AROUND THE DIAMOND IN THE ABL WEEK 10 7/31/15 BIG STORY: The trade deadline just passed on Wednesday night and once again everyone was wondering will another big deal be made. Three trades were made on deadline deal and all three involved the Tallahassee Terriers. Usually the Terriers are adding a big piece for a playoff run like they did in 2013 when they picked up gun slinger Justin Verlander. Last year it was Manahawkin picking up Matt Carpenter for the stretch run as the Terriers might have been one of the aggressive “sellers” in recent times. On the diamond it was a play week ruled by huge sweeps by Titusville, La Jolla, and Chesapeake Bay as the Cats kept pace with the ABL’s best Perfectos in the National Division race. The Juggernaut bounced back after getting swept from Ocracoke the previous play week to sweep past the struggling Gangstas by a combined 14-5 count. A great race is brewing in the American Division and National Division with a log jam for post season play. The action is heating up as all six playoff spots still remain with everyone trying to capture them as we head into the four game sets known as Summer Slam with teams having ten games left on the regular season slate. 2015 ABL STANDINGS NATIONAL W L GB PCT RS RA AWAY HOME DIV VS AD Titusville 15 7 -- .682 102 63 6-4 9-3 9-5 6-2 Chesapeake Bay 12 10 3 .545 109 94 5-5 7-5 8-4 4-6 Mudville 11 11 4 .500 89 95 7-7 4-4 7-7 4-4 Tallahassee 10 12 5 .455 92 103 3-9 7-3 6-6 4-6 Ocracoke 9 13 6 .409 82 103 6-6 3-7 2-10 7-3 AMERICAN W L GB PCT RS RA AWAY HOME DIV VS ND Manahawkin 13 9 -- .591 98 70 4-6 9-3 11-3 2-6 Long Beach 12 10 1 .545 93 78 5-5 7-5 6-6 6-4 Syracuse 12 10 1 .545 101 96 6-4 6-6 6-6 6-4 La Jolla 11 11 2 .500 98 88 7-5 4-6 7-7 4-4 Chicago 5 17 8 .227 71 145 1-9 4-8 3-11 2-6 X-PLAYOFF SPOT Y-DIVISION Z- TIED FOR PLAYOFF SPOT, ONE GAME SHOWDOWNS DEADLINES: Play Week begins July 31st

SKIBBY’S SPOTLIGHT:

Skibby’s Spotlight – Another One Comes, Another Goes

Here we are rapidly approaching summer slam. The trade deadline as of now has since past, with

Chicago unloading early and in a surprising turn of events the Legend unloading players right until he

wasn’t allowed to anymore. At least one player went through one seller and through the other before

reaching their final destination. Can’t predict baseball of course.

Page 5: 2015 ABL STANDINGS · AROUND THE DIAMOND IN THE ABL WEEK 10 7/31/15 BIG STORY: The trade deadline just passed on Wednesday night and once again everyone was wondering will another

What I’m Listening To – Currently listening to the Royals @ Blue Jays games. Because in the last week

these two teams just got a whole lot more interesting!

Recent MLB News – Trade Deadline Edition

• Someone got traded to a place, for some other someone(s), and teams where happy.

• Cole Hamels decided he really wanted out of Philly, so he no hit the Cubs.

• Rumor has it the Dodgers are getting Wood (giggity) and a Johnson (giggity).

• Social media made Wilmer cry.

• Troy Tulowitzki needs to learn to speak Canadian.

• Clayton Kershaw was scratched from a start due to a pain in his ass.

• Mike Morse pinch hit for a team he was traded from.

• The Yankees are potentially screwed. But Dustin Ackley will fix it!

With all the player movement, I’m not even going to try and keep up with this typical crazy trade

deadline nonsense.

Some Rookie Notes – I know it’s been a while since I’ve mentioned any rookies, but thanks to the

Legend, I got some solid inside info on what some of the rookies have been doing this year.

• Wilmer Flores – 3rd overall in batting average with a .362 average that leads all rookies. Throw

in a few home runs and 14 RBIs and that he’s contributing to a first place team this season and

that’s a good showing!

• Danny Santana – Recently traded but still batting .360 and leads the league in stolen bases. Also

in the top 8 in runs scored with 16.

