All living things should be pampered, not spoiled, just pampered. Pampering is that extra little something that tells the pampered they are special.

Some time ago I read an article that listed forty ways to make your cat happy. It was in the IAMS Company monthly magazine. It confirmed what I already knew. My cats are very pampered. I believe they should be.

Some of the ideas, I didn't consider pam-pering. I thought they were common sense good care. But, here are some ideas I do like for putting a smile on your felines' faces. And, when your princes or princesses are smiling, you know how you will be feeling. Except, of course, when the “thank you” is a good knead-ing with long claws.

#1 Play hide-and-treat, especially if you have only one cat. If you are gone a lot, try tucking treats in kitty's favorite spots. A toy ball that dispenses a kibble as it rolls around beats boredom, too. Of course, if you have more than one cat, it can also cause fights so be cautious.

#2 Comb or brush your “babies” daily. It prevents hairballs, catches fleas, makes kitties gorgeous, and it is a great time for cuddling and bonding.

#3 Even if you can't carry a tune, pick a special song and sing it regularly. Kitties don't notice you're off key. Or...

#4 Put on a CD, hold a kitty in your arms and dance. My Princess Saroya, of years ago, used to love to dance to Boots Randolph's “Ya-kety Sax”. (That was on a 33 1/3 LP)

#5 In our urban society, indoor cats live longer. Do provide them, though, with a couple of good viewing spots to observe the outdoor world.

#6 Speaking of viewing, even cats can be couch potatoes. Our very old Siamese loves to watch TV and really perks up when cats meow in commercials.

#7 Catch some ZZZs together. Take a catnap with kitty curled up on you. If the phone rings, don't answer--this time is meant just for the two (or three or four) of you.

#8 If you're really brave, get one of those currently popular trickling fountains to set on a table. I don't think I'll try that -- the drip-ping would drive me nuts, and it takes little imagination to envision the number of ways my crew could find to decimate the trickling fountain and the table and the floor and my disposition.

#9 I've been told that not all cats take to catnip, but I've never owned one that didn't. A little in an old sock, or rubbed on their scratching posts, makes for happy cats around our house.

#10 Add a glass of wine for me and we are all in cat heaven.

Happy Cats

Paint ‘n’ Play Art StudioLisa Barrios, along with her sister

Rachel Quimayousie, owns the successful Paint ‘n’ Play2 Ceramic Art Studio and Gallery in Monrovia’s Old Town. Lisa and her sister took over the ceramic business in 2001 when it was located in Sierra Madre. In 2003, at the behest of many friends, customers and associates they relocated the business to Old Town Monrovia. Since then, the sisters have expanded to include high-fired ceramics, custom handprints of children (and paw prints of all animals), instructional workshops, corporate team-building events, and custom commissioned ceramic pieces, including auction items and awards for local schools, businesses and civic groups. They were recently commissioned to create ceramic teapots for the Annual Emmy Awards in Hollywood. They take great pride in the fact that all Paint ‘n’ Play products are American made, striving to purchase from SoCal and local-area vendors whenever possible. Their love for Monrovia and dedication to the community are always important in their business decisions. The art gallery, developed by Lisa & Rachel as a way to assist the non-profit Monrovia Associ-ation of Fine Arts features the photography, painting, sculpture, ceramics and jewelry of local artists. Lisa and her sister, Rachel, also created a program for local cancer patients, “Hold ‘n’ Hands, Help ‘n’ Hearts”: This legacy program creates keepsake ceramic handprints for cancer patients and their families, at no cost to them. “It is our desire to inspire families to memorialize the people they love who are being treated for cancer with this very special program.” Though the recent vagaries of the economy have proven challenging for Paint ‘n’ Play, but Lisa & Rachel plan to keep and grow their successful, multi-faceted art business in Old Town Monrovia. www.paintnplay2.com

Pet Jungle

Jeanette Dana, owner of the Pet Jungle shop in Arcadia is continuing a family legacy that was begun in 1963 by her mother in law, Dawn. As a child, Jeanette lived just around the corner from the shop and would ride her bike to the store nearly every day to visit with all the animal - which, at the time included many exotics like a monkey named LeRoy.

