Kirkland’s commitment to public service runs deep.From our nationally recognized pro bono program toour close-knit diversity partnerships, we believecommunity betterment is essential to functioning atthe highest level of our profession.

The Kirkland & Ellis Foundation is our financial prongto this mission.

Founded in 1982, the Foundation provides monetarysupport to charitable and law-related organizationsthat serve a range of initiatives. Anchored by 10offices on three continents, the Foundation’s beneficialimpact is felt in the United States and around theworld, with regular support from Kirkland & EllisInternational LLP. Annual contributions from Kirklandpartners fund the Foundation. Employees, associatesand partners of the Firm can also have charitablecontributions matched through the Foundation’sEmployee Matching Program.

The Foundation helps hundreds of charitable effortssucceed every year. Donations are primarily focusedon groups that help improve the administration oflegal services. Additional funds are donated toorganizations committed to enhancing quality of lifethrough emergency relief, legal assistance, communityservices, green/conservation efforts, culturalawareness, health care initiatives, youth programs,education opportunities and diversity sensitivity.

In 2010, the Foundation donated approximately $6.1 million dollars to 1,036 charitable organizations inthe United States and around the world.

This booklet profiles just a handful of the initiatives towhich we provided financial support in 2010. It is anhonor for us to partner with organizations that provideexceptional services to the world’s communities, in thesame way that Kirkland has provided the highest qualitylegal services to its clients for more than 100 years.

After a devastating earthquake struck Haiti onJanuary 12, 2010, the Kirkland & Ellis Foundation andKirkland employees contributed $310,000 which wentto the American Red Cross and the Grace House ofHope orphanage and school.

Since its founding in 1881, the American Red Crosshas been the nation’s premier emergency responseorganization. In an operation that has involved moreemergency response teams than any other single-country disaster in global Red Cross history, theAmerican Red Cross has so far spent or committedmore than $67 million to meet the most urgent needsof earthquake survivors in Haiti.

“The generous contributions and support of ourpartners are critical to the ability of the American RedCross to provide help and hope for the people of Haitiduring their time of need,” said Jeffrey Towers, chiefdevelopment officer of the American Red Cross. “Weare rushing supplies and disaster management staff toHaiti in the aftermath of the earthquake, and are verygrateful to the Kirkland & Ellis Foundation, attorneysand staff for their support of our humanitarianmission.”

Grace House of Hope orphanage and school hasserved as the home for numerous orphaned and

abandoned children in the outskirts of Port-au-Princesince its founding in 1992 by Marie Major. GraceHouse currently includes two orphanages and an on-site school that provides daily food and education tomore than 200 children. Kirkland’s contributionsprovided temporary relief for the children and helpedfund orphanages, one of which collapsed.

In November 2010, after living in makeshift tents andtemporary shelters for 10 months, the girls were ableto move into the new orphanage and have startedattending school again. Ms. Major and the girls nowhave better shelter and food sources than ever before.Kirkland attorneys also provided pro bono efforts toestablish an expedited adoption process for Haitianorphans.

A number of Firm clients, including Code, Hennessy &Simmons, GTCR Golder Rauner, Madison DearbornPartners, Oaktree Capital Management, GoldmanSachs and Morgan Stanley, as well as otherorganizations with whom we have strongrelationships, including the Women's Bar Associationof the District of Columbia, made or pledged to makesignificant donations totaling more than $100,000 forthe benefit of Grace House.

Chicago Volunteer Legal ServicesChicago Volunteer Legal Services (CVLS) is anorganization of nearly 3,000 volunteer attorneys who,combined, handle more litigation and family law casesthan any other legal aid program in Illinois. CVLSmaintains 22 clinics throughout Chicago to assistindividuals facing foreclosure, bankruptcy, divorce,landlord-tenant problems or immigration issues. In2010, more than 18,000 low-income Chicagoansreceived free legal aid through CVLS.

Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles CountySince 1965, Neighborhood Legal Services of LosAngeles County (NLSLA) has provided free legalservices to low-income residents in Los Angeles.NLSLA provides a wide range of volunteer opportunitiesfor attorneys, paralegals, translators and students. Bydoing so, the organization makes services in housing,family, immigration and employment law available tothose who can least afford it.

