For the first time in a decade, Park University will again know conference basketball, and the Pirates will have to tackle a schedule of 14

non-conference and 14 league games with a roster of eight returners and 11 incoming players. Park has been an NAIA Division I independent basketball program throughout the tenure of fifth-year head coach Jason Kline, but in 2009-10, the Pirates will re-enter the American Midwest Confer-ence, the same league the school departed nine sea-sons ago. In their first season back as an AMC member, the Pirates must replace seven seniors from a 2008-09 roster that went 16-14, ending the year in the 2009 A.I.I. semifinals with a four-point loss to Crichton in Orangeburg, S.C. Park’s eight returning players will be looked upon as leaders to begin the year, including a pair of starters from last season. Herschel Rodgers is one of only three seniors on the roster, and Rodgers is the only senior who cracked the starting lineup last year, playing in all 30 games for the Pirates with 28 starts. Rodgers averaged 11 points and six rebounds per game last season, leading all returners in both categories. He also led the team in steals, pick-ing opponents pockets 46 times while also collecting 10 blocked shots. Reco Anderson also returns to the starting five as a sophomore after averaging 8.1 points per game in his freshman season, including 32-of-77 from above the 3-point arc. Anderson’s production picked up as the year moved forward, averaging 20.9 minutes per game with 11 double-figure outings, including a career-high 22 points in a win at Peru State. Rodgers also produced a career-high 21 points against Peru State, and during the year, he piled up 17 double-figure scoring games with three dou-ble-doubles. “We’ll rely heavily on our eight returners to lead us, especially those two guys who started last year,” Kline said. “There’s going to be a learning curve for the new guys with all the stuff we do both offensively and defen-

sively, but it has to come quick if we’re going to be successful. Our returners really have to lead the way and help get the newcomers ready for the sched-ule in front of us.” The Pirates also return Philip Garnett, Tyler Price, Jeremy Voorhees, Vince Langkamp and Eduardo Quintero off of last season’s roster, and Ter-rell Dyer comes back to the Park men’s basketball program after sitting out the last two seasons. Dyer last appeared for the Pirates during the first half of the 2006-07 campaign, helping the Pirates to 12 wins in 16 games prior to the holiday break. Dyer averaged more than 12 points in those 16 contests, and is listed as a senior on the 2009-10 roster. Voorhees is Park’s third senior after playing in two games last season, and the junior class is led by Garnett and Quintero, who both saw valuable minutes last season. Langkamp and Price join Anderson in the class of re-turning sophomores. Park’s newcomer-group includes six junior college transfers from four different states. Michael and Brandon Ferguson, twins from Bay Shore, N.Y., attended and played for Nassau Community College last season, both averaging more than five rebounds per game inside, while Derrick How-

ard and Travis Fairley have also traveled the same road to Parkville, coming out of Alexandria, La., and Kansas City Kansas Community College. Fairly will play in the post and on the wing for the Pirates after averaging 15 points per game at KCK last season, while Howard will fight for playing time at the point guard position after av-eraging 7.5 points and 4.5 assists last year. Goldeng Deng, a transfer from Southeast Community College (Neb.) and Stone Moun-tain, Ga., will provide depth in the backcourt after posting better than seven points per game a year ago, and Jordan White rounds out the junior college class, coming to Park from Otero Com-munity College. A product of Denver, Colo., White averaged five points and five rebounds per game last season at OCC. In addition to the junior college transfers, one freshman will also get his first taste of four-year college basketball this season, as Blayke Ladd comes to the Pirates from Edmond Memorial High School in Edmond, Okla., where he broke the school record for assists in 2009. “It’s going to be tough for the new guys to adjust, but they’re a talented group,” Kline said. “We’re going to go at it in practice, and if they do all the right things, they’ll be ready when it’s time to play. With the schedule we play, we have to bring intensity every time out, and we’ll really rely on these guys to step up when we need them.” Park’s roster will also feature three NCAA Division I transfers in Juston Hairston (Western Michigan), Mark Halsell (Kentucky) and Kyle Rausch (Missouri State), as well as a trans-fer from an NAIA Division II program, Rudy Harper, who played last season at Mount Marty Col-lege. Harper was Mount Marty’s leading scor-er last season at 11.7 points per game while also leading

