Head Coach Dave GanttHead Coach Dave Gantt Dave Gantt, former head women’s vol-leyball coach at both Montana State Univer-sity and Oregon State University, was named the fi fth head coach at Gonzaga University Jan. 20, 2009. “Everyone we spoke with had nothing but praise for Dave,” Gonzaga athletic direc-tor Mike Roth said. “The more the process evolved, the more people we talked to, the more it became clear we were getting a highly-respected coach in Dave Gantt. Obvi-ously, he has a Division I background and knows the area well.” Gantt, who most recently was an adjunct professor at Montana State and a collegiate volleyball offi cial, was the head volleyball coach at Montana State for nine seasons from 1994-02, compiling a 159-96 record for a .624 winning percentage. He posted a 72-64 Big Sky Conference record for a .529 winning percentage. The Bobcats were also ranked in the Top 25 in attendance from 1997-2002, averag-ing more than 1,000 per match annually, with a crowd of approximately 6,500 in attendance for his last match versus the University of Montana. In addition, Gantt’s squads were recognized annually for the AVCA team academic award. The all-time leader in wins at Montana State, Gantt coached 15 Big Sky All-Conference honorees, as well as three Big Sky Freshman of the Year, two Newcomers of the Year and a Defensive Player of the Year. Gantt guided the Bobcats to eight consecutive winning seasons, to their inaugural and seven consecutive Big Sky Conference tournament appearances, and averaged 20 wins a season from 1997-2002, with a school best record of 21-6 in 1998. The MSU program also broke into the Pacifi c Region rankings (WCC, Pac-10, Big Sky) for the fi rst time ever in 2000 and repeated that ranking again in 2002. “First of all, I am so excited and humbled,” stated Gantt. “It is a special situation where my experience and organization was able to override my absence from the game. The administrative staff sees clearly

that my plan is to get Gonzaga volleyball where we need it to be. I don’t think there would be a better fi t for me personally. I am extremely humbled and very excited that Gonzaga has gracefully allowed me this opportunity.” Gantt was the Senior Associate Athletic Director for external operations at Montana State from 2003-05 and most recently was the Director of Athletics, Intramurals and Recreation for MSU-Northern from 2005-07. Having previous head coaching experience at Oregon State University and Northern Montana College, Gantt has accumulated a 216-160 (57.4 percent) career record during his 14-year head coaching career. Gantt previously served as head coach at Oregon State from 1991-93. During his two-year stint with the Beavers, Gantt led OSU to a 29-36 mark in the Pacifi -10 Conference, which is considered one of the best volleyball leagues in the country. Prior to being named head coach at Oregon State, Gantt was an assistant with the USA Men’s National Team from 1990-91. Gantt’s duties were to develop new and unknown players and join them with more experienced

athletes for major international competitions such as the World Champi-onships and the Goodwill Games. Gantt’s fi rst collegiate head coaching job was at Northern Montana from 1988-89. He was awarded the 1989 Frontier Conference Coach of the Year honor after guiding the Sky Lights to a 24-14 record and the league title. The California native began his collegiate career as an assistant coach at Montana State under the tutelage of Bill Neville, the former USA Men’s National Team head coach. Gantt entered the volleyball coaching ranks at Belgrade (Mont.) High School from 1982-88. He guided the Panthers to an overall mark of 125-36 during his tenure. A 1978 graduate of the University of Great Falls, Gantt received his master’s degree in physical education from Montana State in 1983. He is a member of the America Volleyball Coaches Association and USA Volleyball (USAV). Gantt and his wife, Mary, have two children, Ryan and Alissa.

Assistant Coach Abby BennettAssistant Coach Abby BennettFourth Year at Gonzaga; Gonzaga University, 2003

Abby Bennett enters her fourth season as an assistant coach with Gonzaga University in 2009. During this past spring, Bennett was promoted to fi rst assistant after serving the program for three seasons. Prior to her time with the Bulldogs she was an assistant coach for one season at Central Washington Univer-sity. Bennett, a four-year starter for the Bulldogs from 2000-03, ranks in the top 10 in the Zags career record book for block assists (4th, 341), block solos (5th, 87), total blocks (4th, 428), total kills (7th, 1,140) and attack at-tempts (9th, 2,917). She also holds the single-match record for total blocks in a game with 15 and assisted blocks with 13; both recorded against Portland in 2002. While an assistant with Central Wash-ington, Bennett helped guide the Wildcats to the 2005 Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship and to the second round of the NCAA Division II region-als. Central Washington closed out the season with a 23-5 overall record,