Public Counsel Law CenterPublic Counsel Law Center is the nation’s largestpublic interest law firm concentrating on pro bono legalservice to needy communities. Since 1970, PublicCounsel has protected the rights of disadvantagedchildren, immigrants from more than 30 countries, thehomeless and veterans by providing them with accessto quality legal representation. Through the dedicationof thousands of attorney and law student volunteers,Public Counsel annually delivers more than $80 millionworth of free assistance to low-income clients.

Public Interest Law InitiativeThe Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) is aimed atimproving awareness of public interest law and theneed for legal services for the underprivileged. PILIrelies on support from donors such as Kirkland toprovide opportunities for law students and lawyers toserve the underrepresented through education andlegal advocacy. PILI works with law firms, agencies,schools and corporations to facilitate suchopportunities. Since 1977, more than 3,000 lawstudents and graduates have participated in PILIprograms.

Washington Lawyers’ Committee forCivil Rights and Urban AffairsFor the past 40 years, the Washington Lawyers’Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs hasaddressed issues of civil rights violations and povertyin Washington, D.C. The Committee’s efforts andprograms have expanded from a small staff focusedon racial discrimination to a large organizationproviding pro bono representation in a broad range ofcivil rights and related poverty topics. Funding fromthe Kirkland & Ellis Foundation helps the private bar toaddress issues of civil rights violations and poverty inD.C.

The Commercial Club of ChicagoThe Commercial Club of Chicago, a membershiporganization of business and civic leaders throughoutChicago, is one of the city’s oldest organizationspromoting economic and social development. TheCommercial Club has been involved in a variety ofprojects, such as cleaning and paving city streets,improving public schools, and developing city parksand playgrounds. To pursue their goals, theCommercial Club works with other organizations tostreamline efforts.

FDNY FoundationThe FDNY Foundation benefits the New York City FireDepartment, supporting FDNY in its protection of NewYork City from fires, emergencies and terrorist attacks.Donations from the Kirkland & Ellis Foundation andother organizations help fund public outreachprograms, equipment and technology, and educationand training to reduce injuries and fatalities within theDepartment.

Sanctuary for FamiliesSanctuary for Families is dedicated to the safety,healing, and self-sufficiency of battered women andchildren. With multiple locations throughout New YorkCity, Sanctuary for Families offers a broad range ofservices, including shelter, legal assistance andcounseling. Kirkland proudly supports this organizationin its effort to end the far-reaching impact of domesticviolence through outreach, education and advocacy.

San Francisco FoodbankEach year, the San Francisco Foodbank collectsmillions of pounds of food from farmers,manufacturers and grocery stores, and donates it tomore than 400 San Francisco organizations. Thesedonations provide much-needed food toapproximately 200,000 hungry people in SanFrancisco. The San Francisco Foodbank alsoprovides nutrition education and more than 100varieties of produce to enable people to set healthiergoals and choices.

Women In Need Growing StrongerWomen In Need Growing Stronger (WINGS) provideshousing and supportive services to women and theirchildren who are on the verge of becoming homelessin Chicago’s Northwest suburbs. WINGS manages 21transitional homes and apartments, three permanenthousing units and a 15,000-square-foot house thatcan accommodate up to 45 women and children. In2010, WINGS offered shelter to more than 400individuals, and provided more than 3,200 hours ofcounseling services to 130 additional women andchildren.

Elephant SanctuaryThe Elephant Sanctuary is the nation’s largest naturalhabitat refuge developed specifically for endangeredAfrican and Asian elephants. The Sanctuary operateson 2,700 acres 85 miles southwest of Nashville,Tennessee. Donations like those received from theKirkland & Ellis Foundation help to expand thesanctuary and provide the most proactive approach toelephant care.

Farm SanctuaryFarm Sanctuary has provided care for farm animalssince 1986. They strive to protect farm animals fromcruelty, inspire change in the way society views andtreats farm animals, and encourage vegan living. TheFarm operates two shelters — one in New York andone in California — each spanning hundreds of acres.Kirkland’s funding supports legal programs, crueltyinvestigations, public education, and the rescue andshelter of abused animals.

