Nestled at the convergence of the historic Grand and Speed Rivers, Cambridge is made up of four neighbourhoods; Galt, Hespeler, Preston and Blair. Known for its picturesque limestone buildings and heritage, the city compares to a European ‘Dickensian’ setting.

Discover one of the three downtown core areas in Galt, Hespeler and Preston for the perfect mix of unique dining, live theatre, museums and one of a kind shopping. Known as the longest continually operating farmers’ markets, no trip to Cambridge is complete without a stop at the Cambridge Farmers’ Market.

Take in the true spirit of community while shopping local. If it’s the outdoors that you’re after, explore over 365 hectares of parkland, 96 parks or venture down some of the many one of a kind walking, biking and hiking trails along the Speed and Grand Rivers.

Cambridge is a welcoming and dynamic community that has something for everyone. Discover it all for yourself.

The City of Waterloo is a dynamic and vibrant mid-size city with all the

amenities and attractions of a large urban centre along with the charm and

character of a smaller, rural community.

The uptown core buzzes with over 400 distinctive restaurants, cafes and

boutiques, many of which are independently owned. The uptown vibe,

coupled with an increase in chic condo development, provides a lifestyle

that appeals to young professionals and empty-nest baby boomers. With

city-wide trails, parks and green spaces, festivals and markets and premier

recreation facilities, there’s always something happening in Waterloo to keep

residents and visitors active and engaged.

Waterloo is also recognized for its architectural designs. The Seagram

Lofts, Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery, Centre for International Governance

Innovation, Perimeter Institute of Theoretical Physics & Knox Presbyterian

are all award-winning buildings that mix our storied past with our future of

discovery.

Considered Silicon Valley of the north, Waterloo has been ranked among the

top 20 startup hubs in the world. Waterloo’s prosperity is at an all-time high

and consistently outperforms provincial standards for wealth, educational

attainment and talent.

A thriving area of working farms, historic villages and small businesses. Many points in

North Dumfries have easy access off hwy. 401 which lead to conservation area hiking,

canoeing, and a wide range of farm gate experiences.

With the rolling hills of the countryside, scattered with ponds and rivers, North Dumfries

is the go-to destination for recreation and relaxation. There are numerous recreation

opportunities; community parks and a state-of-the-art Community Complex that boasts

an NHL size ice surface, a walking track and community rooms. The outdoor facilities of

the complex include soccer fields, a walking trail, playground and splash pad.

Heritage walking tours will take you by some of the 20 designated historical landmarks

including stately stone houses, log homes, one-room schoolhouses and barns that are

recognized and protected under the Ontario Heritage Act. Visit the quaint Village of

Greenfield which was the first Heritage Conservation District in North Dumfries. This

small historic 19th century mill settlement was founded by the Goldie Family. The District

includes a four storey limestone mill and stacked plank grain house known as 'Greenfield

Mills', along with mill race, pond, original sluice gates, the 'River House' and 'Brick

House', the original residences of the Goldie family, and six 'salt-box' row cottages used

to house workers- all of which created a tight-knit milling community.

The Township of Wellesley is home to a culturally vibrant community. Contributing to this vibrancy is the abundance of community spirit in volunteerism.

This community hosts numerous events and festivals throughout the year including the Wellesley Apple Butter & Cheese Festival.

With a combined population of just over 10,500 the Township includes Bamberg, Crosshill, Hawkesville, Linwood, Heidelberg, St. Clements, Wallenstein and Wellesley settlement areas. Wellesley, St. Clements and Linwood are the township’s largest towns.

The towns are mostly agricultural where locals still converse in Deitsch (a German dialect) and are delighted to sell their homemade sausages, maple syrup, shoo-fly pies, apple butter, cooked cheese, butter, bacon, local Mennonite furniture and even quilts right out of their shops, farms or homes. No Sunday sales.

The Township of Woolwich is a beautiful and authentic community of communities, and home to many wonderful places, attractions and events. While travelling through the rural landscape you will find many distinct towns and communities, each featuring unique landscapes and natural areas, innovative businesses, shopping options and specialty foods. In the Village of St. Jacobs, discover the array of wonderful restaurants, a microbrewery, upscale hotel options and Drayton Theatre.

