Old age is like a bank account. You can with-draw only what you have put in. Every morning when we wake up we have a choice: we can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty we have with the parts of our bodies that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do. So, this morning I got up. I did a few things. I thought of do-ing a few more things. In-stead I sat down and began glancing through one of a stack of magazines.

One article grabbed my attention. It was a 12-step guide for junkahol-ics. It wasn’t a 12-step as in ‘turn it over to your higher power, attend regu-lar meetings, read the Big Book’. It was 12 ideas from a cleaning expert on how to get rid of clutter. He had some good ideas, especially for other people. I thought some would be a little tough for me.

I wonder. Who named him an expert? What are his qualificatons? Has anyone ever checked to see if his house is clut-tered? Does he maybe have a wife or roommate who cleans the clutter?

Can’t help it. I have to question. I’m a firm be-liever in that adage - any-thing that sounds too good to be true, probably is.

He says to start small and do one drawer per session. The whole job will make you feel over-whelmed. I say he’s right about that. One drawer is accomplishable. Besides it is helpful to have another messy drawer to move a few things to, temporarily. I don’t make any promises when the next session will be.

He says to get tough. Ask if each object is earn-ing its keep. If not, out it goes. I say how do I know I won’t need it next week if I toss it today? Just be-cuse I haven’t needed it for three years doesn’t re-ally mean I never will.

He says don’t get sidetracked. If you stop to read every old letter or look at every old photo, you’ll never get anywhere. I say plan enough time to read and look at them all. That’s why they were saved in the first place. I’ll maybe save them again. Probably.

He says to save maga-zine articles, not whole magazines, and file them right away. I say if I file them I’ll forget what I filed them under. This way I’ll know whatever I want is right here in one of these piles and the date and source didn’t get cut off accidentally.

He says to set a limit on saving bags, containers and boxes. Ten is reason-able. Fifty is not. I say I agree. But then, I want to be sure I have exactly the right size and shape.

He says to treat un-wanted gifts like flowers. You appreciate the senti-ment but you don’t have to keep them forever. I say that I keep the flowers too. I just press them in the magazines I’m keeping.

He says to get rid of two old garments every-time you buy a new one. I say I need to save them for everyday. Too, I might gain or lose a little weight and I’ll need them. Be-sides, if two go out each time and only one comes in, I’ll eventually go in the hole and get down to the Birthday Suit. It really isn’t too pretty any more.

He says to take the Stuff to the dump the same day because the next day you may reconsider. I say if you can put it out of sight, you can keep it. I’m an expert.

November 11, 2010 our nation proudly recog-nizes Veterans Day! It is a day set aside to honor and to express our appreciation to all of those brave service men and women who have served our nation so gal-lantly. Veteran’s Day is a time to remember those men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice of giving their lives to pre-serve freedom in our na-tion as well as many other nations around the world.

It is also a great time to fly our National Flag, Old Glory, in respect of those veterans who have endured obstacles and suffering, but who fought courageously to guarantee our sovereign rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of hap-piness.

T o d a y there are thou-sands of our troops return-ing home that have been severely in-jured with the loss of limbs, burned and even blinded while serving our country in Iraq, Afghani-stan or Paki-stan.

Sadly, many wounded service personnel will re-turn home broken finan-cially as well as broken physically with life chang-ing injuries. These veter-ans need comprehensive care; many need coordi-nated financial and other support that will enable them to swiftly make that difficult life adjustment back into our society.

There are many car-ing people who are help-ing these brave men and women and their families to rebuild their lives. But there is never enough! They need your help. For some, it’s paying bills be-cause the financial strains of the adjustment are so overwhelming. For others, it’s a computer so they can continue their education.

And for others it may be just simple thoughtfulness of taking them to a concert or entertainment event to help break the monotony of rehabilitation.

These Patriotic Hero’s were fully aware of the risks and dangers of fighting for our country, but still vol-unteered to do so anyway. So now it is our turn to vol-unteer to help them. Dur-ing this difficult economic time, get involved! These wounded heroes desper-ately need your help, thoughts, prayers, and well wishes as their reward for the great sacrifices that they have made while serv-ing our country. Thank you for caring enough to get involved to bring joy to a Veteran during the up-coming Holidays.

Veteran’s DayOn October 18, 2010

more than 500 community leaders, including elected of-ficials from Altadena, Pasa-dena and our state Senate and Assembly, celebrated the YWCA’s 8th annual Women for Racial Justice Breakfast honoring Anthony Stewart, commonly known as Tony with the 2010 Ra-cial Justice Award. Also in attendance were large num-bers of community leaders, YWCA “Just for Girls” pro-gram participants, and rep-resentatives from charitable, non-profit organizations and businesses.

Tony Stewart, this year’s 2010 Racial Justice Award Winner, has been a key figure in the elimination of racism beginning with her work to integrate the Pine Bluff library in Arkan-sas in 1927 to chartering the Altadena NAACP chapter in 1984 and founding the Black Coalition on Educa-tion, which was responsible for creating diversity in leadership. Najeeba Syeed-Miller, an international leader in conflict resolution in inter-ethnic, violent and multi-faith conflicts was the keynote speaker. KNBC reporter Beverly White was emcee.

The event, produced by the volunteers of the YW-CA’s Women for Racial Justice Breakfast Committee, was chaired by Molly Mung-er and co-chaired by Angela Myers-Rackleff and Abby Lloyd Sabin. The event also kicked off the YWCA Week without Violence. YWCA Executive Director, Tamika Farr shares, “This event exemplifies the heart of the YWCA. Both Tony

and Najeeba are strong and powerful voices for change and we are so thankful to not only have them as a part of our event this morning, but have them as partners in our continuous work towards the elimination of racism and the empowerment of women.”

First held in 2002, the event calls on all in the community to reinvigorate their efforts to recognize and take action against the many forms of racism that still exist in our day to day lives. Chairwoman Molly Munger told the audience, “Our focus is to embrace our diversity, to enjoy each other’s similarities and dif-ferences. . . .and to live the words in the YWCA Pasa-dena-Foothill Valley Racial

Justice Pledge.” The Pledge, which Breakfast guests read together, calls on each indi-vidual to discourage preju-dice at every opportunity and to treat all people with dignity and respect.