In 1985, Dana moved back to her childhood home and came into the shop where she met her future husband Joe, Dawn's youngest son. The two were married in 1986. It was in 2004 that Dawn retired, leaving the store to Joe and Jeanette, who stepped in as the store's second genera-tion of owners.

“Our mission continues to be to provide quality prod-ucts at a fair price, excellent. Knowledgeable customer service and a place where your pet's needs will always come first,” says Dana. “We have been blessed beyond belief by our valued, loyal customers, friends and family who continue to shop here, and we want to say ‘thank you' to every one.”

The mission and motto of the Arcadia Spine Center is: To get the injured healthy and keep the healthy well through natural holistic med-icine. Since 1995, they have treated each patient with this common sense approach to chiropractic medicine, and since 1997 Robert D. Clar-izio has been leading the practice to excellence.

“I am extremely thankful for the votes and I am inspired to con-tinue to give the best care possible,”said Clarizio of being recog-nized in the Best of the Best. His goal is to, “inspire, edu-cate, and empower people to constantly improve the qual-ity of their lives spiritually, physically and nutritional.” The Arcadia Spine Center treats all neuromusculosk-eletal complaints from head to toe. In addition to chiro-practic treatments we also offer rehab therapy, massage therapy, and acupuncture.

Dr. Clarizio was raised in Arcadia where he currently resides with his wife Hope and Children Christopher and Jenna. His father, Orlando Sr., inspired him to become a physician.

Dr. Clarizio has been in private practice in Arcadia for more than 20 years, having first started in Temple City. He is on staff at Methodist Hospital and San Gabriel Valley Hospital. His affiliation with Methodist Hospital has included positions as Vice-Chief of Staff and Chief of Medicine, also serving on

the Utilization and Quality As-surance committees, among others.

Personally, Dr. Clarizio has enjoyed many years of coaching AYSO soccer teams in the Arcadia area, and later training and coaching a club soccer team, touring the U.S.A. and Europe, and winning many awards. His dedication to youth soccer has been recognized by the City of Arcadia and Mayor of Los Angeles. Dr. Clarizio prides himself in providing com-plete medical care along with a staff a dedicated employees.

Born and raised in Glendale, CA, Dr. Clarizio chose to pursue a career as a chiropractor after he was successfully treated for a high school football injury. His positive results as a chiropractic patient gave him a tremendous amount of confidence in this type of health care that could al-leviate pain without drugs or surgery.

The Center is equipped to provide a variety of treat-ments and diagnostic test. The most current treatment includes a laser treatment to help reduce the symptoms of allergies.

Imagine an exotic trip to beau-tiful Thailand; looking at beautiful beaches, gaxing through ancient temples and immersing in the local culture. Going to President Thai is the closest thing in town to actu-ally being there. The restaurant re-cently moved to its newly designed original Thai architecture building in Pasadena where they serve au-

Matt Denny was the only son of an Irish Sea Captain. Most of Matt Denny's childhood was spent run-ning back and forth between the east-ern seaboard and the Caribbean.

Born in Key West and schooled in the deepwater ports of the warm Caribbean seas, Matt loved the col-ors and flavors of these tropical play-grounds. By the age of fourteen, Matt was working as a cook at the only place to eat in Pirate's Cove, Jimmy B's Havana Day Dream.

Matt Denny's family was lost at sea in the Bermuda Triangle, so Matt decided to leave the Carib-bean and try his luck in Mexico. There he was befriended by Roberto Avila. Roberto and Matt opened a cantina where “pirates” bought and sold hard to get cargo. Roberto y Mateo's Cantina was the busiest bar in all of Mexico. But a dispute over a card game sent Matt Denny to the safety of the Pacific Northwest, where he ran into Peter Russell, a famous hunter and guide.

