[1] The data in the table is based upon a random 1 percent sample of recipients of Form 1099-MISC. The data have not been cleaned or edited by the Internal Revenue Service.

[2] Some observations have very large values of non-employee compensation. These high values might be due to errors in coding or transcription errors.

Capping at the 99.95 percentile shows the importance these observations have on the average and total.

[1] The data in the table is based upon a random 1 percent sample of recipients of Form 1099-MISC. The data have not been cleaned or edited by the Internal Revenue Service.

The data in the table may not represent the distribution of counts and dollars by the tax filing entity. The recipients in this table are determined by Employer Identification

Number (EIN). Some consolidated tax filing entities may use multiple EINs.

[2] Some observations have very large values of non-employee compensation. These high values might be due to errors in coding or transcription errors.

Capping at the 99.95 percentile shows the importance these observations have on the average and total.

Table 3: Counts of Individuals Receiving Non-Employee Compensation (1099-MISC, Box 7) and

the Number of Form 1040 Tax Returns Filed [1]

    [Counts in 000s]

[1] The counts of individuals receiving non-employee compensation (1099-MISC, box 7) and the

number of Form 1040s filed are not directly comparable for a number of reasons.

First, both members of a married couple could receive a form 1099-MISC. Second, some 1099-

MISC recipients may not be filing a Form 1040. Finally, some taxpayers may ' receive a Form

1099-MISC using their businesses' EIN as opposed to their SSN.

[2] The 1099-MISC data is based upon a random 1 percent sample of recipients of Form 1099-

MISC. The data have not been cleaned or edited by the Internal Revenue Service.
