Led by Greek-born singer, accordionist, and composer Magda Giannikou, Banda Magda incorporates Brazilian samba, French chanson, folk tunes, and South American music into an e� ervescent blend of world pop that feels totally modern and accessible to all. Drawing on the band’s global background, this exciting group combines international rhythms with jazz improvisation, cinematic arranging, audience participation, mid-century classics, and world music sung in 6 languages!

GRAMMY-nominated pianist and composer Gerald Clayton hails from jazz royalty as the son of esteemed Los Angeles bassist/arranger John Clayton and nephew of alto saxophonist Je� Clayton. The artist has honed a highly interactive sound woven from a vast array of sonic threads, and for this matinee, he shares some of the exquisite repertoire from his recent Motema Records release, Tributary Tales.

Band leader, bassist, and SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director Marcus Shelby and his fabulous orchestra highlight the many moods of America’s most celebrated jazz composer: Duke Ellington! With over 3,000 compositions, Duke’s music was heralded as “beyond category,” and provided the world with some of the most enduring melodies ever written.

Sends jazz musicians and poets into middle school humanities classrooms to unlock the history of jazz from a social, historical, and creative perspective.

Collaborates with schools in strengthening existing music instruction programs by making jazz education accessible to the Bay Area public school community.

SFJAZZ welcomes renowned spo-ken word poets and jazz musicians to celebrate the power of our stories. This event will feature Jazz In the Mid-dle students, youth performers from YouthSpeaks, and our star-studded sta� of Teaching Artists for an af-ternoon of poetry, jazz, and commu-nity. Hosted by Poet Laureate, Marc Bamuthi Joseph.

SCHOOL DAY CONCERTS
These free performances are tailored to students in grades K-12 with leading jazz artists and educators at the SFJAZZ Center’s beautiful Miner Auditorium, as well as direct to public and charter middle schools across San Francisco and Oakland. Students experience jazz in all its forms, explore how the African Diaspora shaped our musical landscape, participate in a highly interactive environment, and learn how jazz is alive, relevant, and continuing to grow today.
OPEN SOUND CHECKS
Open Sound Checks at SFJAZZ are a special, behind-the-scenes opportunity for schools and community groups to witness the critical preparation that goes into making the performance a success. Select Open Sound Checks are more hands-on and interactive in nature.
Since 1983, SFJAZZ has reached out to youth with in-school performances and interactive programs. From fi eld trips to our unique SFJAZZ Center Auditorium, to hands on learning
in their very own classrooms, our School Programs give students access to jazz’s rich and critical history.