including a 16-2 fi nish in conference. A 2003 graduate of Gonzaga with a bachelor of sci-ence degree in sociology, Bennett has also been a coach for the Gonzaga volleyball summer camp for the past seven years and is a coach for the Spokane Storm. The former Abby Cullen was married to Steve Ben-nett, an assistant baseball coach at Gonzaga, on July 25, 2008. They are the proud parents of Cullen Bennett (2009). “As I spoke with people during the hiring process it became obvious to me that I kept describing Coach Bennett,” explained head coach Dave Gantt. “She is a Gonzaga alum and has very strong ties to the University. She has a very good sense of where the program has been and has quickly shifted her paradigm relative to where we think the program should be. As a former GU athlete, Abby has a very solid awareness of what should be happening in the classroom and on the court, and in my short time in the program I have developed a greater

sense of trust in her abilities. She is a Bulldog through and through and has provided wonderful stability and continuity during this transition.”

Assistant Coach Brynn MurphyAssistant Coach Brynn MurphyThird Year at Gonzaga; UCLA, 2005

Brynn Murphy begins her third season as a member of the Gonzaga University women’s volleyball staff and fi rst season as an assistant coach. Murphy spent the prior two seasons with the Bulldogs as a volunteer assistant coach. Murphy was a four-year starter at UCLA from 2001-04. She closed out her career ninth in the Bruins record book in block assists (225), 10th in total blocks (373) and 17th in total kills (1,242). Murphy was named to the Pacifi c-10 All-Freshman squad her fi rst season at UCLA and went on to earn All-Pacifi c-10 fi rst team accolades as a junior and honorable mention honors her senior season. Murphy helped UCLA to four straight NCAA Tournaments, including three NCAA Regional Finals. The Bruins had an 86-43 (66.7 percentage) overall record over Mur-phy’s four years and won 20-plus matches each season. “We are very fortunate that our program is in a position to attract an up and coming young coach of Brynn’s caliber,” stated head coach Dave Gantt. “Her volleyball background speaks for itself, as she has competed at the highest collegiate level available in the U.S. What spoke louder

to me than her credibility in the world of volleyball is her selfl ess everyday nature. As evidenced by her role as a volunteer assistant for the past two years, she is a very giving human being and an extremely positive role model for our student-athletes. I am excited to work with her.” After her four-year playing career, Murphy served as an undergraduate assistant coach for the Bruins during 2005. She has also coached multiple club teams, includ-ing being a head coach of South Bay Volleyball Club (Carson, Calif.) and is currently the assistant coach for the Splash Volleyball Club in Spokane. Murphy earned a bachelor’s of arts in history from UCLA in 2005 and is on pace to gain her master’s in sports and athletic administration from Gonzaga.

Assistant Coach Allen AllenAssistant Coach Allen AllenFirst Year at Gonzaga; University of Hawaii, 1996

Allen Allen begins his fi rst year as a volunteer assistant coach with the Gonzaga University volleyball squad. “One of my fi rst jobs with USA Volley-ball was to be aware of the available colle-giate talent and there was no question Allen possessed the talent for international level competition,” stated head coach Dave Gantt. “I had the pleasure of interacting with Al over the next few years as we worked to elevate the USA Men’s National Team program. Dur-ing that time I saw him grow into one of the best outside hitters on the international stage, and as we traveled the world together I got to know him on every level. Since that time, he has gone on to play professionally in Europe and was a mainstay on the Bud Light pro tour in the United States for many years. I am very comfortable saying that he is the type of person we want involved with our staff. As a competitor, as a coach, as a human being and as a friend, he is top notch. He will be a great ambassador for the Gonzaga volleyball program.” Allen was a four-year member of the University of Hawaii men’s volleyball program from 1986-89. While a player at Hawaii the Warriors compiled a 70-28 overall record and a 53-23 record in conference. Allen was named a fi rst team All-American in 1988 and 1989 and a second team All-American selection in 1987. He earned All-California Inter-

collegiate Volleyball Association (CIVA) honorable mention as a freshman, and All-Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (WIVA) fi rst-team as a sopho-more, junior and senior. He still holds the career records for solo blocks (112), is second in kill attempts (3,151) and digs (739) and third in kills (1,483). After his playing days at Hawaii, Allen began his four-year stint with the United States National Team. He went on to play professionally in the FIVB Beach Volleyball Series, the European Professional Volley-ball League and the Bud-Light Professional Volleyball League. Allen offi cially retired from professional com-petition in 1998. Allen’s coaching career started in 1993 when he was an assistant coach with his alma mater for one year. Two years later in 1995, Allen became the head coach for the Samoan men’s and women’s National Team. He went on to become the head women’s volleyball coach at Alliant University in San Diego, Calif., before founding the Al-

len Allen Club Volleyball in 2004. Allen helmed Alliant for three seasons (2003-2005) and continued to run the Allen Allen Club Volleyball program until August; when he offi cially joined the Gonzaga staff. Allen earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Hawaii in 1996 and his special education teaching credential from California State San Marcos in 2001. Allen is married to Melissa, who is the girl’s varsity basketball head coach at Mount Spokane High School.

