class. A lottery will be held when the number of students wishing to register for a course exceeds the quota.

G ICの募集はいつ行われますか？｜When can students apply for GIC courses?事前の登録は不要です。春学期4月の履修申告時にGICウェブサイトや履修案内に従って履修をしてください。Students do not need to register for GIC courses in advance. Please follow the GIC website and faculty Course Registration Guides and register for courses during the Spring Semester course registration period in April.

認定証は単位取得後直ぐに発行されますか？Will the certificate be issued immediately after completing the requirements for the GIC program?各年度末に単位取得状況を確認し、新年度の4月に発行されます。As the total number of credits awarded are confirmed at the end of each academic year, the GIC certificate is not issued until April of the new academic year.