• Starlin Castro – Batting a solid .272 with 8 doubles and 11 runs and 11 RBI as he bounces around

the LBI lineup.

• Mike Trout – Bringing his average up to .275 on the year (was .230 at the break) and has 7

bombs, 16 RBI, and 19 runs scored for the expansion Mudville Nine.

• Yasiel Puig – He’s only hitting .343 with 5 doubles, 2 triples, 2 bombs, 10 runs, and 9 RBI. Jack of

all trades that will help the JUGGERNAUT once he’s done healing his injuries.

Can The MVP Come From A Last Place Team – That is a question we may have to answer this year.

Chicago Gangsta Chris Carter is leading the ABL with 12 bombs and 26 RBI along with hitting .301 on the

season. He also has 80% of the GW RBI for the Gangstas. I’m sure he’ll get some award consideration in

the offseason at this rate because who’d have thought this is what would happen?

Page 6: 2015 ABL STANDINGS · AROUND THE DIAMOND IN THE ABL WEEK 10 7/31/15 BIG STORY: The trade deadline just passed on Wednesday night and once again everyone was wondering will another

Team Notes – Because Baseball is a Team Sport

• Titusville has 8 players with 3 or more home runs. In contrast the Pelicans have 8 home runs.

• Mudville has still yet to get swept. Or sweep anyone. Honestly I’m rooting for the perfect split

season. One way or another in the playoffs….

• Tallahassee had the 4th best team average but injuries sent them to the trade market as sellers

for the first time.

• Gangstas pitching staff has almost allowed more than twice as many runs (145) as the offense

has scored (71).

• Manahawkin leads the league in OBP (.344) and has a nearly identical slugging % (.349).

• Tallahassee leads the league in stolen bases with 13. Last year’s steals leader was Jacoby

Ellsbury with 13 steals. Buck will not be proud.

• Is there a new King of the Complete Game? The Juggernaut pace the league with 7. Suppose

that’s easier to do when your 1-2 punch is Kershaw and Cueto.

• The only two teams with ERAs under 3.00 are your 7th and tied for 8th teams in strikeouts.

Maybe strikeouts are overrated?

• Is Craig Biggio a bench coach in Ocracoke, as they lead the league in HBP with 17.

What’s Coming Up – Well, Saturday I travel to NYC to see the Mets face the Nationals, hopefully

welcome some new players, console Wilmer Flores, and watch deGrom deGrominate the Nationals. Oh,

and heckle Bryce Harper. He’s the new Chipper Jones. Then it’s home for some Sunday morning ABL

action as we are at Summer Slam this week.

Hope all is well in everyone’s world as the season winds down and with these divisional races looks to

have an amazing finish.

FUTURE ABL MANAGERS: Reminder to all managers that if you find someone interested in baseball let’s get them started in the ABL Developmental Plan playing practice games. Contact the Commish for a sample set of cards/charts and start teaching the ABL’s next Billy Martin the excitement of tabletop baseball. ABL Developmental Plan Guidelines: At a minimum new perspective managers must complete the following:

1. Two practice games with an ABL Manager with score sheets. 2. One practice game with an ABL Manager on the dice roller. 3. Total of three practice games must be completed with ABL Managers. 4. Then the new perspective manager should request an ABL Expansion Application. 5. Finally the new perspective manager should pay the $60 operational fee once their ABL

Expansion Application is approved.

Tulo and Stanton go deep in typical close thriller between rivals Game # 1 Cashner vs. Hughes Cats strike first I the bottom of the first on a Tulo 3 run shot. Terriers pull within a run on two RBI singles from Cano and Chavez. Tallahassee catcher Ramos was pitched hit for in the top of the 4th and the replacement Bryan Pena took a shot to the nuts in the bottom of the inning forcing Brandon Belt into catcher duty. Terriers tied the game in the 6th on a Rbi ground out to score Beltre. Cats took the lead back in the bottom of the 6th inning on a Turner RBI single after an Eaton single and easy steal with Belt catching. Stanton then went deep with a 2 run jack to make it 6-3. Terriers kept coming with a run in the 7th and a run in the 8th to pull within a run. Kimbrel worked around a two out single to preserve the victory for the Cats. R H E LOB

