4 With a load of experience coming back for the 2010-11 season, Park’s Men’s Basketball team

will seek an AMC title with 10 returning players from last year’s squad which made it to the second round of the 2010 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship. Head men’s basketball coach Jason Kline understands his team is filled to the brim with experience, however it is tem-pered with the notion that to start, the non-conference schedule is littered with talent-ed teams. “Everyone is good,” Kline said. “I never want to go in to the conference playing a schedule knowing that we’re going to be 10-2. If I know that, then I’m not doing my job to challenge these guys. And that won’t get them ready for conference. By us playing the schedule we did last year and the toughness of the schedule this year I think it gets us ready for the AMC.” The approach proved to be a winning formula in the previ-ous season as the Pirates had a slow start because of stiff competition from non-con-ference opponents which helped the team come to-gether later on in confer-ence play. “Last year we started off 0-4,” Kline said. “Then all of a sudden we figured out defen-sively what we were trying to do. I really thought we got after it and did some good things. I think we did some good things early on in those four losses too, but we didn’t have everyone on the same page.” With the departure of key leaders from last season’s team, Kline is looking for players to step up and take his team and guide it through the schedule. The Pirates lose not only an All-American in Herschel Rodgers, but also another first-team all-conference per-former in Terrell Dyer and a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete, Jeremy Voorhees. Rodgers led the team in scoring at 15.3 points per game and rebounding with 7.2 boards per game, while Dyer also aver-aged double figures, posting 10.9 points per game and knocking down 32 buckets from outside the arc. “We have a lot of returners and we have experience back,” Kline said. “But at the

same time we lost two very good players that had good years for us last year and they were leaders for us. Every year you have someone that you don’t think that will step up gets the job done and then there will be a leader out there somewhere. We just have to find that and then put that play-er or players in the best position possible.” Finding the personnel is step No. 1 for Kline and his staff, and finding players to emerge into leadership roles every team leans on throughout the season is the step that proves to be the most challenging. The Pirates do return four players that

saw starting time at points during the 2009-10 season, including the team’s two leading shot blockers in Kyle Rausch and Juston Hairston. The 6-foot-10 Rausch blocked 22

shots and averaged 6.3 re-bounds per game, get-

ting started after the holiday break in

January and a v e r a g i n g nine points per con-test. H a i r -

ston had 23 blocked shots and aver-aged 7.3 points with 3.1 rebounds per game. In addition to Hairston and Rausch down low,

the Pirates expect con-tributions from junior

Vince Langkamp and seniors Travis Fairley, Eduardo Quintero and Jordan White in the paint, while

the perimeter re-

turns seven that saw time last year. Tyler Price was the team’s leader from above the arc last season, knocking down 56 baskets from 3-point range, while Der-rick Howard was Park’s anchor at the point, collecting 93 steals and 86 assists. Philip Garnett also returns for his se-nior season after backing up Howard at the point, and Goldeng Deng returns after starting in 30 of the team’s 33 games and averaging 7.6 points per game from the wing. Reco Anderson backed Deng on the wing, averaging 6.3 points and making four starts in 32 games played, and in 2010-11, Rudy Harper and Mark Halsell should see more playing time in a deep backcourt. Park’s backcourt will also get a boost from two newcomers, as Melvin Gatson (KCKCC) and Wardell Satterwhite (Col-lege of Lake County) will add to the team’s guard depth, and Cooper Bayiha, who transferred from William Jewell, is a 6-foot-7 center that will help Park in the paint. “It’s not going to be an easy job but we only have a few guys to plug in now,” Kline said. “When it comes to everyone else and what we’ve done so far it’s a refresher course from last year. We have been able to break things down and really focus in some areas that I think we can improve.” Moving beyond the opening leg of the season, the AMC schedule should be more a challenge with last year’s success. “We’ve talked about this from day one,” Kline said. “One of the first days we were on the floor with conditioning I told the guys congratulations. Congratulations on last year because it was a great year for us, you did a lot of good things. Saying that, last season is over and done with. This is a new year and everyone is working for the same goal to win every game and finish at the top of their conference with the hopes of qualifying for the national tournament.”

Derrick Howard (above) and Philip Garnett (pictured) return at the point guard position, making it one of the deepest spots on Park’s 2010-11 roster. In all, the Pirates’ back-court returns seven players, including Tyler Price, the team’s leading 3-point shooter and Goldeng Deng, who started in 30 of the Pirates’ 33 games in 2009-10.