We are very proud of the bounty of fresh, local food in the Township, direct from Woolwich’s many farms. For authentic food experiences, visit farm gate stands dotted throughout the Township and spend time at the St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market.

While you’re here, take some time to visit West Montrose, home to the “Kissing Bridge,” the last remaining covered bridge in Ontario. From there, Winterbourne’s majestic two-span, single-lane steel bridge crossing the Grand River is only up the road. The unique architecture of these classic structures exhibit some of Woolwich’s heritage.

Woolwich’s reputation as a favourite location for cyclists is increasing and we are the proud host of the new Steaming Nostril Cycling Race - a challenging cross-country race held at the end of March.

Did You Know? West Montrose Covered Bridge, also known as the "Kissing Bridge", is a covered bridge in West Montrose, Ontario, within Waterloo Region and the last type of this style of bridge in Ontario. Built in 1880–1881 by John Bear, the bridge is still used by pedestrians, buggy traffic and vehicles weighing less than three tonnes over the Grand River.

When the sun goes down in the Waterloo Region, the FUN HEATS UP!To understand the nightlife of the Waterloo Region you have to first delve into the demographics of the area. I know what you’re thinking, how can I talk about fun by leading with boring? Please bear with me. You see, the Region of Waterloo, which comprises the cities of Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo, as well as the Townships of North Dumfries, Wellesley, Wilmot and Woolwich, is a unique blend of urban and rural located just one hour west of Toronto, and essentially a university zone and a techy hot-spot. What do you have when you mix in some fun-loving students with upscale professional techies? Answer - you end up with hip, trendy & fun.

Waterloo boasts a thriving and wonderfully vibrant urban uptown area with fabulous restaurants, intimate cafes, quirky pubs, energetic nightclubs, and a lively public square where there is always something happening. There is a host of inspiring musical entertainment available on a nightly basis, highlighting the exceptional talents of local musicians, singers and songwriters, as well as artists who have a place on the global stage. Whether you like rock, folk, blues, jazz or country, you're guaranteed to get into the groove, and maybe even get a sneak peek at some rising stars.

There are coffee bars, wine bars and whiskey bars, state of the art bowling parlours and unique board game guilds, sophisticated jazz clubs and pulsating dance clubs, theatre and concerts, and fine dining and comfortable pubs. In short, there is always some fun happening to suit every taste. Or, you can be like me, head

uptown and try to do it all!

First There Is CoffeeA coffee bar is the best place to kick off a day of fun, to sit back and relax and plan your nightlife strategy, or perhaps to recover from the night of fun that went before. Death Valley’s Little Brother in uptown Waterloo makes the most whimsical experience out of this morning necessity, and has become a favourite haunt for locals. Settle into the eclectic décor and sip on some of the best lattes, cappuccinos and expressos around – complete with a talented barista’s artistic touch. If you prefer something stronger you can return in the early evening to delve into their large selection of whiskey offerings, the perfect way to kick off the night. Test the single malt, and then ask your server for the story of the rare Jackalope, a cross between an extinct pygmy-deer and a species of killer-rabbit, and one of the rarest animals in the world. Heck, sample enough drams and you might even see one.

Monigram coffee can be found in historic Cambridge’s main downtown square, surrounded by antique shops, pubs, church spires and beautiful stone bridges that cross the Grand River. The bustling coffee bar occupies a red brick heritage warehouse – that was once a grain and feed foundry, a police precinct, a dry cleaning shop and a tattoo parlour. Owners Monica and Graham Braun, (aha - Monigram!), rescued the building three years ago, and renovated it into the beautiful gathering place it is today; quaint and cozy, with pastries or wholesome soup and fresh baked bread for lunch, with good coffee roasted on the spot. Graham, smartly dressed in plaid pants and red vest, serves the lattes on a tray, discourses with passion on the subject of coffee, and proudly shows off his coffee roaster that has produced an estimated 23,000 lbs. of beans since they opened. Snakes and Ladders, card games, crib and backgammon are available for guests to play while sipping on their rich, silky brew and a variety of live entertainment and events are offered throughout the week such as a story teller’s night, knitting, scotch tastings, backlot song writer evenings, and junior ballet for kids. “Coffee makes you smarter,” Monica points out. I order a second cup.