Friends of Ryerson WoodsFriends of Ryerson Woods sponsors environmentaleducation and nature preservation at the Emmanuel L.Ryerson Woods in Northern Illinois. Ryerson Woods isa 556-acre preserve, more than 275 acres of whichhave been dedicated as an Illinois Nature Preserve.The preserve includes six miles of hiking trails and ishome to a number of rare species, including the blue-spotted salamander, red-shouldered hawk and purplefringed orchid.

Grand Traverse Regional LandConservancyThe Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancyprotects significant natural, scenic and agriculturallands in Northwest Michigan. It protects land throughconservation easement, land acquisition andassistance of local government with land transfers.Since 1991, the Conservancy has protected morethan 33,000 acres of farm lands and more than 100miles of shoreline.

Northwoods Wildlife CenterNorthwoods Wildlife Center (NWC) is a wildliferehabilitation and education center in NorthernWisconsin committed to improving the future ofwildlife through rehabilitation, education and research.Each year, NWC takes in an average of 700 to 1,000patients, including mammals, birds and reptiles. NWCalso offers education programs and tours of thefacility throughout the year.

Chicago Humanities FestivalThe Chicago Humanities Festival (CHF) providesopportunities for individuals of all ages to enjoycultural activities centered around new developmentsin the arts, science, history, literature and philosophy.Each fall, talented artists produce concerts, films andlectures for thousands of festival attendees toshowcase the world’s cultures to diverse audiences.CHF also presents programs through out the year.

El Museo del BarrioEl Museo del Barrio, New York’s leading Latinocultural institution, is committed to promoting andcelebrating Latino, Caribbean and Latin Americancultures. There are more than 6,500 pieces of art ondisplay to the public, in addition to educationalprograms for people of all ages. Kirkland’s financialsupport to El Museo del Barrio enables the museumto continue offering unique exhibits, celebrations andprograms.

Redwood Library and AthenaeumFounded in 1747, the Redwood Library andAthenaeum is the oldest lending library in Americaand the oldest library building in continuous use in thecountry. Over the years, its collections have grownfrom 750 to more than 160,000 volumes. The libraryrelies on donations to improve the building, acquirenew books, and provide lectures and other programsto members.

Signature Theatre CompanyThe Signature Theatre Company was founded in 1991to honor and celebrate playwrights. It was the firsttheatre company to devote an entire season of workto the same playwright — an approach that continuestoday. The company relies on support from donorssuch as Kirkland to build its new facility, which willallow for additional programs in a larger space andkeep tickets affordable to the public.

United States Holocaust MemorialMuseumThe United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is thecountry’s official Holocaust memorial, created as away to advance the public’s knowledge about theHolocaust and serve as a memorial for those who losttheir lives during that time. Since the museum’sopening in 1993, it has received more than 30 millionvisitors from all over the world. Donations to themuseum help preserve its historical collections andexpand educational programs.

AIDS/LifeCycleAIDS/LifeCycle (ALC) was created in 2002 by the SanFrancisco AIDS Foundation and the L.A. Gay &Lesbian Center. This seven-day bike ride, which startsin San Francisco and ends in Los Angeles, raisesmoney to benefit HIV/AIDS research and programs.Each year, more than 2,500 cyclists raise funds forHIV/AIDS services, increasing awareness of HIV/AIDS.Since its inception, AIDS/LifeCycle has raised morethan $60 million for AIDS education.

Cancer Research InstituteCancer Research Institute (CRI) strives to developnew, immune-based approaches for the treatment,control and prevention of cancer. Since its founding in1953, nearly 3,000 dedicated scientists and clinicianshave worked at universities, hospitals and researchcenters worldwide to learn how to manipulate theimmune system to attack cancer. Kirkland is proud tosupport CRI in its training and research efforts.

Children’s Memorial FoundationChildren’s Memorial Foundation works to securecontributions for Children’s Memorial Hospital, whichis the Chicago area’s top provider of pediatricspecialty care and the only freestanding hospital inIllinois exclusively for children. In 2010, more than146,000 patients were treated at the hospital. Throughthe generosity of donors such as Kirkland, Children'sMemorial is able to provide world-class health care toall patients.

Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of AmericaThe Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA)is dedicated to finding a cure for Crohn’s disease andulcerative colitis through research and education.More than 1.4 million individuals in the United Statessuffer from these diseases. Funding from the Kirkland & Ellis Foundation helps to support publicprograms, patient education, seminars andpublications.