Park University is a second-year member in the American Midwest Conference, joining in the 2009-10

school year, rejoining the league after nine years of membership in the MCAC and as an NAIA Independent in basketball. Park previously held membership in the AMC from 1993 to 2000, exiting the league fol-lowing the spring semester in 2000. “This is a great partnership for Park University and the AMC,” said Park Uni-versity Director of Athletics, Claude Eng-lish. “In the ever-changing landscape of collegiate athletics, it is important to have strong alliances within a conference for all of our athletic programs. The AMC gives us one unified conference home for our programs, and it also provides a familiarity with our past history in the league.” Park is one of nine AMC member in-stitutions, joining Columbia College, Han-nibal-LaGrange University, Harris-Stowe State University, McKendree University, Missouri Baptist University, Stephens Col-lege, William Woods University and Wil-liams Baptist College. “Park’s location and proximity to the NAIA National Headquarters will also pro-vide a boost for our conference. This was a unanimous decision by our executive com-mittee,” Commissioner Lowell Pitzer said. The AMC sponsors championships in 13 different sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s track and field, and volley-ball. The purpose of the American Midwest Conference is to promote the positive ide-als and objectives of athletics, to provide an organization of colleges and universities with similar foundations to engage in ath-letic contests on an equal basis, to serve as a forum to formulate and solve common problems, to enhance and preserve athlet-ics in their true perspective and to promote athletics in an academic environment.

Park University played McKendree University three times last season, including two games that directly resulted in American Midwest Conference championships in Lebanon, Ill. In February, Park traveled to McKendree to play for the AMC regular-season title and in March, the two teams met for the AMC tournament championship. In January, the Pirates and Bearcats played in Parkville, in the College Fanz NAIA Game of the Week.

JASON KLINEHEAD MEN’S BASKETBALL COACH • 6TH SEASON • 231-149 (91-65 AT PArK)

American Midwest Conference Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year in 2009-10, Jason Kline enters his sixth season as head men’s basketball coach at Park

University with a 91-65 (.583) record, taking the Pirates to two NAIA national tournaments in five seasons, in-cluding the 2010 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship last season, when the Pirates advanced to the tournament’s second round. Kline also claims a pair of NAIA Division I Inde-pendent Coach of the Year awards, one for his coaching job in the 2006-07 season when the Pirates also made a second round appearance in the 2007 NAIA national tournament. He coached his 14th NAIA All-American in 2009-10, as Herschel Rodgers landed on the NAIA’s third team, marking the fourth-straight year with an All-American in a Park uniform under Kline’s watch. Kline’s players’ performance on the court is matched by their accolades in the classroom, including 2010 Daktron-ics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete Jeremy Voor-hees, who led a group of seven academic all-conference honorees. Park’s 2009-10 campaign was one of the most successful in its men’s basketball history, as the Pirates reached 23 wins to become the fourth team since the 1961-62 season to post at least 20 wins and advance to an NAIA na-tional tournament. The season also marked the Pirates’ first back in the American Midwest Confer-ence, and Kline promptly led the team to a second-place finish behind nationally ranked McKendree University, going

12-2 in the conference season. Seven of Park’s 10 losses in 2009-10 came to NAIA national tournament teams, including one in the tournament to Biola

University, and two more were to NCAA Division II programs. In 2008-09, Kline had the Pirates within a game of playing for the 2009 NAIA Division I Inde-pendent Tournament title, falling in the semifinals to Crichton

at Tullis Arena in Orangeburg, S.C. The 2008-09 season also marked the second-straight 16-

win campaign for the Pirates, who finished 16-14 with two Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes and one All-American in Jon Meriweather, who was named to the NAIA’s Second Team as well as the Preseason First Team distributed by Basketball Times. On Senior Day, the Pirates made it three-straight seasons with a win over crosstown ri-val Rockhurst University, drumming the Hawks 79-58. In all, Park beat two NCAA Division II opponents and

took another to the wire, testing NCAA Division II power Southwest Baptist in late November. Park played 23 of its 30 games on the season against NCAA Division II and ranked NAIA oppo-nents, posting eight wins over ranked NAIA op-

ponents, including six wins over teams who advanced to NAIA national tournaments. Kline posted 16 wins in the 2007-08

season, advancing to the semifinals of the 2008 NAIA Independent Region Tournament in Orangeburg, S.C. Kline also coached an All-American who was named NAIA Player of the Week at Park for the second-straight year in 2007-08, as Meriweather earned three All-Amer-ica distinctions as well as two national weekly honors in

