Welcome to Worship - August 17, 2014 Welcome to St Matthew’s. Jesus welcomed everyone; that is our aim, too. We pray you’ll be nourished in faith as you hear God’s message for you today. Introduction for the Day: In Isaiah we hear that God’s house shall be a house of prayer for all people and that God will gather the outcasts of Israel. The Canaanite woman in today’s gospel is a Gentile, an outsider, who is unflinching in her request that Jesus heal her daughter. As Jesus commends her bold faith, how might our church extend its mission to those on the margins of society? In our gathering around word and meal we receive strength to be signs of comfort, healing, and justice for those in need. A Library Book is given to the church library by Sue Haberman in celebration of the life of husband, Keith Haberman. Tanzania Travelers: A group of St Matthew’s people are currently visiting our partners in Mt. Meru vicinity of Tanzania. They are Darla Hium, Kelly Kirtley, Pat Gardner, Gretchen Haugse and Pastor Chris Manke. Keep them in your prayers for a meaningful visit and to bless the people who are graciously hosting them. Why are some people wearing nametags? We wear nametags on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month in order for us to know more people on Sunday mornings. Hunger Baskets to be passed today: When the offering plates are passed later in the service, it is followed by a basket This second collection will be directed toward local and world hunger. Thank you for your additional donations. Alleluia! After two and years of searching for a pastor, last week the congregation voted to extend a call to Pr. Matt Kruse to become the full-time associate pastor at St. Matthew’s. We are excited to get to know Pr. Matt and will share more information as it becomes available Praise be to God! Special thanks to the Call Committee for their faithful work. Ebola Virus Outbreak - You can help by making a gift

to Global Health Ministries

John Schilling, a member of St. Matthew’s, has traveled to Africa several times to work with an organization called Global Health Ministries. One of the countries where Global Health Ministries provides services is Liberia, which is a part of the current ebola outbreak. The ebola virus is difficult to treat, and often fatal. A friend of John’s, Scott Lien is working to organize shipping needed supplies, especially (PPE) personal protection equipment.

Global Health Ministries continues the healing ministry of Jesus Christ by enhancing health care programs of Lutheran churches in other countries. At this organization’s request, we are making available to you a way to contribute funds to directly combat the Ebola virus through the purchase of PPE and medicines. Specifically, two-thirds of these donations will go toward the PPE for two Lutheran Hospitals and one- third to the Ministry of Health for distribution.

Respectful Conversations Groupmeets to discuss being welcomingYou are cordially invited to come At St. Matthew’s we are a welcoming community. The key words of our Mission Statement, “Welcome, Nurture, Equip, and Send” begin with “Welcome,” and our Welcome and Evangelism committee has worked hard to make us more welcoming with procedures for reaching out to welcome people who are new to us. Now God is calling us to turn to focus on welcome to a deeper level. A new group has come forward calling themselves the “Respectful Conversations Group.” This group is focused on deepening our welcome of all people who come to St. Matthew’s – both those who are already members and those who have just walked through our doors. Our community is made up of a variety of family types (married, single, divorced, partnered – children, no children) and people of various ethnicities and sexual orientations. This group will be holding “respectful conversations” to listen for the guidance of the Spirit and discern how we can become even more welcoming of all people. If you would like to join in these conversations, watch the Sunday bulletins or call the church office to find out the dates of the next meetings.

Large-Print bulletins: Do you have vision problems, or is someone you know dealing with that challenge? It has been suggested that we create a large print bulletin each week for the Order of Service - the part of the bulletin that lists the parts of the worship service. If this sounds like something you or someone you know would use, sign up on today’s sign-up panel - or call the church office during the week.
