The chancellor of Cali-fornia Community Colleges is slated to retire as head Cali-fornia’s state college system.

Former State Senator Jack Scott has announced he’ll step down on Sept. 1, after nearly six decades in higher education and pub-lic service. Since becoming chancellor in January 2009, Scott has helped the 112-cam-pus community college sys-tem weather deep cuts in state funding that led to fee

increases, course cuts and re-duced enrollment.

The 78-year-old Scott has also focused on making it easier for community col-lege students to transfer to the University of California and California State University systems.

Scott spent 12 years in the state legislature, where he chaired the Senate Com-mittee on Education. Prior to this, Scott served as president of PCC and Cypress College.

Farhang Foundation, together with the Nowruz in Pasadena are putting the fin-ishing touches on the 6th An-nual Celebration of Nowruz (Iranian New Year) in Pasa-dena slated for March 15.

The celebration New Year and culture has become a tradition the City of Pasade-na thanks to one special wom-an, Nazee Rofagha DC, who six years ago had a unique vision to celebrate her culture while educating the commu-nity in a fun and stimulating environments.

However, no matter how you spell it, it all means the same thing - A Celebration of Iranian culture for the New Year .

Nowruz (Norooz) or No-rouz…..Not matter how you spell it, it all means the same tyhing. A Celebration of Irani-an culture for the New Year.

The colorful history of Iran will be fêted at the an-nual celebration of Nowruz March 15 at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, 150 North Madi-son Avenue in Pasadena.

Inspired , each year, by the ever-popular chiropractor Dr. Nazee Rofagha, the holi-day celebrates not only the Iranian New Year but the rich culture and diversity of Iran’s peoples.

There will be traditional dancing, customary foods .

Colonial Pharmacy is unquestionably Arcadia's oldest

pharmacy and has been serving the community since 1939. Sadly, the time had come for Arca-dia’s oldest purveyor of prescriptions and such to close its doors.

Colonial Pharmacy was quite literally, the corner pharmacy where you could really talk with friendly, knowledgable staff and pharmacists…a pharmacy where everyone knew your name and you weren’t just a number.

Owner Mark Burstyn has worked at Colonial Pharmacy since Octo-ber 1990 and purchased the pharmacy 1999 from George Sanders. Burstyn kept the character and am-biance of Colonial and was one of only a handful of tru-ly independent pharmacies in the San Gabriel Valley.

With the internet grow-ing exponentionally and people’s need to cut back on health care costs, destiny obviously played a signifi-cant role in Burstyn’s deci-sion.

Tyler Perry Strikes a Different Tone in His Latest Directorial Effort

FilM review By Michael JaMes Gonzalez

When I used to com-plain that I didn't have time to get all my chores done, my father-in-law would always remind me, "That's all right Dorothy, you don't want to finish your chores. When they are done, so are you."

He finished his chores in 1978. I miss him still and think of him often. We would sometimes laugh to-gether at things not everyone found laughable.

I received a photocopy recently of a cartoon I know would have evoked a chuck-le from him. It shows a har-ried, frazzled looking woman

with crossed eyes and turned down mouth. The side cap-tion reads, "God put me on Earth to accomplish a certain number of things...right now I'm so far behind I will never die." He would approve of that.

I love cartoons. Per-haps that is part of why I am behind. I'm always taking time to cut one out to send to someone or running out to copy the one that someone sent to me then send it on to another. That usually calls for more time to sit down and write a little note to up-date our lives. I consider that as time well spent but it does mean delaying some other chores.

Now and then I reach that point of being behind that calls for making lists and prioritizing. I make a column for things that Must be done right away, one for things that Should be done soon and

one for things to do When-ever I get to them. The col-umns are all rather long.

Then sometimes a friend calls and wants to do something really fun or relax-ing but definitely time con-suming. I groan and look at my lists.

There are bills to pay and much cleaning to do, laundry, and errands to run, a button to sew, a hem to re-pair, calls to make and more. I see myself as the frazzled gal in the cartoon.

I begin to shift jobs from one column to the other. Fi-nally the Must Do column is quite manageable, the Should Do produces a fleet-ing moment of guilt and the When I Get To It just grows and grows.