the Great Plains Athletic Conference in steals with 77 and 2.48 per game. Halsell played in six games for Billy Gillespie’s Kentucky team in 2008-09, helping the Wildcats to an NIT appear-ance, while Hairston appeared once for Western Michigan in a 71-58 win over Detroit. Rausch will not play for the Pirates until the second semester of the 2009-10 season, and at Missouri State, he was a two-sport athlete, play-ing both football and basketball for the Bears. In his last season on the basketball floor, Rausch appeared in 31 games, averaging 2.2 points per game. THE SCHEDULE The 2009-10 Park University men’s basket-ball schedule includes 10 games against national tournament qualifiers and a 14-game schedule in the American Midwest Conference, marking the Pirates’ first year back in the AMC since 1999-2000. Park will open the season at home on Nov. 3 against NAIA Division I National Tournament participant Central Methodist, who earned the second of three bids to the tournament from the HAAC last season. CMU is also the first of four-straight HAAC

opponents to begin the 2009-10 season for Park, and the Pirates play seven of their first nine games in the non-conference schedule against HAAC teams.

The season continues at Mi-dAmerica Nazarene’s

Jeff Uphaus Clas-sic in Olathe Nov. 6-7, where the Pi-rates will take on Avila before play-ing MNU, who advanced to the NAIA’s Fab Four last season. Park returns home Nov. 10 for a Townsend Tro-

phy match-up with national tournament

qualifier William Jew-ell, followed by trip

south that pits the Pirates against classic co-hosts Central Bible and Evangel, Nov. 13-14, in Spring-

field, Mo.A trip to William Jewell completes the

season series with the Cardinals Nov. 17, followed by a two-game home-stand, be-

ginning Nov. 21 with Kansas Wesleyan. The Pirates also host MidAmerica Nazarene in the

two-game set, as the Pioneers visit Breckon

Reco Anderson (facing page) and Herschel Rod-gers (right) return as starters from the 2008-09 roster, while Philip Garnett (left) will add depth to the Pirate backcourt in the 2009-10 season.

The Pirates open the event on Nov. 27 against Missouri Western, who played for the MIAA tournament championship last season, fol-lowed by a Nov. 28 contest against Rockhurst, who qualified for the NCAA Division II National Tourna-ment last season. The Pirates went 2-1 against the tournament field last year, splitting the season series with Rockhurst and defeating Missouri Western in the only meeting be-tween the two programs in 2008-09. Park’s first-semester schedule wraps up at home on Dec. 1 against Peru State College, and the Pirates re-sume Jan. 4 at Kansas Wesleyan, in the team’s final non-conference tune-up at Mabee Arena in Salina, Kan. Missouri Baptist visits Breckon Sports Center in the AMC opener for both schools on Jan. 7, followed by a four-game road trip for the Pirates, beginning Jan. 9 at NAIA national runner-up and 2009 AMC tourna-ment champion Columbia. A pair games in Walnut Ridge, Ark., follow the trip to mid-Missouri, as the Pirates will take on Wil-

liams Baptist Friday, Jan. 15, and Saturday, Jan. 16, in back-to-back AMC contests. The road trip concludes Jan. 19 at league-rival Harris-Stowe State. Park’s next four games alternate between home and away, beginning Jan. 21 at home against William Woods, followed by a Jan. 23 road trip to Hannibal-LaGrange. Jan. 30, the Pirates return home to play AMC regular-season champion McKendree, and Feb-ruary begins on the road, at Missouri Baptist on Feb. 4. Columbia returns a conference game to Park on Feb. 6 at Breckon Sports Center, followed by the Pi-rates’ final non-conference game a week later when Park hosts Central Bible. Park will host Harris-Stowe State Feb. 16 before returning a trip to William Woods on Feb. 18, and the Pirates will celebrate senior night on Feb. 20 at home against Hannibal-LaGrange. The regular season concludes Feb. 27 at McKen-dree, followed by the AMC tournament, which begins on campus sites March 4 and continues with quarterfi-nals on March 6. Park University begins its first season back in the American Midwest Conference in the