Together Matt and Peter hiked the streams and mountains of the

Northwest, with Peter making a good living selling furs, while Matt cooked the game for local lumber-jacks. Some of their early trophies can be seen on the walls of this very ale house...there's Bullwinkle, Mac and Warren.

Later, the lure of endless riches brought Matt down to California where he returned to what he did best: feeding the locals. Matt found miners and settlers lining up at his campfire every night for a hearty meal and homemade ale. It was at Artie's Camp where Matt Denny opened his first ale house. The back bar you see in this restaurant is the original bar from over a hundred years ago.

Today Matt Denny's Alehouse uses the same recipes from the Ca-ribbean, Mexico, Pacific Northwest and early California that Matt de-veloped during his lifetime. They match these great meals with the best hand crafted ales available. So be sure to enjoy the founder's love for good food and ale and come back again and again.

Currently celebrating their 36th Anni-versary in Arcadia, Peppers Grill and Can-tina is a Mexican restaurant that we think has it all. Open daily for lunch and dinner, they offer an extensive menu of authentic Mexican food. You won't want to miss their Champagne Brunch served on Saturdays and Sundays. Peppers offers multiple dining areas: You may dine indoors in a beautiful hacienda style atmosphere or outdoors in their newly added patio dining area. For those who enjoy watching sporting or other

television events you may choose to dine in their sports bar area that features nine television sets, California “Hot Spot Lotto” and a full service bar. Their menu features a delicious selection of house specialties. Our favorites were the fajitas Especial, Pollo a la Peppers, and their Baby Back Ribs. With its affordable pricing, large servings, and excellent service, you'll want to return time and again with your family and friends. We think you'll agree with us that Peppers is on great selection.

Ever since the yogurt craze of the 1980’s, frozen yo-gurt lovers have traveled great distances in search of the few remaining places that sold this addictive treat. And so began Sierra Cup's quest. And when they found this unique space in beautiful Old Town Mon-rovia, with a back patio and stage, they knew they were building more than just a yo-gurt shop. With an ultra sleek interior featuring flat screen TVs and video games, Sierra Cup is all about fun!

More than just a yogurt shop, it’s a family nightclub of-fering live music, karaoke and movie nights and free Wi Fi

With Fresh Roasted Cof-fee, Gourmet Cupcakes, Real Fruit Smoothies, Homemade Sandwiches, and Fresh Gour-met Soups, Sierra Cup prom-ises “the best stuff we could find to stick in a cup! Our business philosophy is to pro-vide customers with the very finest products and sell them cheaper than our competitors. It is our honest desire to be the very best!”

Situated in one of the or ig ina l h is tor ic bu i ld -i ng s of Old Pa sadena , redwhite+bluezz offers top-t ier menu ingredients, a Sommelier-directed wine program (including tasting flights, a series of two-hour classes, and an exceptional bottle selection), and a styl-ish venue for enjoying the work of the area's most re-nowned Jazz Artists.

The facility itself is di-vided into two main sec-t ions: The Grill, located on the corner of Raymond Ave. and Green Street and the larger Jazz Club, with its beautiful terrace, which is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, as well as for brunch on Sundays. While others in the area have either Wine, Music or excellent American Cuisine, all three are available at redwhite+bluezz.

Work-ing real es-tate since 1987, Reni Rose wa s promoted to Vice President for Prudential California Re-alty, Sierra Ma-dre in October 1990. She has been the number one producer in her office since 1988 and has been nationally recognized for her outstanding achievement since 1993 as a “Chairman’s Circle” award winner.

In 2000 and 2006 Reni re-ceived the prestigious “Legend” award for consistently achieving a multi-million-dollar level every year, making her one of the 76 agents recognized from a field of 42,000!

As testament to her exem-plary customer service, 85% of Reni’s business is either repeat clients or referrals.

“When past clients hire me again to work for them or refer business to me, I regard that as the highest form of a com-pliment I could ever receive,” says Reni.

Although born in Texas,

Reni R. RosePrudential California RealtyVice President, Sales Executive

Reni is a transplant from New Orleans, Louisiana with 23 family members still residing in the “Big Easy.” She has a 19 year old daughter who at-tends college at Pas-adena City College and has sister who is married with two children.

