SACRED HEART CHURCH, LA PLATA

HALLOWEEN

By the end of October, in most of North America and Europe, days

have become short and cold. The Church keeps a great festival at

this dark time of year — All Saints and All Souls, the first and sec-

ond days of November. And, like every other Christian festival, the

holiday begins at sunset on the day before. An old name for All

Saints Day was All Hallowmas. (“Hallow” is another word for

saint.) The eve of All Saints was called All Hallows Eve, which got

shortened into Halloween (from “Hallowe’en,” i.e., Hallows even-

ing). On this evening, huge bonfires were lighted on hilltops to

welcome the dead who would return home for a bit of comfort by

the warm hearthside. Food was set out. Any stranger was wel-

comed into the home. Who knew? Maybe the stranger was really a

dead relative! But the annual return of the dead brought trouble as

well. Not all of them were friendly. So everyone stayed together

all night for protection, and they told stories of the dead and of nar-

row escapes from cranky ghosts. People dressed up like the dead to

make any ghostly visitors feel more welcome and also to confuse

the angry ones. Halloween night still can be a Christian celebration,

kept as the holy eve of All Saints Day. Halloween customs reflect

the gospel. Trick-or-treating is just good, old-fashioned hospitality.

In the name of Christ, we welcome all who knock on our doors.

Walking in the streets in masks and costumes reminds us of our

journey to heaven. Once our journey is done, we will take our

masks off and see ourselves as we truly are —the beloved children

of God, the saints in glory.

BAPTISM PREPARATION: Those wishing to ar range for a

baptism during the month of November are asked to call the parish

office before the end of October. Please keep in mind that those

presenting their children for baptism must be active participating

members of Sacred Heart Parish who have been registered and

attending Mass on a regular basis for a minimum of three months.

Dear Parishioners,

This week at the Carmel Monastery I preached on Blessed John XXIII’s life (whose feast day was on October 11) and his daily points to live by. Some people wanted a copy of it, so here it is for all.

BLESSED JOHN XXIII’S DAILY PLAN FOR LIFE

(They have been helpful to me, and I hope they help you in your

day-to-day Walk with Christ)

1. Only for today, I will seek to live the livelong day positively without wishing to solve the problems of my life all at once.

2. Only for today, I will take the greatest care of my appearance: I will dress modestly; I will not raise my voice; I will be courteous in my be-havior; I will not criticize anyone; I will not claim to improve or to disci-pline anyone except myself.

3. Only for today, I will be happy in the certainty that I was created to be happy, not only in the other world but also in this one.

4. Only for today, I will adapt to circumstances, without requiring all circumstances to be adapted to my own wishes.

5. Only for today, I will devote ten minutes of my time to some good reading, remembering that just as food is necessary to the life of the body, so good reading is necessary to the life of the soul.

6. Only for today, I will do one good deed and not tell anyone about it.

7. Only for today, I will do at least one thing I do not like doing; and if my feelings are hurt, I will make sure that no one notices.

8. Only for today, I will make a plan for myself: I may not follow it to the letter, but I will make it. And I will be on guard against two evils: hastiness and indecision.

9. Only for today, I will firmly believe, despite appearances, that the good Providence of God cares for me as no one else who exists in this world.

10. Only for today, I will have no fears. In particular, I will not be afraid to enjoy what is beautiful and to believe in goodness. Indeed, for twelve hours I can certainly do what might cause me consternation were I to believe I had to do it all my life.

—BLESSED JOHN XXIII

In Christ, Fr. Larry

PLEASE PRAY FOR THE HAPPY REPOSE OF THE SOUL

of Deacon James E. Brown. THIS SUNDAY IS WORLD PRIESTHOOD SUNDAY. We

thank all our priests for their loving service to God’s people. We

join with thousands of other Catholics worldwide in taking a day to

especially recognize the priests who so faithfully serve us by

providing the Sacraments, spiritual guidance, education and love as

a daily gift. Please tell our parish priests how much you love them! APOLOGETICS CLASS: Please join us this coming Tuesday,

October 27, at 7:00 PM in the Friendship Room for Fr. Larry’s

presentation on “The Eucharist: The Center of Faith”. All are wel-

come and urged to attend. ALL SOULS: The Catholic Church has tr aditionally set aside the month of November as a month in which we remember all our departed loved ones. At this time of year, days are short and growing shorter, and we ask God to speed up the coming of the kingdom, where justice will flower, where life will be lived in all its fullness, where death itself will die. Here in our parish, one Mass is offered each day of the month for all those whose names are submitted to us on the special All Souls envelopes included in your monthly envelope packets. Extra envelopes are available at the entrances of the church or at the parish office. Please drop these envelopes in the collection basket, mail them in or bring them by the parish office. During the month of November, they will be on display in the sanctuary near the altar and pulpit area as a reminder of our daily remembrance of our departed loved ones in our prayers.

THEOLOGY OVER DINNER: This Thursday, Oct. 29, Kevin’s Corner Café in Leonardtown. Try to arrive no later than 6:00-6:15 PM if you’d like to order dinner (Seats fill up fast). This month’s talk is entitled, “The Face of Mercy.” Sr. Maria de la Revelacion Castaneda, who serves as Mission Education Coordinator for the Office of Mis-sions in the Archdiocese of Washington, will be the guest speaker. Invite a friend! Non-practicing Catholics are welcome to attend. If you have any questions, or a suggestion for a speaker or topic, please contact Doug Powell at [email protected]. Or visit www.facebook.com/groups/563805007089061/