I tell my friend I'll meet her at noon. My father-in-law was right. I'm in no hurry to get my chores done.

Tyler Perry’s latest film is a refreshing depar-ture from his ‘Madea’ films and family melodra-mas. First, we have Perry as debonair leading man; sec-ond, we have a film that is somber, philosophical, and even political, with its focus on class differences. “Ty-ler Perry’s Good Deeds” centers on Wesley Deeds (Perry), an old-money, San Francisco CEO who has inherited not only millions of dollars but every aspect of his privileged life, which he feels is not his own. Out of a sense of duty toward his widowed, domineering mother (Phylicia Rashad), Deeds heads the family’s computer corporation while enduring his jealous, crazy brother Walt (Brian White) and stuck-up fiancé

(Gabrielle Union). He eats the same thing every day, keeps a rigorous sched-ule, and is always cool, calm, and collected. But Deeds’ sanitized world quickly begins to crack when he bumps into Lind-sey (Thandie Newton), a homeless but strong-willed single mother who works as a housekeeper in Deeds’ own building. Of course, Deeds determines to help Lindsey, and while doing so, a romance be-gins to blossom between them, prompting Deeds to reevaluate his life, which inevitably leads to the conflicts that arise from a one-percenter mixing with someone from the 99 per-cent. The film is shot with glossy, Hollywood stock, and every scene is lit like

a magazine cover, which gives it the dreamy qual-ity Perry no doubt was going for. All other cin-ematic aspects, however, seemed amateurish, espe-cially Perry’s heavy use of close-ups on himself—yes, we understand the charac-ter is contemplative— and certain scenes of dialogue run far too long, which bring the pace of the film to a crawl at times. The film is Perry’s best as far as themes go—the impor-tance of appreciating your significant other, the dispa-rate attitudes between the rich and the poor, and pur-suing your dreams despite outside resistance—but I yet look forward to a Tyler Perry having a good mes-sage as well as good film-making.

Dominic Lazzaretto will take over as Arca-dia’s new city manager on March 26, having been appointed to the position by the City Council last month. He replaces Don Penman who retired last November after 14 years with Arcadia, the last four as its City Manager.

Lazzaretto comes to his new post from La Palma, a city he describes as “not unlike Arcadia, just smaller.” There he was City Manger for over five and a half years of the nine he worked for that city. He started as an interim planner there in 2002 and worked up to being its Community De-velopment Director and then City Manager.

LA Palma is a com-munity of approximately 15,500 people in Northern Orange County. Lazza-retto said the like Arcadia, “It is a bedroom commu-

nity.” Arcadia has long

called itself a “Commu-nity of Homes.” La Palma is just such a community with just over 75% of it dedicated to residential property. His understand-ing of this type of com-munity will doubtless be useful in Lazzaretto’s new role.

“Residential areas do not pay for themselves,” Lazzaretto explained. “Businesses are needed to support the city. My job is to find the right balance for Arcadia.”

He explained that finding this balance would include determining what the city needs and balanc-ing that with what its resi-dents want.

Asked what plans he had for the Arcadia, Laz-zaretto said that was not his understanding of his role. “As City Manager, it is my job to understand what the City Council wants and to help them implement that.”

He is aware ot the issues facing the commu-nity and the council” the coming of the Gold Line and what it will mean to Arcadia, the use of excess area at the race track, the possible expansion of Rus-nack motors, the potential and/or need of develop-ing a stronger downtown. Asked his position on these issues, he reiterated that that was not his role. “That is not the City Man-ager’s job,” he said.

Lazzaretto knows well what being a city manager means. Not only did he hold that position in La

Palma and restaurant man-agement. He majored in that field at Penn State University, but a degree was not all he found in Happy Valley. Appropri-ately it was there he met his future wife, Christine. She now works locally as an advocate for historic preservation.

“I finally joined the family business in 1994,” said of his change of ca-reer, meaning that he be-gan working in his father’s consulting firm, A. C. Laz-zaretto & Associates. The firm specializes in assist-ing cities in administration and management, espe-cially community develop-ment. From there it was a small step to his position at La Palma.

