Welcome to the 29th Yearbook!

President’s Foreword

The Herald Sun is honoured to sponsor the Cartoonist of the Year.Congratulations to all Gold Stanley nominees at the 29th Stanley Awards.

2013

By now, of course, you’ve noticed it’s in a raging cornucopia of rainbow colours! And doesn’t it look fantastic? This is due in part to the colour, but it’s mostly due to the consistent quality of work produced by our outstanding Membership. Each year I love thumbing through the yearbook at the collected efforts of our Members and I know I say this every time I write the introduction, but voting is a near impossible task for me.

That being said, make sure you vote! Each year we see a considerable percentage of all voting forms that just aren’t returned. Our best results can only come when we have as many votes from our Membership as possible. And voting really can’t be simpler! You merely fill in the form (that will arrive in a separate envelope), fill it in with your picks for the year’s best and stick it into the stamped envelope provided. Throw it into a postbox and you’re all done! If you want to have a say in who receives the Stanley Awards each year, then make your vote count!

On the subject of voting, it’s been a big year on that score. Between the return of the bloke with the incomprehensible words to the demise of the woman with the acerbic words to the bloke with the three word sentences, there’s been a lot said overall that actually means very little. But of course, for us cartoonists it’s been a veritable goldmine. you can see some of the choicest cuts in our Editorial Cartoonist section within this yearbook.

Our categories each year are sustained by our sponsors and we simply couldn’t do what we do each year without this generous support: Herald Sun, Wacom, Copyright Agency, The Australian, MEAA and Rotary Cartoon Awards.

Speaking of supporters, I need to thank the superstars of the yearbook who have compiled this edition. Peter Broelman, Jason Chatfield and newcomer to the team this year, Chris Barr, who worked so hard to find us a method of printing in full colour at the same price as previous years. I think you’ll agree, we’re grateful to have had his insight into both the yearbook and Inkspot (which he also managed to successfully convert to colour!)

I couldn’t be happier with how the yearbook looks this year. It’s a real testament to the quality of cartooning in not only our Association, but in our country as well. In a year when we’ve seen an unhalting exodus of cartoonists from newsprint, it’s refreshing to see that the quality of our work has never diminished. If anything, it just gets stronger and stronger.

So sit back and enjoy your yearbook. After all, you helped create it with your contribution! Then take the next step and vote and we’ll see you in Coffs Harbour to find out who’ll take the Stanleys home!Cartooning forever!
