TULANE2011 NOTESTulane brings a 9-16 overall record and 4-10 C-USA mark into this week’s match. The Golden Wave dropped back-to-back conferences matches last weekend on the road at Marshall (2-3) and Tulsa (0-3) at home. Overall, Tulane has dropped four-of-five C-USA outings, with its lone won coming in a 3-0 decision against East Carolina on Oct. 16. Cori Martone leads the Tulane attack with 295 kills, while M. Mandelbaum (591) and Lilly Wolfe (349) both see extensive time at setter. Nikki Osuna has anchored the defense with 420 digs this season.

LAST OUTING (Oct. 2, 2011)NEW ORLEANS, La. - The University of Memphis Volleyball team defeated Tulane in straight sets (25-19;25-19;25-17) behind a double-double of 34 assists and 11 digs from Hajnalka Molnar. The Tigers improve to 14-4 and 3-2 in Conference USA play, while Tulane falls to 5-10 and 0-4 in C-USA.

Tulane opened the first set strong, going up 3-1 before Memphis settled into its routine. The Tigers fought back to tie the set at five behind back-to-back kills from Vesna Jelic and Marija Jovanovic. The teams traded points before Memphis took the lead for good at 10-9 after a service ace from Hajnalka Molnar.

Two kills from Jelic and an ace from Altrese Hawkins pushed the Tigers lead to 13-10 and powered an 8-2 run that gave Memphis a 17-11 advantage. Tulane called timeout and regrouped, however, going on a 5-1 run to make it 18-16 and force Memphis to call timeout. The Tigers responded with a 5-0 run of their own to make it 23-16, and a powerful kill from A. Hawkins sealed the set for Memphis, 25-19.

Set two began much like the first, as the Green Wave opened up a 3-2 advantage behind attack errors from the Tigers. Tulane maintained its advantage for the first half of the set and led 14-13 after an attack error on A. Hawkins, but back-to-back kills by Jovanovic gave the Tigers their first lead of the set at 15-14.

Memphis extended its 3-0 run into a 7-1 rally and extended its advantage to 20-15 Two Tulane errors and an ace from Lauren Hawkins allowed Memphis to take a commanding 23-17 advan-tage, and the 12th kill by Altrese Hawkins put the set away, 25-19. A. Hawkins led the Tigers in the second set with seven kills while hitting at a .500 clip. Molnar registered 13 assists in the set, while Aleksandra Petronijevic came up with five digs on the back row.

The Tigers jumped out to an early 6-2 lead behind a kill from L. Hawkins, blocks from A. Hawkins and Katie Meyer, and a service error from Molnar. Memphis extended that advantage to 8-4 after a kill down the middle from Katie Meyer and a service ace from A. Hawkins. Three-straight attack errors by Tulane gave the Tigers a 12-6 lead, and Memphis would never lead by less than four points for the remainder of the set. Kills from Meyer and A. Hawkins clinched the set, 25-17 and the match, 3-0.

SOUTHERN MISS2011 NOTESSouthern Miss brings a 13-14 overall mark and a 7-8 C-USA record into this weekend’s match. The Golden Eagles split two games with SMU at home last weekend, defeating the Mustangs 3-2 on Friday before falling in five sets Saturday. Southern Miss has a very balanced offensive attacks, as four players have more than 200 kills. Setter Kelsea Seymour leads the team in as-sists with 1,080, while Lisa Knecht has anchored the defense with 501 digs.

LAST OUTING (Sept. 30, 2011)HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Despite a double-double effort from Marija Jovanovic and 14 kills by Altrese Hawkins, the University of Memphis volleyball team (13-3, 2-2) dropped a 3-0 decision (18-25;23-25;18-25) to Southern Miss (7-8; 1-2) in its Conference USA road opener.

Southern Miss jumped out to a 5-2 advantage early, but a kill by A. Hawkins and an error by the Golden Eagles allowed Memphis to claw back to make it 5-4. Southern Miss then went on a 5-1 run to make it 10-5 and force Memphis to call a timeout.

The Tigers fought back to close the gap 13-9, but the Golden Eagles attack, which registered 18 kills in the set, proved to be too much. Southern Miss went on to close the set out 25-18. Hawkins led the Tigers in the set with three kills, while Jovanovic, Lauren Hawkins and Katie Meyer all registered two.

Memphis came out strong in the second set, opening up a 4-1 advantage behind two kills from A. Hawkins and the first career solo block by Alexis Wesley. The Tigers extended that lead to 7-2 behind two errors from Southern Miss and a kill by Jovanovic.

The Golden Eagles responded with a 5-1 run to make it 8-7 before Memphis went on a 6-2 run to make it 13-9 and force Southern Miss to take a timeout. The Golden Eagles tied the set for the first time after a block netted the score at 15 and would take their first lead on a kill that made it 18-17. The two teams traded points before Southern Miss took the lead for good 22-21.