2007-08. In 2006-07, Brandon Voorhees was named to the All-

America squad in addition to earning national player of the

Page 15: 2010-11 Park Men's Basketball Media Guide

13

week honors, also being named Basketball Times Co-Player of the Year at the close of the season. During the 2007-08 season, Meriweather earned his first All-America distinction, and Kline’s 2007-08 squad also produced three Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes. The 2006-07 season marked one of the greatest single-season turnarounds in NAIA Men’s Basketball History, as the Pirates went from a 10-22 record in 2005-06 to an .813 winning percentage during the NAIA tournament run. In addition to the turnaround and tournament appearance, Park also recorded its first win over an NCAA Division I school under Kline’s watch – a 103-99 exhibition triumph over UMKC in November. Kline came to Park after seven successful seasons at Indiana Tech University in Fort Wayne, Ind., where he led the Warriors to a 140-84 record during his tenure. In 2004-05, he guided Indiana Tech to a school record 29 wins (eight losses) and the school’s second straight NAIA Division II National Tournament appear-ance, advancing to the Elite Eight. Over his last three seasons at Indiana Tech, Kline’s teams av-eraged over 26 wins per year. In each of the last four seasons, his teams finished the regular season in the top 35 of the final NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball ratings, including a ranking of eighth in 2003-04 and 15th in 2004-05. Kline, who was named the WHAC (Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference) Coach of the Year in 2003-04, led Indiana Tech to a regular season conference title in 2003-04 and to the WHAC Tournament Championship in 2004-05. Individually, Kline’s players have accumulated a multitude of honors. Seventeen student-athletes have been named NAIA Scholar-Athletes under Kline, while 14 have earned athletic All-America honors. Fifty-eight players have been tabbed Academic All-Conference, along with 29 All-Conference performers. Kline, who has an overall coaching record of 192-125 over 10 seasons, started his coaching career as an assistant at Indiana Tech from 1993-95, where he earned his undergraduate degree in business administration in 1994. Kline then spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Kan-sas Wesleyan University, in Salina, Kan., which is where he com-pleted his M.B.A. in 1998. He and his wife, Jolina, a former wom-en’s basketball student-athlete at Kansas Wesleyan, have two sons, Jacob and Jackson.

2009-10 TEAM NOTES• The 2009-10 Park men’s basketball team was the fourth in school history to reach 20 wins and posted the fourth-most wins in school history. The Pirates also advanced to their fourth NAIA national tournament and their first since 2006-07. Like 2006-07, Park made it to the NAIA’s second round.

• Park University head coach Jason Kline collected his fourth coach-of-the-year designa-tion in his career and his first in the American Midwest Conference. It was the third time Kline had been named a conference coach of the year at Park, earning the Independent Coach of the Year award in both 2005-06 and 2006-07.

• Park had two all-conference honorees - Herschel Rodgers and Terrell Dyer - and seven players made the AMC All-Academic Team. Rodgers averaged 15.3 points and 7.2 re-bounds per game in 2009-10, while Dyer also averaged double figures, scoring more than 10 points per game.

• Rodgers went on to be named Third-Team All-America in NAIA Division I Men’s Basket-ball, marking the fourth-straight year with an All-American from the Park University men’s basketball program.

• Jeremy Voorhees, one of Park’s seven academic all-conference honorees, was also named to the NAIA men’s basketball Daktronics Scholar-Athlete team, and Philip Garnett was named a Pattison Champions of Character Scholar in conjunction with the 2010 Buffalo-Funds NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. Garnett was one of three players selected from 32 eligible for the award at the tournament’s tip-off banquet.

• Of Park’s 10 losses, seven came to NAIA tournament teams, including one in the na-tional tournament to Biola. After an 0-4 start to the season, Park’s only remaining non-conference losses in the regular season came to NCAA Division II opponents - Missouri Western State University and Rockhurst University - at the Harvesters Classic in Kansas City. After the losses to MWSU and Rockhurst, the only teams to beat Park for the remain-der of the 2009-10 season were McKendree University and Biola University, both top 10 teams in the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Top 25 Coaches Poll.

