Saturday April 24th Aweipo Gallery presents “Constants and Waves”…. imagine a whirlwind of local talent ranging from the traditional to the contemporary, with over 20 of the island’s current practicing artists exhibiting a range of works on paper, paintings, photographs, as well as sculptural and mixed media pieces.
This exhibition will include works from artists such as Alison Chapman-Andrews, John Stuart, Winston Kellman, Everick Lynton, Sheena Rose, Nicholas Burnett, Corrie Scott, Heidi Berger, Martina Pilé and Susan Alleyne-Forde.

The Phoenix is the mythological bird which lives for several hundred years before devouring itself in fire and then beginning life anew, arising from the ashes, as a young Phoenix. This concept of rebirth or new life, directly connected with previous lives, and by extension immortality, is a metaphor extensively used in Norma Talma’s work.Norma’s oeuvre has gone through different stages and phases during her long and distinguished career. However, a common thread allows the viewer to clearly follow the progression of her creativity. This continuity in her themes, as well as in the use of various techniques, has been consistent from the early seventies. It is significant that her favourite and characteristic images of the sun, the sea, the clouds, and nature in general, have survived decades of visual exploration through her assemblages/collages using mixed media as a permanent trade mark in her work.Her current exhibition enables us to witness yet another new page in her life. Like the Phoenix myth, which is recognized for its gentleness, by living only on dew so as not to harm nature, Norma’s work succeeds in perpetuating her own legend by using a subtle translation of nature through a creative exploration of handmade paper.The series “After the Rain”, “Shellscape”, and “Windy Fields” all typically depict Norma’s close relationship with nature. To emphasise the prime importance of the forms she creates a three-dimensional surface using layers of paper in a more sculptural manner.
The handmade paper becomes part and parcel of the work of art. The introduction of found material adds to the complexity of the compositions without distracting the viewer from the sensory quality of her themes.The Amerindian series treats the surface in a different manner. Though its bidimensionality contrasts with the nature series, it conserves this rich tactile quality throughout. In both” Amerindian Images” and “Amerindian Memories”, we are presented with a different reading of the images and content. Still there is a common denominator. The interaction of the multiple layers of handmade paper, combined with the linoprinting technique, reinforces the ever present sensory aspect of Norma’s work. Interestingly, in “Out of Shadow” #1 and #2, and “Regeneration” #1 and #2, Norma has personalized her sentiments so that these works combine the essence and artistic preoccupation of her work. The boldness and force of the first two and the gentleness, subtle treatment and symbolic content of the second two, reveal the continuity and revival of the artist through her tireless dedication to her own art as well as the development of art on a national scale.Finally “Phoenix” #1 literally fills us with pleasure, energy, and the wish to continue this intricate and captivating artistic voyage with Norma Talma. Its colourful combination of tones, imposing sculptural presence, and upward composition, set the tone for many more exhibitions in the future.

AWEIPO GALLERY PHOENIX by NORMA TALMA
Artist StatementFor this 2010 solo exhibition, I continue my exploration of paper as an art medium. Engaged in a total art production, I have created the media as well as the artwork. However, the paper is simply the vehicle to express my feelings, thoughts and observations. This exhibition includes several sculptural collages. I have taken the linocuts to a further dimension, in that each one is printed on a “paper painting”, some with collage elements, and consequently they are all one of a kind. I have not been restricted by the rectangular format of the linocut, but have printed entire blocks, and parts of blocks, as I might have constructed and composed a painting or collage. Thematically, my work falls into three categories. First, the exploration of the patterns and forces of nature continues in the series “Born of the Sea”, “Shells on the Beach”, and “Shellscape”, as well as “Windy Fields” and “Song of the Waves”. The last three years of my life have been an arduous journey through devastating loss and sickness, but I continue to express joy and the affirmation and renewal of life in my art. This is evident in the series, “After the Rain”, “Out of the Shadows”, and finally “Phoenix” which exemplifies my present frame of mind and is the title of this exhibition.The third section of my work is informed by images of Amerindian and other early civilizations, as they represent the creation and continuity of life. These have become part of my personal iconography as shown in ”Mother Earth”, “Family Totem”,” Rebirth” and “Regeneration”. More than ever, my work reflects my philosophy of life in a poetic way, and has become more intensely personal. I present these works as a challenge as well as encouragement to others on similar journeys.Norma Talma [email protected]

Musical THE SEVEN TONALITIES OF BLUE , Was performed April 10th and 11th in the Walcott Warner Theatre.
Directed by Leandro Soto, Cuban Artist, the piece is inspired by the Yoruban Orishas, Yemaya (Goddess of the Ocean) and Eleggua (Son of Yameya and God of the pathways/communication and innovation).
Integrating dance, poetry, theatre, media, music and song influences of the Caribbean; West African, European, Asian and Native American, the Seven Tonalities of Blue explores the many aspects of the female psyche.