Lazzaretto has not left behind all that originally interested him in the res-taurant field: of his hob-bies he mentioned cook-ing first. He says he and his wife also enjoy travel-ing and skiing. His other athletic interests include cycling and running. Ar-cadia is not unfamiliar to Lazzaretto; for the last several years he has par-ticipated in an “over 30” soccer league which plays part of the year at Arcadia High School.

When Lazzaretto takes over as Arcadia’s City Manager, perhaps his early training at Penn State will be an asset. In essence, Lazzaretto will be become the concierge for over fifty thousand people, the residents of Arcadia.

The Pasadena Police Department received infor-mation from an anonymous informant who knew the whereabouts of murder sus-pect, Raul A. Romero, who was hiding in Jalisco, Mexico. The U.S. Marshalls Office was given the information for investigation. The Marshalls conducted interviews and orchestrated the capture of Raul Alcazar Romero, MH 56. The arrest was in coop-eration with Mexican authori-ties and Romero was arrested and jailed in Mexico for the past year.

The U.S. Marshalls and

the Los Angeles County Dis-trict Attorney’s Office have been relentless in the process-ing of the extradition of Sus-pect Romero. On March 2, 2012, Romero was extradited and flown to the Los Angeles Airport to face United States persecution for the 1995 mur-der of Francisco Mora, MH 36 a Pasadena Resident.

Suspect Romero was booked in the Pasadena City jail. On Friday, March 2, 2012, Romero will be ar-raigned at the Pasadena Superior Court on Monday March 5, 2012.

On April 21, 1995, Fran-

cisco Mora was murdered at Cal Tech, 1201 E. California Blvd. Suspect Romero ap-proached Victim Mora while he was sitting by the loading dock having lunch with co-workers. Romero shot Mora several times and fled the scene. Romero became jeal-ous of the victim who was having lunch with Romero’s ex-wife. She was unharmed.

“This particular investi-gation and arrest highlights the collaboration between the Pasadena Police Department, Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and the U.S. Marshalls Office. More-

over, the investigation under-scores the Pasadena Police Department’s willingness to pursue predators beyond lo-cal boundaries. Although the murder occurred over a de-cade ago detectives

frequently communicat-ed with the Mexican authori-ties and federal law enforce-ment counterparts, which ultimately led the Romero’s arrest.” I am extremely proud of the department’s efforts to ensure Romero was appre-hended and I hope his arrest and extradition helps bring closure to the family.”

1995 Murder Suspect Extradited From Mexico

On Monday (03/05/2012) at approxi-mately 9:30 in the eve-ning officers from the El Monte Police Department received a call regarding "vehicle tampering, U-Haul truck being unload-ed". When an El Monte Police Department airship arrived at the scene they were seen by the suspects who immediately fled in a duelly truck. An El Monte patrol unit saw the sus-

pect's truck. When the patrol offi-

cer attempted to stop the suspect's vehicle the

driver did not yield and a short pursuit ensued. The pursuit ended when the suspect drove onto Freer Street, a cul de sac. At that time the passenger suspect got out of the truck and was taken into custo-dy by officers. The driver made a turn and drove at a high rate of speed toward

the officer who had initiat-ed the pursuit.

Fearing for his safety, the officer fired several rounds from his duty weap-on at the vehicle charging him. Two additional offi-cers, fearing for the safety of the first officer, fired sev-eral rounds from their duty weapons at the suspect.

The suspect, who had been hit by the gunfire drove into a residence on the southeast corner of Ar-

den Drive and Freer Street, Temple City. The wound-ed suspect was transported to Los Angeles County, University of Southern California, Medical Cen-ter, Los Angeles, where he was listed in critical con-dition. No one inside the residence was injured. No officers were injured.

There is no more in-formation available at this time.

Southern California Gas Co.(SoCalGas) is alert-ing customers to be aware of persons who reportedly have recently posed as SoCalGas employees. Ac-cording to a news account, the imposters distract an unsuspecting customer by performing “gas leak inspections” while an ac-complice burglarizes the customer’s home.

SoCalGas wants to as-sure all customers that all SoCalGas employees carry proper identification when called out to any job. Cus-tomers should verify the employee’s proper uni-form and identification be-fore letting anyone in the home or on their property.