With Memphis trailing in the set 24-21, the Golden Eagles made two-straight errors to make the score 24-23. Southern Miss put it away on the next point, however, taking the set 25-23. A. Hawkins led the Tigers in the second set with eight kills in 17 attempts, while Hajnalka Mol-nar contributed 14 assists.

The third set proved to be a battle that featured 14 ties and two lead changes. Southern Miss took an early 3-1 lead, but back-to-back kills from Jovanovic netted the set at three. The teams would go back and forth trading points, as neither team led by more than one, until two-straight Southern Miss blocks gave the Golden Eagles a 13-15 advantage.

The Tigers used a kill from L. Hawkins and an ace from Vesna Jelic to tie the set at 15. A kill from A. Hawkins again netted the set at 16 before back-to-back blocks from Southern Miss put the Golden Eagles ahead for good. Leading 18-16, Southern Miss closed the set on a 7-2 run to win the set 25-18 and the match, 3-0.

2010 in ReviewCoach Jauregui and the Tigers welcomed in nine newcomers from across the globe in 2010 and had a successful campaign while getting everyone adjusted to the Memphis way of doing things. The Tigers posted a 16-16 record, including a 9-3 non-confer-ence mark and won both the Memphis Tiger Invitational and Belmont Invitational pre-season tournaments. Altrese Hawkins was named to Conference USA’s All-First Team in addition to being a second-team performer in COBRA Magazine’s 2010 postsea-son awards. Senior Christine Bach accompanied Hawkins on the C-USA All-Academic Team (the second-straight selection for Hawkins and fourth-straight for Bach), while the Tigers earned AVCA’s Academic Team Award for the eighth consecutive season. Bach was also named to ESPN’s All-Academic District IV First Team, while Hawkins earned AVCA Honorable Mention All-America honors.

Like a HawkAltrese Hawkins continues to rake in the honors, as the redshirt-junior was named to Conference USA’s All-Preseason team. The selection comes after her selection to C-USA’s All-Conference First Team following the completion of the 2010 season. Hawkins also earned All-Freshman honors after her first season in 2009. Hawkins was selected to COBRA Magazine’s All-Preseason First Team. She earns the award after a stellar sophomore season in which she downed 483 kills and held a team-best hitting percentage of .305. She was one of only two Tigers to compete in all 122 sets during the 2010 campaign, highlighted by a 29-kill performance against Southern Miss on Oct. 29. The 29-kill showing ranks eighth in the Memphis record book for the most kills in a single match. 800-win MilestoneThe University of Memphis Volleyball program, entering its 40th year in 2011, col-lected its 800th program victory with a 3-1 victory over SEMO on August 26. The Tigers are currently 29th on the all-time NCAA Volleyball wins list.

Juniors RuleWith no seniors of the 2011 roster, the Tigers will rely heavily on their talented junior class of Altrese Hawkins, Cassidy Hawkins, Vesna Jelic, Marija Jovanovic, Maja Kostic, and Hajnalka Molnar, which includes five starters from last year’s squad.

vs. UCFFriday, Nov. 4Memphis, 3-1

Hawkins’ 23 Kills Not Enough For TigersMEMPHIS, Tenn. - In the first of four straight home matches for the Tigers, the Memphis women’s volleyball team dropped a four-set (24-26, 18-25, 25-22, 20-25) decision to UCF Thursday night in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.

The Tigers used an early 6-2 spurt in set one to gain a two-point advantage thanks in part to solid offensive play from Altrese Hawkins and Jovanovic. But Memphis service errors allowed the Knights to climb back in it with four straight points to go up 11-9. A timeout got the Tigers back on track as they regained the lead at 13-12 with a block from Jovanovic and Meyer. From there the two teams battled it out with the lead constantly changing hands. With the score knotted at 22, UCF’s Evija Vilde found an opening with two straight kills to give the Knights two set points. Hawkins saved the first one with a kill, and Memphis stayed alive with a block on the second one. But it was a UCF block that sealed the set for the Knights two points later at 26-24. Both teams hit over .350 for the set with Hawkins posting six kills with a .750 efficiency.

UCF tallied the first three points of set two before Vesna Jelic got the Tigers on the board with a kill. But the Knights quickly ran out to an 11-6 lead, prompting a Memphis timeout. The Tigers fought back out of the break with four straight scores to earn a chance to tie but couldn’t quite complete the comeback as the Knights put together a 7-1 run to go up 18-11.