2009 - A New Chapter2009 - A New Chapter The book on Gonzaga University women’s volleyball is vast; chap-ters include everything from West Coast Conference Players of the Year Lisa Petticord and Kelley Cunningham, to the 1990 Gonzaga NCAA Tournament Team, to the toughness of playing in the West Coast Confer-ence. The book will now hold a new chapter titled ‘Shift in Culture: The Dave Gantt Era’. Dave Gantt, former head coach at both Oregon State University and Montana State University, was handed the reins to the Bulldog squad in January of 2009; becoming just the fi fth head coach in program history. Gantt takes over a program that hasn’t fi nished higher than seventh in the West Coast Conference in seven years and a program that has only had double-digit wins in three of those seasons. “There are a number of clichés’ that best describe our goals this season,” said Gantt four days into preseason. “They are quite simple in principle, yet have a very signifi cant impact on our development as a team. Staying healthy would be number one, as we have little depth in certain positions. Number two would be to learn how to compete at a level that allows us a chance to win every set. This will help begin to shift the culture of the program and develop a paradigm that will allow us to see ourselves as a successful and worthy volleyball program.” Gantt has three key seniors that will play a vital role in the newest chapter of Gonzaga Volleyball: fi fth year senior outside hitter Michelle Boevers, right side hitter Layne Brosky and a jack of all trades Emily Johnson. Boevers closed out her junior campaign second on the team in both kills (319) and kills per set (2.73) and needs just 78 more to join the exclusive 1,000-Kill Club. “As a fi fth year senior, and one of the better athletes in the WCC, it’s entirely up to Michelle how she approaches her fi nal season,” explained Gantt. “She has done some nice work over the summer and enters fall camp penciled in as a starter at outside hitter. Within our culture and system, Number 7 will be very impactive as she possesses the ‘gifts’ to be a very high lever player. With the mindset and responses she exhibited late last spring, she could have a ‘no regrets’ season and be a major difference maker during the 2009 campaign.” Brosky, the Zags leader both on and off the court, increased her hitting percentage tremendously last season, closing out the year hitting .265 with 252 kills. Brosky is the lone Zag returner to garner a WCC accolade last season, being named honorable mention All-Conference. “The ‘professor’ has been a constant fi xture on the right side for the last three seasons,” stated Gantt. “Possessing a very steady and enjoyable personality, Layne will be a major component of the glue that will hold this team together. With a tireless work ethic, she’s averaged a little over 2.00 kills per set during her career and we need to keep her as involved with the offense as possible so she is an even bigger threat in her fi nal season. The coaching staff knows she’s ready to have a great senior season.” The fi nal member of GU’s senior triumvirate, Johnson is explosive both offensively and defensively. She fi nished her junior campaign with 259 digs, second on the squad, along with 212 kills and 18 service aces. “Emily will be competing for time as an outside hitter, right side hitter, and libero this season,” said Gantt. “Her dynamic athleticism allows her the potential to play a key role and be an integral part of our system this fall. Clearing her mind so she can ‘be in the now’ will allow her to be quick, jump high, hit hard, and score points. That was our mantra and challenge during the spring and it will continue to be our main focus for her as we begin fall camp. Staying in ‘real time’ and directing her attention to things she controls will allow Emily to have a breakout fi nal season.”

