Spears Sports Club - 10th Year Anniversary 2010 [4]

IntroductionIn the year 2000 a group of dedicated Muslims came together with the vision of establishing a sports club in the heart of Bankstown, which caters for the youth in the area.

After a large quantity of hard work and effort which was put into forming the sports club, which also resulted in extensive research a name for the club was agreed upon. Spears Sports Club was formed and registered as a non-profitable organisation.

The name Spears was one of the suggestions which came from the founder and famous noteworthy or-ganisation the Islamic Charity Projects Association which is located in Winspear Ave, Bankstown.

Spears Sports Club is currently affiliated and actively participating in tournaments within the following New South Wales Parents Associations:

Club FounderIslamic Charity Projects Association

I am very privileged and honoured to celebrate with you the 10th anniversary of youth club that has grown from strength to strength the Spears Sports Club.

The achievements and success of the Spears Sports Club are due to the hard work, commitment and loyalty of its active members. So, tonight we proudly recognise the ef-forts of the Spears Sports Club delegates, coaches, managers, volunteers and players, as we thank them for their work in placing the Club on the Sydney sports scene.

The Spears Sports Club was founded in 1999 by a very well known leading Islamic as-sociation in Australia, “The Islamic Charity Projects Association”. Soon after, in 2000 the Club played its first football competition here in the heart of Bankstown City Council at the Outer Memorial Oval.

Spears was established to service the youth in Bankstown. We saw this club as the bridge of self improvement. The youth who crossed this bridge walked a path of per-sonal development to help them realise their potential and reach their goals in life. Our vision was and still is to respond to the social and personal needs of the Muslim youth community living in multicultural Australia, through sport and recreation. Seeing these needs we established the following frameworks which guide our practice.

1 - To instill good sportsmanship and positive self-esteem in the Muslim Youth to benefit the Australian community. 2 - To nurture and train Muslim Youth so as to discover and encourage their talents and skills in various sporting activities. 3 - To pave the way for community integration and contribution to aid social harmony in Australia. 4 - To enhance the image of the Muslim Youth by developing their commitment to Australia’s society and guiding them to become role models of moderation in Australia.

The ICPA has been involved with many youth activities including welfare services, education and scouts. One of its successful and fast growing initiatives has been the establishment and the provision of Spears Sports Club in response to community demand.

President’s Report Spears Sports Club has survived the first ten years on the sports scene may come as a surprise to the envious few. But, it certainly is no surprise to the people of vision who founded the club and for the many affiliates, associates and members who consider the Club an extended family.

We have passed the treacheries of the establishment stage where our main goal was to coordinate and supply by to meeting demands. With precision and careful consideration to our environment we entered the growth phase, which is now setting the stage for the club to spear to maturity in the coming years.

The strong growth of the Spears Sports Club is due to many factors, none more outstanding than the support of the Muslim community in and around Bankstown. When the Club first opened its hands ten years ago the crowd came running. Since then it has been a relationship of mutual respect and appreciation. From day one the club realised its greatest asset was its members. The club will stay true to that. The Club will remain diligently serving its clientele, ensuring no one gets left behind.

When Spears Sports Club was first established in 2000, its objective was simply to promote and grow sport in the local area. We took every avenue, turned every corner, and crossed every bridge to reach our goal, having fun along the way. Ten years later, the Club boasts strong networks which have helped it face its challenges.

Backed by the strong reputation of its founders, the Islamic Charity Projects Association, Spears Sports Club became affiliated with BDAFA. We started with five junior teams and a senior team. Our teams have more than doubled in 10 years, winning a number of premierships in various age groups. Our seniors won the title three years in the row.

In late 2002 Spears started Karate training hiring an international karate trainer. Spears also became affiliates with NSW Karate Federation enabling our players to be recognised and to participate in major tournaments. In 2003, 10 Spears Karate players were selected to join the state team representing NSW in the national tournament. In the past decade, more than 25 Spears Karate players were selected to join the state team representing NSW. In 2007 it was an honour for the club when one of its players was granted a plaque as the best karate kumite player for her age group.

In 2003 the club affiliated with Bankstown Netball Association to become the first and only Muslim club in the country to give Muslim girls and women the opportunity to participate in a sporting activity in appropriate Islamic uniform that did not compromise the sport. The club’s innovative approach to women’s sports gained the support of Bankstown District Netball Association and the Bankstown community at large.

Page 7: 10th Year Anniversary Year Book

In 2004 the Club affiliated with NSW Table Tennis. With a former NSW champion training our players, winning tournaments was easy. Notably, in 2006, 2 of our players came second in the metropolitan championship.

Althou gh we have gone from strength to strength in the sports arena, the Club suffered a major setback in 2007 in terms of facilities, with the loss of the Scout Hall in Georges Hall to Bankstown City council. This dramatically affected the Club’s ability to continue its track record in sports like karate and table tennis. Bankstown City Council did its best to compensate by offering a community hall at various times. But the instability took its toll on the number of players. We recognise the need for a Spears Sports Club premises. We have drafted the plans to build a facility that will accommodate your sporting needs. We are hopeful it will manifest in the near future.

Spears Sports Club has been fortunate to have some great volunteers and generous sponsors over the years. Working together, along with a staff of almost 25, they have developed Spears Sports club into what is arguably the fasted growing club in NSW.

Lastly, I thank the entire Bankstown community for supporting the growth of their Club.

Secretary’s Report

It was a pleasure to represent Spears Sports Club as the secretary in 2010. Regardless the work or time it surley was worthwhile. I have been a member of the club from te time it was established. I do remeber myself growing with a bunch of dedicated committee members.

