UNIDAD of Miami Beach,Inc. offers a unique and innovativeyouth development and leadershipprogram aimed at providing innercity youth the motivation to reachhigher, dream bigger, and worksmarter while achieving life andcareer goals. The goal of theNew Generation Leadership andWorkforce Institute (NGLWI) is tohelppreparetoday’syouthtoexcelintomorrow’sworkforceandintheirlivesoverall. The New GenerationLeadershipandWorkforce Institute(NGLWI)enhances academic andcareer training by using currentandfuturelabormarketinformationto create a roadmap of shortand long term goals that alignwith participants’ abilities andinterests. The program is fundedby the South Florida WorkforceInvestment Board with supportfrom the City of Miami Beach.369 youth have graduated the
programsince2005.Theprogramoffers a year-round continuum ofacademic andcareer developmentopportunities and culminates inan intensive summer programfor two levels of selected youth.Level I and Level II programmingprovidemoreadvancedleadership,workforce,andcareerdevelopmentactivities including internship,work experience, leadershiptraining, civic involvement learning,preventivepregnancy, anda socialentrepreneurship business plancompetition. Today we celebrate thegraduation of the 48 exceptionalyouthwhohavecompletedLevelIofTheNewGenerationLeadershipandWorkforceInstitute(NGLWI).Joinusinrecognizingtheirachievements.

AsofFebruary2,2010,JamesLoftuswasappointedDirectoroftheMiami-DadePoliceDepartment(MDPD). Mr. Loftusisa26-yearveteranofthedepartment,holdingvari-ouscivilservicesranks.Priortohisappointment,Mr.LoftuswastheAssistantDirectoroverInvestigativeServices,overseeingmajorbureauswithinMDPDincludingHomicide,Robbery,SexualCrimes,Narcotics,DomesticCrimes,EconomicCrimes,Warrants,andtheStrategicandSpecializedInvestigationBureaus. Duringhiscareer,hehasservedasasupervisorinUniformPa-trol,ProfessionalComplianceBureau,CriminalConspiracyUnit,andasCaptainoftheHomicideBureau.In1999,hewaspromotedtoMajoroftheHomicideBureau,andwaslaterpromotedandservedasChiefoftheCriminalInvestigationsDivision. Inadditiontohislawenforcementexperience,MrLoftushasbeenactivelyinvolvedwiththePoliceOfficerAssistanceTrust(POAT),anon-profitsupportorganizationforthelawenforcementcommunityofMiami-DadeCounty,sinceitsinceptionin1989.HecurrentlyservesasPresidentoftheorganization.HeisalsoamemberoftheMiami-DadeCountyAssociationofChiefsofPolice,andservesontheBoardofDirectorsoftheTwoHundredClubofGreaterMiami.
2011 education excellence awardDr.CarrasquilloiscurrentlyanAssociateProfessorofMedicineandChiefoftheDivisionofGeneralInternalMedicineattheUniversityofMiami’sMillerSchoolofMedicine.HeisaPuertoRicanbornphysicianwhowasraisedintheBronx.HegraduatedsummacumlaudefromtheSophieDavisSchoolofBio-MedicalEducationatCityCollege,andsubsequentlyobtainedhisMDdegreefromtheNewYorkUniversitySchoolofMedicine.Hecompletedathree-yearinternalmedicineresi-dencyatColumbia-PresbyterianMedicalCenterandthencompletedHarvard’stwo-yearGeneralMedicineFellowshipandobtainedanMPHfromtheHarvardSchoolofPublicHealth.
Fortwelveyears,Dr.CarrasquillowasfacultymemberatColumbiaUniversity’sCollegeofPhysiciansandSurgeonsrisingtotherankofAssociateProfessorofMedicine,HealthPolicyandCommunityPart-nerships.AtColumbia,hewasalsodirectoroftheirNIHfundedP60CenterofExcellenceinHealthDisparitiesResearchandalsodirectorofthePrimaryCareFellowshipProgram;acombinedresearchtrainingprograminvolvingGeneralMedicine,PediatricsandFamilyMedicine.

A native of Suffolk,Virginia, whom now lives inAugusta,Georgiawhereracingisnotmerelyahobby;it’sawayoflife.TiaNorfleetisusetobreakingbarriersandshewellknowsthelowoddsandrisksinvolvedwithbeing a professional racecardriver. None of this mattersthough. Tia loves what shedoes and she’ll stop at nothingto make it. Racing is her life. Growingupthedaughterofaministerandaprofessional
racecar driver (Bobby Norfleet),Tiawas introduced to thesportof auto racing at a very youngage. In a predominately white,malesport,sheistheexceptionto the rule. Female drivers arerare enough, but an African-Americanaswell?It’sneverbeendone.TiaistryingtobecomethefirsttomakeitintotheNASCARcircuit. It’s a goal she’s beenaiming toward for quite sometime. She has been successfulatdragracingandontheshortertracks circuit known as the latemodels,wheresherecordedtwotop-15finishes.“Aroundtheageof14iswhenIreally,reallyknewthatthiswaswhatIwantedtodoforaliving;thiswasmypassion,”she stated in an interviewwith the Huffington Post.“I don’t focus on getting hurt,”she says. “I don’t pay attentionto thecrashes. Ibelieve inGodand that everything happens
forareason.Isaymyprayers,IthankhimandIjustgoforwhatIknow.”Safetyisavitalelementtoanydriver,really.Butinthecaseof Tia and her father, it playseven more of a role. Bobby isquicktopointoutthatwhilesheis his driver (for Bobby NorfleetRacing), she’s also his child,and that he always errs on theside on caution when possible. Her motto, “Get right orgetleft,”assheproudlyexclaimstome,isadailymotto,notmerelya clever tagline. While Tia haslearnedtoliveinthemoment,sherealizes the implications of hercareer and will stop at nothingto earn her NASCAR stripes.