Reni has lived in the Highland Oaks area of Ar-

cadia since March 1994. She has also lived in Sierra Madre and Pasadena. Prior to her career in real estate, she spent 10 years with the Federal Government, ending her Government career at NASA/JPL in Pasadena.

While Reni says “I don’t need to “vacation” much because love what I do for a living and I live near one of the most scenic vacation spots in the country!” Although real estate consumes almost every waking moment - Reni enjoys her ability to be face-to-face with the magnificent expanse of the Pacific Ocean within an hour's drive. Reni has found her haven for relaxation in Dana Point and Laguna Beach, both offering her the makings of any Hawaiian beach: palm trees, golden sand and ocean waves.

One of the conveniences of having all these opportunities at Reni’s fingertips is that if there is

a need for her to handle a busi-ness transaction or meet with a client, she’s always just a stone’s throw from her office and can be readily available.

Reni sincerely enjoys her career as a real estate executive and her passion for the business will become apparent to you after spending just a few min-utes with her. Just ask, “How’s business?”

Reni's Client-First Phi-losophy

“There are many qualities and skills that go into being an excellent real estate professional - integrity, in-depth community and market knowledge, marketing savvy, effective negotiation skills and a high-quality professional network, all of which are hallmarks of how I work.

That said, I've also found that providing the very best service is es-sentially about putting my clients first. This means keeping myself accessible, being a good listener as well as a good communicator, and responding quickly to clients' needs.

This “client first” philosophy has always been my approach and it requires me to continually improve my skills and ways of doing business. In addition, I've found that the latest technologies are enabling me to do ev-erything I've always done, only much more quickly and efficiently, helping me to extend the range of services I provide to my clients.”

Kevin Shaw of Kevin Shaw Plumbing, Inc. has been serving the San Ga-briel Valley since 1982. What started as a service and repair company soon expanded with a Remodel

and Custom Home construc-tion division. In 1995 Kevin Shaw Plumbing, Inc. returned to its roots to focus solely on residential and commercial service and repair. Though many companies jokingly

claim, “We fix what your husband broke!” Kevin Shaw Plumbing, Inc. has gained the reputation for solving problems that even other plumbing companies can’t diagnose or repair.

No matter the season or the weather, the beach is always beautiful. Weather it’s hot and sunny or cold and rainy, near the water is a great place to be.

I thought about this re-cently as I pulled into the Oceana Santa Monica Hotel for a memorable February getaway.

Located on Ocean Ave., directly across the street from the water, Oceana is the epit-ome of boutique luxury. It features 70 classy suites, one third of which overlook the water; a 24-hour fitness center; valet parking; and a modern California-styled restaurant called Ocean Lounge.

My third-floor suite over-looked a charming, Medi-terranean-styled courtyard, where a trickling fountain and a crackling fireplace flank a pool area with a restaurant bar, palm trees and lots of nooks to relax in and meet with friends.

BOUTIQUE LUXURYOceana Santa Monica Hotel @@@@@YYHotel Hotel

The interior of the suite was bright and cheerful, like a summer day at the beach. The spacious living room boasted yellow walls, sur-rounding a 50-inch flat screen TV, sleeper sofa, office desk, game table, chase lounge, and kitchenette with stove, refrigerator, microwave, sink and cupboards stocked with cooking supplies.

The bedroom featured a cloud-like king bed with a flat screen TV on the wall and a private balcony. Next to this, a roomy bathroom offered a large tub and shower.

Another cool suite fea-ture was its front porch area, which could be enclosed like a private cabana by shutting a couple outside curtains.

The hotel’s amenities are great, but its bread and butter is location. So after relaxing poolside with a bloody Mary, a friend and I walked across the street and strolled along the ocean toward Santa Monica

Pier and its giant, colorful Fer-ris wheel. Along the way, we passed bikers, joggers, tourists and locals – all enjoying the beautiful scenery.