Cats pick up a run on a Lucroy RBI double that chases the tired Lynn. Cats added a run in the 3rd on a Stanton RBI double for a 2-0 lead. Cats made it 5-0 in the 6th as Seth Smith went deep for a two run shot and deGrom helped his cause with an Rbi single. deGrom was the story on the mound pitching into the 8th inning allowing only two singles through seven innings. As expected the Terriers made it a game with two in the 7th and forcing Kimbrel to pitch in the 9th for the save. R H E LOB

Manahawkin at Titusville

Game One Four Perfectos Homer en Route to Walk-Off Titusville 6 Manahawkin 5 The leaders of the ABL divisions met and played about as close as their identical 13-7 records would indicate. Game one was back-and-forth from the git-go. The Pelicans scored in five of their innings, but could put only one across each time. The Perfectos also scored in five of nine, mostly via the long ball: Gomez in the first, Machado in the fourth, Desmond in the fifth, and Encarnacion in the sixth. Desmond’s two-run shot was the only that wasn’t solo, but they all came off Manahawkin starter, John Lackey. Trailing 4-2 after five, the Pelicans scored singletons in the fifth (Flores home run), sixth (Votto single), and seventh (Pedroia single) against the T-Ville bullpen to tie the game. Manahawkin threatened in the top of the ninth, with three singles, but Dyson was caught stealing to make the second out, which helped Fien to escape and preserve the tie. Machado led off the bottom of the ninth against Papelbon with a single off the Park Effects chart. After a fly-out, Zobrist stroked a double, and the 5-speed Machado raced to the plate and scored for the win. R H E LOB MAN 110 001 110 5 13 0 8 TV 100 121 001 6 9 1 2

Perez 1 Benoit 1.1 (LOSS) Game Two Pelicans Come Back to Tie Again, Perfectos Prevail Again Titusville 5 Manahawkin 4 The starters had control early. Zimmerman had 12 strikeouts, struck out the Perfectos 1-2-3 in the third and the fifth, and had five straight Ks at one point. T-Ville’s Gallardo pitched five scoreless and gave up only two hits. It was another back-and-forth game. Arcia led off the second with a home run and gave Titusville an early 1-0 lead. The Pelicans immediately jumped on the first Titusville reliever and took a 2-1 lead in the sixth with back-to-back singles from Flores and Montero. The Perfectos tied it in the bottom of the frame with a Grandal single. Titusville went back on top 4-2 when a Carpenter error led to two unearned runs. Manahawkin tied it up again in the eighth with four singles and an untimely passed ball from Grandal. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Desmond hit his second round-tripper of the series and gave the Perfectos the lead again. Casilla worked around a two-out single in the ninth to notch the save and give Titusville the sweep. R H E LOB MAN 000 002 020 4 10 1 9 TV 010 001 21x 5 8 0 6

La Jolla at Chicago Game 1 Cueto Vs. Alvarez LJ comes out swinging in the top of the first! After getting the first 2 batter out to start the game Alvarez has a minor melt down that leads to 3 Runs as LJ would see RBI singles from Vanslyke , Uribe, and Ramirez. Bottom of the frame and Chi would recover 2 of those runs via a Rollins RBI single and a C.Carter RBI single. LJ would tack on another 2 in the top of the 3rd with a Rene "I'm So Pretty" Rivera 2 RBI single. Chi would get a run in the bottom of the 5th on a N.Cruz Solo HR. Then LJ would blow up for 4 runs in the to of the 7th... capped by a Vargas 2 run HR. Cueto would settle down and finish up the complete game 7 hitter. Final score LJ 9 Chi 3 Pitching

The offense didn't go completely quietly, highlighted by a 2-run home run from Josh Harrison, but it was not enough as the Hazard would only ever tie the game in the 7th and it would be immediately untied in the 8th by A-Gon's last shot. Garza's winning dreams were shattered when Adrian Gonzalez hit a game tying HR in the 6th, and a go ahead HR in the 8th. Cuse grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 4th when Miggy doubled and scored 2 batters later on a Cutch triple. A-Gon would tie it in the 6th, give the Fish the lead in the 8th and LBI would add an insurance run when ex-Hazard first baseman Paul Goldschmidt would single in Jose Bautista. A LOOK AHEAD IN THE ABL:

WEEK 11 SERIES PREVIEWS

Summer slam is upon us yet again! The dog days of summer are here and this play week we’ll

play 4. Last week showed that there’s something special going on in Titusville as they swept the AL

leading Pelicans. Ocracoke is still trying to push the issue of a playoff spot, but Mudville keeps splitting

each week. The ‘cats crushed the hopes and dreams of the Terriers as they dismantled their team

before the deadline for the first time ever.