Customer safety is a top priority for SoCalGas and employees will always be happy to wait while the customer confirms their

identity. Here are some tips to

help customers identify So-CalGas employees:

Be vigilant and ques-tion anyone who presents themselves as a representa-tive of the utility

SoCalGas workers who perform in-home ap-pliance services, work on gas meters or work on gas pipelines wear uniforms. However, some other em-ployees do not. Always ask for identification before allowing anyone inside the home or on the property

The majority of au-thorized SoCalGas em-ployees will be in uniform with company logo and carry an official employee badge. Most field employ-ees also drive a company vehicle

Most of the time a SoCalGas employee visits

a home or business in re-sponse to a service request. If no one scheduled an ap-pointment, call SoCalGas before allowing anyone in-side the home or property

Never leave the house unlocked and unattended. SoCalGas does not ask customers to leave their homes unattended

To verify the authen-ticity of anyone claiming to be a representative of So-CalGas, customers are en-couraged to ask for proper identification or call the utility at 1-800-427-2200 (or 1-800-342-4545 in Span-ish). SoCalGas customer service representatives are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week

Venturing with Crew 561. The post's very own Venture Crew 561 par-ticipated in the 2nd annual ceremony at the Memo-rial Park in Sierra Madre for the Unknown Scout. This memorial celebrates the founding of the Boy Scouts of America initiated by an American business man, Mr. William D. Boyce in 1910. While in London, England during a heavy fog Mr. Boyce became disorien-tated and was assisted by an unknown Scout in a chance encounter. Mr. Boyce was so impressed by the unself-ish actions and attitude of this young boy that when he returned to America he founded the Boy Scouts of America based upon the English version.

The monument in Si-erra Madre's Memorial Park was dedicated by veterans following WW II to com-memorate this London Boy Scouts who served as the inspiration for the founding the Boy Scouts of America.

This years celebration was attended by Past Depart-ment Auxiliary President Norma DuVall, your post Commander Peter Doug-las, Post Adjutant Robert (Eagle) Linker & 1st Vice Ed Barlow. Bugling was provid-ed by Mr. John Holzinger as assistant Crew leader and the three scouts attending were John, Paul and Pe-ter Sedaros of the Post 280 sponsored Venture Crew. Several bugle calls were played adding significantly to the festivities. Our heart-felt appreciation goes out for the Crews' participation in not only this event but for all their efforts in support-ing the post and veterans throughout the year.

hope all are well. I attend-ed the Tuskeegee Airmen dedication in Pasadena. The Post office on Colorado was named after Mr. Goodall which passed in 2010. Then I also went to Long Beach there dedicated 7 Build-ings one of them is a Blind Center very nice. While I was there I connected with 7 gold Star Mothers. They invited us to be of a part of their event in September. I will post the flyer when

we get a little closer to that date. On Monday the 20th we having our Department President visiting Post 280 and have Dinner with all of the elegant District 18. All are welcome. We will have a good time. Please come out and join us. I think that’s all for this time. Stay healthy and happy may God bless you and God bless Amer-ica. Your Unit President. Anita Martin

mem-bership – so, if you haven’t paid your 2012 dues please send right away. Your renewal helps your unit participate in the many programs of the Auxiliary. There are so many ways you help; just renewing your membership is a great way. We have a competition with the 18th District Legion on member-ship and although we were able to pull it off for the 1/2 way mark we sure need to keep going.

You can mail your check payable to: ALA, Unit 280 to 179 N. Vinedo, Pasadena 91107. Dues are $20. March is Community

Service Month. Offering a Day of Service to a veteran/service member/family who needs help taking care of the home:

Locate a veteran, ser-vice member, or a veteran/military family in need of help taking care of his/her home. A veteran can be located through word of mouth from Post members or by contacting the dis-trict veteran service officer and offering your help to a needy veteran. The service officer can offer your con-tact information to a needy veteran.

After a veteran has been lo-

cated, con-tact the

veter-a n t o

l e a r n of his

needs.C o n t a c t

The American Legion fam-ily and/or community mem-bers who may be willing to donate time and talent to help with the veteran's needs. Match the needs of the veteran with the abili-ties of your fellow American Legion family members. For instance, can American Le-gion family members rake leaves, wash windows, paint, plant flowers? Can Ameri-can Legion family members or a community member help with electrical work, plumbing, home repairs, building ramps, and pro-vide child care for the day?