Doctors Without BordersDoctors Without Borders was founded in 1971 toprovide medical care in war-stricken, developingcountries and areas struck by natural disaster. Eachday, more than 27,000 committed doctors, nursesand other qualified professionals work to increaseaccess to vaccinations and other forms of medicalaid. For its humanitarian work in nearly 60 countries,Doctors Without Borders won the Nobel Peace Prizein 1999.

Children’s Home + AidChildren’s Home + Aid has improved the lives ofchildren and their families throughout Illinois for morethan 125 years. Each year, Children’s Home + Aidserves nearly 40,000 individuals through 70 socialservice programs that provide counseling, foster careand education. With the support of organizations suchas Kirkland, Children’s Home + Aid can continue toprovide help, hope and opportunities to children andfamilies in need.

International Organization for AdolescentsThe International Organization for Adolescents (IOFA)is a U.S.-based, non-governmental organizationworking in more than 20 countries worldwide tocombat human trafficking, empower girls, andsupport orphans in their transition to adulthood. IOFApartners with individuals and groups to providetraining, program development and networkingopportunities between adolescent-focusedorganizations. Such knowledge-sharing is beneficialnot only to these groups, but to the youth they serve.

Rosemary Children’s ServicesRosemary Children’s Services is one of the oldestcharities on the West Coast dedicated to helpingneglected and abused boys and girls of all ages. Eachyear, nearly 400 children benefit from Rosemary’s on-site housing, private schooling and therapy programs.

Rosemary also serves as a foster home forapproximately 300 youth each year, providing a stableenvironment, emotional support, and school and jobassistance for children up to 18 years of age.

The GuardsmenSince 1947, The Guardsmen has focused onimproving the lives of at-risk youth in the Bay Area.More than 2,500 disadvantaged youth participate inThe Guardsmen’s outdoor education programs eachyear. For many of these children, this is their firstventure into a wilderness setting. More than 250students also receive scholarships to attend privateschools.

Youth Automotive Training CenterThe Kirkland & Ellis Foundation proudly supportsYouth Automotive Training Center (YATC), which trainsand educates at-risk youth in basic automotive repairskills, academic remediation, job readiness and lifemanagement skills. The program prepares youngpeople to become self-sufficient adults. Monetarydonations to YATC fund textbooks for GEDpreparation, students’ public transportation costs,and groceries for these disadvantaged teens and theirfamilies.

All Stars Project, Inc.The All Stars Project, Inc. (ASP) is an after-schoolprogram committed to building cultural knowledge ininner-city youth. Each year, thousands of individuals,ages five to 25, participate in several dozen All Starsevents at locations on the East and West Coasts, andChicago. The organization promotes developmentthrough performing arts activities, thus buildingleadership and social skills in thousands ofdisadvantaged and diverse children annually.

The Chicago Public Education FundThe Chicago Public Education Fund (CPEF) invests inwell-managed, high-impact programs that improveschool leadership and student achievement throughoutthe system. CPEF is dedicated to improving allChicago public schools by building talented teams ofprincipals and teachers. CPEF is the only fund of itskind dedicated to improving an urban school systemand was established to encourage private sectorinvestment in public education.

Golden Apple FoundationThe Golden Apple Foundation was founded in 1985 to honor exceptional Chicago area teachers. Each year,more than 600 teachers are nominated, and acommittee selects 10 recipients to receive a cashaward and a paid semester sabbatical at NorthwesternUniversity. With only 77 percent of Illinois public highschool students graduating, the Golden AppleFoundation recognizes that high quality teachers areneeded to raise the graduation rate, which ultimatelyaffects Illinois’ economic conditions.

Law SchoolsThe Kirkland & Ellis Foundation makes donations toleading law schools around the nation and the world.The contributions fund endowed law chairs,sponsorships, minority scholarships and public schoolfellowships. In 2010, the Kirkland & Ellis Foundationcontributed or pledged funds to numerous lawschools.

Manhattan Beach EducationFoundationThe Manhattan Beach Education Foundation (MBEF)raises money to improve and enhance the educationalprograms provided in Manhattan Beach publicschools. State funding for education in California isinadequate for many basic programs and insufficientto fund enrichment programs. MBEF relies ondonations from organizations such as Kirkland tosupport teachers, counselors and other educatorswho might otherwise be eliminated from schools.