Other returnees looking to make an impact in 2009 are middle blocker Caitlin Cozad, defensive specialists/liberos Allyson Powell and Laura Day, and setters Denise Van de Mortel and Kelsey Bashaw. Cozad, the lone returning middle for the Bulldogs, fi nished her junior season second on the team in blocks with 89 total and added 164 kills and 37 digs. “’The ‘silent one’ will need to use her speed, agility and heart. Utilizing those tools will allow her to be successful at the necessary level of play,” said Gantt. “Caitlin has the potential to be very effective night after night and will be called on to ‘up her game’ to become ‘automatic’ and therefore a consistent threat when she’s on the court. We’re looking forward to witnessing her growth.” Powell and Day will shore up the openings in the Zags defense; both vying for either the libero spot or defensive specialists spot on the court. Powell played all 117 sets as a sophomore, fi nishing the season with 1.79 digs per set, while Day saw action in 114 sets as a freshman, tallying 1.47 digs per set, along with serving up 16 aces. “A ‘hard rock miner’ comes to mind when describing Ally’s in-volvement,” said Gantt. “She has the right mindset to handle a defensive role and the personality to smile throughout the process of elevating her game. Ally’s size and presence is determined by the cumulative effect of all she contributes and is not measured in feet and inches. “Laura is also in a defensive role and will be hoping to expand her skill set. Consistent passing and defensive play certainly describe Laura and will bode well for her as she strives to increase strength and quick-ness to become a more dynamic player.” Bashaw and Van de Mortel will battle for the starting setter posi-tion, as Bashaw ended the spring season as the number one setter after Van de Mortel missed most of the spring practices. “We need Kelsey to continue to perform well to lead our team through the fall,” explained Gantt. “She can be a perfectionist and a little tough on herself at times, but will have every opportunity to continue to gain momentum and improve as we move through the different phases of the season. “After an interesting freshman year, Denise has gained the physical and psychological maturity to be more confi dent in her role running our team. From the fi rst day of fall camp she will be competing for playing time and that is always healthy as we strive to raise the level of play in our program.” The Zags welcome four newcomers to the squad in 2009; three middle hitters in Jessie Genger, Meredith Crenshaw and Nikki Lowell, and one outside hitter in Terran Poindexter. “We will have our challenges with three young middles, but we expect someone will raise their level of play and be a factor this season,” explained Gantt. “Also, Terran could push for some quality time this year as a freshman.” Helping coach Gantt in changing the culture of Gonzaga Volleyball this season are three talented assistant coaches. Abby Bennett enters her fourth year as an assistant, while Brynn Murphy begins her third year and Allen Allen is in his fi rst with the Zags. “It is not often that such a solid group of people would avail them-selves to the task we’re faced with, but I can attest to our new staff being one on the fi nest,” stated Gantt. “Having solid core principles as people and possessing a very clear vision of how good volleyball programs operate, our International, All-American, Pacifi c-10, and WCC accolades and experiences will provide solid leadership for our student athletes.”

WCC Players of the YearWCC Players of the Year13 LISA PETTICORD

1990 WCC Player of the Year Lisa Petticord was one of the fi rst players to take Gonzaga University wom-

en’s volleyball to the next level as a NCAA Division I program. A walk-on as a freshman in 1987 who earned All-West Coast Conference fi rst team recognition, Petticord capped her outstanding career by being named the WCC Player of the Year in 1990. A three-time All-WCC fi rst-team pick - she earned second team recognition as a sophomore - Petticord led the Bulldogs to their only NCAA Tournament appearance to date with a record setting senior season. She eclipsed career WCC and school records for kills (1,692), blocks (546) and block assists (408), and set single-season standards for kills (638) and hitting percentage (.364). In addition to her records, she led the WCC in kill average (5.1), and was third in both block average (1.1) and ace average (0.4). Petticord’s honors extended beyond the WCC as she was named to the ASICS/Volleyball Monthly NCAA Division I honorable mention All-America squad and to the fi rst-team All-West region team as selected by the American Vol-leyball Coaches Association. At the 1990 Sports Festival in Los Angeles, she played for the bronze-medal winning East squad. She was also a GTE/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) District VIII fi rst team all-academic selection with a 3.43 GPA in mathematics. The Gonzaga University Bulldog Club also named her the Senior Female Student-Athlete of the Year. Her highest accolade, however, was being named the 1990 Hanes Her Way NCAA Woman of the Year for the State of Washington. She attended the Hanes Her Way Woman of the Year Awards Dinner in Chicago, and a $5,000 scholar-ship in her name was presented to Gonzaga’s general scholarship fund.