Corporate sponsors for the event were Kaiser Per-manente and Wells Fargo as Bridge-Builder Sponsors; Avery Dennison, Cabrera Capital Markets, Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center, LA County Supervisor Michael Anto-novich, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, Molly Mung-er, PCL Construction Ser-vices, Inc., and US Bank as Ambassador Sponsors.

Sanchez said there was plenty of talent already within the Pasadena Police Dept. from which to choose an assistant chief, however

he did not elaborate. There was some dis-

cord within the depart-ment when Chris Vicino was overlooked for Chief

of Police following Bernard Melekian’s departure. However City Manager Michael Beck’s choice was Sanchez.

As the number of local people who need help to feed

their families continues to grow, Foothill Unity Cen-ter is gearing up for its big-gest Thanksgiving food dis-tribution ever. “Last year, we served more than 1,500 pre-registered families that included over 5,000 men, women and children,” says Volunteer Coordinator Raina Diaz. “Since times have been really tough, more folks are unem-ployed and in crisis, and the need for our services has grown. This year’s numbers will be even high-er than last year’s, and we need the community’s support more than ever.”

Volunteers are still needed to fill morning and afternoon food sorting shifts Monday, November 8, through Tuesday, No-vember 16 in preparation for the Thanksgiving distri-bution. Box Packing Day is Saturday, November 20. Shifts also need to be filled for Monday, November 22, and Tuesday, Novem-ber 23, to help distribute food and assist clients dur-ing the event in Ayers Hall at the LA County Arbore-tum. More help is needed on the 23rd from 1 to 5 p.m. to handle breakdown and cleanup. For more in-formation, site locations, or to register as a volunteer for this program, call Raina or Rob at (626) 358-3486 or email [email protected].

always appreciates food donations, but never more than during at Thanksgiv-ing. Many groups hold food drives to help stock the shelves.

“What we always need most are turkey certifi-cates,” says Center Deputy Director Betty McWil-liams. “Our wish list also includes canned meats, tuna, vegetables, fruits, pumpkin pie filling, cran-berry sauce, chili, beans and hearty soups … mixes for cornbread, biscuits, cake, cookies, stuffing and gravy … frosting, marsh-mallows, Jell-o®, jams and jellies … cold and hot cere-als … salad dressing … and yams.” Donations may be dropped off any weekday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. at either Center location: 415 W. Chestnut Ave. in Monrovia or 191 N. Oak Ave. in Pasadena.

Donated funds help the Center fill in the gaps for this large event. Donors may contribute securely online by clicking the Do-nate Now Button on the Center’s website, www.foothillunitycenter.org, or its Facebook page. Checks may be mailed to Foothill Unity Center, 415 West Chestnut Avenue, Monro-via CA, 91016.

Adopt an angel, bring joy to a child

The Center has launched its 2010 An-gel Program — an annual community tradition that helped provide toys and clothing for 3,040 children

of low-income families last year. The Center needs volunteers to decorate the paper angels, which fea-ture labels with client chil-dren’s gift wishes. It also invites everyone to adopt angel(s) and shop for the children’s gifts on them. (Many organizations and businesses adopt entire flights of angels during the holidays.) Angels can be ordered and picked up at the Center’s Monrovia and Pasadena locations.

Now in its thirtieth year, Foothill Unity Cen-ter, as the Community Action Agency for the Foothill Area provides a range of crisis services to help low-income families survive these times. Op-erating with a small staff and a corps of dedicated volunteers, the nonprofit, nondenominational orga-nization distributed over four million pounds of food to 3,974 unduplicated very low-income families in Pasadena, Altadena, South Pasadena, Monrovia, Arca-dia, Duarte, Sierra Madre, Bradbury, Baldwin Park, Irwindale and Azusa last year. The Center also pro-vides some health services, limited motel vouchers, and referrals to the home-less and people in crisis. Clients must meet low-income guidelines and are recertified annually. Over 93% of every dollar goes to programs. To learn more, receive services, donate or volunteer, call the Center at (626) 358-3486.

The Pasadena Commu-nity Orchestra begins its 27th season at 8:00 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5 with a program of masterpiece quality, a con-ductor in his third season, and a soloist from the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

The Pasadena Com-munity Orchestra continues its tradition of presenting the most celebrated classi-cal music in the program that opens their four-concert series at the First Church of the Nazarene in Pasadena. From the Romantic era, the hundred year span from 1815-1915, the orchestra

will perform works by Lalo (“Overture to Le Roi d’Ys”) and Tchaikovsky (“Sleeping Beauty” selections) and, with violin soloist Mischa Lefkow-itz, Schubert’s Rondo in A-major. From the earlier clas-sical period, Lefkowitz will perform Joseph Haydn’s Concerto No. 2 in G-major.

Violinist Lefkowitz, a member of the L A Philhar-monic since 1977, is a highly honored musician who has appeared as soloist interna-tionally with such orchestras as the London Philharmon-ic, Detroit Symphony and performed in the most presti-

gious music and chamber se-ries world wide. He records on the Laurel, Cambria Se-quence and Pantheon labels.

Conductor of the Pasa-dena Community Orchestra is Alan Reinecke who took the reins of the orchestra from the founder of the or-chestra, his father, Wayne Reinecke two seasons ago. Alan Reinecke is a busy freelance musician as a per-cussionist. But in his first two seasons, he won plaudits for his easy and collaborative style of conducting. Under his direction, the ensemble of serious musicians, num-bering around 70, continues to thrive as it successfully serves the community with its excellence.

The Board of Directors of the orchestra includes Bette Solomon, President, and Raffi Balian, Fritzie Cu-lick, Don Fisher, Sally Hall, Levon H. Keshishian, Susie Kyropoulos, JoAnne Lazar, and Mark Nakatani.

All concerts of the Pasa-dena Community Orchestra are offered free to the public. Additional concert dates are Jan. 28, 2011, March 25 and May 20.

The First Church of the Nazarene is located at 3700 E. Sierra Madre Blvd., Pasadena near the corner of Michillinda and Sierra Madre Blvd. Information: (626) 445-6708.

Los Angeles Philharmonic violinist Mischa Lefkow-itz performs the music of Schubert and Haydn with the Pasadena Community Orchestra on Nov. 5.