2009-10 school year, rejoining the league after nine years of member-ship in the MCAC and as an NAIA Independent in basketball. Park previously held member-ship in the AMC from 1993 to 2000, exiting the league following the spring semester in 2000. “This is a great partnership for Park University and the AMC,” said Park University Director of Athletics Claude English. “In the ever-changing land-scape of collegiate athletics, it is important to have strong alliances within a conference for all of our athletic programs. The AMC gives us one unified conference home for our programs, and it also provides a familiarity with our past history in the league.” Park is one of nine AMC mem-ber institutions, joining Columbia College, Hannibal-LaGrange Col-lege, Harris-Stowe State University, McKendree University, Missouri Baptist University, Stephens Col-lege, William Woods University and Williams Baptist College. “The AMC looks forward to Park University rejoining the con-ference, and we know that Park will bring a lot to our league in the way of sponsored teams and qual-ity conference competition,” Lowell Pitzer, AMC Commissioner, said. “Park’s location and proximity to the NAIA National Headquar-ters will also provide a boost for our conference. This was a unanimous decision by our executive commit-tee, and we are excited for Park to come in next year.” The AMC sponsors champion-ships in 13 different sports: base-ball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s track and field, and vol-leyball. The purpose of the American Midwest Conference is to promote the positive ideals and objectives of athletics, to provide an organi-zation of colleges and universities with similar foundations to engage in athletic contests on an equal ba-sis, to serve as a forum to formulate and solve common problems, to enhance and preserve athletics in their true perspective and to pro-mote athletics in an academic envi-ronment.

JASON KLINEHead Men’s Basketball Coach, 5th SeasonOverall Record: 208-139 (10 Seasons)Record at Park: 68-55 (4 Seasons)Alma Mater: Indiana Tech, ‘94

Jason Kline is in his fifth season as the sideline gen-eral of the Park men’s basketball program, claim-ing two NAIA Division I Coach of the Year hon-

ors and one trip to the NAIA Sweet 16 in the 2006-07 season. In 2008-09, Kline had the Pirates within a game of playing for the 2009 NAIA Division I Independent Tournament title, falling in the semifinals to Crichton at Tullis Arena in Orangeburg, S.C. The 2008-09 season also marked the second-straight 16-win campaign for the Pirates, who fin-ished 16-14 with two Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Ath-letes and one All-American in Jon Meriweather, who was named to the NAIA’s Second Team as well as the Preseason First Team distributed by Basketball Times. On Senior Day, the Pirates made it three-straight sea-sons with a win over crosstown rival Rockhurst Uni-versity, drumming the Hawks 79-58. In all, Park beat two NCAA Division II oppo-nents and took another to the wire, testing NCAA Division II power Southwest Baptist in late November. Park played 23 of its 30 games on the season against NCAA Division II and ranked NAIA opponents, posting eight wins over ranked NAIA opponents, including six wins over teams who advanced to NAIA national tournaments. Included in the national-tournament victories were wins over the runner up in NAIA Division I, Columbia, a Division I semifinalist, MidAmerica Naza-rene, and a Division I quarterfinalist, McKendree. The Pirates also beat the runners-up in NAIA Division II basketball, Col-lege of the Ozarks, splitting the season series with both NAIA men’s basketball runners-up in 2008-09. Kline posted 16 wins in the 2007-08 season, advancing to the semifinals of the 2008 NAIA Independent Region Tournament in Orangeburg, S.C. Kline also coached an All-American who was also named NAIA Player of the Week at Park for the second-straight year in 2007-08, as Meriweather earned three All-America distinctions as well as two national weekly honors in 2007-08. In 2006-07, Brandon Voorhees was named to the All-America squad in addition to earning national player of the week honors, also being named Bas-ketball Times Co-Player of the Year at the close of the season. Kline is 68-55 (.553) in four seasons with the Pirates, including a 26-6 mark in 2006-07, the same year he took the Pirates to the NAIA Sweet 16 at Kansas City’s Municipal Auditorium. The tournament trip was the third in school history for the Pirates and marked the second-longest run in the tourna-ment for a Park University squad. During the 2007-08 season, Park also had wins over metro-area rival Wil-liam Jewell, which was preceded by a come-from-behind victory over nationally