Arrange a date/time for the day of service.

If work at the home will be taking place throughout the day, arrange to provide lunch to the workers and the veteran/service mem-ber/family. This meal can be as simple as a sandwich and salad lunch or take-out pizza.

On the day of the event, post signs and flags outside the work home if the veteran/service member /family is not opposed to the publicity.

After the work day, thank community members, American Legion Family members who helped make the day of service a success.

Do you change your car’s motor oil? Did you know that used motor oil and oil filters are recyclable? Used oil can be re-refined or processed into new motor oil. Currently only 46% of used motor oil is being recycled, which means 20 million gallons may be illegally entering California’s waterways via storm-water systems, posing a great risk to the environment. One gallon of used oil can contaminate a million gallons of drinking water; polluting our waterways and threaten fish and aquatic life. Prevent pollution; recycle used motor oil and filters!

Centennial of the Maryknoll Sisters to be Held March 25

To mark the Centenni-al of the Maryknoll Sisters, a Roman Catholic Reli-gious Missionary Congrega-tion, a Prayer Service will be held on March 25, 2012 at Immaculate Conception Church, 740 Shamrock Ave., Monrovia, California.

The Maryknoll Sisters were founded in 1912 by Mollie Rogers, a Smith Col-lege graduate. Since their

founding, hundreds of sis-ters have served in Asia, Africa, Central and South America and the Islands of the Pacific.

The sisters have also responded to the needs of immigrants in the United States. One of their earli-est works was an orphan-age and a school for the Japanese children in Los Angeles (1921) and a tuber-

culosis hospital in Monrovia (1930).

Today, the former hos-pital has been converted into a retirement facility for returning missioners. They continue to do volunteer work throughout Los Ange-les County.

More information is available on the Maryknoll website: www.maryknollsis-ters.org.

The excitement built at Camino Grove Elemen-tary School as Saturday, March 3rd marked the first time the City of Arcadia Girls Softball Association had their own Softball Sea-son Opening Ceremony. Mayor, Gary kovacic, threw out the ceremo-nial first pitch to Arcadia High School Varsity Soft-ball Coach Megan Leahy. They were present along with over 150 softball play-ers and their families to celebrate. Dawning brand new uniforms and in honor of this momentous occa-sion the festivities started off by the presentation of the Colors by Boy Scout Troop 161 Honor Guard out of Temple City, CA, followed by the National Anthem performed by 15

year old Alana De Blase an Arcadian Girl Scout Gold Award recipient. It was all topped off with a 1940 Navy Stearman Bi-plane Flyover together with smoke signals and all flown by pilot/owner and Arcadia resident Gabe Lo-pez . The beautiful vintage aircraft has been featured in the T.V. show JAG and has performed flyovers for the Rose Parade. As a highlight, the league rec-ognized the reigning 14U Western National Cham-pions from Arcadia. This coveted award was won by the girls and the prestigious trophies were awarded to the team after winning the tournament this past Au-gust. At the Western Na-tional Championship, Ar-cadia competed among 44

teams throughout Califor-nia, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Utah. The 14U girls won the en-tire tournament. The girls had 8 straight games and no losses. In eight games, Arcadia All-Stars scored 76 runs and allowed only 5 runs. They beat teams from Spokane, La Verne, Aliso Viejo, Rancho Bernardo, Garden Grove, Utah and Idaho. The Arcadia 14U All-Stars were saluted as the Western National 14U Fast Pitch Champion! Af-ter all of the announce-ments and speeches were made, all teams from 6U to 14U had their moment to shine. The teams had their traditional “run around the bases” and all girls from ages 5 to 15 had their time in the limelight. We were also proud to announce that later this Spring the Arcadia Fire Department together with the Arcadia Police Department will play in an exhibition game to help raise funds for the league. The family festival and match-up between Ar-cadia’s Finest Heroes will be played on May 12th, 2012 at Camino Grove Ele-mentary School. We invite anyone interested in hav-ing a great time to come and enjoy themselves.

The historic landmark Pinney House, built in 1887, will be open for self-guided tours for the first time ever, during the March 25 Wistaria Festival in Sierra Madre, Cali-fornia.

