Ecosan Services Foundation (ESF) is a section 25 non-profit company established in 2006 with

the support of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and

seecon international, in association with the Innovative Ecological Sanitation Network of

India (IESNI). Ecosan Services foundation aims to transform into a sustainable key resource

centre as a leading knowledge hub in sustainable sanitation and water management. With a

unique mix of knowledge and experience; we work closely with the public and private

sectors. Since the conception of this company, ESF has gained extensive experience in

capacity development, policy building, awareness raising, project implementation and

consulting in the field of sustainable sanitation. Please find attached our Capability

Statement and brochure for your reference.

It gives me immense pleasure to present before you the annual report of Ecosan Services

Foundation, for the financial year 2008-2009. I am sure the report will provide reflection of the

various activities performed by ESF, along with its networking partners.

The chosen and adapted approach of organization – “An open source knowledge provider”, has

proven to be strong back bone in overall growth, by having very strong affiliation with many

likeminded organizations. This has helped to a great extent to increase ESF’s visibility across the

country and region, in rural as well as urban areas, in sanitation sector, in which ESF has

concentrated for its activities.

For year 2008-2009, falling in “International Year of Sanitation” saw up scaling of activities in

sanitation world over. The highly neglected area of human life “Health & Sanitation” was

brought to the centre stage by UN by declaring 2008 as International Year of Sanitation to give

push to millennium Development Goals (MDG’s).

This also provided quite a boost to all those involved on water education, sanitation & working

to bring overall improvement in environment conditions. ESF has been not only morally bound

especially after receipt of last year’s UNESCO award for “Best NGO for Water Education in India”,

but very much devoted to contribute its share to the achievement of the MDG’s.

ESF is a section 25 non-profit company established in 2006, with the

support of gtz.

From two members, ESF staff is extended to 8 People until the end

of the financial year 2009 and is still growing. The registered office

is situated in Pune, but activities are spread all over India.

The objective is to provide full ecological sanitation project

packages including consulting, project planning, implementation,

operation and maintenance and project financing.

WATER SAVING URINAL DUAL FLUSH SYSTEM FOR EACH TOILET

MEASUREMENT OF FLOW OF WATER FROM EACH TAP

Eco – office: Water conservation measures

Being working as a promoter for sustainable waste management systems, ESF team thought of carrying out

a pilot scale project in the office premises itself. In future, this would also help create an example of ‘Eco-

friendly’ office and symbolize ESF as not only a promoter but also an implementer of their own promotions.

Thus, to start with; flush systems of all the 3 toilets have been replaced with dual flush system and Water

Saving Urinal (WSU) for gents has been installed in ESF office.

The earlier single flush system used to flush 12L of water while dual flush system flushes about 3L and 8L

of water. Urine from the WSU is being collected and stored. The stored urine will be reused for garden

purposes.

✓ Total water conserved after installing dual flush system is about 200L.

✓ Total water conserved after installing WSU is about 75L/day;

✓ Total urine generated/day from WSU in ESF office is 6.4L;

a) Water audit of Rajendra Nagar by MSc trainee of ESF

An MSc student carried her MSc thesis on ‘Water Audit of Residential buildings in Rajendra Nagar’ from

ESF where she audited 5 buildings in Rajendra Nagar. ‘Vishwa Chandra’ building where ESF is located

was also included in the audit. The steps followed by the trainee were

✓ Preparation of questionnaire;

✓ Checking of flow rates of each equipment, apparatus and fixtures which supply water in the buildings;

and

✓ Identifying and measuring the water loss from leaks (if any).

Kamalini Kuteer

Kamalini Kuteer is a resort about 40km from Pune city. There is a Decentralized Treatment System (DTS)

implemented in the resort. Inoculation of the already constructed treatment system has been carried out and the

system has been put into work. The treated wastewater is being reused in their vegetable garden and also for

landscaping purposes. Water samples of the inlet and the outlet have been collected and analysed twice in next six

months from completion of the system. The results are well within the MPCB norms of treated water reused for

irrigation purposes. The client is satisfied with the results system as it is working efficiently.

Pandharpur

ESF has been assigned a task to submit Detailed Project report (DPR) for different components of Pandharpur with

regard to present conditions of each component, suggestions to amend the loop holes and recommendations for

new development along with the estimated budget. Detailed survey with regard to each component has been

carried out wherein the following points in each component have been considered.

• Systematic Waste and Septic Tank-

• Evacuation and safe disposal

• Septic Tank over load

• General Observations

• Cleaning up of open drains and repairing of broken parts,

Katewadi Eco-village project

Katewadi, Tehsil Baramati, Dist. Pune, Maharashtra, located to the east of Baramati,

about 10 km away is awarded as a ‘Nirmal Gram’ village for achieving zero-open

defecation village. Under ‘Katewadi: Eco-village’ project scope, Ecosan Services

Foundation (ESF) has been assigned the task of providing a sustainable solution for

sanitation facilities and wastewater generated in Katewadi. Further to this, ESF will also

provide consultancy and monitoring of the implemented system at 2 locations i.e.

Primary school and Public Health Care Centre.

a) Primary school

The toilet block which is connected to the treatment system has been already

constructed. Draft Tender Document along with re-worked design and drawings

of school toilet block and estimated budget has been submitted to the school

authorities and Katewadi Gram Panchayat for further procedures. The designed

toilet blocks have

• Boys’ toilet block: 3 toilets, 6 urinals, 3 wash basins

• Girls’ toilet block: 3 toilets, 2 wash basins

• Kindergarten children: 2 toilets + wash area

Physically challenged: 1 toilet block

b) Public Health Care Centre (PHC), Kanheri

A community toilet block and a Decentralized Treatment System (DTS) will be

constructed near the PHC. ESF has provided with the Draft Tender Document

along with design and drawing details, cost estimation of the toilet block and DTS

to the Gram Panchayat. The DTS is designed considering treatment of wastewater

coming from the PHC, Gram Panchayat office, nearby community, Hanuman

temple and marriage hall. The designed toilet blocks have

• Male toilet block: 4 toilets, 7 Urinals, 3 Wash basins

• Female toilet block: 5 toilets and 3 wash basins

• Ecosan must be further promoted on all levels, in particular for rural or peri-urban areas and for schools. These are areas where the sanitation coverage is particularly

low, or where improved hygiene and sanitation behaviours can have the long-lasting impact.

• Furthermore, still more efforts must be put in capacity building with all relevant stakeholders – there is still a significant lack of skilled personnel who can actually

design and implement ecosan approaches, and further work is also necessary to more firmly root the approach on an institutional level.

• In order to apply logistics and reuse projects on a larger level, an increased effort is necessary to build capacity in the agricultural sector, and to implement reuse

solutions in cooperation with professionals from the agricultural sector.

• Further efforts are needed to implement cost-effective and reuse-oriented sanitation systems that are mass replicable, include treatment, reuse and logistics systems

that can be easily reproduced. Such concepts are based on a better monitoring of case studies, and improved operation and maintenance concepts.

• There is a need for further interaction on continued level with all those stakeholders and especially govt dept. who have now concentrated on Solid/Liquid waste

management post open defecation free areas.
