The Spirit of the Entrepreneur Awards event, which recognizes the top business owners of the Inland Empire region, will again feature the presentation of a “Best of the Best” award.

Conceived in 2012 by event sponsor Best Best & Krieger LLP (BB&K) and the event’s presenter the Inland Empire Center for Entrepreneurship (IECE) at Cal State San Bernardino, the award is designed to recognize the “best” entrepreneur from among the 2013 award recipients. This year 27 finalists are competing to receive awards in nine (9) different categories.

“The Best of the Best will be the person from among the nine award recipients that best exemplifies what it means to be an entrepreneur,” said Glen Price, partner in BB&K’s Riverside office and an advisory board member of the Center for Entrepreneurship. “We evaluate each award recipient in terms of taking risks and building a successful enterprise that creates jobs and value where none existed before.”

The Best of the Best Award is presented at the conclusion of the Spirit of the Entrepreneur event, and is selected by a special group of judges that included past Spirit award recipients and a representative from BB&K.

“We are very excited to continue this unique feature of the Spirit Awards program,” said Mike Stull, director of the Inland Empire Center for Entrepreneurship and founder of the event. “It is a distinctive element that adds a nice summation to the awards presentations and is a tribute to the level of support and commitment that Best Best & Krieger is making to entrepreneurs in the Inland Empire.”

Best Best & Krieger, a full-service law firm with more than 200 attorneys in nine offices across California and in Washington, D.C., has been a sponsor of the Spirit of the Entrepreneur since 2008. The firm delivers effective, timely and service-oriented solutions to complex legal issues facing public agencies, businesses and individuals.

In an industry that has long been dominated by giant multinational corporations, Forrest Lucas has overcome the odds and used his sales ability, marketing savvy and core values of honesty and fairness to build an impressive industry leader: Lucas Oil Products, Inc. Not an astonishing feat for an eighty or ninety year old subsidiary of a multi-national oil/petroleum conglomerate, but a staggering tour-de-force for a fledgling company founded in 1989 by Indiana natives Forrest Lucas and his wife and partner Charlotte.

Today Lucas Oil Products is the world leader in the production of high performance lubricants and problem solving additives with 272 unique formulations marketed in more than forty countries around the globe. With the biggest variety of shelf products of any oil company, Lucas Oil is sold in more than 30,000 auto parts stores nationwide and at every truck stop across the USA.

While Lucas has always been an entrepreneur, starting as an owner-operator of a long haul truck and growing to establish a company with a fleet of trucks, Lucas Oil didn’t become a reality until the late 1980’s when maintenance costs were threatening to ruin him. But adversity is a great teacher, and Lucas refused to let the poor quality of available commercial truck lubricants force him out of business. So, in 1985, he set out to teach himself how to make better oils than he could buy off the shelf and set himself up as a home chemist. In his spare time he hunted through chemical junk yards taking a little of this

and a little of that and began mixing and matching his own lubricant formulas. Through experimentation he came up with a formulation that worked and Forrest began selling to his peers who were all suffering the same problems.

Forrest Lucas hasn’t looked back since. By the time he turned 50, he was completely out of the trucking business and fully into manufacturing and marketing his products. Headquartered in Corona, California the company grew steadily, and in 2003, expanded to a second manufacturing plant in Corydon, Indiana.

Not content to be a leader in lubricants and additives, Lucas Oil is now a leader in the motorsports industry through its Team Lucas sponsorships, nationwide racing series (such as the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing series) and racing venues in Missouri and California. The company is also heavily involved in television production, with its Lucas Oil Production Studios providing nearly 400 hours of programming to CBS, CBS Sports, NBC, NBC Sports and MAVTV. Lucas Oil purchased MAVTV in 2011 adding to its television reach and has grown the network to reach more than 68 million households.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary in July, 2014, Lucas Oil is an impressive success story having radically altered the oil products industry. Forrest Lucas has gone toe-to-toe with the multi-nationals and has made Lucas Oil Products, Inc. a clear winner and world leader in heavy duty and high performance lubricants.

Quick Factshe stArted eArLy. Lucas had his first taste of entrepreneurship at 9-years old, selling White Cloverine Salve door to door. At 21 he bought his first semi-truck and eventually built a successful long haul trucking company.

Being nice is A key to success. During his early days hauling loads for Mayflower Moving, Lucas met numerous high-level business executives and military officers and noticed that they all had one thing in common: they were nice to people and honest in their dealings. Lucas has applied that lesson to help build a well-respected company that treats it customers, suppliers and employees fairly and honestly.

LucAs oiL wAs Born of necessity. As Lucas notes, his fleet of trucks was breaking down frequently, adding to his cost of doing business. Convinced he could find a solution to decrease maintenance costs and keep his trucks on the road longer, Lucas started experiment with various oils until he came up with the “secret sauce” that is put into everything the company makes.

The Judging Process

The process includes several phases. First, all nominees are screened and evaluated by the Spirit of the Entrepreneur award staff to ensure that they meet the basic eligibility requirements.

All eligible nominees complete a comprehensive company profile that is then reviewed by the Executive Committee of the judging panel. The Executive Committee consists of three judges who review the company profiles and then

select up to 40 candidates as semi-finalists from the typical field of well over 100 candidates.

Next, the entire judging panel then reviews the profiles of the semi-finalists and meets with them at a special reception, allowing the judges to learn firsthand about the nominee’s background and their business.

Lastly, following the reception, the judges face the difficult task of narrowing the field down to up to 27 finalists and selecting

the ultimate award recipients. The judges base their decisions not only on financial success, but give equal weight to the nominee’s accomplishments, innovative approaches, and their entrepreneurial spirit.

While not an easy assignment, the 2014 Spirit of the Entrepreneur judging panel did a remarkable job in evaluating and selecting the top entrepreneurs of the Inland Empire business community!

In order to select the top entrepreneurial success stories of the Inland Empire, the Spirit Awards convenes an elite, independent judging panel of past Spirit Award recipients and local business leaders.

In January 2007 he took it upon himself to create the product he and many others needed (including diabetics) – sugar free ice cream – buying a commercial ice cream maker and experimenting with recipes he developed himself, often until 2 or 3 in the morning. Launched in 2006, the Garner Holt Student Fast Pitch Competition gives students at Cal State San Bernardino an opportunity to jump-start their entrepreneurial dreams by presenting their potential business venture to a panel of investors and entrepreneurs. Students selected for the competition make a 90-second fast pitches to a panel of investors and other members of Southern California’s entrepreneurial community. Each fast pitch is judged on the quality of the presentation and its investment potential.

The competition consists of three (3) phases:

1. At the start of the school year, students respond to an open call for application across the Cal State San Bernardino campus. All students are eligible to enter regardless of major or class level.

2. From the pool of applicants, a panel of faculty and local entrepreneurs select the 15 most promising business ventures to make their pitch in the semi-final event held in early November.

At the semi-final event, entrepreneurs and angel investors evaluate the pitches of each student and select the five (5) finalists.

3. The five (5) finalists make their final pitch to the audience at the Spirit of the Entrepreneur Awards. You get to vote on which one you thought was well-presented and represented a clear and sustainable business opportunity.

The competition is generously supported by Garner Holt, 2006 Spirit of the Entrepreneur Award recipient. Holt is an industry legend in theme park technology with clients all over the world, including Disney, Knott’s Berry Farm, Universal and Las Vegas casinos. His support has helped raise the profile of the program both on and off campus. “The fast pitch competition is a great event that encourages students to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams,” noted Holt. “I am delighted to lend my support to help take the event to the next level in terms of prestige and prize money for the students.”