ranked McKendree at Breckon Sports Center. In addition to Meriweather’s All-American dis-tinctions, Kline’s 2007-08 squad also produced three Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes, as Ben Wallis, Mi-chael Zimmerman and Deron Cherry II were named Academic All-Americans by the NAIA, running his total at Park to six nationally recognized student-ath-letes with academic honors. The 2006-07 season marked one of the greatest single-season turnarounds in NAIA Men’s Basketball history, as the Pirates went from a 10-22 record in 2005-06 to an .813 winning percentage during the NAIA tournament run. In addition to the turnaround and tournament appearance, Park also recorded its first win over an NCAA Division I school under Kline’s watch – a 103-99 exhibition triumph over UMKC in November. Kline came to Park after seven successful seasons at Indiana Tech University in Fort Wayne, Ind., where

he led the Warriors to a 140-84 record during his tenure. In 2004-05, he guided Indiana Tech to a school record 29 wins (eight losses) and the school’s second straight NAIA Division II National Tournament appearance, advancing to the Elite Eight. Over his last three seasons at Indiana Tech, Kline’s teams averaged more than 26 wins per year. In each of the last four seasons, his teams finished the regular season in the top 35 of the final NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball rat-ings, including a ranking of eighth in 2003-04 and 15th in 2004-05. Academically, Kline’s players had a graduation rate of 91.4 percent at Tech. Kline, who was named the WHAC (Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Con-ference) Coach of the Year in 2003-04, led Indiana Tech to a regular season conference title in 2003-04 and to the WHAC Tournament Championship in 2004-05. Individually, Kline’s players have accumulated a multitude of honors. Sev-enteen student-athletes have been named NAIA All-America Scholar Athletes under Kline, while 13 have earned athletic All-America honors. Fifty-one play-ers have been tabbed Academic All-Conference honorees, along with 27 All-Conference performers. Kline, who has an overall coaching record of 208-139 over 10 seasons, started his coaching career as an assistant at Indiana Tech from 1993-95, where he earned his undergraduate degree in business administration in 1994. Kline then spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Kansas Wesleyan University, in Salina, Kan., which is where he completed his M.B.A. in 1998. He and his wife, Jolina, a former women’s basketball student-athlete at Kansas Wesleyan, have two sons, Jacob and Jackson.

SEASON RECAP The Park University men’s basketball team experienced ups and downs in 2008-09, beginning before the first ball went in the air when Jon Meriweather was named one of the NAIA’s players to watch by Bas-ketball Times, in addition to a First Team Preseason All-American by the publication. The Pirates began the year with three wins in their first nine games, but the team quickly rebounded with a pair of wins, get-ting a victory at home over rival William Jewell College, followed by an 11-point vic-tory over NCAA Division II Missouri West-ern. The Pirates also played nationally ranked NCAA Division II Southwest Baptist to just four points, and earlier in the year, Park beat a top 10 NAIA program in McKendree at Breckon Sports Center, 79-64. Park ended the 2008 portion of the schedule with two wins and a close loss to McKendree, gathering wins over now-American Midwest Conference foes Missouri Baptist and Columbia. Out of the gate in 2009, the Pirates won eight of 10 games, falling only to nationally ranked College of the Ozarks (in overtime) and Columbia, getting wins in the streak over Belle-vue, Illinois-Springfield, MidAmerica Nazarene, Rockhurst and C of O. Park finished the year with losses in four of its final five games, including a season-ending semifinal loss in the 2009 A.I.I. Tournament to Crichton College, 87-83. 2008-09 marked the Pirates second-straight 16-win campaign.

NATIONAL COMPETITION The Pirates played a national schedule in 2008-09, playing 23 games against teams that were either NCAA Division II programs or spent time receiving votes in NAIA Top 25 polls. Park beat McKendree, Southern Nazarene, William Jewell, Missouri Western, Columbia, Bellevue, Illinois-Springfield, MidAmerica Naza-rene, Rockhurst and College of the Ozarks during the season, marking 10 of the team’s 16 wins. The Pirates were also a team receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25, rising into the Top 40 midway through the year.