14 KELLEY CUNNINGHAM1992 WCC Player of the Year

One of the most dominant players in the history of the West Coast Conference, Kelley Cunningham rewrote the WCC and Gonzaga record books from 1989-1992. Cunningham, who won two Sports Festival gold medals, one in 1990 in Los Angeles and the other in 1992 in San Antonio, Texas, shattered former team-mate Lisa Petticord’s records for career (1,964) and single-season (651) kills on her way to earning WCC Player of the Year honors in 1992. She is also tied for fourth on the WCC single-season career kills chart with 577 set as a junior, and she holds the fi rst, third, and sixth (450 in 1990) and 10th (286 in 1989) spots on the Gonzaga single-season kills list. She’s second behind Petticord in WCC career blocks (502) and block assists (385). An honorable mention All-WCC pick as a freshman and second-team selec-tion as a sophomore, the homegrown product of Spokane’s Lewis and Clark High began her dominance as a junior in 1991. That season she led the nation in kills-per-game average at 5.888 and paced the WCC with her .301 hitting percentage, and her 14 total blocks and nine block assists at Eastern Washing-ton University set school records. She earned All-West Region second team status as selected by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Her sensational senior campaign saw her gain All-West Region fi rst team rec-ognition and honorable mention All-America honors as selected by Volleyball Monthly Magazine. She produced 19 matches of 20 or more kills, including a personal-best and 1992 WCC season-best of 42 which also stands as a Gonzaga record for a fi ve-game match. When the West Coast Conference fi rst got its start back in 1952, the founders really had only one goal in mind...to create a con-venient way for fi ve Bay Area schools to play basketball. Now, 57 years later, a marvelously cohesive athletics league, which is com-petitive at the national level in 13 sports, is entering 30 seasons under its present eight-team mix. The current members of the WCC span the western coast of the United States from Canada to Mexico. Though the institutions range from the pine forests of eastern Washington state to the sun drenched beaches of southern California, the combined excellence in athletics and academics sets the conference apart on the national scene and draws the individual institutions together in a common mission. The WCC crowns champions in 13 sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, women’s rowing, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s volleyball. The league was chartered by fi ve Bay Area institutions (San Francisco, Saint Mary’s, Santa Clara, San Jose State and Pacifi c) as the California Basketball Association, playing its fi rst game on January 2, 1953. After two seasons of play under that name, the con-ference expanded to include Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine in 1955, and became the “West Coast Athletic Conference” in 1956. The name was shortened in 1989. The current alignment of Gonzaga, LMU, Pepperdine, Port-land, Saint Mary’s, San Diego, San Francisco and Santa Clara has remained unchanged since 1979, making the WCC the third most stable conference in the nation. Only the Ivy League and Pacifi c-10 Conference have been together longer. Women’s volleyball became an offi cially recognized West Coast Conference sport in the fall of 1985, and WCC teams have fl ourished over the past 24 years of competition. The conference has been well represented in NCAA action, with at least two teams going to the NCAA Tournament each of the last eight seasons. In 2003 the WCC had six of its eight members gain NCAA tournament berths to rank as the top conference for per-centage of members making the tournament fi eld at 75 percent. In 2005, Santa Clara became the fi rst WCC school to advance to the Final Four losing in the National Semifi nal to Nebraska.

Gonzaga UniversityUNIVERSITY ORIGIN

Gonzaga was founded in 1887 by Father Joseph Cataldo, S.J., as a frontier boarding school for boys. The school has established its own unique identity since starting as a single building along the banks of the Spokane Riv-er. Named for the Jesuit Saint Aloysius Gon-zaga, the patron of youth, the 122-year-old institution has grown and matured into one of the West’s premier regional universities. Gon-zaga’s educational philosophy is based on the 469-year-old Ignatian model that aims to edu-cate the whole person-mind, body and spirit - an integration of science and art, faith and reason, action and contemplation. The state Legislature accorded Gonza-ga status as a University in 1912, the same year the School of Law began. The 1920’s were highlighted by the establishment of the School of Business Administration (1921) and the School of Education (1928). The Graduate School was launched in 1931 and the School of Engineering was created in 1934 to meet the demand sparked by the new national interest in hydroelectric projects. Enrollment swelled in the late 1940’s due largely to the G.I. Bill and women were fi rst admitted in 1948. Situated on 94 acres of landscaped cam-pus located in a residential section of Spokane, the Gonzaga campus continues to grow and change with the times. Opening in the summer of 2000, Gonzaga’s School of Law Building becomes the newest addition to the growing urban campus. A new Rosauers School of Ed-ucation building was completed in the spring of 1994, and Jundt Art Center and Museum opened in the fall of 1995. Other campus ad-ditions in recent years are the Herak Center which houses the School of Engineering and the Jepson Center which has the School of Business Administration as its tenants. The former Crosby Library was transformed into a new Student Union Building.

Gonzaga UniversityWhat the Future Holds

In April 2002, Gonzaga launched a $119 million capital campaign entitled “Educating People the World Needs Most.” The campaign will provide new scholarships and professorships, and con-struction and renovation of buildings for athletics and recreation, the sciences, busi-ness, engineering, the performing arts and residence living.