A man who allegedly abducted his two young sons in Anaheim is being held in Texas after turning himself in, but his two chil-dren and their grandfather remain at large.

The suspects allegedly abducted the boys and then went to the Monrovia home of Abraham Fernan-dez’s cousin, Linda Fer-nandez, and her husband, David Daniel Nicholas.

Abraham Fernandez was being held on a $1 mil-lion warrant after surren-dering to sheriff’s deputies in Harris County Tuesday. An extradition hearing for Fernandez is set for Thurs-day. Fernandez is charged with two felony counts of kidnapping and two felony counts of child abduction and could face up to nine years and eight months in prison if convicted, ac-

cording to Orange County prosecutors.

The children have not been located, nor has their grandfather, Louis Mendo-za Fernandez.

The men are accused of taking Abraham Fernan-dez’s children -- 4-year-old Jacob Quinones and 2-year-old Justin Quinones -- from their mother in Anaheim on Oct. 7.

Ask any person who wants to lose weight where they want to see the most change and the majority will answer “I want a flat stomach”. From child-hood to young adult hood, we do not seem to have a problem maintaining a flat stomach, yet it seems to be the first thing to deterio-rate. Here are some point-ers to improve the appear-ance of the mid-section. No exercise regime should be attempted without a consultation and consent from your physician.

1. Body-Fat loss:Reducing overall body

fat will reduce the mid-sec-tion. The body cannot be “spot-trained” to lose only in one place, so 30 minutes of cardio vascular activity every day is a really good place to start losing body-fat from all over.

2. Strengthening:The muscular struc-

ture of the body is de-signed to work in symme-try and when one muscle group becomes weak or tight, the opposing group is also affected. Poor pos-ture is often responsible for a pooch. When the rectus abdominus (abs) are weak and allowed to hang, the erector spinae (lower back) becomes tight and weak. This, in turn, results in an anterior pelvic tilt facilitating a hanging stom-ach. Performing specific exercises to strengthen

the abdominals and the lower back can improve posture and reduce the appearance of a rounded stomach. These exercises do not flatten the stomach by themselves! By far the best exercises are func-tional exercises that focus on the core (torso). This is because they are multi-joint and muscle exercises that increase the heart rate and burn far more overall calories than just an ab-machine or crunches.

3. Nutrition:Eating a healthy, bal-

anced diet is paramount to achieving a flatter stom-ach. In fact, the above two activities will not produce premium results without proper nutrition. Many foods are responsible for keeping weight on the mid-section: saturated fats, alcohol, sugar and sodium are among the main of-fenders.

4. Stand up, sit down, draw in:

We are a nation of sitters: car, office and sofa (usually in that order and then repeat the next day). In a seated position, our abdominals are not forced to engage unless we are sitting in a strict, upright position. When the ab-dominals are not working neither is the lower back and they position them-selves in a lazy slouch. When sitting up straight, draw the bellybutton to

the spine without holding the breath. This exercise is designed to make you aware of your posture and help stop your abdominals and lower back from be-coming lazy.

5. WaterDrinking lots of wa-

ter a day can help allevi-ate water retention which often settles around the abdominal area. The National Association of Sports Medicine recom-mends 96 oz per day for an active person but check with a physician or nutri-tionist to find out optimum water intake.

Remember, there is no fast track to a flatter stomach, it takes time and perseverance. Strong ab-dominals and lower back muscles are key to fighting back pain, poor posture and an unsightly bulge.

Jason Aaron Goldberg's “The Confessions Of Deacon Jim”

Featuring Eric Close And Jonathan TuckerKicks Off The Fall 2010 Hothouse Season

On October 28 & 29At The Playhouse's Carrie Hamilton Theatre

Pasadena Playhouse (Sheldon Epps, Artistic Di-rector and Stephen Eich, Executive Director) an-nounced today that its new play development program, HOTHOUSE AT THE PLAYHOUSE, resumes this fall and will be pro-duced in collaboration with Furious Theatre Company (Pasadena Playhouse’s

Artists in Residency since 2004). Furious co-founder Dámaso Rodriguez will head the HOTHOUSE program and is set to direct the fall 2010 season’s first reading The Confessions of Deacon Jim by Jason Aaron Goldberg on Octo-ber 28-29, 2010 at Pasadena Playhouse’s Carrie Ham-ilton Theatre (39 South El Molino). The reading will feature Eric Close (CBS’s “Without a Trace”) and Jonathan Tucker (The Tex-as Chainsaw Massacre).

“I am so very pleased that we will be reigniting our new play development program here at the Play-house, as well as continuing and expanding our strong and valuable alliance with Furious Theatre Company. The nurturing of new work has been central to the mis-sion of this theatre ever since I came here, and Furi-ous has certainly displayed their skill and expertise in this area,” said Sheldon Epps, Pasadena Playhouse Artistic Director. “In addi-tion, I am very happy that this joint venture allows me to continue a valuable asso-ciation with Dámaso whose passion for the work and skill as a director I so greatly

admire. Once again, I must also express my extreme gratitude to the Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust for their incredibly generous support of our theatre’s endeavors in the area of new play develop-ment.”

Dámaso Rodriguez said, “Furious ensemble members have a history of

working in the Hothouse program on both Playhouse and Furious projects. A notable Furious/Playhouse Hothouse collaboration was the development of Matt Pelfrey’s No Good Deed, which benefited from a Hothouse reading in 2009 and will be produced by Furious in spring 2011. We are thrilled to be con-tinuing and expanding our relationship with Pasadena Playhouse and are grateful to Sheldon, Stephen, and the Playhouse Board for their visionary commitment to this too-rare partnership model.”

HOTHOUSE AT THE PLAYHOUSE is funded by the Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust, which will support the upcoming season of new play development readings at Pasadena Play-house’s Carrie Hamilton Theatre.

This season, the HOT-HOUSE will kick off with The Confessions of Deacon Jim by Jason Aaron Gold-berg on October 28 & 29 at 8:00 p.m.. Rodriguez will direct this true western tale for the stage about in-famous outlaw Jim Miller featuring Eric Close (CBS’s

“Without a Trace” and Jon-athan Tucker (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre). The additional play readings for fall 2010 will be announced at a later date.

