Regular readers of the Events On magazine may remember a few columns written by our old friend Jack Kelly last year about his time at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Jack and his cohorts also drove from Blackpool to Paris “ because it seemed like a good idea at the time” and posted an hilarious video of their exploits, one of which was a brief stop in Wollaston!! Well they are back, read on about their latest project.

“What's the crack, Jack? Last year, my friends and I shot a documentary that saw us drive all the way from Blackpool Tower to the Eiffel Tower. In a day. As young and inexperienced new drivers, it almost killed us – but what resulted was a comedy of errors. The film became very much about the characters in each car, about their childishness and naivety. Things went wrong, everyone got stressed and the clear flaws of the characters made great entertainment. You can check out 600 Miles for completely free here – http://Tiny.cc/600Miles

Due to the fantastic reaction from the first film, we’re now planning the sequel, which we’re hoping will be even bigger and better than before. 1000 Miles will see the original line-up (with a twist) take on Lands End to John O’Groats, the entire length of the United

Kingdom. We’re really excited about this film as we were overwhelmed by the positive response from the first one, we can’t wait to get back to making people laugh at our misfortune. Our adventure kicks off on July 5th.

Last time, we weren’t allowed to use Sat Navs. This time, it’s motorways. We have to do everything on A-roads, travelling through towns, cities and villages. Along the way, we’ll be completing various activities and, as ever, there’ll be a competitive element to the drive.

Unfortunately, making a film like this does require a certain amount of money. Which is why we’re reaching out to members of the public to help fund it. We really want to make it the best coming of age, road trip documentary we can, but we can’t do that without a budget behind the project. Things such as film equipment, large amounts of media storage and a dozen tanks of fuel don’t come cheap. We’d love to be able take this film to festivals or even potentially sell it to a broadcaster, but for that, it needs to be up to a certain standard.

We’re not expecting to raise thousands, or for people to empty their bank accounts for us, but any small amount of donation at all would allow us to have more scope with this film. We’re also not expecting anything for free and are offering a whole host of perks for different levels of money donated. Some of which aren’t half bad.

Even if you can’t donate any money, you can still really help us out. We’re looking for suggestions of challenges to do and places to visit whilst on the trip. Anything you think might be good for the film, however weird and wonderful it may be, please do let us know! You can fire me over an email at [email protected]

Welcome to this month’s Soul ‘in Around. Firstly apologies for the abridged version this month! I had a profile half prepared for you on a famous Soul artist, only for my computer to crash just before the deadline. At the risk of sounding like a ‘technophobe’ computers really do suck at times! On my list of candidates for ‘Room 101’ if ever I got on there. Anyway will bring you the piece I was preparing next month. So what’s happening round Northants and Beds this month? If you have picked up a copy of the magazine early enough! The May Day weekend sees some great events dotted around. Three take place on Saturday 2nd May ‘Soul in the Attic’ Northern Soul Night is held upstairs at Rushden Working Men’s Club in Griffith Street NN10 ORL. This is the second of a new night for the Club. The first one back in February was a real success and practically sold out! It’s £5 admission and runs from 7.30pm to 12.00am. It is a good idea to call 07905 028003 to reserve your place in advance to ensure entry, as capacity is limited. Also on the 2nd ‘The Dinosaur’ presents an evening of 60s and 70s Soul and Motown! At The Flower Pot 25 Tavistock Street Bedford MK40 2RB it runs from 8.30pm to 1am, admission is free! The ‘Dinosaur’ holds a number of nights around the Bedford area and can be contacted at [email protected] for more information. Over at Northampton there is a night of Motown, Reggae and Northern Soul on the 2nd at ‘The Cotton Club’ Far Cotton W.M.C. Main Road Northampton NN4 8EN. Billed as ‘May Days Soul’ it features resident DJ Tony Gee! It kicks off at 7.30pm and finishes at midnight and its £6. o.t.d. admission. I have been over to The Cotton Club a number of times and can recommend it. Great dance floor! They don’t mind a bit of talc on it either! Sunday 3rd May is the date for the next instalment of ‘The Sunday Soul Sessions’ at The Three Cocks Pub, Kettering NN16 8DJ, very apt don’t you think! The DJ part of the postcode (don’t know what you lot were thinking) Anyway this night is put together by good friends of mine Steve Scotney and Brian Goucher, it is held on the first Sunday of every month. The idea is to listen to and discover some lesser known ‘Soul Gems’ from the past and today. Budding DJs and collectors are welcomed along to spin some of their tunes in the four half hour slots available between 7pm and 11pm. If you fancy a go, call Brian on 07971 104541 or Steve on 07908 533561 or just pop along for a listen. The Dinosaur is back around Bedford! For another two dates during May. Saturday 16th May is ‘The Foresters Arms’ Union Street MK40 2SF it’s a night of Northern Soul and Motown from 8.30pm till late. The Foresters is a good size venue, not far from the town centre. May is the annual ‘Bedford Mod’s Reunion’ this takes place in ‘The End Shed’ at The Gordon Arms 118 Castle Road MK40 3QY a fantastic venue with large sprung wooden dance floor in Bedford’s ‘Notting Hill’ Music will be a mix of 60s Motown, Stax/ Atlantic Oldies and some Classic Northern Soul. Things get underway at 7.30pm and finish late! For info on all ‘Dinosaur events’ contact him on the email address above. In Northampton, Wednesday 27th May is the next Midweek Northern Soul & Motown Night at ‘The Jeckyll & Hyde’ Wellingborough Road NN1 4DZ, these nights are coming along nicely after starting a few months back, with the Lads and Lasses from the ‘Unlikable Scooter Club’ putting in regular appearances there! It is an open deck (or CD) policy, so if you fancy bringing something along to spin then do. It’s a nice busy venue with room outside to park your scooter up and a small dance floor, 7.30 approx. Is kick off time and finish is anything up to midnight, call 07905 028003 for info. Staying in Northampton, Saturday 30th May is ‘The Northern Soul, Motown & Rocksteady Collectives’ latest night at Monks Park W.M.C. This is just up the road from The Jeckyll in Wellingborough Road NN1 4EN. I made my first visit there a few months back and had a great night! It has a large upstairs room with good dance floor, and nice roof top patio area outside. Its £5 o.t.d. and runs from 7pm until midnight, DJS are Steve & Rolfe with Guests! Lastly: some news from ‘The Soul Junction’ Stanwick, Northants. Which should appeal to Northants. & Beds folk alike it’s an early shout out for their ‘Castaways & Nite Spot Soul Nights’ reunion night 2! Friday 19th June. The first one back in January, sold out very quickly, so unfortunately there were some disappointed people. The venue has increased the capacity limit to over 200 now, so hopefully they can cater for all wanting to come. It should be another packed night with the added bonus of making the use of the Courtyard Hotels wonderful patio and garden areas outside (weather permitting) Original DJ’S ‘Brother’ Louie Martin & Rob James are back with guests.
