3CALLING & CAREER WEEK

Dear Montreat College students, faculty, staff, and guests,

Welcome to Calling and Career Week: A Symposium on Work and Vocation. In these pages, you will find many opportunities to explore a broad and deep Christian vision of Calling and Career. As a community we are blessed to have these few days together to think, learn, and be inspired. The symposium is designed to demonstrate a Christian vision of God’s call on our lives and to provide examples from the world of work that illuminate this call.

Why take the time to do this? Now more than ever, it is necessary for Christ-centered colleges like Montreat to produce graduates who are educated for responsible action, able to integrate faith with everyday lives, and equipped for the world of work and study. Graduates who are, to quote our mission statement, equipped to be “agents of transformation, renewal, and reconciliation.”

We are blessed with many faithful authors, thinkers, practitioners, alumni, and friends who have agreed to participate in this symposium. So we encourage you to make the most of this opportunity to learn from them. How? Pray that the Holy Spirit will inspire us to a vision of God’s call; pray for discernment and vision; pray that others will be inspired. Seek out answers to your questions. Connect with alumni, guests, faculty and staff. Celebrate what God is doing in the world.

Our goal (and our prayer) for these few days is that you will grow in a biblical understanding of calling and career, be inspired by the faithfulness of others, and identify practical steps toward work (and study) for God’s glory.

For Christ and His Kingdom,

Tom Oxenreider

Connecting Sunday to MondayTom Nelson, Senior Pastor at Christ Community Church, Kansas City, MODeep within us there is a life we long to live, yet we are faced with the inconvenient truth that the life we actually live is often vastly different. Can this gap be closed? Can we more fully experience the life we truly long to live? What is the story the Bible presents to us regarding the life we were designed to live and the contribution we have been created to make in the world? How might we more fully embrace a seamless Gospel faith that makes it possible for us to experience the life we long to live, an integral faith that connects Sunday to Monday?McGowan 117/118

Living In and Through the Story that Makes Sense of Every StorySteven Garber, Founder and Principal of the Washington Institute for Faith,Vocation, & Culture, Washington, DCIn a culture where nothing is true for everyone everywhere, are there any signposts that tell us who we are and how we are to live? Or does reality adapt? Does the universe readjust? Does history alter, generation by generation? Are there any “meants” and “oughts” and “shoulds” to human life under the sun? If we honestly believe God has spoken into history, what does it mean for the way we understand our lives, our learning, our loves?McGowan 117/118

The Macedonian Call: Presenting Christ Cross-CulturallyJohn E. 13CALLING & CAREER WEEK

Worship is the Work of God’s PeopleTimothy Wilds, Worship Arts Program Director at Montreat CollegeThe Vocation Symposium will challenge us to think of vocation, or work, as an act of worship to God. As important and true as that concept is, it is also important for Christians to understand that worship requires work. In many 21st century American churches, people sit passively while others perform. Such a model denies the people of God the right to work in worship. This workshop will provide answers to the question: “What are God’s people to do when they gather for worship?”Gaither 27

As we seek to be faithful for and responsible to one another and to creation, we can begin to explore, discover, and understand how God works in the midst of the world around us.Belk 305

This workshop will provide answers to the question: “What are God’s people to do when they gather for worship?”