Memphis came out firing in the third set to tally a 4-1 lead. But a 6-0 run the other way quickly had the Tigers staring into an 8-4 hole. A service ace from Jovanovic halted the run and sparked another 4-1 Tiger spurt to get within one point at 9-8. Back-to-back hitting errors then allowed Memphis to regain the lead at 12-11. The Tigers kept their foot on the gas and eventually built a 17-11 cush-ion. The Knights responded with a 6-1 run to get within one point, but timely kills from Hawkins kept UCF at bay and pushed the Memphis lead back to 22-18. The Tigers finally closed out the set 25-22 on another kill from Hawkins, her eighth of the set.

After watching victory slip through their fingers in the third set, the Knights were determined to end the night in the fourth, jumping out to an early 6-2 lead. The advantage grew to 12-5 midway through the set after four straight UCF points. A strong front line kept the Knight momentum going as kills were plentiful for the road team. Memphis climbed back to within four at 19-15 after a kill from Hawkins and back-to-back UCF hitting errors, but it was too little too late. UCF held on to win the set and the match, 25-20.

vs. UCF Thursday, Nov. 3

UCF, 3-1

Career-High Performances Help Tigers Take Down UCF In Four SetsMEMPHIS, Tenn. - Behind career-best performances by Lauren Hawkins and Katie Meyer, the Memphis volleyball team (16-12, 5-10 C-USA) knocked off UCF (16-10, 8-7 C-USA) in four sets (20-25, 15-25, 28-26, 25-23), ending a six-game skid for the Tigers.

The first block by Meyer and Marija Jovanovic put the Tigers on the board first and set the tone for set one. With the game even at 3-3, the Tigers went on a 3-0 run to take a 7-4 advantage before the Knights tied things back up at 10 all following a service error by Molnar. However, Meyer would pair up with Jovanovic and Vesna Jelic for two more key blocks before UCF called a timeout down 13-10. A service error by UCF’s Tory McCutcheon, followed by a block by L. Hawkins propelled the Blue and Gray to a 17-12 edge. A rally by UCF brought the Knights within one, but after a break called by the U of M, the Tigers struck with two quick kills by L. Hawkins and A. Hawkins. A 6-1 run by the Tigers closed out the first-set victory for Memphis.

In the second set, UCF jumped out to a 6-2 lead, moving the Tigers to call an early timeout. Memphis still struggled to regroup at first, as their conference foe scored the next three points, but the Tigers rallied to narrow the gap, 11-8, and the Knights would call a timeout. Memphis would fail to climb out of the hole as four errors by the U of M and an offensive attack led by UCF’s Crump, who fin-ished the set with four kills, sealed it, 25-15, for the visitors.

Two service aces by Molnar and two kills by A. Hawkins opened up play in the third and Memphis found itself with a 4-0 lead. A third ace was tallied by Petronijevic to keep the U of M at an 8-4 edge. Later, with the score at 12-6, UCF would put together a 9-0 run before Petronijevic recorded her first kill of the sea-son to stop the Knights’ charge.

The Tigers would claw back from a 15-12 deficit to even things up in the critical set at 23. Crump’s kill put the Knights up by one, but A. Hawkins countered wth her sixth kill of the match to tie things again at 24. Play continued and with the teams squared up at 26, an error by Delaina Sarden gave the Tigers the edge and L. Hawkins put away the set for the Blue and Gray with her sixth kill of the set.

Rachel Vukson got the ball rolling in the fourth set with a service ace for UCF. Meyer partnered with Jovanovic for her fifth block of the night to bring the set to 3-3. Lead changes were the story of the set until the Tigers found themselves down 23-20. A 5-0 Memphis spurt, which included Molnar’s third service ace, would clinch the victory for the Tigers, 25-23.

CONFERENCE USA

After marking its 15-year milestone during the 2009-10 season, Confer-ence USA is still going strong. From the beginning, dedication to excel-lence has been the league’s guid-ing principle and remains today a common thread for a promising fu-ture. C-USA is home to 12 nationally prominent, tradition-rich members in East Carolina, Houston, Marshall, Memphis, Rice, SMU, Southern Miss, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB, UCF and UTEP. This combination enhances men’s and women’s programs that are immersed in athletic success and academic prowess. Together, we are committed to excellence, integrity and leader-ship in athletics, academics and in our communities. All C-USA institutions sponsor Divi-sion I-A football, along with several other men’s and women’s athletic pro-grams, many of which compete regu-larly for NCAA Championships. C-USA sponsors competition in 20 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and indoor and outdoor track and field) and 11 for women (bas-ketball, cross country, golf, rowing, softball, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field and volleyball). The league sponsors numerous academic awards, including the Com-missioner’s Honor Roll and the Com-missioner’s Academic Medal, indica-tive of outstanding achievement in the classroom. C-USA annually awards 12 post-graduate scholarships, along with the Sport Academic Award, Scholar Athletes of the Year and the Institu-tional Academic Excellence Award. Conference USA also added a Spirit of Service Award, recognizing stu-dent-athletes three times a year for a combination of significant community service efforts, good academic stand-ing and participation in their elected sport.