• Park turned it on in conference play in 2009-10, beginning the conference season with a 94-68 win at Columbia College. Just two of Park’s 14 conference games ended in a final score with less than a 10-point margin, including a 68-65 win at Harris-Stowe State Uni-versity and a six-point loss to McKendree at home. Park recorded 10 of its 12 conference victories by 20 or more points, and its only other win by less than 20 was an 80-62 win over Hannibal-LaGrange College in February. Park also won a pair of conference tourna-ment games by double figures over Williams Baptist College and Harris-Stowe.

• The Pirates were ranked in the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll for seven-straight weeks, making their debut on Jan. 18 at No. 25. Park reached as high as No. 21 on Feb. 22. Park was the 22nd seed in the NAIA tournament, taking on Georgetown Col-lege in the tournament’s first round.

Park University senior forward Her-schel Rodgers scored a game-high 24 points and added nine rebounds

Wednesday night in the opening round of the 2010 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship, helping push the Pirates past Georgetown College (Ky.), 83-75, at historic Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City. “Herschel is a warrior,” said head coach Jason Kline. “He got some big rebounds for us and went strong to the basket. That’s all you can ask out of him. He is a competi-tor. I’m very proud of him and the rest of our guys.” Park (23-9) also had 17 points and nine boards from junior center Kyle Rausch, while senior guard Terrell Dyer added 11 points, and the Pirates survived four Georgetown Tigers in double figures, led by 23 points from Vic Moses. The loss end-ed Georgetown’s 2009-10 season at 26-7. For Park, it was a big second half that provided the game’s final surge, as Park outscored Georgetown 51-35 over the game’s second 20 minutes. The Pirates started the second half on a 10-2 run, tying the score at 42 with 16:53 left on a hook-shot by Rausch, and after Georgetown got a bucket to regain the lead, Dyer nailed a jumper at the 15:00 mark from the free throw line to again knot the game at 44. Georgetown would get the next four points, forcing a Park timeout with 13:51 to play, but Park answered after the stop-page, getting free throws from Dyer, fol-lowed by a fade-away baseline jumper from Rodgers with 12:15 to tie it at 48. Reco Anderson wrestled the lead back

with 11:52 to play, hitting the back end of a two-shot chance at the line, and with 11:25 remaining, Rodgers took an inbound pass from Dyer to score off the glass, and after drawing a foul, he converted a free throw to put the Pirates up 52-48. Georgetown fought back to tie it at 54, but with 9:05 left, Rodgers coaxed his de-fender off of the floor and after making a tough basket, he completed another 3-point play to put Park up 62-56. Rodgers later made it a seven-point game near 7:00, go-ing all the way to the basket, through the Tiger defense, for a lay-up to make it 68-61.

With 5:25 left, the lead moved to double-digits when Derrick Howard scored at the basket to make it 72-62, but the Tigers an-swered with a 4-0 run to cut the lead back to six near 4:00, getting a runner in the lane from Matt Walls to make it 72-66. George-town managed to cut further into the lead with 2:30 left, 75-72. Park went on to secure victory over the final two minutes, finishing on an 8-3 run, including 4-of-6 from the foul line in the game’s final minute. In the first half, the Pirates opened on a 5-0 run, getting an early three from Gold-eng Deng with the shot clock expiring, fol-

lowed by a put-back by Rausch to put the Pirates up five. Dyer followed with a basket two minutes in, and the Pirates held the Ti-gers off of the scoreboard until the 15:25 mark in the first when Hollis Giles earned a reverse lay-in to make it 7-2. Georgetown managed to tie it with 13:28 left, capping a 9-2 run with a basket and foul-shot by Moses to make it 9-9. Johnne Hamilton gave the Tigers a lead near the 13:00 mark, hitting two free throws to make it 11-9, and Giles scored with 12:16 left, getting a steal and lay-up to make it 13-9. The Tigers extended the lead to 10 with 8:43 left in the first half when Moses went up-and-under to make it 26-16, and after Georgetown got another bucket to make it 28-16, Dyer stopped the bleeding, hitting two from the free-throw line to return the GC lead to 10 with the clock under 8:00. Park moved the lead back to single dig-its with 5:29 left in the half when Eduardo Quintero capitalized on a steal and fast-break bucket, cutting the lead to 31-22, and on Park’s next possession, Quintero finished on a miss by Rausch to cut it to seven, 31-24. Anderson struck from the free throw line as the clock expired in the half, sending Georgetown to the locker room up 40-32. Vincent Crutcher and Giles each add-ed 11 points for Georgetown, while Walls scored 10 in the game. Park outrebounded Georgetown, 44-29, and in the second half, Park was 64.3-percent on 18-of-28 from the floor, leading to 30-of-63 in the game, 47.6-percent.