All Fun and GamesIf you plan a little wholesome exercise to kick off the evening, try tossing a few balls at Bingemans Kingpin Bowlounge, the biggest bowling venue in the Waterloo Region. Bingemans is a family favourite, with 28 state-of-the-art ten pin lanes. If you have a birthday to celebrate, a special event or a corporate get-together, Kingpin offers a special section for private parties. The high-tech, modern lanes come complete with cozy couches where you can sit back and relax while awaiting your turn.

The effortless computerized scoring eliminates the need for any mathematical prowess, and the giant projection screens add to the entertainment, or embarrassment, depending on the state of your game. Oh well, grab some nibbles and beer at the on-site Boston Pizza and just have fun. Aside from the upscale bowling, Kingpin Bowlounge also features a Playdium Game Centre and the largest outdoor patio in the Waterloo region. For a different kind of gaming fun, head uptown to The Adventurer’s Guild, an eclectic club that claims to stock precisely one metric fun-load of games, (approximately 700), including board games, retro video games, and role-playing games. Owners Kate Cox and Ryan Leandris offer everything from the Game of Thrones and Dungeons and Dragons, to Hungry Hippo and Donkey Kong, as well as craft beer, cider, mead, coffee and tea if you work up a thirst. There are gaming tournaments, special kid and tudent days, lone wolf nights for single players needing playmates, and even a secret guild handshake that Ryan

refused to show me until I paid the $50 six month official membership pass, ($5 for a adventurer’s day pass - $2.50 if under 12). It is the perfect amiable gathering place for geeks, (“We have more geeks per capita than anywhere else in Canada,” brags Leandris), students and for the techy crowd in the region.

Catch a ShowAnother way to approach the night is by taking in a movie at one of the region’s trendy cinemas, or by catching a live production at one of the intimate playhouses in the area. The Apollo Theatre is downtown Kitchener's only independent and licensed cinema, serving local craft beer, wine and cider. During Apollo Feast Nights, the Apollo offers audiences an unparalleled cinematic experience by combining exemplary film programming with a table side food & beverage service.

The Princess Cinema and the Princess Twin are located

in Uptown Waterloo, and feature movies you wouldn't

find at the larger cinemas. The original Princess Cinema

opened in 1985 on the second floor of an historic 19th

century brewery building behind the Huether Hotel. The

177 seat cinema features comfortable high-back chairs

and a truly funky, independent vibe by maintaining

"calendar art-house" programming, for the best in

international, independent and Canadian cinema,

as well as festival hits, documentaries, mini-festivals,

Hollywood classics, cult films and a Live on Stage

concert series. In 2005 a nearby two-story furniture

house was converted into a second twin cinema with

stadium seating. The Princess Twin screens new movies

every week, a mix of independent and mainstream

cinema.

For family-oriented professional live theatre, the Dunfield

Theatre overlooks the Grand River in Cambridge. The

500-seat playhouse, clad in beechwood and split-face

grey concrete block, is owned by the city and leased

to Drayton Entertainment. The City of Cambridge

has aspired to raise its cultural profile

and the Dunfield is its flagship, housing

administration offices, production and

performance space, and short-stay

residences for actors.

Live theatre is also available at St. Jacobs

Country Playhouse, located at the northern

edge of Waterloo Region in the heart of

St. Jacobs’ Market District, and in an 1867

renovated village schoolhouse called

St. Jacobs Schoolhouse Theatre. This

theatre has only 100 seats and remarkable

acoustics. The intimate atmosphere lends

itself to cabaret-style performances, where

you can enjoy a beverage at your table

positioned just a few feet from the stage. ...article continued page 48

Enjoy a BiteThe atmosphere of the Lancaster Smokehouse, or “Lanc,” as it is known by locals, is casual, with down-home comfort food. Owner and chef Chris Corrigan, who professes to being “a foodie before foodie was a word,” brings to the table a love for southern cuisine, and for the barbecue. The ribs, chicken, brisket and sausages are smoked on premises. Dishes are made from scratch in-house, including the sauces, dressings and even the mayonnaise. To accompany a sampler meat platter, try one of the region’s delectable craft brews. Head to the Lanc for live music each Friday night. “We have some great local talent. ” says Corrigan.