The Pinney House, de-signed by Victorian architects

Samuel & Joseph Cather Newsom, is celebrating 125 years, and has recently under-gone a major renovation to a lovely estate house. Tours will be offered to visitors on the Wistaria Festival shuttle, as the bus stops in front of the Pinney House at 225 No. Lima St. Visitors must have a shuttle ticket to enter. Noted California artists, William

Wray and Lynne Fearman, local to Sierra Madre, will be exhibiting their work in the House. The Pinney House was built by civil war surgeon and farmer Dr. Elbert Pinney during the land boom in Los Angeles. It was one of a string of railroad hotels that served

as lodging for train passen-gers who disembarked at the Baldwin depot on their trav-els from the midwest and east coast. It is one of the last re-maining railroad hotels of the Foothills that are still standing.

The first public Wistaria Festival occurred in 1918. Several blocks south of the vine, the village of Sierra Madre celebrates with arts

and craft fair, live musical entertainment, a kids’ zone, dining al fresco at local res-taurants as well as food ven-dors in the Memorial Park. The Sierra Madre Post Of-fice is offering a special postal cancellation to celebrate the Festival, with a temporary

postal station open March 25 11 A.M. to 3 P.M. in kerst-ing Court of Sierra Madre’s downtown. More information on The Pinney House can be found at www.pinneyhouse.com. More information on Wistaria Festival and to order Shuttle Tickets, visit www.wis-tariafestival.com and www.wistariatickets.com.

The departments of Human Services and Rec-reation and Housing have launched a community-wide needs-assessment sur-vey, making it available at a variety of locations around the city and online. The two city departments are working together to make certain their services are aligned with critical needs of residents, and that lim-ited community resources are used to their best ef-fect. The effort is strongly supported by partnering community organizations.

“The survey is an op-portunity for parents to make their families’ voices heard about Pasadena’s parks, playgrounds, teen center, sports fields and housing needs,” explained Jaylene Moseley, President of the Flintridge Center.

“Parents’ opinions and feedback will be particu-larly important for the city in planning for the future.”

Surveys in both Eng-lish and Spanish are avail-able at Villa-Parke Com-munity Center, the Teen Education Center at La Pintoresca Park, Jackie Robinson Community Center, Robinson Park Recreation Center, Victory Park Recreation Center, Pasadena Senior Center, the Department of Human Services and Recreation at City Hall, the Department of Housing at 649 North Fair Oaks, Suite 202, and all Pasadena libraries dur-ing their regular hours of operation.

To emphasize the im-portance of the outreach, Vice Mayor Margaret McAustin and City Manag-

er Michael Beck will be on hand to conduct the survey personally on Saturday, March 10, from 11 to 11:30 a.m. at Victory Park Cen-ter, 2575 Paloma Street.

The survey is also available online at the bot-tom of the city’s homep-age at www.cityofpasade-na.net.

Completing the survey only takes a few minutes, and everyone who fills one out will be entered to win a $50 gift certificate for recre-ation classes and activities.

The survey is open to all Pasadena residents 18 and older. It concludes March 23 at 5:00 p.m.

For more information on the survey or help filling it out, contact Lisa Fowler at [email protected] or (626) 744-4732.

Shave a Head for Childhood Cancer Research at Matt Denny’s

Ale House on March 15

Pasadena Reaches Out With Community Needs-Assessment Survey

St Baldrick’s Day is Thursday March 15. It sim-ply is one of the most fun charities for which Matt Denny’s has been a proud sponsor for 11 years rais-ing nearly $10,000 last year alone. The party and head shaving fun starts at 6. This is the party to see your favorite firfighters, police officers and general public getting every hair on their head shaved off in solidarity withy the chil-dren afflicted with childhood cancer.

DelSol Salon, as usual, will be on hand with their creative cutters to make the hair removal as painless as possible and fun to boot!

The St. Baldrick’s Foun-dation is the largest volunteer-driven charity dedicated to raising money for life-saving childhood cancer research,

and this year introduces its exclusive Marvel-designed “Super Heroes Save Lives” t-shirt to help St. Baldrick’s raise awareness and funds to Conquer Kids’ Cancer! The t-shirt design features five of Marvel’s legendary Super Hero characters: Iron Man, Spider-Man, Captain Amer-ica, the Hulk and Thor.