Chesapeake Bay Channel Cats (12-10) vs. Titusville Perfectos (15-7) – C-Bay leads the series 20-18

Definitely the slam series to watch as the Perfectos will look to distance themselves from the 2nd place

Channel Cats and the ‘Cats look to make up some ground on the Perfectos. Both teams swept their

week 10 series as they keep marching through the schedule.

The ‘Cats force the Terriers into seller mode last week and tried hard to improve their team through

trades, and were moderately successful though didn’t get the ace that they had hoped to, though

Andrew Cashner will certainly help the rotation. Robby Cano will have to make up for the lack of run

prevention by cranking out some run production for the offense. The pair of Tulo and Stanton will

welcome the left handed protection in the lineup as V-Mart has disappointed this year as it seems he’s

practically sprinting away from the Mendoza line. The ‘Cats are stacked in the pen and in the lineup and

need that power pitching/power hitting combo they predicted draft day to start doing some consistent

damage as on occasion XBH have been hard to come by.

And damage is something that the Perfectos have been really, REALLY good at preventing. They had

some close games in week 10, winning by a run a piece. The first place Perfectos were in comparison to

some quiet as the Perfectos acquired a new catcher and then made some pick-ups off the free agent

pile. The Perfectos keep winning with their bullpen, as their only two qualified ERA pitchers are

Atchinson and Fien, and keep crushing home run balls, as they made not lead the league in average,

they definitely lead it in slugging percentage. 10 more home runs than any other team. This is a tough

team to face for two games, let alone that the four the ‘cats have to settle in for on Sunday.

This will be one of the more intriguing matchups this week as the ‘Cats look to make up some ground in

the standings.

Ocracoke Blackbeards (9-13) vs. Tallahassee Terriers (10-12) – Tallahassee leads the series 22-8

These two are heading on officially different paths, and maybe not the ones most expect. The

Blackbeards have gone all in, playing Trader Jack and trying everything to acquire talent to get back in

this year’s playoff race. A game ahead of them, but deciding to throw in the towel, the suddenly

struggling Terriers moved some players out of town and look towards a brighter 2016 season.

Truth be told I think the Blackbeards have probably turned over half their roster this season. They

started hot, and struggled, and since have been active on the free agent and trade markets, but buying

and not selling as some may have thought while they scuffled through the middle of the season. Yu

Darvish and Chris Tillman will likely make their Blackbeards debut this week and the turned over bullpen

has been successful so far. Dexter Fowler got out of Chitown and is now batting .500 with a pair of

doubles for the Blackbeards. Defense be damned if you can get a bit enough lead. This has been a

fascinating team and might show that you’re never really out of it if they can pull off this trick.

The Terriers however decided that 2015 wasn’t going to be their year and started moving players for jars

of butter chip pickles as the trade deadline approached on Wednesday. All told it was hard for the

Terriers to replace the offensive output of Brantley and Mesoraco as they tried to stay in the race and

manage the injuries of their core players. ARizzo gave it his best shot but just wasn’t meant to be. So

the Terriers can now focus on playing the role of spoiler and get to start by making life difficult for the

Blackbeards. The Terriers have owned the Blackbeards franchise historically and might have to spend

some time figuring out the lineup as he sold with an ‘everyone must go’ attitude.

The Terriers may have the better record now, but the Blackbeards have been gaining ground, going 3-1

over their last 4. It’s too late to sell off so the Blackbeards better keep winning!

Syracuse Hazard (12-10) vs. Manahawkin Pelicans (13-9) – Syracuse leads the series 17-7

Pelicans fans had a rough week 10 as they saw part of their lead evaporate, and the Hazard are looking

at the chance to pounce on the Pelicans and maybe get a piece of that division lead.