HOTHOUSE AT THE PLAYHOUSE began in 2005 and has supported the development of over 40 new plays. Each Hothouse project is tailored to the

play’s unique development needs and can include FREE public readings, pri-vate workshops or full pro-ductions on the main stage. Hothouse also focuses on expanding opportunities for minority playwrights. Recent Hothouse plays to receive full productions on the Playhouse main stage include Can-Can; Ray Charles LIVE!; The Night is a Child; Looped, star-ring Valerie Harper, which opened on Broadway in February 2009 and gar-nered a 2010 Tony nomi-nation; and Sister Act, The Musical, which has been playing on the West End since June 2009 and will open on Broadway at the Broadway Theatre on April 20, 2011.

HOTHOUSE AT THE PLAYHOUSE read-ings take place at Pasadena Playhouse’s Carrie Hamil-ton Theatre, 39 S. El Mo-lino Avenue in Pasadena. Each reading will begin at 8pm, and a complimentary wine reception will follow. Tickets are FREE and reser-vations are required. Tick-ets are available by email request only at [email protected].

City of Hope knows that fighting one women’s cancer at a time is not enough. To advance life-saving research and ensure women everywhere benefit from new and improved therapies, City of Hope’s Los Angeles Walk for Hope is expanding to fund re-search for breast and gyne-cological cancers. On Sun-day, November 7, at City of Hope in Duarte, Calif., thousands of survivors and supporters take steps to support lifesaving re-search at City of Hope, one of the nation’s leading cancer research and treatment centers. To register for the Walk or donate, visit www.walk-4hope.org.

On the day of the event, Walkers will cel-ebrate their suc-cess. Together, these committed individuals plan to raise $1 mil-lion in support of City of Hope’s women’s cancers program.

The 5K and Leisure Walk routes wind through the beautiful City of Hope campus, where discover-ies of tomorrow happen today. Event festivities in-clude sponsor giveaways, a survivors’ pavilion, live music and entertainment, a kids’ area, team photos and more. Registration for the Walk opens at 8 a.m. The Walk begins at 10 a.m.

This year, the Los An-geles Walk for Hope is lo-cally presented by Albert-sons/Sav-on Pharmacy. The

Greater Los Angeles New Car Dealers Association, Wells Fargo and Papermate are also local sponsors. Walk for Hope is nationally presented by Staples and nationally sponsored by Farmer’s Insurance Group and Ladies’ Home Journal.

Walk for Hope is the nation’s only series of walks that that directly ben-efit research, treatment and education program for can-cers unique to women.

In 2010, more than 207,000 new cases of wom-en’s breast cancer and more than 84,000 new cas-es of gynecological cancers are expected to be diag-nosed in the U.S. Walk for Hope’s expanded focus on gynecological cancers will deepen researchers’ un-derstanding of the biology of women’s cancers to en-hance treatment.

“Research at City of Hope not only focuses on developing new treatments for women with breast and gynecological cancers, but also addresses ways to improve these patients’

quality of life,” said Joanne Mortimer, M.D., director of City of Hope’s Women’s Cancers Program. “These cancers attack the body and the soul, undermining how women see themselves at their very core and how they relate to their families and friends. We are com-mitted to both curing and healing the whole patient.”

As part of this com-mitment, City of Hope’s Women’s Cancers Pro-

gram is an inter-disciplinary effort that brings together researchers and cli-nicians to improve outcomes for these cancers. Research-ers are investigat-ing risk factors for breast, ovarian and endometrial cancers as well as interventions that could reduce those risks. Researchers also are identifying potential therapies, including targeted treatments, and pre-vention methods, and exploring the

challenges experienced by women to help ease the complications survivors may face.

“We’re thrilled to have the support of Walk for Hope. The money our walkers and their donors provide will give us the boost we need to help even more women live longer, healthier lives,” said Mor-timer.

In its 16-year history, Walk for Hope has raised more than $29 million for breast cancer research, treatment and education.

The exciting and glam-orous Crystal Ball for 2010 was a tremendous success, doubling the financial take from last year. This was due in part to the generous Grand Sponsors: the Hon-orable Mike Antonovich and Christine Antonovich; Arthur Liu and Angela Y. Fu; Cole and Cindy Harris; Panda Restaurant Group, Inc.; Jackson Wen and So-phia Li Wen, and Hing

Chung Wong, M.D., and US TOPCO Energy, Inc.

Also to the Celebrity Chair, Christine Antonov-ich, the First Lady of Los Angeles County, and her co-chair Dr. Richard Sun, who headed up a V.I.P. committee.

The night always kicks off the pre-holiday social season for the Arcadia-Pas-adena area.

The mix of the Beach

Boys persona and music with the sophisticated audi-ence, including the man in full tuxedo attire with high top tennis shoes, and ambi-ence of the setting turned out to be a match made for a fantastic evening where guests stormed the dance floor and fused together in a giant wave of revelry.

Kathleen Ellison, the honoree and a long time member of the Foundation

Board of Directors, look-ing radiant in a charcoal colored designer gown, was introduced by Chairman of the Board John Wuo.

The auction was fast paced and had fantastic items upon which to bid. The wonderful ending to this dazzling night is – the monies go to the Compre-hensive Cardiac Care Pro-gram at Methodist Hospital.

The Tournament of Roses revealed to-day that Paula Deen

is going to whip up some friendships, fold in some dreams and roll out some memories on New Year’s Day as the Grand Marshal of the 2011 Rose Parade® festivities. Themed Build-ing Dreams, Friendships & Memories, the 2011 Rose Parade presented by Honda will pay tribute to the mil-lions of people worldwide whose dreams create the foundation for America’s New Year Celebration® and the lifetime friendships and memories that are cre-ated by volunteers, partici-pants and fans.

As Grand Marshal, Paula Deen will ride in the 122nd Rose Parade pre-sented by Honda in front of a worldwide television audience, and toss the coin before the 97th Rose Bowl Game® presented by VIZIO on January 1, 2011.

“Paula Deen is a true icon and the perfect person to serve as the Grand Mar-shal for our theme Build-ing Dreams, Friendships & Memories,” said Jeffrey

L. Throop, president of the Tournament of Roses. “An American sweetheart and a true success story, Paula Deen embodies what it means to build a dream into reality. She has shared her friendships and memo-ries with us all through her down-to-earth cooking and treasured recipes and we can’t wait to build memo-

ries together with her on New Year’s Day.”

