The Significance of Easter and its Link to Divine Mercy
Happy Easter Sacred Heart! This is my second Easter with you as my parish family and today we celebrate the greatest day of the en-tire Church year, EASTER. Why is the Resurrection of Jesus so important? St. Paul says:
"If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and
your faith is in vain." 521 The Catechism of the Catholic Church states:
The Resurrection above all constitutes the confirmation of all
Christ's works and teachings. All truths, even those most inac-
cessible to human reason, find their justification if Christ, by his
Resurrection, has given the definitive proof of his divine authori-
ty, which he had promised.
In simple words, the Resurrection of Jesus is the proof that God is real and that everything that the Church teaches is real.
The Catechism goes on to say:
The Paschal mystery has two aspects: by his death, Christ liber-
ates us from sin; by his Resurrection, he opens for us the way to
a new life. This new life is above all justification that reinstates
us in God's grace.
On Good Friday we celebrated the sacrifice of Jesus’ life on the Cross which freed us from sin, but the Resurrection gives us the life of grace to become Holy!
Every Sunday is a celebration of Christ's death and resurrection, and what a better way to celebrate this reality than by receiving a plenary indulgence next week on Divine Mercy Sunday. The Sunday after Easter is called Divine Mercy Sunday. It was started by Pope St. John Paul II. Jesus appeared to a nun (St. Faustina) in Poland in the early years of the 20th century.
Jesus, when he appeared, requested this Feast of Mercy be designat-ed and that the Sunday after Easter be designated Devine Mercy Sunday. He promised to pour out a whole ocean of graces on that day. Jesus promised the total forgiveness of sins and punishment
for a soul that would go to Confession and then receive Holy Com-
munion.
The official Vatican explanation of the Feast of Mercy is as follows: According to Jesus, the Feast of Mercy is to be celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Jesus is showing to us the close connection between the Easter mystery of man's redemption and this feast. The Feast of Mercy is to be not only a day designated for the worship of God's mercy, but also a day of grace for all people; particularly for sinners. Jesus attached great promises to this feast. One is the prom-ise of complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. In other words, this grace is equal to the one we receive in the sacrament of Bap-
tism. It offers a completely new beginning. Next Sunday we will have Confession all throughout the Masses and then we will have a Eucharistic Holy Hour from 2-3pm ending with the singing of the Divine Mercy Chaplet at 3pm and Eucharistic Benediction at 3:30pm. I hope many of you will experience God’s mercy and love that come from the Lord's Resurrection! See you next week,
Christos Anesti, Fr. Larry