The “Super Heroes Save Lives” t-shirts are avail-able for purchase at StBal-dricks.org/Marvel for $19.99 plus shipping and handling. The unique t-shirt design was created by Marvel on behalf of the St. Baldrick’s Foun-dation and the proceeds of each t-shirt will go directly to the Foundation to help fund childhood cancer research.

In 2011, St. Baldrick’s awarded more than $21 million in childhood cancer

research grants which were made possible by the incred-ible support at the Founda-tion’s signature head-shav-ing events.

The St. Baldrick’s Foun-dation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives. The Foundation funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government. St. Baldrick’s funds are granted to some of the most brilliant childhood cancer re-search experts in the world and to younger professionals who will be the experts of tomorrow. Funds awarded also enable hundreds of lo-cal institutions to participate in national pediatric cancer clinical trials, a child’s best hope for a cure. Since the Foundation’s first grants as an independent charity in 2005, St. Baldrick’s has fund-ed more than $78 million in childhood cancer research. For more information about the St. Baldrick’s Founda-tion please call 1.888.899.BALD or visit StBaldricks.org.

Sierra Madre Chamber to Sponsor Council Candidate Election Events

Jerry and Nan CarltonOlder Sierra Madre Americans of the Year

On Wednesday, March 14th from 6:30 to 8:30pm, the Council is sponsoring a Candidate forum, which will be moderated by the League of Women Voters, Pasadena Area. The forum will be held in City Council chambers in City Hall, 232 W. Sierra Madre Blvd. Residents will have the opportunity to put their questions in writing for the candidates. The League will have “question sorters” on hand to provide your questions to the moderator. According to the rules of

the forum provided by the LWVPA, “the sorters will compile similar questions to-gether, for the moderator. It is each Moderator’s option to ask, or not ask, the Sorters themselves to condense/re-phrase recurring questions on a topic. The Sorters become screeners only for questions inappropriate to a forum. They will intervene for reck-less inflammatory questions or for very personal ones. The moderator attempts to present questions covering the widest range of issues.”

There is no charge to attend, and the public is invited.

On Thursday, March 15th, the Chamber presents its March Mixer, annually hosted by the Sierra Madre Woman’s Club at their historic clubhouse, “Essick House,” located at 550 W. Si-erra Madre Blvd. The mixer will be held from 5 to 7pm, and attendees will have the opportunity to meet and greet the Council candidates. Each candidate will be introduced an have an opportunity to speak for 2 – 3 minutes, but

the rest of the time they will be mingling with the attendees, who will also have the oppor-tunity to sample the culinary skills of the Woman’s Club. As this is a fundraiser for the Chamber, admission will be charged, at the reduced rate of $5/person.

The corner pharmacy once ubiquitous came to symbolize small-town America. -Photo by Terry Miller

Colonial Pharmacy Falls Victim to Recession

to shop locally anymore. I always try to suppoprt my local, independent suppli-ers.” Burstyn said.

Burstyn has also been an avid proponent of youth sports and has nurtured and encouraged numerous Ar-cadia athletes over the years.

We asked Burstyn if the $4 presciption “incentive” with the big box stores was a key factor. “Sure,” he said “a little guy like me cannot compete with that….also I don’t sell milk or other things like that so I’d be losing even more money. I simply couldn’t afford to do that.”

But the decision to close was more of a conglomera-tion of paperwork and late insurance reinbursements. “My vendors want their money in 15 days; with the Insurances companies we’re lucky if we get paid in 30 days.”

The pain Burstyn feels is epidemic. Small businesses are losing ground rapidly and brick and mortar shops are becoming a thing of the past. In many instances swal-lowed up by mega markets with huge buying power. The small independent re-tailer simply cannot compete with big box stores such a WalMart.

Trying desperatly to hold back the tears, Mark Burstyn explained how things have changed on his watch, particularly through 07-09. “My kid’s have only known me at this pharmacy” he said. Matt 22, and Steve 17 and wife Mary make up the Burstyn family and has been the sole breadwinner in the family ever since gradua-tion from Pharmacy College in 1984.

