WELCOME TO OHIOPYLE O nce known as Falls City, the town of Ohiopyle is surrounded by the beauty of the 20,500 acre Ohiopyle State Park that will satisfy any recreational interest. The Youghiogheny River Gorge, Ohiopyle Falls, Cucumber Falls, and Ferncliff Peninsula are just a few of the geologic features that drew tourists in the early days of railroad excursions and continue to draw visitors today. The trail between Ohiopyle and Confluence was the first completed section of the Great Allegheny Passage in 1986. Heading in the other direction, toward Connellsville, you will find yourself pedaling over the Ohiopyle High and Low Bridges. The High Bridge offers a commanding view of the Youghiogheny Gorge. In town, a former train station serves as a visitor center. Sherman Street, just a few blocks in length, runs from the train station through the center of town. Local eateries, ice cream and specialty shops are located throughout this small town. The Community Center, a schoolhouse-turned- gathering place, hosts activities from Bingo to Yoga. Former school rooms are filled with a pizza shop, handmade wares, and a local specialty food store. Be sure to visit the new Ohiopyle State Park Visitor’s Center located at 124 Main Street. It is the perfect starting point to orient yourself to the park and the Laurel Highlands area. It has both indoor and outdoor overlook areas for spectacular views of the falls. Inside the center you will find a myriad of exhibits that will introduce you to the park’s ecology, history and help to give you the tools to explore the area.