The Start of Jesuit Education

Founded in 1540 by Basque nobleman Ignatius of Loyola, the Society of Jesus is an order of Catholic priests and brothers, who with their lay colleagues, carry on a 469-year tradition of eduction excellence. While recovering from a battle wound, Ignatius’ life was changed by reading the Bible and studying the lives of the saints. His religious experiences led him to re-nounce the life of courtier and soldier to serve God. That inspired him to write the Spiritual Exercises, a work that would be-come the basis of Jesuit spirituality and mission. After studying at the University of Paris for seven years, he founded a school based on his scholarship. At the time of Ignatius’ death in 1556, Jesuits ran 33 colleges and universities worldwide. Georgetown University, found-ed in 1789, became the fi rst American Je-suit university. There are now 112 Jesuit colleges and universities in the world, in-cluding 33 in the United States. Gonzaga University is named for Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, a 16th century priest. In his effort to comfort the ill in Rome dur-ing the plague, he caught the scourge and died a young man. He is named the Patron Saint of Youth.

Gonzaga Athletics Athletic tradition at Gonzaga University is almost as old as the University itself, ranging from the football hey days at the early part of the century to the Bulldogs foray into the NCAA Elite Eight. As the University has grown from a single building along the banks of the Spokane River in 1887 into a major urban campus, so too has the Gonzaga athletic program grown. Gon-zaga now competes in 16 varsity sports at the NCAA Division I level and is a proud member of the West Coast Conference. In the early part of the century, football was the game at Gonzaga as future NFL Hall-of-Famers Ray Flaherty and Tony Canadeo joined with many others to put Bulldog Athletics on the map. As Gonzaga slowly dropped football as an intercollegiate sport, hockey came to the forefront as Gonzaga won the Pacifi c Coast Intercollegiate Hockey Championship in 1939. During the 1940’s and 1950’s men’s basketball and boxing became the feature sports at Gonzaga as the Bulldog’s basket-ball team reached the 1948 NAIA National Tournament played in Kansas City. Two years later Gonzaga won its only NCAA National Championship to date as the Bulldog boxing team won the 1950 NCAA Championship. Men’s basketball remained in the spotlight through the late 1950’s as Gonzaga’s all-time leading rebounder Jerry Vermillion and all-time leading scorer Frank Burgess graced the hardwood for the Zags. Through the 1970’s and early 1980’s Gonzaga baseball came to dominate play in the Pacifi c Northwest. The Bulldogs won eight conference titles over a 10-year span from 1971-1981. That 10-year run witnessed seven post-season appearances for Gon-zaga, highlighted by a NCAA West Regional championship ap-pearance in 1978. Women’s athletics had some of its most successful years as the 1990’s started with both the volleyball and basketball teams making post-season appearances. Behind All-Americans Lisa Petticord and Kelley Cunningham, the volleyball Bulldogs made their only NCAA Tournament appearance in 1990. In 1994 the women’s basketball team grabbed the spotlight making it’s fi rst post-season tournament with a bid to the Women’s National In-vitational Tournament in Amarillo, Texas. The women’s team re-turned to post-season action in 2004 and 2005 with back-to-back WNIT bid. In 2007 Gonzaga women’s basketball won its inagural WCC Tournament Champiopnship and earned its fi rst berth into the NCAA Tournament. Women’s basketball continues to keep its name in the spotlight, prodcuing its most successful season to date as it made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2009. Women’s crew has also become a dominant sport with the team winning 12 West Coast Conference Rowing Championships and capturing the ECAC National Invitational championship in 2003.