At the corner of King and Queen Streets, at the base of the historic Walper Hotel, is TWH Social, bringing a contemporary sophistication to downtown Kitchener, with great food and late night music in an upscale casual atmosphere. Or head to uptown Waterloo for cocktails at

the White Rabbit, a popular pub that caters to hip locals and curious travelers, an intimate room dedicated to apothecary-inspired concoctions and a fine-dining menu. Try a martini, or a single malt taster paddle. The White Rabbit is named after the first spirits house opened by Jack Daniels in Tennessee in 1892. You will find the staff friendly, the place is always rocking, with a little hip-hop by a DJ every Sunday evening.

For the best in beer selection and excellent food, may I suggest the Beertown Public House; there is one in both Cambridge and Waterloo. Try a Paddle Tour, a flight taster of the local craft beer offerings, and their gourmet burgers are excellent. Staying with the beer theme, head to Abe Erb, located in the heart of uptown Waterloo. Named after the founder of Waterloo, Abraham Erb, this happening microbrewery is dedicated to craftsmanship, in its combination of premium craft ales, great food and live entertainment.

An Easy Start to the EveningLocated just west of the Grand River in the quaint village of Blair, the Easy Pour Wine Bar is the place to taste, explore and enjoy a relaxing wine experience, whether you are an avid wine connoisseur or a novice taster. The heritage designated property, built in 1856, radiates warmth and charm in its rustic surroundings.

Take a walk up the "Crooked Stairs" and seat yourself in a comfortable lounge chair. Utilizing locally grown produce and the freshest ingredients, the wine bar’s innovative Chef creates the perfect compliments to enhance your wine experience. Target Tuesday nights for some live entertainment.

The Jazz Room, operated by the Grand River Jazz Society, is located in uptown Waterloo, nestled on street level in the historic Huether Hotel. Its ambiance is wonderful; intimate, cozy and laid back. You can really feel the connection with the performers. The club is hopping for the Friday (local talent) and Saturday night (international circuit) performances. Grand River Jazz has a dual mandate—to support exceptional local musicians and to invite talent from elsewhere for local audiences to hear. They have also tried to change the over-forty audience demographic by offering half price tickets to those under 30. “We have seen a 20 percent increase in our younger membership,” says society chair, John Lord. Tonight we are entertained by the talented Ted Gibbons Band, a Jazz Room regular. “We love this venue,” states Gibbons. “It is superior to anything they have in Toronto or New York.” What could be better than sipping on a glass of red wine in this friendly environment, while tapping your feet to the sultry rhythm of jazz?

Dancing the Night AwayAfter the Jazz Room, head across the street to further your nightlife education at Night School, a vibrant nightclub. I am told that there used to be a tunnel from the Huether Hotel under the street to the club, to bootleg whiskey during prohibition, but I can’t find the shortcut. So, when the jazz shuts down for the night, I follow the sound of nearby music. Tucked in behind

Night School is the alternative dance club called The Order. These disco-techs are the antithesis of the jazz room – full of energy, pulsating dance music, light displays, and a notably younger clientele – night school age!You name it - music, theatre, dance - it's all here! Choose your place and set the pace - share stories and beers on a patio, cocktails in a classy lounge, or get your groove on to a DJ in a club. The Waterloo Region comes alive each and every evening with the hustle and bustle of patrons excited to see live theatre, tap their foot to some jazz, take the family to see a movie at an historic theatre, play some games, hit some pins, sample the delicacies of the trendy restaurants and cafés, visit a wine, whiskey or coffee bar, take in the latest and greatest in local live music at one of the hip pubs, or dance the night away.

If you liked the Waterloo Region in the day, you’re in for a whole new experience at night!

Calling All Food iesWaterloo Region is possessed

of an embarrassment of riches when it comes to restaurants and

food experiences. With nearly half-a-million population, the Region’s dining is diverse and represented by a world of cultures and cuisines, from Thai to Chinese to Portuguese to El Salvadoran to German and on to Turkish and African.

It is not possible to include all the restaurants that help define Waterloo Region’s food culture, but this overview captures a few of the venues that are representative and emblematic of this growing food and restaurant landscape.

