Free Delivery We will deliver free to a 300 miles radius of our ranch on all bulls $3000 and over at our convenience and co-operate with the buyer to get full delivery at a minimal cost. We may ask you to meet us at a hard surface road. Bulls may be returned to the ranch after the sale, and they will be cared for at no cost for 50 days. Our Super Bull Guarantee will apply. A fee of $3.00/hd/day will be charged after April 7th. Later delivery will be at the buyer’s expense. We encourage you to leave the bulls with us for 50 days so they can be semen tested and given a pre-breeding shot before delivery. Females should be removed immediately after the sale; however, we will care for them for a reasonable length of time. Transportation is the responsibility of the buyer. Conditions The cattle will be sold singly or in pairs or groups to suit the buyers. The auctioneer will settle disputes as to bids by declaring all bids off and reselling the animal in question. Bar JZ Ranches reserves the right to reject any bid.

Catalog Material Special care has been taken to insure accuracy in the matter of EPDs, pedigrees, and other information included in this catalog. Any corrections will be announced on sale day. Bar JZ will not be responsible for catalog errors. Most of the bulls have been DNA tested for the homozygous polled trait. The test is highly accurate but is not a guarantee.

Health of the Cattle The cattle have been calfhood vaccinated for 7-way clostridium, IBR, BVD, PI3, BRSV, haemophilus, pasteurella and dewormed with injectible ivermection. All females have been Bangs vaccinated. Bred females have had two shots of Guardian scour protection. Bulls will receive a pre-breeding shot in April. Health papers will be available. International health papers will be at the buyer’s expense.

Guarantee This guarantee is designed to take the risk of buying a better bull. All bulls are guaranteed breeders for the first breeding season. If a bull should prove otherwise, satisfactory replacement or refund will be made. In addition, all Bar JZ bulls are guaranteed for the first breeding season against accidents, death or dissatisfaction for any reason. We reserve the right to require a bull be returned to Bar JZ Ranches at the buyer’s expense, before any exchanges or price adjustments are made. Registration papers must be returned if the bull is registered. We will give you an adjustment that can be used to purchase another bull, of 75% of the purchase price minus the weight at date of purchase, times $1.25 per pound. For example, if you buy a 1000 pound bull for $4000, and he dies during the first breeding season, he will be adjusted as follows:

If the bull did not die, but could be sold, the buyer would also have the market value to apply to a new bull. Minimum exchange price will be $1000. To qualify for adjustment, we must be notified of intent to have the bull adjusted and allowed to examine said bull. In case of death, buyer must furnish proof to our satisfaction. Bred heifers are guaranteed safe with calf. Open heifers sell without guarantee.

We at Bar JZ are pleased to introduce to you our 65th annual sale offering. It’s been amazing how

fast the years have gone by. There have been large changes in conformation and the tools we use to

evaluate our breeding stock. Today we are offering cattle that are functional, mainstream cattle that

are not too extreme in any of their traits.

This year we have tested all bulls, Hereford, Limousin and LimFlex, that have a possibility of being

homozygous polled. Homozygous polled bulls will sire all polled calves, even when mated to horned

cows. In addition the Limousin and LimFlex bulls that have two black parents have been DNA tested

for the homozygous black trait.

Our bred females have been ultrasound tested for calving date and calf sex by Dr. Eric Knock of

Prairie View Veterinary Clinic.

Once again this year we will be delivering bulls in April after they have passed a semen test,

breeding soundness test, and have received a pre-breeding vaccination. We find delivering bulls to

be a pleasurable part of the purebred business as we get to meet and know you better.

Last year we had many buyers using DVAuction. In some cases the bids were delayed and came in

too late. You can avoid this by calling us ahead of time. We will have someone on the phone with you

to take your bid when the animal you want is selling.

Understanding Horned/Polled and Scurred TraitsIt seems as time moves ahead we’ve see more demand for Hereford genetics in commercial cow herds. Along with that, there have been many questions on the differences among homozygous polled (PP), heterozygous polled (Pp), homozygous horned (pp) and scurred animals within the Hereford breed. Let’s take a look at these differences.

The horned/polled traitScurred cattle are classified as polled since they do have a polled gene, and only polled animals can express the scurred trait. To understand the inheritance of the scurred trait, it is important to understand the genetics involved in how the horned/polled trait is inherited. Five keys to understanding include:

1) Polled is dominant to horned, so those animals that carry one gene for polled (PP) and one for horned (Pp) will be polled.

