1980 VOLLEYBALL OUTLOOK"To say that we have a realistic chance at making it to the
nationals is putting it mildly. This is the best team ever fieldedatMSU."
Normally the preceding statements might be considered theusual preseason propaganda, but for MSU Volleyball coachDiane Hale, who returns all but one starterfrom last year's AIAWregional qualifying team, her comment has some legitimacyto it.
Leading tha charges for the Lady Tigers once again this fall issenior hitter Sandy Monce, who was selected last spring to tryout for the United States Olympic team in Colorado Springs,Colorado, the site of the National Sports Festival where Moncecompeted as a member of the southern regional team in 1978. Aformer high jumper, her jumping abilities, which are improvedevery year from summer beach volleyball in Florida, shouldmake her a dominating force in the middle.
Taking some of the workload off Monce in the middle is 6-1freshman Holly Buford, who together with Monce should givethe Lady Tigers an excellent 1 -2 defensive combo at the net forblocking purposes.
Returning to provide power on the outside are seniors CelesteHoman and Lowette Swinton, while Linda Conner, an all-aroundathlete and junior transfer from Ole Miss is expected to moveright into the starting line-up. Homan is a very aggressive andintense player, while Swinton is a strong hitter and is perhapsthe best serve receiver on the team.
Other returning hitters, who will give Hale the best team depthshe has ever had are seniors Barb Whitaker and Margi McNeelyand sophomores Debbi Hammond and Cindy Stoots.
The biggest question mark for the Lady Tigers this year is whowill fill the setter's position. Senior Becky Harden has occupiedthe starting spot forthe past three years, but without competingin any offseason USVBA ball, will be pressed from freshmanAmy Watson, who was selected to compete in an USVBA EliteDevelopment Camp in Michigan over the summer.
In addition to Watson and Buford, this year's freshman classis the best ever brought into the MSU volleyball program.
The other most notable newcomers are Memphian CarolHooker, who despite being only 5-8 has an excellent verticlejump for plenty of offensive potential, and Floridians Teri Clark,a setter, and hitter Kim Fraser, who were selected to face eachother in the Florida Athletig Coaches Association All-Star gamelast summer.
Lookfor Clark to also make a run forthe number one setter'sposition.
In preparation for post-season success, the Lady Tigers willface a difficult schedule, which include several more meetingswith the best region 2 schools. In addition to rival Ole Miss, theLady Tigers home schedule is highlighted by the first-time MetroConference tournament, the 17th annual Memphis State Invita-tional and an exhibition match with the United States Nationalteam.