The Park University men’s basketball team made things interesting in the game’s final two minutes Friday night

in the second round of the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship, but the Pirates were un-able to dig out of a hole established by a big first-half run from Biola University, who came away with an 80-64 victory at Munici-pal Auditorium in Kansas City. Park (23-10) was led by senior Her-schel Rodgers, who scored 15 points in the game, while Juston Hairston added 14, Goldeng Deng scored 11, and Terrell Dyer posted 10 in the final game of the season for the 2009-10 Pirates. Biola (29-5) and Park each grabbed 35 rebounds, but it was a big shooting night for the Eagles that secured a trip to the quarterfinals, going 27-of-48 from the floor, 56.3-percent, including 7-of-14 from be-yond the arc. Biola’s defense was also ef-fective, holding Park to 25 first-half points and 35.9-percent shooting in the game. After trailing by 18 at the half, the Pi-rates opened the second period on a 5-0 run, cutting Biola’s lead to 43-30, but after back-to-back buckets from Rodgers kept it manageable at 51-37, Biola used a used a 14-0 run to take a 65-40 lead midway through the second half. Hairston buried a pair of threes and Philip Garnett added another as the clock crossed 7:00, getting Park back within 67-48, and with 5:30 left, Rodgers poked a Biola pass away and finished with a lay-up to make it 67-50. Park would later cut the lead to 69-55, and with 1:02 left in the game, Dyer nailed a three from the right wing to make it 72-62, but Biola finished on

an 8-2 run, advancing to Saturday’s quar-terfinal game against Oklahoma Baptist, scheduled for 6 p.m. The Pirates got out to a quick start in the game, getting baskets from Rodgers and Deng to take a 4-0 lead in the opening two minutes, but a 6-0 Biola run, capped by a Nate Rakestraw jumper, gave the Eagles a 6-4 lead with 17:02 in the first. Deng answered with a three out of a Park stoppage, giving the Pirates a 7-6 advantage, and with 13:20 in the half, he struck again, dropping a pair of foul shots to make it 14-12. The Eagles would respond, though, scoring the next five points, includ-ing a triple from Rakestraw that forced

another Park time out with 12:20 left and Biola up 17-14. Hairston came off the bench to tie it near 11:00, draining a three to make it 17-17, but after Park again tied it at 20 on a sec-ond three by Hairston, Biola finished the half on a 23-5 run, taking a 43-25 to inter-mission. Biola shot 57.1-percent in the first half, including 23 first-half points by Rocky Hampton, who finished with a game- and career-high 32. Clay Martin also had a ca-reer-high for Biola, scoring 16 in the game, while Marlon King finished with 12 and Rakestraw had 11. “They did a good job, and their game plan was to protect the paint. They did

that,” said head coach Jason Kline. “They made us shoot jumpers which we don’t like to do a whole lot. If we have been incon-sistent on one thing it’s been shooting the basketball from the perimeter and it was a good game plan. My hats off to them, they have a great coach and they have a great program. They aren’t ranked that high for nothing. If you can’t knock shots down, they won’t give you many extra opportuni-ties and that hurt us early in the game. I’m proud of what this team accomplished after the start we had, and it’s all those guys in that locker room, especially our three se-niors.”

He was Park’s “Teacher of the Year” in 1978, and in his time as basketball coach and athletic director, he also coached Park’s men’s soccer team and oversaw a men’s tennis program for a few years in the 1960s. The 1990-91 Park men’s basketball team (left) made the school’s first-ever appearance in the NAIA tournament, winning the District 16 Championship before falling in the first round of the NAIA national tournament at Kemper Arena in Kansas City. Led by current Director of Athletics and former head men’s basketball coach Claude English, the 1997-98 Park College men’s basketball team ad-vanced farther than any Park team in school history in the NAIA tournament, which was held at the Mabee Center on the campus of Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla. The Pirates reached the national semifinals in 1998. Park’s first two NAIA All-Americans in men’s basketball - Beville Taitte and Walter Bethea - helped lay the foundation for the 1997-98 team’s run to the national semifinals. Bethea still owns the school record for single-game points with 44.