“I’ve seen patients get better and seen some die over the years. This is my ex-tended family. You really get

to know your community in this business.”

Working about 60 hours a week Burstyn was philo-sophical about the change he’s about to undetake.

“ 40 hours will seem like part time to me after all these years of running Colonial Pharmcay” he quipped.

Mark Burstyn and some of his staff will be moving to Von’s Pavillions Pharmacy on March 21. The actual last day for Colonial will be March 20.

In the 1950’s many small towns had 100% em-ployment. There were farms, there were schools, there was industry, and there were shops up and down Main Street selling all sorts of goods.

Everything in those towns, from the gas sold at the station, to the used car on the lot, to the oven in the bakery and the products coming out of the oven, to the beer sold at the bar and the juke box in the corner, and he boots on the feet of the patrons, to the pharmacy next door and the lipstick on the clerk, were made in America by Ameri-cans, and bought in America by Americans. Like a closed ecosystem, America was, at this point, self sustaining.

In the 2000’s almost ev-erything in that small town, from the gas station, (oil from Saudi) to the car, (made in Japan) to the oven (made in korea) to flour (milled in Jamaica) to the beer (from Germany) to the Juke Box (made in China) to the boots (made in Malaysia), to the pharmacy (drugs made in various other countries with ingredients from other coun-tries) to the lipstick (made in China) are made elsewhere and sold all over the world.

Ironically just as the ris-ing collective age of Ameri-cans is leading to a need for

more health care workers, the same thing is also lead-ing to a need for more pre-scription drugs and those who know how to prescribe them. In addition, accord-ing to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a growing number of pharmacies are starting to offer on-site diagnoses and patient care, stretching the amount of skilled and well-trained pharmacists needed. The demand for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians is expected to rise by over 30% in the next decade. However, that need doesn’t necessarilly trans-late into corner pharmacies like Colonial being success-ful or even being able to stay afloat.

The costs incurred are too prohibitive for small pharmaciies to compete.

Colonial Pharmacy’s policy has always been “old-fashioned” personal service with a commitment to keeping current with the most recent medical devel-opments.”

Despite Mark Burstyn’s best efforts, Colonial had little choice but to regroup. Colonial had to move on and will now join Pavillion’s team in Arcadia.

All prescriptions will automatically be trans-ferred to their system so the transormation should be painless for most patients. Also Burstyn will continue to compound at Pavillions.

When visiting Burstyn’s Colonial pharmacy one can see the history, it’s full of collectibles that run the gamut from medicine bot-tles to scales to 'show globes' - large glass balls used as window displays. Literally, Colonial Pharmacy was the corner pharmacy once ubiq-uitous and came to symbol-ize small-town America.

Ballots are being mailed on Monday, March 12 to registered voters in Arcadia for the next mu-nicipal election. Based on the overwhelming use of absentee ballots over vot-ing at the polls recently, the Arcadia City Council decided to hold its election completely by mail.

This election will in-clude two City Council seats, one ballot measure and the position of City Clerk. However, as only Glen Glasco has filed for City Clerk.

There are five candi-dates for the two Council seats. Of the two seats, one is an open position as Roger Chandler has been termed out. Gary kovacic is running for reelection.

Also running are Mary Dougherty, Henry Nunez, Sho Tay, and John Wuo. Wuo has served previ-ously on the council. Both Nunez and Tay have run before. Dougherty has previously served on the local Board of Education.

The voter packets which go out next week will include not only the sample ballot information including candidate state-ments, but also the actual election ballots. Do not throw out your ballot. This is the real ballot which reg-istered voters must return in order to vote.

Ballots must be re-ceived by election day, April 10. The ballots can be returned by mail or can be brought directly to the

City Clerk’s office at Ar-cadia’s City Hall. In ad-dition to regular business hours until the day of the election, on April 10 itself, the City Clerk’s office will be open to receive ballots until 8 p.m.

Ballots mailed, but not received by April 10 will not be counted according to Deputy City Clerk, Lisa Mussenden. She suggests bringing the ballots to City Hall rather than relying on the postal service if voters wait to the last minute.

Complete statements and photographs of the candidates will be pub-lished in next week’s edi-tion of this newspaper to assist voters in making in-formed decisions.