AGAINST THE AMC Park will join the American Midwest Confer-ence in 2009-10, but the Pirates got their fill of AMC competition in the 2008-09 season, play-ing home-and-home non-conference series with Columbia, McKendree, Missouri Baptist and recently departed member Illinois-Springfield. The Pirates swept the season series with MBU, winning by five in St. Louis and by three at Breckon Sports Center, and Park split the sea-son with its other three AMC opponents, win-ning at home against McKendree, Columbia and UIS, while falling in games played on the road. Park beat McKendree by 15 in Parkville, and the Pirates defeated Columbia by four on their home floor in December. In January, Park posted a nine-point win over Illinois-Springfield. Prior to the December break, Park fell to McKendree at MPCC by two, and the team suf-fered a one-point loss to Columbia at the South-well Complex before falling by nine points in Springfield to UIS.

MILESTONES HIGHLIGHT MIDSEASON Midway through the 2008-09 season, three Park basketball milestones were reached, as Jon Meriweather scored his 1,000th career point in a 25-point effort against Missouri Baptist. Against Columbia, he picked up his 700th

career rebound. Head coach Jason Kline got in on the mile-stones, as well, picking up his 200th career win in a 71-68 victory Jan. 3 over MBU.

POSTSEASON AWARDS The Park University men’s basketball sea-son ended in 2008-09 with several postseason awards, including two Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes and one NAIA All-American. Michael Zimmerman and Deron Cherry II were honored with the NAIA’s top academic award, which is given only to student-athletes that are at least a junior academically with a 3.5 grade point average or higher. Jon Meriweather took the NAIA’s highest on-court honor at season’s end, earning All-America honors from the NAIA. Park also had NAIA All-Independent honors, including first-team on-court honors for Meri-weather and second-team awards for Cherry, Zimmerman and Herschel Rodgers. Academically, the A.I.I. honored both Zim-merman and Cherry, in addition to Philip Gar-nett, Eduardo Quintero, Jeremy Voorhees and Milan Susnjar. Zimmerman, Cherry and Susnjar were also MCAC Scholar Athletes at year’s end.

2008-09 PARK MEN’S BASKETBALL SENIOR CLASSL to R: Deron Cherry II, Nathan Duncan, Chris Jones, Jon Meriweather, Marcus Seidel, Milan Susnjar, Michael Zimmerman.

Herschel Rodgers (30) and Reco Anderson (20) were staples in the starting lineup for the Pirates in 2008-09. Rodgers finished the year averaging 11 points and six rerbounds per game, and at season’s end, he was one of four Park players named to the All-Affiliated Independent Institutions team. Anderson entered the starting lineup late in the year, averaging eight points in 28 games played, earning 20 starts.

Park University calls Parkville, Mo., and the Greater Kansas City Area home, offering students the fea-tures of both small-town life and the flashing lights

of the big city. With a population of just more than 4,000, Parkville allows students the small-town lifestyle and tightly knit community often times associated with small college ath-letics and the NAIA. Originally a trading post on the Missouri River, Parkville grew as Kansas City boomed in the late 1800s, which included the founding of Park University. Both the University and the city get their names from Col. George S. Park, who played a key role in the early development of the area. Today, Parkville’s historic downtown district coupled with new shopping areas to the north and east of Park Uni-versity’s Parkville Campus gives Park students two great entertainment opportunities within the area. Parkville sits within the Northland of the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area, which encompasses 15 counties, nine of which are in Missouri and six across the state line in Kan-sas. The Northland is locally referred to as “north of the river”. Contained wholly within Missouri, it encompasses portions of Clay County including the northern half of Kansas City, Mo., and the cities of

Parkville, Liberty, North Kansas City and Gladstone. As a whole, the Kansas City Metropolitan Area is situated at the con-fluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers, often referred to as Kaw Point, straddling the state border between Missouri and Kansas. The Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area, anchored by Kansas City, Mo., is the 27th largest in the United States, with an estimated popu-

Kansas City’s downtown skyline one of the metropolitan area’s most recognizable views, as seen from across the Missouri River. The downtown area, which has undergone a drastic face lift in the last two years, is about 10 miles from Park University’s Parkville campus (above). Home to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, the College Basketball Experience, Municipal Auditorium and the Power & Light District, downtown Kansas City is re-establishing itself as one of the area’s best entertainment districts.