Brandon Voorhees was one of two NAIA All-Americans for the Pirates in the 2006-07 season, leading the country in scoring at 25.2 points per game. Voorhees was a First-Team NAIA All-American and was twice named NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. A transfer from Central Michigan University, Voorhees played just one season in a Park University uniform, but it was a memorable campaign, as he helped lead the team to the 2007 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship tournament at Municipal Auditorium. Voorhees’ brother, Jeremy, followed Brandon to Park and was a 2009-10 Daktronics-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete.

Kevin Nelson was Park’s second-leading scorer in the 2006-07 season, but he also ranked third in NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball in scoring, trans-ferring to the Pirates from Central Michigan University. Nelson was a Third-Team NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball All-American, helping the Pirates to the 2007 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship Tournament. He averaged more than 19 points per game for the Pirates in 2006-07, helping the team to its second-most wins in school history, a 25-7 mark that was later amended to 26-6 to reflect a forfeit victory received from Robert Morris College, a team that made the NAIA national semifinals that season.

Park University calls Parkville, Mo., and the Greater Kansas City area home, offering students the features

of both small-town life and the flashing lights of a big city. With a population of more than 4,000, Parkville allows students the small-town lifestyle and tightly knit community often times associated with small college athlet-ics and the NAIA. Originally a trading post on the Mis-souri River, Parkville grew as Kansas City boomed in the late 1800s, which included the founding of Park University. Both the

University and the city get their names from Col. George S. Park, who played a key role in the early development of the area. Today, Parkville’s historic downtown district, coupled with new shopping areas to the north and east gives Park University students two great entertainment opportu-nities within the area. Parkville sits within the Northland of the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area, which encompasses 15 counties, nine of which are in Missouri and six across the state line in Kansas. The Northland is lo-cally referred to as “north of the river.” Con-

tained wholly within Missouri, it en-compasses portions of Clay County including the northern half of Kansas City, Mo., and the cities of Parkville, Liberty, North Kansas City and Glad-stone. Kansas City is situated at the con-fluence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers, often referred to as Kaw Point, straddling the state border between the two states. The Kansas City Met-ropolitan Statistical Area, anchored by Kansas City, Mo., is the 29th larg-est in the United States, with an esti-mated population just over 2 million. A tradition-rich city known for its barbecue and storied sports his-tory, Kansas City is currently home to Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals, the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League, Major League Soccer’s Kansas

City Wizards and the Kansas Speedway, which hosts two NASCAR and IRL events throughout the year including one Nextel Cup Series event in the fall. Kansas City is also home to the Kan-sas City T-Bones independent league baseball franchise and the Kansas City Ex-plorers of World Team Tennis. The Sprint Center and the Power & Light District in the downtown area is one of the region’s top entertainment areas. The Sprint Center also houses the College Basketball Experi-ence, which includes the College Basket-ball Hall of Fame. A few blocks away sits Municipal Auditorium, home to the Buf-falo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basket-ball Tournament. In 2010, Park University made its second appearance in four sea-sons and its fourth overall appearances in the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship, beat-ing Georgetown (Ky.) College in the first round, 83-75, before falling to Biola (Calif.) University in the second round. Addition-ally, the National Association of Intercolle-giate Athletics moved its offices downtown in the summer of 2007. Kansas City is also known for its his-toric shopping districts, including Westport and the Country Club Plaza, which is one of the world’s largest outdoor shopping areas designed for motor-vehicle traffic. Commonly referred to as “The Plaza,” it is home to one of the nation’s largest holiday light displays between Thanksgiving and January. In the Northland, Zona Rosa has

become a popular shopping district, while Town Center and The Legends at Village West keep shoppers occupied in Kansas.

CLAUDE W. ENGLISHDIrECTOr OF ATHLETICS • 15TH YEAr

Claude English is in his 15th year as Park University’s Director of Athletics, serving in the role since Janu-ary of 1996.