Waterloo Region has retained an important proximity to its unique “sense-of-place” food history and personality – its terroir – which embraces local farmers and producers. For example, it is a rare food landscape where one can boast about eating a piece of apple strudel at the historic Walper Hotel, anchored at 1 King Street at Queen Street in downtown Kitchener, and within 15 minutes be standing in the St. Jacobs apple orchard where those apples grew. How’s that for local food?

Here is a short scan of what is on offer in each of Waterloo Region’s “boroughs” – acknowledging that many other sandwich shops, burger joints, cafes and an impressive array of international restaurants are located across the Region. Listed are some of the highlights only.

CENTRE CITY KITCHENER The central downtown of Kitchener blends upscale casual dining and take-out venues with international flavours. Top Canadian chef Jonathan Gushue has opened The Berlin on King Street, a nod to Kitchener’s historic past and its earlier name. Next door is the Walper’s TWH Social and across the street is a pub with a large craft-beer following, B@THEMUSEUM. Around the corner is the Grand Truck Saloon with its specialty cocktails and southern U.S. soul food.

To the north the “Duke Food Block” has Indian, Chinese,

burgers, Tex-Mex and wood-fired pizza. In the west end

is Gilt Restaurant and next door is a juice bar, a pho

restaurant, a Turkish restaurant and road house-type

bars. Kinkaku Izakaya, across from Kitchener City Hall, is

perhaps the best sushi in the Region.

Scattered throughout the downtown are Thai-Vietnamese,

Ethiopian, Caribbean and vegetarian restaurants. With

several venues serving the El Salvadoran national street

food – corn-flour pancakes griddle-fried plain or stuffed

with beans, cheese or pork – Kitchener is a hot bed for

the pupusa.

The Kitchener Market, one of the best and oldest farmers’ markets in Waterloo Region, has fresh local food downstairs and restaurant stalls upstairs serving a wide range of food from Mexican to Germanic to Caribbean.

KINGSDALELocated in the area of Weber Street East and Fairway Road, this neighbourhood is home to the Charcoal Steak House (celebrating 60 years). Downstairs the newly refurbished Del’s Enoteca has upped the ante on Italian-inspired food.

Up the street, Fork and Cork Grill boasts sharing plates menu items, and The Bent Elbow has perhaps the Region’s most extensive beer selection. Head to Manitou Drive for the best veal parmigiano “sangweech” in southwestern Ontario at Nostra Cucina.

UPTOWN WATERLOOUptown Waterloo has an old-school dim sum Chinese restaurant, Neapolitan thin-crust pizza, coffee houses, and there’s craft beer and eats at Abe Erb and Beertown. Uptown 21 sets the standard for inventive cooking drawing on local and seasonal ingredients; their funky and casual sister-restaurant is Taco Farm Co.

Similar inventiveness characterizes Red House on William Street. Jane Bond Café has music and vegetarian fare, while White Rabbit calls itself a “spirit house” claiming the largest back-bar in the Region. Death Valley’s Little Brother (“DVLB”) is a popular venue for excellent espresso, pour-over coffee and a range of whiskies. Vinyl spins in the evenings.

In its own small hub are The Bauer Kitchen, a vegetarian and juice-bar restaurant, and the busy Vincenzo’s Italian market which includes a grab-and-go tavola calda and pop-up lunches. Sabletine prepares French pastries and light lunches a few doors down.

Located in an older residential Waterloo neighbourhood on Roger Street, is Ambrosia Pastry Co., the Region’s premiere chocolatier and baker of the unique Breton laminated pastry the “kouign amann.”

KING AT UNIVERSITY Near Wilfrid Laurier University are ensconced old timey burgers at Frat Burger, shawarma in a couple spots, California burgers and gaming, some great chicken wings, a burrito joint and a poutinerie, to name a few. Bhima’s Warung is one of the most unique food experiences in the Region.

Just up King Street is another member of the Charcoal Group - Wildcraft. Casual dining restaurant offering a varied menu served either in the bar, dining room or, in warm temperatures on the outside deck. Great wine list – and interesting cellar featured in the design of the building.

