Thepetition,whichmakesAttorneyGeneral(AG)MukulRohatgiapartyalongwiththeUnionofIndia,contendsthattheappointmentofthetoplawofficerhasbeenbasedonapickandchoosepolicyatthebehestofpoliticalmasters.ThepetitionsaysonlyapersonwhohasallthequalificationstobeaSupremeCourtjudgecanbeconsideredforappointmentasAG.ItsaysthatthequalificationsrequiredforappointmentofaSupremeCourtjudgeandtheAttorneyGeneralofIndiaarethesame,buttheprocedureforappointmentadoptediscompletelydifferent.ItfurthersaysthattheofficeofaSupremeCourtjudgeisfullyaccountable,transparent,withoath,underpublicscrutinyandwithanagebar,whereastheofficeoftheAttorneyGeneraliscompletelyunaccountable,nontransparent,withoutoath,withoutanyagebar.

Researchersfoundthatbothsurfaceandsubsurfacewaterstorageinthebasinshowstrongyeartoyearvariability.Duringthemonsoonof2006,whichcanbeconsideredasadroughtyear,therewasa30%deficitinwaterstorageinthebasinwhencomparedtothatoftheotheryears.TheresearchwascarriedoutusingthesatellitesGravityRecoveryandClimateExperiment(GRACE)andEnvisat.Thestudyalsousedinsitu(field)observations,whichwereacquiredfromBangladesh.However,withinsituobservations,itisdifficulttostudylargeareasasmeasurementsaredoneatsinglepoints.Hence,amultisatelliteapproach,whichgivesabetterunderstandingofthespatialvariationofwaterrelatedobservables,wasnecessary.