A Formula Of SuccessA Formula Of Success Gonzaga has been vaulted on the national scene based on the success of its men’s basketball team in the NCAA Tournament. In 1999, the Bulldogs captured the hearts of the nation with their incredible run to the Elite Eight, following up that success with Sweet Sixteen appearances in 2000, 2001 and 2009. Men’s bas-ketball has continued to build on that national success making 11-straight NCAA Tournament appearances and reaching the top echelon of the national rankings. In 2002 Gonzaga fi nished the season ranked sixth in the Associated Press poll only to top that success two seasons later with a No. 3 national ranking and a No. 2 seed in the 2004 NCAA Tournament. National Player of the Year candidate Adam Morrison led the nation in scoring in 2006. He was the third pick in the 2006 NBA Draft, selected by the Charlotte Bobcats. Along with team success, the Bulldogs have also had numer-ous individual accolades during the past couple of years with bas-ketball stars Dan Dickau, Blake Stepp and Adam Morrison each earning All-American honors while being named to the Wooden All-American teams. On the baseball fi eld Nate Gold led the NCAA in home runs in 2002 while earning All-America honors and becoming a semifi nalist for the Dick Howser Trophy and Ro-tary Smith awards for collegiate baseball Player of the Year. In 2004 catcher Kiel Thibault continued that success as he was named a semifi nalist for the Johnny Bench Award for baseball’s top col-legiate catcher. In 2007, pitcher Clayton Mortenson was named Louisville Slugger Third Team All-America and was drafted 36th overall in the MLB draft. On the water women’s rower Maria Bokulich and Kelly Steinhaus made names for themselves with All-America accolades and invites to the U.S. Rowing National Team non-Olympic camp. In addition to standout athletic teams through the years and recent individual success, Gonzaga has also been home to many top notch individual athletes such as the NBA’s all-time assist and steals leader and 2009 NBA Hall of Fame inductee - John Stock-ton; U.S. Speed Skating Champion and 2006 Olympian - Kris-tine Holzer; U.S. National Soccer team member - Brian Ching; Florida Marlins World Series catcher - Mike Redmond; 2004 Na-tional League Rookie of the Year and 2005, 2006 and 2009 All-Star - Jason Bay; U.S. Olympic Rowing team member - Monica Tranel-Michini; former two-time U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Golf Champion - Connie Oldershaw Guthrie; and Stanley Cup winning goal-keeper and 1945 Calder Cup recipient for the To-ronto Maple Leafs - Frank McCool.

Josh Burrows had a vision and Gonza-ga University had a need. The two culmi-nated into what you see before you today, the Josh Burrows Performance Athletic Center. His vision was to provide Gonzaga University and its student-athletes the win-ning edge in sports science, emphasizing state-of-the-art sports training methods. That vision has now become a reality. A 1979 graduate of Gonzaga Universi-ty and longtime Spokane resident, Josh has always been interested in dynamic sports training. He has spent countless hours re-searching and identifying improved means of increasing athletic performance, some of it through his own athletic training. With the dedication of the Josh Bur-rows Performance Center, “JB”, as he is affectionately known by the student-ath-letes, will be remembered as the “father of fi tness” within the Bulldogs Athletics Family, as student-athletes for years to come will reap the rewards of his vision.

Gonzaga Academic Success Gonzaga coaches take an active role in moni-toring the academic standing of their athletes. Coaches require student-athletes to attend study table when on the road for an extended period, and several coaches have also adopted a study table policy at home. If a student-athlete is struggling academically, there are several avenues of help available. Tutors are available specifi cally for student-athletes, and student-athletes can also utilize the general Gonza-ga University tutors, study labs and computer work stations available to the entire student population. The success of the attention paid to the aca-demic welfare of the student-athletes is refl ected in their performance in the classroom. During the 2008-09 academic year, 85 student-athletes earned their way on to the President’s List with a grade point average of 3.7 or higher, and 80 were on the Dean’s List with a GPA of 3.5-3.69. Overall, Gonzaga’s 300-plus student-athletes combined for a 3.22 GPA for the spring semester, maintaining their cumulative GPA of 3.21. Gonzaga student-athletes constantly dot the West Coast Conference all-academic teams, and on a national scale 20 student-athletes have been named to CoSIDA/Verizon Academic All-America squads. The Gonzaga baseball program has pro-duced six Academic All-America accolades, in-cluding Eric Rodland and Jared Hertz, both two-time honorees.

Mission Statement of Gonzaga University Gonzaga University belongs to a long and distinguished tradition of humanistic, Catholic, and Jesuit education. We are committed to preserving and developingthat tradition and communicating it to our students and alumni. As humanistic, we recognize the essential role of human creativity, intelligence, and initiative in the construction of society and culture. As Catholic, we affi rm the heritage which has developed through two thousand years of Christian living, theological refl ection, and authentic interpretation. As Jesuit, we are inspired by thevision of Christ at work in the world, transforming it by His love, and calling men and women to work with Him in loving service of the human community. All these elements of our tradition come together within the sphere of free intellectual inquiry characteristic of a university. At Gonzaga, this inquiry is primarilyfocused on Western culture, within which our tradition has developed. We also believe that a knowledge of traditions and cultures different from our own draws us closer to the human family of which we are a part and makes us more aware of both the possibilities and limitations of our own heritage. Therefore, in addition to our primary emphasis on Western culture, we seek to provide for our students some opportunity to become familiar with a variety of human cultures. In the light of our own tradition and the variety of human societies, we seek to understand the world we live in. It is a world of great technological progress, scien-tifi c complexity and competing ideologies. It offers great possibilities for cooperation and interdependence, but at the same time presents us with the fact of widespread poverty, hunger, injustice, and the prospect of degeneration and destruction. We seek to provide for our students some understanding of contemporary civilization; and we invite them to refl ect with us on the problems and possibilities of ascientifi c age, the ideological differences that separate the peoples of the world, and the rights and responsibilities that come from commitment to a free society. In thisway we hope to prepare our students for an enlightened dedication to the Christian ideals of justice and peace.