Prior to 2010-11, English was honored for his service as an athletics administrator by being inducted into the McLendon Minority Athletics Administrators Hall of Fame, June 23, 2010, in Anaheim, Calif., representing the NAIA in a group of seven individuals honored by the John McLendon Minority Scholarship Foundation. The Foun-dation supports the John McLendon Memorial Minority Post-graduate Scholarship Awards and is presented to senior-level minority students who intend to pursue a graduate degree in athletics administration. English was joined in the 2010 McLendon Hall of Fame in-duction class by Percy Bates, Bernie Bickerstaff, Howard Gen-try, Sr., Michael Haynes, Rafer Johnson and Don Newcombe, while a second group of Pioneer Award winners was also hon-ored. That group included Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez, Ernie Davis, Mike Garrett, Tom Goss, Dan Guerrero, Charles Harris, Tommy Hawkins, Kim Ng, Fritz Pollard, Burl Toler and Tyrone Willingham. In the spring, English will be inducted into the Chattahoochee Valley Sports Hall of Fame, in his home town of Columbus, Ga. English began his affiliation with Park University in the 1992-93 men’s basketball season, coaching the Pirates through the end of the 2004-05 campaign. For his final 10 sea-sons at the helm of the Park men’s basketball program, English also assumed the duties of Director of Athletics, a position he will continue into his 15th year in the 2010-11 academic year. During his tenure as Park’s Director of Athletics, English has guided the addition of two spring sports – baseball and women’s golf – in addition to facility upgrades throughout the department of athletics. Park’s facility upgrades under English’s watch began with the 1,500-seat Julian Field, home to Park University men’s and women’s soccer, followed by the 1,200-seat Breckon Sports Cen-ter, constructed in 2000 to become the home of Park University’s men’s and women’s basketball programs, as well as its men’s and women’s volleyball programs. Breckon Sports Center houses ad-ministrative offices and two domes – one for competition and one for practice. Recent upgrades to Park’s softball and baseball facilities have

also come under English’s watch, including new dugouts at the Park University Softball Com-plex, as well as new bleachers and game-scoring facilities at Comfort Field, the home of Park University baseball. English is the winningest coach in Park University men’s basketball history, compiling 182 wins to push his overall win

total to 227. From 1981 to 1984, English was the head men’s basketball coach at his alma

mater, Rhode Island, where he was named Atlan-tic-10 Conference Coach of the Year in the 1981-82 season. His coaching tenure at Park was highlighted by

the Pirates’ run to the NAIA Division I Men’s Basket-ball Tournament semifinal round in 1997-98, which ended with a school-record mark of 27-8. English was honored at the national tournament with the Charles A. Krigel Award for outstanding sportsman-ship, while his team was awarded the Dr. James Naismith-Emil S. Liston Sportsmanship Award for the team recognized as most sportsmanlike at the tourney. After a stellar collegiate playing career for Christian College in Dallas, Texas, and the Univer-sity of Rhode Island, English was selected in the NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers where he played the 1970-71 season. English also played in the Eastern Basketball Association for the Hartford

Capitals, the affiliate team for the Philadelphia 76ers. In 1973-74, English won the Eastern Basketball Association Championship with the Capitals. He was a three-year captain at Hartford. As Director of Athletics at Park, the Pirates have captured 47 conference championships, and in each of his 14 previous sea-sons as athletics director, at least one Park program has advanced to NAIA postseason play each year. Also during his run as Director of Athletics, 77 student-athletes have been named NAIA All-Americans, and 161 student-athletes have earned Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete honors. In 2008-09, Park University’s department of athletics carried an overall grade point average better than 3.0, and the Pirates earned a school record seven NAIA scholar teams, marking more than half of the department’s programs posting a team GPA of 3.0 or better.

Breckon and comprised of two concrete, monolithic domes, Breckon Sports Center is home to Park University’s men’s and women’s volleyball contests, as well as men’s and women’s basketball contests, in its West Dome, while the East Dome serves as a practice facil-ity for both volleyball programs as well as baseball, softball and soccer if weather forc-es the Pirates inside. The East Dome’s floor surface is a sport-court material marked for volleyball, while the West Dome is marked for both volley-ball and basketball and includes seating for more than 1,000 spectators. In 2008-09, the Pirate volleyball and basketball programs combined for 25 wins on Park’s home court, which hosted the NAIA Men’s Volleyball National Invitational Tournament for the second-straight year. In 2009-10, Park’s basketball and volleyball programs claimed 22 victories inside Breckon Sports Center, including 11 by the men’s basketball program, which used its home-court advantage to finish second in the AMC, earning a trip to the 2010 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship. Breckon Sports Center also hosted a nationally televised event in 2010, when the College Fanz Game of the Week traveled to Parkville on Jan. 30 for the basketball games between Park and McKendree. In addition to serving as home to four Park athletic programs, Breckon Sports Center also houses the administrative offices for Park University athletics, including office space for administrative staff and both volleyball and basketball programs.