2) All offspring that are bred to a PP sire and a PP dam will be PP.

3) When a PP bull is bred to a Pp female, resulting offspring will be one-half PP and the other half will be Pp.

smooth polled bull (ss), all of the heterozygous polled bull calves should be scurred. More importantly, the bull calves produced from this mating that are not scurred should be PP.

2) All of the females produced in this example would be smooth polled but would carry one dominant gene for the scurred trait and all calves of both sexes would either be smooth polled or scurred/polled because they would all receive a dominant gene for polled from the bull.

3) If a heterozygous scurred female is bred to a heterozygous scurred bull, all homozygous polled calves will not have scurs. All homozygous horned calves will not have scurs. The only scurred female will be heterozygous for the horned/polled trait and homozygous for scurs.Here are some key points to remember:

• Breeders interested in polled cattle can ignore the scur trait except that it is an indicator that the animal is heterozygous for the horned/polled gene.

• Only cattle heterozygous for the polled trait (Pp) will express scurs.

4) When a Pp bull is bred to a Pp female, resulting offspring will be one-quarter PP, one-half Pp and one-quarter pp.

5) When a Pp bull is bred to a pp female, resulting offspring are one-half Pp and one-half pp.

Understanding scursSome polled cattle have scurs, which are incompletely developed horns that are usually attached to the skin and can be scab-like or can resemble horns. Having scurs is why the phenotypic condition is sometimes hard to identify. Scurs are also genetic but different from the polled gene, and in bulls the gene for scurs is dominant. So, if a bull has scurs, he can be either heterozygous (Ss) or homozygous (SS), and if a female has scurs, she must be homozygous (SS). Cows that are Ss will be smooth polled. Scurs can only be seen in polled cattle because horned cattle hide the scurred gene. Here are some mating examples:

1) If you have a scurred cow (Pp for the horned/polled gene and SS for the scurred gene) and she is mated to a PP

• There is a test available for horned/polled in the Hereford breed. Visit the Hereford.org “Education Center” for more information.

• The scurred gene is sex linked and is dominant in bulls and recessive in females.

DNA Testing. The Hereford sale bulls have had the full DNA package which includes individual profile, parentage verification, abnormality testing, GE-EPDs, and horned/polled (unless the bull was scurred). This symbol by an animal’s pedigree signifies that EPDs have been genomically enhanced. This procedure uses the animal’s DNA to enhance the accuracy of their EPD values. “If you were to pull tail hair on a day-old calf and submit that hair for genomic testing, the resulting GE-EPDs would have the same accuracy as if you waited for him to mature, bred him to five cows and weighed and ultrasounded the resulting five calves as they got older.” Stephen Scott, CHA Executive Director

Udder Quality EPDs At Bar JZ we have been scoring the udder suspension and teat size of our cows at calving time since 2009. Higher numbers for the EPDs indicate smaller teats and tighter suspension, as measured in units of udder score. Units of udder score range from 1-9, with 9 being very small teats and very tight suspension. So, if “bull A” has a 1.5 TEAT EPD and his daughters average 8.5 teat score, and “bull B” has a 1.0 TEAT EPD we would expect “bull B’s” daughters to average an 8 teat score when “bull B” is mated to the same cows as “bull A”. Natural and NHTC cattle can be priced using one of the following two options. Once an option has been selected, between selling cattle live or in the beef, that option will remain in place for that producer throughout the year on additional lots of cattle.

A: Live-basis - Cattle will be sold using the Nebraska live weighted average. Cattle will be weighed, picked up in the afternoon, with a 5 percent shrink. Tyson will pay the first 300 miles of freight.

B: Dressed (carcass) weight - Cattle will be sold using the Nebraska weighted average, dressed steer price with the feed yard paying the freight.

Premiums

Premiums for cattle committed to various programs can change. Once cattle are committed to Tyson by the feed yard, the premium will not change. Individuals wanting to commit cattle into the programs should contact NALF to get current premium quotes or check with Tyson procurement for cattle to be shipped under the NALF/Tyson agreement. All cattle will need to carry the Lim-Choice ear tag or a tag that is program compliant to qualify for premiums through the NALF/Tyson program. Correct paperwork must accompany cattle with shipment or premiums will be forfeited.

The branded premium natural programs with Tyson and the conventional Lim-Choice grid are programs that depend heavily on high quality- and superior yield-grading cattle. Cattle that achieve both of these requirements while still adding more pounds in the production phases of the cow-calf and feeding operations, as well as the packing industry, are desired heavily at all phases in the production chain and ultimately to the consumer. Markets and consumer trends are changing and will continue to evolve.