Thayne McCulloh - Interim PresidentThayne McCulloh - Interim President Dr. Thayne McCulloh (BA, ’89) became Gonzaga University’s interim president in the summer of 2009, suc-ceeding the eleven-year ten-ure of Jesuit President Father Robert J. Spitzer. McCulloh, with 19 years as a Gonzaga administrator, knows that it is his job – ‘interim’ title not-withstanding – to collaborate with other Gonzaga stake-holders and continue to build upon Fr. Spitzer’s remarkable legacy. In fall 2009, Gonzaga enrolled its largest fresh-man class ever, more than 1,200 students, bringing the university overall enrollment to more than 7,500. While con-tinued success in all ways is important to McCulloh, sustaining and reinforcing the mission of Gonzaga as a Jesuit, Catholic and humanistic institution is fundamental to him. “We, as a community, are going to be led fi rst and foremost by our University Mission, which unites us and allows us to re-main focused and faithful to the charge that has been given to all of us,” McCulloh said. “Our fundamental mission is to educate men and women in an environment that is both academically rigorous and distinctively Jesuit, Catholic, and humanistic.”McCulloh knows that environment well. He spent three years here as an undergraduate, earning his bachelor’s degree in psychology, before moving on to Oxford University to earn a doctorate in experimental social psychology. He returned to Gonzaga in 1990 and has held numerous positions – and worked on many projects – over the past 19 years. These include service as interim academic vice president, vice president for administra-tion and planning, associate academic vice president, and dean of student fi nancial services, among others. Gonzaga is ingrained in him. “Gonzaga is our life in a lot of ways,” said McCulloh, who

with wife Julie (BA ’92, MBA ’97, Gonzaga’s dean of admission), has three daughters. “The way we choose to work and live is with an understanding that it’s not merely ‘a job.’ We feel we are participating in something really important. It’s great to be a part of it, and it’s why we feel at home at Gonzaga. It’s hard to draw a sharp distinction between our private life and our life at Gonzaga, as there is an awful lot that we share, as a family, in common with others who work here.

“I came to Gonzaga to get a college education, and what brought me back as an employee was the awareness that this place is about transforming women and men who have unique gifts and talents, and come from all different experiences. Here we ask students to focus on important life questions, and we challenge them to think about what they want to do with their lives that will be of benefi t to their fellow human beings. That’s a powerful and important endeavor in a world so desperately in need of it,” McCulloh said. Born in Los Angeles and raised in Washington, D.C. and Se-attle, McCulloh attended Seattle’s Bishop Blanchet High School. Following high school, he completed a three-year enlistment as a food service sergeant in the U.S. Army. He arrived at Gonzaga in its centennial year (1986), served as a resident assistant and resi-dent director, was president of Alpha Sigma Nu (the Jesuit honor society), and was elected student body president. He, Julie, and their three daughters are big fans of Gonzaga sports and attend home games when their schedules permit. McCulloh will serve as interim president pending the selec-tion of a permanent Jesuit president by the Board of Trustees.

Green Indoor Rowing Facility giving GU one of the most progressive indoor training facilities on the West Coast. The 5,225-square foot facility houses more than fi fty rowing machines and three high-defi nition plasma televisions that are integrated into a computerized rowing program that allows student-athletes to compete with each other as a team. In 2007, Roth and Gonzaga added Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field. The home to Bulldog baseball is an advanced lighted facility that incorporates an old-time baseball feel. The

new stadium includes 1,300 theater-style seats and classic brick detailing. Finally, in the summer of 2008, Roth and Gonzaga added the Gonzaga Soc-cer Field, the Diedrick/DeLong Athletic Training Center and a new Academic Lab. Up next for Roth and Gonzaga is a new indoor tennis and golf facility. The indoor golf and tennis facility will include a golf practice area along with six tennis courts. It will also feature men’s and women’s locker rooms. Roth’s ties to Gonzaga extend far beyond his time as Athletic Director. A native of Moses Lake, Wash., Roth played basketball at Big Bend Community College, and fi nished his collegiate career at Willamette University where he graduated with a B.S. in sociology in 1979. He received his master’s in athletic administration and physical education from Gonzaga in 1983.