“I am so thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of such a special American tradition that brings such joy to so many every year,” said Grand Marshal Paula Deen. “In my house, the Rose Pa-rade and the Rose Bowl Game have always been a grand tradition for ringing in

the New Year. To serve as Grand Marshal is a dream come true and I look for-ward to sharing the celebra-tion with all of the fans and viewers worldwide.”

Paula Deen is the quint-essential American success story. From humble begin-nings as a young divorcee and mother of two boys on a shoestring budget, the Al-

bany, Ga., native parlayed $200 and her love of cook-ing into a home-based meal delivery service called “The Bag Lady.” With the help of her two sons Jamie and Bob-by, Deen delivered home-made brown-bag lunches to local businesses. The busi-ness didn’t stay small for long, gaining momentum and great popularity, leading Deen to open her first restau-rant, The Lady and Sons, in Savannah, Ga.

The authentic Southern cooking was a hit with pa-trons and the media alike. In 1999, USA Today food critic Jerry Shriver named

The Lady and Sons “Inter-national Meal of the Year.”

The success of the res-taurant paved the way for Paula Deen’s work in pub-lishing. She has sold more than eight million books and launched her bimonth-ly magazine title, Cooking With Paula Deen, read by more than one million read-ers.

In addition to her ex-ceptional culinary talents, Deen’s warm personality, grounded nature and infec-tious love of food and family

Having hailed from Great Britain, I have always been

rather partial to a nice cup of tea. However after seeing the tactics of that last bastion of “fair and balanced” jour-nalism - FOX news – I’ve developed rather a bitter taste in my mouth when it comes to Tea Time. The FOX propelled TEA party , extreme right wing fanat-ics have really given me a distinct abhorrence for the aforementioned staple of the British Empire.

The bitter taste of the so called “tea party” leaves lit-tle to the imagination and an great deal of questions about what is right and that which is so very, very wrong.

There are some who claim they are a “proud member of the Angry Mob” referring to that inglorious bastard child of the GOP–The Tea Party… but what the heck does anger and violence accomplish? One such Tea Party supporter caught my attention recently on a debatable, anonymous comment driven, blog which seems devoted to bashing four members of the current city council in Si-erra Madre and singing the praises of one who happens to be, you guessed it, a Tea Party supporter.

If you read between the thinly veiled tea-leaf lines of these contributors and the blog’s moderator, one can quickly see the insuf-ferable and those who hold the same philosophy dear to their tell tale hearts.

The racist, anti-gay, anti-muslim and pro-life rhetoric of The Tea Party is blatant and very disturbing - certain-ly getting a lot of attention in the days leading up to the mid terms.

Without pointing too many fingers or naming too many names, there is a moderately tepid Tea Party contingent in Pasadena and Sierra Madre. Former Si-erra Madre Mayor (now a council member) Mary Ann MacGillivray, De and Pat Alcorn among others in Sierra Madre are staunch supporters of the Tea Party according to the Pasadena Patriots’ website. They may think they’ll take back something, but what? Sadly, the so called Family Values of the Tea Party appear per-

verse to an ever growing number of undecided vot-ers. It seems their number one goal is to keep President Obama as a one term Presi-dent. It seems the TP will do anything to undermine the President’s authority and do whatever it takes to get their TP candidate heard.

On Tuesday , video

cameras captured the 23-year-old MoveOn.org activist, Lauren Valle, be-ing wrestled to the ground after Rand Paul supporters removed a blonde wig she had been wearing. A man — later identified as Tim Profitt — was seen stepping on the woman’s neck repeatedly in a violent manner. Profitt has since apologized for the incident, but was given a criminal summons Tuesday to appear in court.

Ironically, one of those captured on video tape dur-ing Tuesdays Rand Paul madness was wearing a T shirt that stated one of the Tea Party slogans – “Don’t Tread on Me!”

This is not the first inci-dence of violence from the Tea Party:

Consequently I’m of-fering , for your consider-ation, my own grassroots political movement – I think I’ll call it the Bloody Silly

Party. For my newly formed BS party, I plan on having coffee klatches outside City Hall at precisely 11 am daily and we’ll talk of why the country is really falling apart. We can, hopefully, be of assistance those politi-cians and their ever so blind supporters to “take back” all the dense , obtuse and ill-ad-

vised comments they have uttered during this highly contentious and somewhat comical mid-term election.

I’ll attempt to put hu-mor in my new found party – replacing the violence and hatred seems which to be so common in the Tea Party.

If these guys put one tenth of the money and en-ergy they spend on attack ads trying to help their fellow man…… My Goodness…... If only! If only the TP didn’t try to suppress the press as it did recently by handcuffing a reporter trying to cover a Tea Party candidate.

How could anyone in his or her right mind want to vote for a Gubernatorial candidate who threatened to “Take Out” a Newsday reporter . And , no, I don’t think ( the threat ) was an offer of a date. But then again, Carl likes the family unit: Carl Paladino believes so strongly in Family Values

that he has two families. One with his wife, another with his mistress.

It has come to my atten-tion that one TEAPAC sup-porter in Sierra Madre has apparently turned her house into a precinct office for Can-didate Tim Donnely who is a proud Minuteman hop-ing to get Anthony Adam’s

seat. He (Donnoly) even has a picture of himself smiling next to notorious Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who is NOT smiling. Arpaio, you may recall, gained national attention for his relentless pursuit of illegal immigrants, but now the hard-line law-man finds himself under investigation for possibly breaking civil rights laws.

It gets better:Former Minuteman

Tim Donnoly who really wants Anthony Adams’ seat said he’ll “annihilate the enemies of freedom and pound them into the ground to take back the power” recently according to one reliable news source. See it yourself on You Tube.

Now there’s a man who wears his pants the way the Christine O’Donnell likes ‘em worn: Here’s what Tea Party Christine had to say about her opponent Mike Castle recently:

“You know, these are the kind of cheap, underhanded, un-manly tactics that we’ve come to expect from Obama’s favorite Republican, Mike Castle,” said O’Donnell. “You know, I released a statement today, saying Mike this is not a bake-off, get your man-pants on.”