BRIDGEPORT VILLAGEThe Bridgeport village is home to the Public Kitchen | Bar on Lancaster Avenue (good for tapas). Next door, it’s Kypreos for souvlaki, fried halloumi cheese and loukaniko sausage at breakfast. Hearty-meaty fare comes from Veslo Family Restaurant, and further along Lancaster is the wood-buring oven at City Café & Bakery for Montreal-style bagels and thin-crust pizzas. The Lancaster Smokehouse is a definitive barbecue joint with regular live blues.

THE BELMONT VILLAGEBelmont Village has become revitalized into a well-rounded food hub, at the centre of which is Janet Lynn’s Bistro for upscale casual dining. Nearby is the vibrant yet quaint Belmont Bistro. An old-school diner serves basic fare in the block, and you can also get bubble tea and a plate of Thai noodles at Thai Bistro. Raja Indian is on one corner, and Casa Rugantino serves comforting home-style Italian. Rawlicious is an alternative for “raw” food and the Culinary Studio has brown bag lunches and cooking classes. There’s even a combination bike shop and café: The Berlin Bicycle Café.

HIGHLAND-BELMONT NEIGHBOURHOODAn Afghani restaurant, Chopan Kabob, is hidden in a small plaza on Highland Road West: a humble family-run restaurant taking great pride in the food of their homeland. Next door is Kishki World Foods for a sweets counter, excellent Halal butcher and a fabulous range of Middle Eastern and African foods and breads in their grocery aisles. Highland Halal Shawarma is a popular take-away gem for shawarma and gyros in the Region. Around the corner is a Portuguese bakery, McMullan’s Canadian Pub and Pizzeria, while across the street is El Salvadoran and Ethiopian fare.

WORTH - THE - DRIVE DESTINATIONSWaterloo Region’s rich farmland is the setting for “Waterloo County Fare” at The Blue Moon, EJ’s at Baden, Kennedy’s and Angie’s Kitchen. For example, mere minutes from St. Jacobs, The Olde Heidelberg Restaurant and Tavern was an 1860 stagecoach stop. They serves Pennsylvania-Dutch dishes like rolled ribs, pigtails, smoked pork hocks, schnitzel and sauerkraut.

Wellesley’s Nith River Chop House has a ranch-like setting and uses local and seasonal ingredients – check out the Flintstones-sized bone-in ribeye steak to feed the table when it’s available.

If you are at St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market, visit the nearby village of St. Jacobs and Jacobs Grill and The Stone Crock. Save some room homemade pie – there’s plenty on offer.

A MOVABLE FEAST TOOWaterloo Region is also part of Ontario’s growing food-truck culture rolling out crab cakes, grilled cheese, Indian street food, crepes, pulled pork, arancini and lots more.

PIONEER TOWERThis neighbourhood just off Highway 401 was the original settlement for Pennsylvania Dutch settlers in Waterloo County in the early 1800s. The area includes local food experts at Borealis Grille, the Canadiana pub Moose Winooskis, Pioneer Barbeque, a pierogi house and Indian restaurants. There’s all-you-can-eat sushi, all-you-can-eat Chinese, a Viet-Thai place for pho soup and The Busy Locavore for locally sourced and freshly made eat-in and take-away meals.

CAMBRIDGEThe village of Hespeler has seen its downtown core in revitalization and that includes several new restaurants and food outlets. Hespeler Road, south of Highway 401, holds a long strip of businesses that includes a Hakka Chinese-Indian restaurant, Marcelo’s for rustic Italian, a Beertown pub for casual dining, the Blackshop! for continental fare, and With the Grain for Indian.

Heading into Galt, the beautiful Cambridge Mill offers fine dining overlooking the Grand River. Classic architecture is the back-drop for Elixir Bistro, El Rinconcito Mexicano, Holy Crepe!, and Red Basil for Thai. Café 13 features Ontario craft beer, and the urban coffee shop and eatery Melville Café is in the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. Minutes away are the Napa Grille and the Kiwi Gastropub serving brunches, lunches and shareable plates. Just off Franklin Boulevard is Little Louie’s Burger Joint and Soupery (as featured on Food Network’s “You Gotta Eat Here!”).

The hamlet of Blair, Ontario, is home to The Easy Pour Wine Bar for casual ambiance and live music, while two minutes away is Waterloo Region’s jewel of world-class fine dining: Langdon Hall.