After lunch at the pier, we headed back to Oceana, where I worked out at the gym and then surfed the web poolside with the hotel’s free wireless Internet.

For dinner we walked out of our suite and into the Ocean Lounge, where we dined next to large windows overlooking the ocean. Our meal began with a truly scrumptious appe-tizer sampler plate, with crispy shrimp tempura, Dungeness crab bites, tuna tartare, and two mini stand burgers. With this I sipped a creative Oceana Lemonade with vodka, lem-onade and watermelon ice cubes.

For a main course I en-

joyed a pan roasted salmon with a light crust and a tender inside, served with fresh veg-etables. My friend selected organic chicken Milanese, with Dijon mustard and thyme arugula and tomato salad. For dessert we split the Oceana American Classic Banana Split with three flavors of il laboratorio del gelato, includ-ing vanilla, strawberry and dark chocolate.

While eating, we ad-mired the chic, open-air res-taurant design, which flows into the pool area on one side and overlooks the ocean on the other.

After dinner, we walked about 15 minutes to the Ye Olde King’s Head British Pub, located next to Santa Monica Pier.

All holidays mean dif-ferent things to different people, but I find Valentine’s Day to be the most puz-zling. For every one person who truly looks forward to this day of expressing love and kisses, there are 1500 people who dread it and pray for the 15th of February to come as quickly as possible. Remember the girl who car-ried home a book bag full of cards and candy from all her admirers? Remember the evening in college when you and your friends hid and watched all the lucky girls leave for an evening of din-ner and flowers? Remember

STRAWBERRIES FOR YOUR SWEETthe coworker whose husband sent a singing Valentine card that she played over and over all day long? What a miserable day for so many people! I have several tricks up my sleeve though. Find a way to deliver your daughter a Valentine from an anonymous admirer, and add some excitement and mystery to her day.

Plan a fun night of movies and fun for all the roommates needing some extra atten-tion. Buy yourself a wonder-ful card, box of candy, and vase of flowers for your desk at work. Seriously if all this sounds ridiculous and it really is, then try doing something

for someone to remind them he or she is loved and needed in your life. I have a great recipe for Strawberry Bread that will warm someone’s heart and will make your day special too.

You will need to drain the strawberries and remember to save the juice. Mix the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and sugar in a large mixing bowl. Add the eggs and oil and stir until moistened. It is easier to make a well in the dry ingredients and add the liquids gently. Stir in the straw-berries and pecans. You will need to grease two medium loaf pans or use smaller ones

and adjust the cooking time. Cook at 350 degrees for one hour in the medium pans. Cool for at least ten minutes.

Now here is a special treat. Add ½ stick of butter to a ½ cup of confectioner’s sugar and mix until creamy. Add a bit of the reserved strawberry juice to get the right consis-tency for spreading. This is a major WOW factor on a piece of warm strawberry bread.

Make someone’s Valen-tine’s Day a special memory of friendship and of course a delicious treat from your kitch-en. Who needs flowers and a singing card anyway?!

facilities for homeless women are available on Monday and Thursday from 1 pm to 4 pm.

A large portion of the funding for The Bad Weather Shelter and other ECPAC services comes from the City of Pasadena. Others wishing to support through monetary, volunteer or food donations can contact O’Reilly through ECPAC by calling 626-797-2402 or by mail at P.O. Box 41125, Pasadena, California, 91114.

“The generosity of the community is critical right now,” says O’Reilly. “Any support provided can be ex-tremely important to our most vulnerable population.”

Good news for job-seekers: Two thousand people in the greater Pasadena area are expect-ed to be hired by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Pasadena’s Complete Count Commit-tee, representing more than 50 community organizations coordinating the survey efforts, announces that hiring is taking place now to help prepare the way for a complete count of residents in Pasadena and neighboring cities next spring during Census 2010.

Salaries are competitive for regional office positions with various levels of responsibility and for Census takers in the field. Full- and part-time jobs are available. A written test is required for all positions; sample questions are provided online.