—Christine O’Donnell,

on Castle’s allegation that she illegally coordinated campaign activities with the Tea Party Express

How about Nevada GOP senate candidate Sharron Angle who has tried her best to avoid the press: “People ask me, ‘What are you going to do to develop jobs in your state? “Well, that’s not my job as a U.S. senator.” –Sharron Angle, May 14, 2010 or my person-al favorite: “We needed to have the press be our friend ... We wanted them to ask the questions we want to an-swer so that they report the news the way we want it to be reported.” --Sharron An-gle, during an interview with Fox News Channel’s Carl Cameron, Aug. 2, 2010

The late night talk show writers and political pundits are having a great deal of fun with the Tea Party. Truth, in fact, is far more alien than the fiction the right wing

wants the majority of Ameri-cans to believe.

Here is one of the Tea Partys’ darling’s, Sarah Pal-in’s finest moments:

‘’Well, let’s see. There’s — of course in the great history of America there have been rulings that there’s never going to be abso-lute consensus by every American, and there are those issues, again, like Roe v. Wade, where I believe are best held on a state level and addressed there. So, you know, go-ing through the history of America, there would be others but —’’

—Sarah Palin, unable to name a Supreme Court decision she disagreed with other than Roe vs. Wade, interview with Katie Couric, CBS News, Oct. 1, 2008

Finally, I share this clas-sic from a gubernatorial can-didate Meg Whitman for the state of California where unemployment is at an all time high:

“China is unique. It is grow-ing rapidly, and it has a tremen-dous amount of potential, which is why we have made it a priority for the company.”

Sex , Lies and video-taped violence against those who don’t believe in the Tea Party line: It’s all here in living color, on You Tube on every tube every night of the week. The like’s of Christine O’Donnell, Sha-ron Angle, John Colbert, Meg Whitman, Alvaro

Day, Tim Donnoly and a cast of thousands spewing the tea party propaganda.

At the recent “Tea Party Express “ stop outside the Rose Bowl, proud support-ers of FOX news were wear-ing their gladrags proudly

In the immortal words of someone, somewhere recently who was doing a marvelous parody on Fox’s teary-eyed Bulldog - Glenn Beck …

“Remember, the Ma-jority of Tea Parties are still being put on by little girls.”

I rest my case!

Editor’s Note: We know there are always two sides to every story, sometime there may be three. We’d love to hear your thoughts on the upcoming election…let us know what you think!

To Tea or Not to Tea - that my dear voters - is the Question!

Gregg Smith ( founders of the Smith Brothers).

The selection of foods and wines, at this, one of Pasadena’s most prestigious and fun fundraising events is the culmination of years of hard work of the 2010 Fall Food and Wine Commit-tee members, Garrett Bell and Linda Barker Co-Chairs along with a host of others.

In addition to being a major trauma unit Hunting-ton Memorial Hospital’s stroke program received the Gold Seal of Approval from the Joint Commission, desig-nating the hospital a primary stroke center last year. This means Huntington will join the network of “approved stroke center” hospitals throughout Los Angeles County.

This is a significant mile-stone for the hospital, but more important, a wonder-ful benefit for Pasadena and

its surrounding communi-ties,” said Arbi Ohanian, M.D., medical director of Huntington’s stroke center. “Huntington’s program is distinguished by its compre-hensiveness. We offer mul-tidisciplinary excellence in every aspect of stroke treat-ment and leading-edge tech-nology that makes a huge difference when it comes to stroke diagnosis and care.”

Ohanian is one of the country’s few neurologists fellowship-trained in stroke care. He, along with a team of neurologists and neuro-surgeons, collaborate with emergency department phy-sicians and neuroradiolo-gists to ensure best practice protocols are implemented throughout the course of care.

A 320 detector multi-modal CT scanner and in-terventional suites equipped with biplane angiography

also set Huntington’s pro-gram apart as does its dedi-cated inpatient stroke unit. Patients presenting in the emergency department with acute stroke may receive a range of therapies includ-ing: intravenous tissue plas-minogen activator (tPA), a clot busting medication, or interventional device treat-ments such as the Penumbra and MERCI clot retrieval systems.

The goal of the Coun-ty’s stroke center hospital network is to ensure patients are taken to a facility that can provide a continuum of care reducing transfers and valu-able time-to-treatment. The fact that Huntington Hospital is now an approved stroke center means residents of the San Gabriel and San Fer-nando Valleys will not have to travel far to receive the highest quality of care.

The Monrovia Unified School District has partnered with the Santa Anita Family YMCA and the Network for Healthy California to collect “extra” Halloween candy on November 1st at every elementary school and the Canyon Early Learning Cen-ter. From 7:30 to 7:50 a.m. on that Monday designated representatives will be at the schools collecting the candy.

For each pound of can-dy a student donates, he or she will receive a raffle ticket. Each school will conduct

a drawing for a new bike. The bikes were donated to the “Y” by the sponsors of the event, Dr. Paul Genino (a dentist of course), Sam Wright State Farm Insurance and Jesus is Lord Christian Center.

Nancy Rosa, Youth and Family coordinator at they said “Last year we collected over 13,000. This year we are going for a ton.” She explained that the “Y” was working to donate the candy to U.S. service personnel overseas, via camp Pendle-

Arcadia PDFor the period of Sun-

day, October 17, through Saturday, October 23, the Police Department respond-ed to 885 calls for service of which 137 required formal investigations. The follow-ing is a summary report of the major incidents handled by the Department during this period.

Sunday, October 17:Two intoxicated male

drivers were involved in separate traffic accidents and they were both arrested for DUI. A 30-year-old His-panic driver struck a curb, which caused his vehicle to overturn at Huntington and Baldwin around 1:58 a.m. Shortly after 4:00 a.m., a 23-year-old Asian driver also collided with a curb at Colo-rado and Harvard.

Around 4:42 p.m., units responded to Public Storage, 12340 Lower Azusa, regard-ing a burglary that occurred between April 1 and June 20. Unknown suspect(s) cut the padlock to a storage unit and stole safes, statues, and a laptop computer.

Monday, October 18:Between 6:00 p.m. on

October 17 and 7:30 a.m. on October 18, two auto bur-glaries were reported in the 800 block of West Hunting-ton. Unknown suspect(s) smashed car windows and stole a GPS unit from one vehicle and a portable gam-ing unit from another.