There is a generation of Millennials that will be a major force in the market place. A considerable percentage of this consumer base will desire natural beef as a preferred choice, and will pay a premium for various natural beef products. Natural beef production comes at a cost to the producer when protocols are followed in the production phases of the beef industry. This requires superior genetics that affect performance and carcass quality.

While there will continue to be a high demand for conventionally produced beef throughout the United States, there is a wonderful opportunity to capture and offer the choice of a high quality natural beef product to consumers. Superior genetics will be required of cattle going into these programs in terms of both feeding performance and overall carcass quality in order not to erode the premium that is paid for the cost of natural beef production.

Commercial cow-calf operators looking to make feeder cattle that will qualify for these programs in an effort to increase their sale value, along with capitalizing on increased weaning and yearling weights at time of sale, should contact NALF for a listing of various Limousin and Lim-Flex seedstock providers in their area. Current Limousin breeders wishing to provide more information to their commercial bull buyers should also contact NALF for assistance in getting their feeder cattle qualified for these programs.

Vertical program expands value of Limousin geneticsVertical cooperation between segments of the beef business has proven its value to every participant in the production chain—cow-calf producer, feedyard and packer. And that value can be significant, not just in dollars and cents, but in the information that flows between segments that ultimately benefits everyone—especially the consumer.

To that end, the North American Limousin Foundation (NALF) has aligned with Tyson Fresh Meats to offer commercial cattle producers and cattle feeders the ability to market cattle through existing branded programs that Tyson is currently marketing today. Producers can elect to market cattle into one of two natural cattle feeding programs, NHTC (non-hormone treated cattle), or utilize the Lim-Choice conventional fed cattle grid with Tyson.

Premiums for qualifying cattle under the NALF/Tyson procurement agreement for these programs are substantial depending on the program and the time of year the cattle are marketed for harvest. Commercial cow-calf producers will be able to increase the value of their feeder cattle by purchasing Limousin and Lim-Flex bulls to use on their Angus or Red Angus based cow herds, and marketing the resulting progeny though these programs.

NALF already has members that are currently feeding a substantial number of cattle successfully into these programs on an annual basis with Tyson. NALF’s goal is to qualify more Limousin-Angus cross feeder cattle that are eligible for these premium programs by identifying commercial operations that incorporate Limousin genetics into their breeding programs.

Tyson firmly believes in the heterosis advantages the Limousin breed provides when crossed with Angus. NALF will also be looking to identify and qualify additional feed yards that want to participate in these programs.

These programs will give Limousin seedstock producers the ability to attract more commercial buyers to utilize their genetics, particularly into natural programs where the heterosis advantages of using Limousin bulls crossed into straight Angus and Red Angus cows become apparent. This cross will ultimately capitalize on advantages in yield grade, feed efficiency, and increased cutability, while still being able to hit the Choice quality grade. The advantages gained by using Limousin genetics in this terminal cross will be valuable to the producer, feed yard, and packer, where the effect or implants and beta agonists are negated and the cattle have to solely rely on their genetic merit.

NALF/Tyson program options

The ability to market cattle into one of these programs can be accessible by calling NALF to get your ranch or feed yard qualified for one of the specific programs. A summary of the marketing options available the NALF/Tyson program is listed below.

Open Prairie Natural Angus (Global Animal Partnership, GAP) - Naturally raised and produced cattle that receive no antibiotics, hormones, beta agonists, or sulfa drugs. Producer and feedlot must go through the GAP certification process with third party verification. Cattle must qualify on Tyson’s Open Prairie Natural Angus Genotype certification form, which requires parentage identification (Black Angus or Red Angus). NALF will require the use of Limousin genetics on the other half of the pedigree. Cattle must also be age and source verified which requires third party verification from a USDA approved PVP (Process Verified Program) company like IMI Global. Additional requirements of the GAP certification must be fully met, which means cattle must be raised and produced meeting defined animal welfare requirements in addition to defined humane handling practices. Cattle will be shipped to Lexington, Neb., for harvest.

Open Prairie Natural Angus (Non-GAP) - These cattle must meet all the requirements of option one, with the exception that they are not GAP qualified. Cattle must be approved through Tyson’s natural affidavit with protocols met at all production levels. Cattle must be age and source verified. Cattle will be shipped to Lexington, Neb., for harvest.