Conducted every 10 years by mandate of the U.S. Constitution, the Census is a count of every living person in the United States of America. It takes only about 10 minutes to complete the form, and federal law protects personal information from being shared with other agencies. Results are used to identify community needs and distribute hundreds of billions of dollars in federal funding annually to U.S. cities in support of local housing, educa-tion, health and transportation services.

Bilingual speakers are encouraged to ap-ply. For more information visit www.census.gov or call (866) 861-2010 and enter your zip code to find out what tests are available when and where.

Decisions on Heritage Square Will In-clude Community Input

The City of Pasadena is renewing efforts to move the Heritage Square development project forward.

The five-year process for selecting a devel-oper has been unsuccessful for the proposed mixed-use project, which would be built on nearly three acres on Fair Oaks Avenue be-tween Orange Grove Boulevard and Painter Street owned by the Pasadena Community Development Commission.

Exclusive negotiations in the most recent endeavor were terminated in December 2008. Obstacles have included the complex nature of financing for affordable housing and challeng-ing economic and housing market conditions.

Next steps will include an assessment of feasible development scenarios, establishment of project parameters and criteria for developer selection.

Community participation will be essen-tial as the project moves forward. To receive project updates and alerts about community meetings, email [email protected] or call (626) 744-8316.

However, at this week’s meeting, there many people who spoke for their destruction as for their preservation. Council members said they felt obligated with the “removal plan”, since it is part of a phased landscaping plan that dates back to 1996. Sid Tyler, the lone member to vote against the plan last month, introduced

Ninety percent of the winning 17-minute short family drama was shot by Charles R. Uy on location in Pasadena with a Sony Alta-Vista F-900 camera. The film was his graduate thesis project for the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts.

Uy received a trophy presented by Pasa-dena Mayor Bill Bogaard and a $500 grant to be used toward his next film project. The entire film as well as a trailer can be viewed at www.moonrockmovie.com.

All submissions were reviewed by the Filming and Special Events Office and the top three were reviewed by a distinguished panel of Pasadena residents who work in the film industry: Rod Lurie, writer and director of the 2000 Academy Award- and Golden Globe-nominated film “The Contender” and the 2008 film “Nothing But the Truth”; Steven Culp, an actor with credits including “The West Wing,” “Desperate Housewives” and “JAG”; and Jim Maceo, a production supervisor/location man-ager whose filmography includes “Sister Act,” “I Y Huckabees” and “All the King’s Men.”

The runners-up in the competition were USC student David Greenspan’s “Yokai” and Chris Sanagustin’s “Fleece,” which she pro-duced as part of the American Film Institute’s Directing Workshop for Women project.

Deadline for submissions for the second annual competition will be Aug. 1, 2009. The competition is open to film students who use Pasadena locations in their class-related proj-ects and have valid filming permits. There is no entry fee.

An 18-year-old man was killed while the 2500 block of Millbrae Avenue after 6:30 p.m. Monday, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Depart-ment officials said.

According to witnesses, a dark vehicle pulled up and shots rang out from the rear window.

State Superintendent of Public Instruc-tion Jack O’Connell today issued the follow-ing statement after the U.S. Senate voted on its version of the federal economic stimulus package:

“Now that the Senate has passed its version of a federal economic stimulus plan, I urge the House-Senate conference to begin quickly and to act swiftly to resolve differences so that the bill can reach the President by Presidents’ Day. While I commend the Sen-ate on its inclusion of funds for IDEA, Title I, Education Technology, and early childhood programs, I am disheartened by the Senate’s compromise decision to exclude funding for school construction, renovation and repair; to halve the amount of funds for the state fiscal stabilization; to exclude funds for state educa-tional data systems, and to exclude language that would expand state participation in the after-school supper program.