A grand theft occurred at the Disney Store located at Westfield Mall between 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Fif-teen Mickey Mouse watches were stolen from a display shelf for a reported loss of over $442.

Tuesday, October 19:Around 5:32 p.m., loss

prevention personnel from JC Penney advised that they had detained a man for theft. The suspect was seen selecting clothing items and then hiding them on his per-son and a bag that he had brought with him. A private person’s arrest was made, and a 25-year-old Hispanic was taken into custody for commercial burglary and for a $30,000 outstanding misdemeanor warrant. A stolen book from Border’s was also recovered.

Officers were dis-patched to the 100 block of White Oak around 5:30 p.m. in reference to a fraud. The elderly victim was

tricked into sending over $7,500 to Barcelona, Spain in order to bail his grandson out of jail. Unknown sus-pects called and claimed to be representatives from the U.S. Embassy in Spain and instructed the victim on how to complete wire transfers of funds. After the victim sent the money through Western Union, he discovered that his grandson was not in jail and has never been to Spain.

Wednesday, October 20:A residential burglary

occurred between 1:55 p.m. and 2:50 p.m. in the 300 block of San Antonio. Un-known suspect(s) entered the home via an unsecured kitchen window and stole a large amount of expen-sive jewelry, Cartier and Piaget watches, and several Hermes handbags.

Between 10:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., another residen-tial burglary occurred in the 1100 block of Arcadia. Un-known suspect(s) pried open the front door to gain entry. Once inside, the suspect(s) ransacked rooms and stole numerous jewelry items.

Thursday, October 21:Around 1:33 p.m., of-

ficers responded to First Avenue Middle School in reference to an alleged child abuse case. Investigation re-vealed that an 11-year-old fe-male student was struck sev-eral times with a hairbrush by her father for lying about a homework assignment. The student sustained visible injuries and the Department of Children and Family Ser-vices was notified. She was taken into protective cus-tody, and her 32-year-old father was arrested for child cruelty.

A burglary occurred around 6:00 p.m. in the 800 block of West Huntington. A female victim parked her car in her garage after run-ning errands and cashing a check at a bank. She left the garage door open and once she exited the vehicle to walk towards the entry way, a male Hispanic suspect ran in and took her purse from the front passenger seat. The suspect then fled in an older white four-door sedan driven by another sus-pect. The total loss was over $2,900.

Friday, October 22:A victim came to the sta-

tion around 5:52 p.m. to file a fraud report. She received phone calls from Macy’s, Chase, and Discover on Sep-

tember 28 and 29 asking if she had made over $3,600 in recent credit card purchases. She checked her accounts and discovered all the unau-thorized transactions.

Shortly after 6:50 p.m., units responded to Santa Anita Inn, 130 West Hun-tington, regarding suspicious persons in the area. Joseph Benjamin Rags-dale was born in Ten-nessee in 1911 and

passed away here earlier this month. True to his south-ern roots, Joe was always a gentleman with courtly man-ners. He was born in Martin, Tennessee on September 11, 1911 remaining on his home state, he married Doris “Dee Dee” Baxter and together they had three daughters, Bil-lie, Ginger and Linda and a son, Joseph Benjamin Rags-dale Jr.

The family moved to California during World War II when Ragsdale was hired as the procurement officer at Norton AFB. His daughter, Linda recalled first arriving in California and her father remarking “look at those mountains; smell the orange blossoms.” She recalled that her father had a deep love of nature and instilled that loved in his entire family. But that was only one of the values he imparted to his children.

His brother John said that “ethics” was the first word that came to mind when he thought of his brother. “I may be a foot taller than Joe, but I always looked up to my big brother,” he said. “In the south we say ‘A man is as good as his word;’ with my brother that was true. His handshake was as good as a contract.”

John also told a story about the faith he has in his brother who was 13 year old than he. “I always knew I could trust Joe, and so I went to him one Christmas time when I was about 5 or 6 and asked him about Santa Claus. He told me Santa liked to do things for children who deserved. I told him I wanted to meet Santa, but he explained that Santa was kind of shy. However, on Christmas Eve I was in my room when Joe yelled from the front room, ‘Johnny, Johnny come quick.’ I raced into the room and Joe turned away from the window and told me I had just missed Santa. I knew I could always trust my brother, and so to this day, even thought I am 85 years old, on Christmas Eve, someone says ‘There’s Santa,’ I turn around.”

Ragsdale’s oldest daughter, Billie said reiter-ated that credo by which he lived and which he passed on to all his children, “He used to tell us ‘be honest, have in-tegrity in everything you do and when you finish your

work, find something else to do.’”

His daughter Linda said that her father didn’t just live by the ethics he imparted to his children. She recalled that the whole family would sit around the dinner table after the meal and discuss ethics.

All his daughters point-ed out that their father was more than just an ethical man. “He was a real stick-

ler for the rules,” Linda said, adding, He was a real com-petitor, but a fair one.” His daughter Billie remembered the hand slapping game they played. Joe would hold his hands out, palms up, and his daughter would try to hit them. “I never hit his hands,” she said.

Ragsdale is well remem-bered as the manager of the Sherwin Williams Paint store on Myrtle Avenue here in Monrovia, a position he held for 30 years. Recently at the all class reunion of MAD high school, a member of the class of ‘50 was reminiscing and asked about “Mr. Ragsdale.” The man said “He gave me my first real job and my work ethic. I’ve done well and he gave me the basis.”

Even after he retired from his work at Sherwin Williams, Ragsdale was not ready to completely retire and so began working at Century 21 Real Estate with Tom Adams. He was in-volved in organized real es-tate for many years receiving his real estate license in 1972 and continuing on until rec-ognized as a “Life Member” of the California Association of Realtors. At the age of 95 Ragsdale received a stand-ing ovation from over 800 attendees at the Century 21 Regional Awards Dinner for

achieving membership in the Masters Awards Club for that year. Of Ragsdale, Tom said, “I had the distinct honor of calling Joe my friend; he is missed”

He was not all work. Ragsdale was a long standing member of the Rotary Club of Monrovia, serving as its President in 1955/1956. He was also very active in the board of Santa Anita Fam-ily YMCA and served with

distinction during the time when it gained its i n d e p e n -dence from Pasadena in 1999. He was a life member of the Elks, a past mem-ber of the K i w a n i s . He was a long time member of the Monro-via Tennis Club where he played tennis into

his early 80’s. He was a member of the Monrovia Dance Club. He and his wife DeeDee were outstanding ballroom dancers. Ragsdale was also active in the Monro-via Chambers of Commerce.