Working in the SchoolsWorking in the Schools (WITS) is focused onincreasing the reading proficiency and learningcapacity of low-income and minority students inChicago Public Schools. WITS’ Power Lunch programmatches corporate volunteers with students.Throughout the school year, volunteers visitclassrooms to read to students on a weekly basis.The program, founded in 1991, now serves more than2,500 students in 28 elementary schools with thesupport of more than 1,400 volunteers.

Asian Pacific American LegalResource CenterThe Asian Pacific American Legal Resource Center(APALRC) advocates for justice for the Asian Americancommunity in the District of Columbia, Maryland andNorthern Virginia. Particularly, APALRC works to breakdown the language and cultural barriers that preventquality legal services from reaching the AsianAmerican community. It does so through anexperienced staff of attorneys, paralegals and trainedlegal interpreters.

Immigration EqualityImmigration Equality fights for equality under U.S.immigration law for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgenderand HIV-positive individuals. Its membership hasgrown to more than 10,000 nationwide since itsfounding in 1994. Immigration Equality strives tocreate a better understanding of immigration law andLGBT issues within these communities throughoutreach, advocacy and information sharing.

National Black Law StudentsAssociationThe National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA)is a nationwide organization formed to advance theneeds and goals of black law students and accomplishchange in the legal community. NBLSA works towardthis mission through legislative advocacy, careerguidance, support for prospective law students andvoice protection. It is the largest student-runorganization in the United States, with more than 6,000members and more than 200 chapters.

National Latina/o Law StudentAssociationThe National Latina/o Law Student Association(NLLSA) is a student-run organization that focuses onaddressing legal issues in the Latina/o community.NLLSA has chapters at law schools all across theUnited States and works with the local communitiesthrough outreach programs and service projects. Thegoal of these programs is to teach young Latina/oadults to strengthen their understanding of the lawand to motivate them to pursue a legal career.

New York Asian Women’s CenterThe New York Asian Women’s Center (NYAWC) wasfounded in 1982 by a group of volunteers from theAsian community who recognized that Asianimmigrant women had nowhere to turn when facedwith domestic violence. NYAWC’s services havegrown from an emergency hotline with limited hours totwo 24-hour shelters with capacity for 40 beds.NYAWC relies on donations from organizations suchas Kirkland to provide food, counseling and shelter tohundreds of battered women each year.

Barts and The London CharityBarts and The London Charity is dedicated to raisingfunds for new health care, medical research andeducation to improve the life quality of Londoners andbeyond. Over the past nine years, they have raisedmore than £150 million via grants and fundraising.Three local hospitals — St. Bartholomew’s (London’soldest hospital), The Royal London and The LondonChest — benefit from The London Charity, enablingthem to continue providing patients with the best carepossible.

Foundation for the Study of InfantDeathsThe Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths (FSID)is the United Kingdom’s largest funder of medicalresearch into sudden infant death. The charity isaimed at preventing unexpected deaths in infancy andpromoting infant health. FSID relies on donations suchas those from the Kirkland & Ellis Foundation to fundresearch projects, and offer networks of support andtraining for families.

Impetus TrustImpetus Trust uses a unique model of long-term,hands-on venture philanthropy to increase theeffectiveness of the many charities it supports. TheTrust selects groups that benefit the less fortunate

and works with these groups to develop funding andexpertise. Charities and social enterprises supportedby Impetus have increased their income by more than30 percent a year and increased the number of peoplethey help by an average of 40 percent a year.

Maggie’s Cancer Caring CentresMaggie’s Cancer Caring Centres offer a network ofcancer support centers in Great Britain. With 13centres across the United Kingdom and two overseas,the centres serve as a sanctuary for cancer patientsand those who care about them. The organization,which was founded by a cancer victim’s husband,offers emotional and social support, information andadvice.

The London Legal Support TrustThe London Legal Support Trust supports volunteeragencies that offer free legal advice to disadvantagedmembers of society. The Trust supports servicesacross a multitude of legal areas, includingharassment, housing and employee benefits. Fundsare raised through various events around the city,including the London Legal Walk. In May, Kirklandattorneys and staff joined 4,500 other participants inthe 10-kilometer walk, which raised more than£400,000.