Orisha are guardian spirits.The Lucumi Yoruba believe in one Higher Power. They call him Olodumare.They believe that each person has a Guardian Spirit called an “Orisha”. Orisha are aspects of the Supreme Being that are manifested as forces of nature. When Yoruba slaves were brought to the New World they brought their beliefs with them. This belief system is known as Lukumi in Cuba, and Puerto Rico, though it is often referred to as “Santeria”. These beliefs are known as Candomble in Brazil, and Shango Baptist in Trinidad.
Yemayá lives and rules over the seas and lakes. She also rules over maternity in our lives as she is the Mother of All. Her name, a shortened version of Yeyé Omo Eja means "Mother Whose Children are the Fish" to reflect the fact that her children are uncountable. All life started in the sea, the amneotic fluid inside the mother's womb is a form of sea where the embryo must transform and evolve through the form of a fish before becoming a human baby. In this way Yemayá displays herself as truly the mother of all. She partakes of Olokun's abundance as the source of all riches which she freely gives to her little sister Oshún. She dresses herself in seven skirts of blue and white and like the seas and profound lakes she is deep and unknowable. In her path of Okutti she is the queen of witches carrying within her deep and dark secrets. Her number is seven for the seven seas, her colors are blue and white, and she is most often represented by the fish who are her children.

The May exhibition at the Queen's Park Gallery is presented in honour of the 80th birthday of Kamau Brathwaite.
The work reflects an understanding of the themes and approach to writing that is evidenced in Kamau's work. It is not an illustration to one of his poems, but captures the spirit of his life and work.
The exhibition is a group show with each Artist supplying an explanatory text to accompany the artwork.
The exhibition's private view is Sunday MAY 16TH AT 6.30PM AND CONTINUES UNTIL JUNE 26TH.

Rosemary Parkinson, author of Culinaria:The Caribbean and Nyam Jamaica, is the daughter of artist the late Gordon Parkinson. She has exhibited in the Caribbean and Europe. Rosemary now resides between Jamaica & Barbados. She is writing BarbadosBu’n-Bu’n, the third in her series on the culinary arts of the Caribbean. NAGC Consultant Curator Nerys Rudder, on the invitation of Rotary International, will participate in a cultural and vocational exchange that will take her to the USA through Oregon and Northern California. For 6 weeks, starting April 23rd Nerys will visit 10 cities where she will make presentations to Rotary groups and visit galleries, raising awareness about the work of Barbadian visual artists and cultural producers. NAGC CONSERVATION PROGRAMME WORKING TO RESTORE THE MONTEFORE FOUNTAINThe National Art Galley Committee is pleased to announce the continuation of it's Conservation and Education programme with the visit of the Puerto Rican objects conservator Mr. Angel Santiago-Torres. Mr. Santiago-Torres is currently restoring the Montefiore Fountain, a public monument dating back to 1864 and located opposite the Coleridge Street Library.
This fountain previously located at Beckwith Place and moved to its present location in 1940, was given to the city by John Montefiore as a memorial to his father, John Castello Montefiore who died from Cholera in 1854. This Monument is one of the many fine examples of unique Barbadian built heritage that can be found in the area which has prompted the bid for the nomination of Bridgetown and the Garrison as a World Heritage Site.
The Ministry of Transport and Works and the National Conservation Commission are assisting with this important restoration activity.

The exhibition "Exposed: Images of Yesteryear" is on at the Barbados Museum, St. Ann's Garrison, St. Michael, from April 09 to June 11, 2010. This is your chance to see Farley Hill Great House before it burned and many other rare images of a Barbados that few of us will recognise. Immerse yourself in scenes of the island captured by early photographers both known and unknown. Take a visual stroll down Broad Street and the Pierhead in the late 1800s, both teaming with activity. See what Roebuck Street and River Road looked like over 100 years ago, and beyond the city limits, take in Joe’s River and Bathsheba of the early 1900s. Barbados of yesteryear is exposed through landscape images, portraits and even family albums.
The scenes can be yours too, as reproductions of the images may be requested.
These selections from the museum's collection allow visitors to examine the earliest commercially available photographic processes such as daguerreotype, tin type, albumen, glass plate negatives, callotype and the early twentieth century use of photographic gel images.
This is a unique opportunity to see the changing views of Barbados through the photographic lens shortly after the invention of photography in 1832.

An exhibition will be held at the Barbados Museum of photographs from each participant in the recent National Geographic Photo Camp Barbados.
From May 15 to July 14, 2010, members of the public will have a chance to see the results of the four-day workshop, during which disadvantaged students documented their environment under the guidance of National Geographic photographers Sam Abell and Matt Moyer. The Photo Camp was sponsored by the US Embassy, the Barbados Museum & Historical Society, Breakwater Management Services, Goldcorp Insurance Company, Chancery Chambers and Allstate International Assignments Limited, and many other public and private sector entities contributed generously to make it a success. The work coming out of this initiative is outstanding. Come see for yourself! Since the 1950's he has authored many outstanding ground-breaking works, including poetry and non-fiction, and awards recognising his achievements include the Guggenheim Fellowship, the Fulbright Fellowship, and recently, the Griffin Prize for "Born to Slow Horses". He is best known for originating the concept of Nation Language to describe the indigenous Caribbean languages of peoples descended from slaves.