Page 21: 2015 ABL STANDINGS · AROUND THE DIAMOND IN THE ABL WEEK 10 7/31/15 BIG STORY: The trade deadline just passed on Wednesday night and once again everyone was wondering will another

The Hazard made some changes to improve their club defensively and offensively in recent weeks, and

time will tell if those moves are going to make a difference. Chase Headley will bring his SP defense to

third, and Lucas Duda looks to do some thumping for the Hazard. Some bullpen arms have been added

and the ever tinkering Hazard are looking to make some noise. Coming off a close series with the

Starfish, they head to face the Pelicans. The only AL team who pitches better than the ‘fish. Cutch is

dominating as would be expected but the rest of the lineup has been fairly average, outside all the

doubles they keep hitting, and there isn’t a symbol to stop those. Watch out for some big innings and

how the Pelicans will handle them.

The Pelicans are coming off some tough one run losses at the hands of the league dominating Perfectos.

They were also the quietest at the trade deadline, not making any moves to acquire a bat they may have

needed for the stretch run. They do get Starling Marte back from injury (and they don’t play LBI again so

he’s safe) which does strengthen the lineup. Wilmer, MyCarKeys, and a $500 vacuum cleaner pace the

offense and Joey Votto leads the league with TWENTY doubles (8 more than 2nd place trio of

Carpenter/Martin/Bautista) so they can get some guys on as they lead the league in OBP. They just

need a few more balls to fly over the fence. Bold prediction at the midway point said that the Pelicans

would hit more home runs at slam than they had all year. Maybe just maybe he’ll make it happen.

The Pelicans will look to hold off a tough opponent and show that not making a splash was the right

decision to make.

Chicago Gangstas (5-17) vs. Long Beach Island Starfish (12-10) – LBI leads series 24-22

The Gangstas will see a familiar face when they face the Starfish as they look to play the role of spoiler.

Chicago made the majority of their moves when trading opened and made some solid moves to prepare

for 2016. Chris Carter clearly wants to show off still as he’s mashing everything in sight, leading the ABL

in home runs (12) and RBIs (26) and continues to impress their manager. The problem for the Gangstas

is he has more than half of the total of the bombs for Gangstas still on the roster. He has been a bright

spot and Ant-Man took time out of his busy week with his movie debuting to talk to me a bit about his

surprise and how well he’s hit.

LBI comes in with some new bats and one of them is a familiar Gangsta face. Goldy hit pretty well in his

Starfish debut, and now they have to hope that the newest addition, Adrian Beltre, can help solidify the

offense to a more consistent level. His bat has been suspect so far, maybe the toxic fumes of Jersey will

rekindle some of that bat magic. Or maybe the boos from the Gangsta fans. Outside of the #5 starter

the Starfish starting pitching has been the story so far and likely will continue to be, along with the help

of Fiers and Giles in the bullpen.

Starfish fans need to temper their expectations as the Gangstas offense can put up some big numbers at

times if Carter can get them going.

La Jolla Juggernaut (11-11) vs. Mudville Nine (11-11) – Series tied at 1-1

Rookie managers, fighting for their playoff lives, facing off for a four game set and the only interleague

series of this slam.

Page 22: 2015 ABL STANDINGS · AROUND THE DIAMOND IN THE ABL WEEK 10 7/31/15 BIG STORY: The trade deadline just passed on Wednesday night and once again everyone was wondering will another

Some though La Jolla was toast with the injuries to Puig Destroyer and Matt Kemp but a sweep of the

tipsy Gangstas got them right back in the race. Having Puig and Kemp back helps, and the one two

punch of Cueto and Kershaw helps,

rules. Will that give the Nine an advantage? It may, but the Juggernaut have been on and off hot this

year and this may be the start of another hot streak. Hanley Ramirez has been putting

numbers (.371/.417/.584 slash line) and Puig and Crawford also both batting over .340. This is a tough

lineup to face and the Nine will have their hands full, but no DH for a pair of games for the Juggernaut.

Mudville keeps splitting series. I really just can’t get over this. Not sure I’ve seen anything like it. The

splits aside, Mudville has a similar issue and will be without Richards due to the 5 man rotation. The

Nine’s bullpen has been getting some action as their starting pitching h

and Kevin Jepsen lead the way and Tyler Skaggs has the best numbers of the rotation. Offensively Mike

Trout has started to pick up the pace with the acquisition of Michael Saunders and Trout now paces the

team in bombs, runs, RBI, and walks. Not too shabby for the three time defending AL MVP. Mudville

will need some of that mashing against the JUGGERNAUT as they look to stay in the playoff race and

hold off Ocracoke.