2010 was a special year for all of us at Spears Sports Club. It is a year that allows us to lift our heads high and reflect on what we have acheived for our community in and around Banks-town. It also makes us look back at the good and hard times that the Club passed by in the past years. Although they were difficlut they were still considered successful.

Looking back 10 years from today I remeber many outstanding events that the club acheived from partnership winning teams, to the first ever Muslim Netball Club in the na-tion. Taking further steps inti the arena and becoming affiliated with the NSW Karate Fed-eration which had a grweat impact on the CLub by its members in becoming NSW State representatives.

The LCub has shown many examples of great sportsmanship, from team building, dedica-tion, pride and success. Speaking from apersonal prespective the Club has provided many great opportunities for the young generation that is growing - people as young as 14 years have the opportunity to take a role and become a leader in the community.

Clearly its the highlight ofthe decade to see people enjoying more of their Club and know-ing that they look forward to returning to from year to year.

On the other hand I would like to thank all committee members for giving me the opportu-nity to lead this Club and a special thanks to my collegue Mohammad Zahab who once was in my shoes and lead the way in making my job eaiser.

As for season 2010 I take the oppotunity to thank al volunteers including coaches and man-agers who made 2010 a success. Also to Mohammed Ghamroui and Mohammaed Abboud to work extremely hard in making the finals. As to Mohammaed Taiba keep your good work up and well done on working hard to develop a division one team, Your dedicated work is an assest to Spears Sports Club.

Football ReportOur goal is to increase the depth of our player skill ability, our club has taken significant steps in increasing the coaches knowledge and understanding of Football, this came by registering them in Football coaching course.

The coaches were supported throughout the year by the club which lead to a great relationship not only with the player also with their parents.

On the field we enjoy our share of success although not always the teams win. However justing the kids become physically active makes you feel that you have won by acheiving your goal.

Throughout the years Spears dedication, commitment and hard workhas come in a long and challenging year. However the outcome has been reached - that is success.

As for our coaching team we faced a number of challenges in our first season together. Thanks to all coaches for their drive and commitment throughout the season, while the hard work of our committee helped us get through year by year which made many faces return to our club.

We can not forget out hero who is also known as Tarek the ground marshall. Tarek has been a member and ground marshall since the establisement of out club in 2000 and beleive it or not Tarek has not missed one Saturday since ten - thats what you call long service.

I would like to congratulate Spears Sports Club on 10 years of success and thank all coaches, managers and volunteers for making it happen.

Netball ReportThe Spears Sports Club also ventured into a sport area heralded as the first of its type in Australia when it established the Muslim Netball team for females, catering for females aged 6 years and up.

The goal that Spears Netball was to open the door for the female community into one of Australia’s most famous sports. The Netball Division provided an appropriate environment for Muslim females to compete in the sports arena whilst maintaining their modest dress code including wearing the hijab that is expected in Islam. The Muslim Netball team commenced training in 2002 and competed in their first Local District Netball Competition.I can say that being involved with Spears Sports Club for 6years, it has fulfilled this purpose.

The Netball Association recognised and supported Spears Sports Club Netball with the great progress that the Club achieved in their first year. Association President for 2002 Betty Moore was quoted as saying: “I take this opportunity to congratulate the Muslim girls of the Spears Sports Club for their courageous entry into sport. It has been 40 years since the Association last witnessed such an entry of Muslim girls playing sport wearing their veils. I hope that you will continue with diligence and persist to achieve greatly in the following season.”

Politicians and local council members also praised and commended Spears Netball for their persistence with integrating within a sport that is very well publicised in Australia.

Each year the teams increased, in 2006 Spears Netball had 5 teams which ranged from the age of 8 years and up. The first Senior Netball team had a very close match that went through to the Grand finals, missing out by only one goal. What a fantastic game from a dedicated team of competitive women as they held their heads up high and walked away as winners.

Spears Netball had 5 Qualified Umpires that were commended with excellent umpiring; without our umpires we would not have been able to compete in the competition. We also had two of our 12yr old girls have the opportunity to tryout for the representative team which was a great opportunityfor Spears Netball.

Spears Netball had Junior teams in 2007; unfortunately 2008 was the last year that Spears Netball was involved in competition with Bankstown City Netball Association.

A special thanks to all the managers, umpires, coaches, and committee members for all their tireless effort. Their sheer dedication and perservance helped them endure a successful Spears Netball club for Muslim females.

Karate Report

Karate at Spears started in 2004 it attraced over 50 members from different ages. The

first tournment that the Club entered was the NSW Karate Open Championship and

with only 6 months training 10 of its members were selected to represent NSW in the

Nationals which was held in Melbourne - Victoria.

One year later the decided to expand and open in Liverpool - thanks to our sponsor Al

Amanah College agreed to hire the hall to Spears the club started in 2005 in Liverpool

with only 10 students and later reached well above 50 . From time to time Karate camps

and semiars took place between both dojo’s which increased the skills and experience

of the players.

Form then on Spears Karate was extremely succussful winning extensive champion-

ships and many players being selected to represent their state in the Nationals.

From then players increased and the club decided to increase the number of training

days in order to cater for all the players and memebers at different grading levels.

Unfortunaly in 2007 Karate had a major set back which made it hard for all players and

competitiors to training, the scout hall that they hird in Georges Hall was taken away

and they were left with no alternative except by Al Amanah College - Bankstown who

allowed our club to use their facilities.

Since then the committe has hang in there and were can the up rising od Karate again

as new members are enrolling and are looking forward to 2011 to make it a great and

successful year.