“School construction, renovation, and re-pair funds will put people to work right away in California. As a result of the state’s dire fiscal situation, 886 already approved school con-struction, renovation, and repair projects are on hold. Funding from the stimulus package would jump-start these programs. Moreover, school facilities projects yield benefits beyond the specific school projects; they contribute to workforce development, increase green technology, and benefit many communities. “School districts are planning their budgets right now, and many districts are contemplating cutting teachers, staff, and vital programs. Without question, the state fiscal stabilization funds would help keep teachers working in classrooms and staff at schoolsites across the state. The Senate’s proposal, with reduced fiscal stabilization funding, will mean

Barack

Obama announced the formation of a new group known as “Organizing for America” that aims to continue the grassroots advocacy that the former Illinois Senator began in his presidential campaign.

“As President, I will need the help of all Ameri-cans to meet the challenges that lie ahead,” Obama said in a video message e-mailed to supporters (and reporters) a mere two weeks ago. “That’s why I’m asking people like you who fought for change during the campaign to continue fi ghting for change in your communities.”

The new group will be the flagship of “Obama 2.0” as it is known - the transformation of the political organization that was created during Obama’s successful 2008 presidential campaign.

The group will work within the DNC -- led by Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine -- to advance the Obama agenda. “President-elect Obama has laid the foundation to meet the great challenges facing our nation, but we can succeed only if we build grassroots support for the administration’s agenda,” Tim Kane said.

In an attempt to keep the momentum alive and get President Barack Obama’s po-litical hopes and dreams alive, through the elaborate maze of Washington’s corridors of power, the local grassroots organization in South Pasadena - Organizing for America has spawned here. Perhaps on of thousands around the country.

that we can almost guarantee that more of our educators will receive layoff notices in about four weeks’ time. This is represents a signifi-cant loss that will no doubt impact the quality of the education of California’s young people.

“Education data systems are criti-cally important in fully serving the needs of our students and will generate economic activity through development and purchase of data software and hiring and training of staff to col-lect, maintain, and report education data. In fact, a comprehensive education data system gives parents, educators, and policymakers the information needed to better target often-limited education resources, and in California we have made progress on this front. But this progress would not be able to continue if we do not receive funding for these programs in the stimulus package.

“Finally, the House language amending the National School Lunch Act would allow additional states to participate in the after-school supper program. Califor-nia has been operating a pilot after-school snack program that we would hope to expand through this language. There are many young people in our state who need this program.

“I urge members of the joint-con-ference committee, who will soon begin work to reconcile the Senate and House versions, to resolve differences in favor of the House version, which offers reasonably more in the way of relief for our schools, our state, and our economic resurgence. The national dialogue surrounding the stimulus package has centered on wise investment of these stimulus funds to boost our economy, and I couldn’t agree more, but the best investment – with the greatest return on our money – is in an investment in our children.”

dena, the two held a meeting Sunday to ad-dress the concerns of Obama supporters and how they might help him achieve his goals post election.

Dr. Ellin Lieberman, a self-proclaimed internet addict, led the group of about 30 concerned citizens with the Stimulus pack-age being the number one topic of discussion. Dr Liberman had a large tablet on which she wrote the group’s aspirations and detailed the point by point issues in order of importance. Discussion broke out about what was the best way to get their message(s) to senators and congressmen. The general consensus seemed to favor faxes and telephone calls rather than e mail. It was agreed that a physical piece of paper in one’s hand might carry more impact than an email that can easily be deleted.

Creation and protection of jobs. Should such jobs be “targeted” or “across the board?” The consensus was that the jobs created be sustainable.

Unemployment/food/shelter was also a key issue. The real emphasis for most of the meeting (and what most seemed to want to discuss) was on what democrats and Obama supporters can and should do to have an impact.

A microcosm of the American democratic public, the OFA strives to help legislators make the right decisions and keep reminding them they were VOTED into office and not appointed.

The now retired pediatricians Drs Harry and Ellin Lieberman are two really busy and conscientious people: Aside from their major effort this weekend to talk about the recovery/stimulus plan- an early effort is underway to help elderly people stay in their homes by col-lecting information on resources and needs - their hope is to attract enough volunteers to help those who need small errands - visits etc - they are planning a 3 month time period to determine feasibility and would welcome inquiries.