Music was a large part of his life and always in his home. He began playing the piano when he was 7 years old and later put together a band while he was in col-lege. For many years he was involved in the musical pro-ductions at Royal Oaks Man-or. Joe loved house boating, camping, and fishing with family and friends and trav-eling the world with his wife DeeDee who proceeded him in death.

Above all else, he was re-alist. His brother said that fac-ing reality was part of who he was. “He came up through the depression years. He was a realist and he wanted to face reality.” His friend Tom Adams, who reported on Joe’s condition each week at Rotary that shortly before he died, Ragsdale had told him “I’m tired of this.”

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends and the community which he so dearly loved. He was preceded in death by his parents May Bell and John Adam Ragsdale, his son Jo-seph Benjamin Ragsdale, Jr.

and his wife of 47 years, Do-ris “Dee Dee” Walter Baxter Ragsdale. He is survived by his brother John Adam Rags-dale, Jr. of San Bernardino, California, daughters, Billie Dahl of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Virginia “Ginger” Anderson of Laguna Woods, California, Linda and James Mueller of Flagstaff, Arizona, Daughter-in law Sherry Rags-dale of Whittier, California, Stepson John Thurlow and Gloria Baxter of, Prescott Arizona, 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 15 great, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The Celebration of life for Joseph B. Ragsdale will be Friday, October 29th at 6:30. The location will be at the Monrovia Historical Mu-seum at 742 E. Lemon Ave., Monrovia, CA 91016. Do-nations may be made to the Santa Anita Family YMCA at 501 S. Mountain Ave., Monrovia, CA 91016.

Another friend, Steve Baker put it succinctly: “The world is poorer without Joe in it.”

The Sierra Madre Chamber of Commerce an-nounced that shuttle tickets to ride up to view the Wistar-ia Vine at its annual Wistaria Festival are now available online. The 2011 Wistaria Festival will take place on March 20th, 2011.

The Wistaria Festi-val features tours of the world’s largest blossom-ing plant, certified as such by the Guinness Book of World Records. Each year, the property owners upon whose land the vine sits, the Solts and the Dorrances, open their property to allow thousands to view the vine. Dozens of Sierra Madre residents volunteer to act as docents at the property, telling the story of the vine, which was originally planted from a 1-gallon pot that was

purchased for $0.75 in 1894. At its peak, the vine cov-ered more than an acre of ground, and in the early 20th century was so large that it even destroyed a home that was under it.

In addition to the tours of the vine, the two main downtown streets of Sierra Madre are closed to traffic so that 175 juried crafters and artists can set up booths to display and sell their arts/crafts. Downtown village shops are open, and more than a dozen musical acts perform at five outdoor ven-ues. Memorial Park is trans-formed into a combination Kids/Food zone, as bouncy houses, slides, rock climbing and other kids attractions set up in the park alongside food vendors, both for profit and non-profit alike.

The shuttle to the vine from downtown avoids a long uphill walk from down-town to the neighborhood in which the vine sits. “Day of” tickets for the shuttle have been reduced from $15 to $12 this year, and pre-sale tickets are just $10. This year, for the first time, seniors and kids (6 to 16) receive a discounted rate of $7. Children under five ride for free. There is no charge to view the vine.

Beacon Media readers that purchase non-discount-ed ($10) pre-sale tickets on line can also receive a $1 savings on their ticket by entering promo code Bea-con01 on the ticket order page when prompted.

To order tickets online, visit www.WistariaTickets.com.

Kudos to 2010 Crystal Ball committee (from left: Kevin Yang, Meimei Liu, Evelyn Greathouse, Juliet Lu, Sue Hale, Jill Boli, Annie Teng, co-chairs Dr. Richard Sun and Christine Antonovich, Dr. K. Heiner Vogelbach, Angela Fu, C.H. Hsueh, Lulu Yuan, Susan Woo, Ivy Sun, and Sherry Wang.

In 2008, a domestic vio-lence situation that ended tragically in murder, spurred retired law enforcement officer Kim Plater to take action. Plater and another woman founded the Covina Woman’s Club Domestic Violence Action Coalition (DVAC). According to Plat-er, “The coalition formed to ensure the criminal justice system take responsibility for its actions and to confirm that what happened to mur-der victim Monica Thomas would not happen again.” Domestic violence includes not only physical abuse but also mental or emotional abuse of a family member or intimate partner.

Plater will speak at the Monday, November 8 meet-ing of the Arcadia Branch of the American Associa-tion of University Women (AAUW). The group meets at Church of the Good Shepherd’s Jordan Hall, 400 W. Duarte Rd., Arcadia (southwest corner of Duarte

Road and Holly Avenue). Socializing begins at 6:30 p.m. with program to fol-low at 7 p.m. The public is invited to the meeting at no charge, and ample parking is available.

Plater is eminently qual-ified to speak on the subject of domestic violence. She served as a police officer for Baldwin Park, a sergeant at Covina Police Department, and Chief of Police at Cal Poly Pomona. Plater is fre-quently in demand to speak on the Domestic Violence Action Coalition, which now has over 120 members from organizations nationwide. A question and answer period will follow the presentation.

To learn about mem-bership in the AAUW, call Tamara Kato at (626) 375-6756, or Patricia Dietrich at (626) 446-8437. Membership is open to women and men university graduates, as well as to those holding an As-sociate of Arts degree or its equivalent.

His Powerpoint talk covered past efforts and future research regarding water conservation and fire retardant plants. Jodi Little is president, and Ester Reynoso is program chair.

“Day After Day,” the magic of Doris Day musical at Sierra Madre Playhouse October 10th, delighted the audience with (l-r) co-stars Christy Mauro-Cohen, Tony Santamauro, musical direc-tor David Cohen, technical director Charles Offenhaus-er, and producer (Theater of Vision founder) Lani Ridley, at the helm. Light hearted with tunes sung by Doris Day. Great vintage costume changes.