The Wizards currently play next door to Kansas Speedway at Com-munity America Ballpark, which is also home to KC’s minor league baseball franchise, the Kansas City T-Bones. The Wizards are scheduled to open a new stadium in 2011 where Ban-nister Mall once stood on the city’s east side. Kansas City is also home to the Kansas City Explorers of World Team Tennis, and the city will add two more mi-nor league franchises during Park Universi-ty’s 2009-10 school year when the Missouri Mavericks of the CHL begin play in Inde-pendence, along with an American Basket-ball Association franchise that will work to begin play in the ABA’s 2009 season. Kansas City is also home to the Sprint Center and Kansas City Power & Light District, which opened in 2007 and has quickly turned into one of the region’s top entertainment districts. The Sprint Center also houses the Col-lege Basketball Experience, which includes the College Basketball Hall of Fame. Blocks from the Power & Light Dis-trict and the Sprint Center sits Municipal Auditorium, home to the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Tourna-ment. Additionally, the National Associa-tion of Intercollegiate Athletics moved its offices downtown in the summer of 2007 after more than five years in nearby Olathe,

Kan., blocks from both the Sprint Center and Municipal Auditorium. In the 2006-07 season, Park advanced to the tournament’s sweet 16, marking the deepest run in more than a decade by a Kansas City-area team. Kansas City is also known for its historic shopping districts, including Westport and the Country Club Plaza, which is one of the world’s largest outdoor shopping areas designed for motor-vehicles. Commonly referred to as “The Plaza”, the Country Club Plaza is home to one of the nation’s largest holiday light displays between the Thanksgiv-ing Holiday and mid-January. In the Northland, Zona Rosa has become a popular shopping district, while Town Center and The Legends at Village West in Kansas keep shop-pers occupied in the Sunflower State.

At nearly 80,000 seats and the third-largest facility in the National Football League, Arrowhead Stadium is known as one of the NFL’s loudest when the Chiefs play on Sundays in the fall. Arrowhead is part of the two-stadium Truman Sports Complex, which also houses the newly renovated Kauffman Stadium, home of Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals. At nearly 40,000 seats, “the K” opened in 1973 and was home to the Royals in 1985 when the club brought home its first-ever World Series title in seven games over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Claude English enters his 14th year as Park University’s Director of Athletics, serving in the role since January of 1996.

English coached men’s basketball for 13 standout seasons before retiring from coaching at the conclusion of the 2004-05 season, beginning his affiliation with Park athletics in the 1992-93 men’s basketball campaign. Women’s golf and men’s baseball have been added as intercollegiate sports since his ap-pointment to A.D. In addition, English has over-seen numerous facility improvements, such as Park soccer’s 1,500-seat Julian Field and the construc-tion of the Breckon Sports Center. Under English’s watch as A.D., 144 students have earned All-America Scholar-Athlete honors, while 76 individuals were named athletic All-Americans. Additionally, Park has also won 45 conference championships under English’s watch as A.D., and Pirate athletic programs have advanced to at least one NAIA national event in each of his previous 13 years leading the department. The winningest coach in Park men’s basketball history with a record of

182-207, English’s coaching tenure was highlighted by the Pirates’ run to the NAIA final four in 1997-98, which ended with a school-record mark of 27-8. English was honored at the national tournament with the Charles A. Krigel Award for outstanding sportsmanship, while his team was awarded the Dr. James Naismith-Emil S. Liston Sportsmanship Award for the team recognized as most sportsman-like at the tourney. After playing basketball for Christian Col-lege in Dallas, Texas, and the University of Rhode Island, English was selected in the NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers where he played the 1970-71 season. English also played in the Eastern Basketball Association for the Hartford Capitals, the affiliate team for the Philadelphia 76ers. In 1973-74, English won the Eastern Basketball As-sociation Championship with the Capitals. He was a three-year captain at Hartford. He joined the coaching staff at the Univer-
