St. Matthew’s congregation reaches out in care and concern to a family in a difficult time

Help Support The Zeuskes with Your DonationsDan and Karen Zeuske are experiencing the biggest challenge in their lives. Dan has been struggling with prostate cancer, stage IV, which has spread to several other areas in his body. He has endured debilitating chemotherapy and living in pain, all the while being a dad and a husband.

Dan and Karen’s youngest son, Joseph, lives wtih prune belly syndrome and Dandy Walker Syndrome. He is limited in mobility and receives most of his nutrition through a feeding tube. Only his mom, dad, or a nurse can safely look after him.

As Dan’s endurance has suffered, Karen’s caretaking responsibilities have increased. Because Joseph has grown, a lift is needed to assist in his care, but it cannot be accommodated in the duplex where they live.

Medical costs are staggering, so moving to a larger apartment is not an option at this time.

Now is the time for us to embrace and nurture the Zeuske family through this fundraiser. They are most grateful for all the prayers and concern offered on their behalf.

Respectful Conversations Group now forming - All are welcomeAt St. Matthew’s we are a welcoming community. The key words of our Mission Statement, Ò Welcome, Nurture, Equip, and SendÓ begin with Ò Welcome,Ó and our Welcome and Evangelism committee has worked hard to make us more welcoming with procedures for reaching out to welcome people who are new to us.Now God is calling us to turn to focus on welcome to a deeper level. A new group has come forward calling themselves the Ò Respectful Conversations Group.” This group is focused on deepening our welcome of all people who come to St. Matthew’s – both those who are already members and those who have just walked through our doors. Our community is made up of a variety of family types (married, single, divorced, partnered – children, no children) and people of various ethnicities and sexual orientations. This group will be holding Ò respectful conversationsÓ to listen for the guidance of the Spirit and discern how we can become even more welcoming of all people. If you would like to join in these conversations, please see Pr. Margaret or come to the first meeting which will be held on June 10 at 7:00 p.m.

Salvadoran Pastoral Team Needs Our Help - Your Donation Will Supply Food for Pastors During Economic CrisisThe Salvadoran Lutheran Church is a church of the poor, intentionally establishing congregations in communities where poverty, hunger, access to clean water, and violence are problems. The backbone of the church is its team of pastors and leaders who tirelessly and compassionately serve these communities, consoling families victimized by gang violence, comforting during sickness, finding resources for those who struggle with hunger. They are truly the hands and feet of Jesus, walking with the poor in humility and love. Now these pastors need our help. As a result of a financial crisis in the church, many of them have not been paid since last fall. The Greater Milwaukee Synod Committee on El Salvador is working to raise funds to supply the pastoral body with three installments of basic food items to help them weather the crisis as the church works toward sustainability. Your donation, labeled ÒS alvadoran Pastor FoodÓ will help make this compassionate response a reality. Please see the display in the Commons for more information. Thanks for your help!

Fundraiser underway for St. Matthew’s family with challenges and strugglesYou can make a difference in the lives of faithful St. Matthew’s members Dan, Karen, Ben, Nicholas and Joseph Zeuske. In order to accommodate the equipment necessary to care for Joseph at home, they need to move from their small duplex to a larger space. Those expenses plus medical bills for Dan’s cancer treatment and Joseph’s frequent hospital visits have severely strained their finances.UPDATE:THANK YOU for your generosity with financial donations in this past week; totals will be shared soon. There will also be a website donation page for future gifts, through the goal date of June 30, 2014. Special thanks to the small groups who worked so creatively and generously on a variety of ways to inspire gifts to the Zeuskes. Their efforts were very effective in raising a good amount of money and also awareness of the Zeuskes’ struggles in the last eighteen months. The website GoFundMe donation costs 8% of the total given, so if you want all of your donation to go to the Zeuskes, a check made out to St. Matthew’s will accomplish this.“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:34-35

Luther - Bach - Germany - Krakow - Prague

Have any plans yet for late April – early May 2015? Interested in seeing the places where Martin Luther lived, preached, and where our Lutheran heritage began? An itinerary has been put together for St. Matthew’s by AMi Travel which visits all the Luther sites you’ve heard about in your Sunday school and confirmation classes – Erfurt, Eisenach, Eisleben, Leipzig, and Witten-berg. Additionally, we will visit Krakow, Auschwitz, the beautiful city of Prague, and Berlin. Our emphasis will be on history and music, and along the way there will be breathtaking scenery, magnificent churches and, of course, lots of gemutlichheit.Questions? Contact Pastor Chris Manke (Ph. 414-774-0441; email [email protected]) or Linda Levengood (Ph. 414-427-9672; email [email protected]). We are still taking names of interest-ed parties. There will be an organizational meeting of those interested in October.

A Chance to have an impact on the future: St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church has many opportunities to support the young people in our congregation. However, at this time there is a unique opportunity to support two young adults who were nurtured and grew up in our congregation. Amy Erickson and Matthew Petersen have made decisions to follow their passion to serve our Lord. Amy is in the process of attaining her Doctorate of Theology at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkley, California. Matthew is pursuing his Master of Arts in Ministry in the seminary at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. Both have shared God’s love with the underprivileged within our borders and/or in foreign countries. Both are seeking to further share God’s love through achieving higher education degrees, allowing them to better serve. There have been many recent articles published about the extreme cost of higher education. Schools of theology are no exception. As a church community and individuals we may not be able to go out and serve God as these two young adults have chosen, but we can serve by offering our monetary support to lessen the burden of the cost of tuition. If you choose to support Matthew and Amy in their mission to serve God, please make your contributions payable to St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church and designate it as “Tuition Support for Theology Students.”

What’s It About? - What will children be learning?

St. Matthew’s Vacation Bible School 2014

Join us August 4th-8th from 8:45 - 11:45 a.m. for a week of faith-filled activities

Junior kindergartners through 5th graders are invited to a week of learning Bible Stories through

games, crafts, songs, skits and experiments.

This year’s VBS theme is “Workshop of Wonders: Imagine and Build with God” from Cokesbury

Publishers.

Children will encounter amazing wonders when they imagine and build with God. They will discover biblical

characters who experienced the extraordinary when they used their hands, hearts, and minds to

imagine, build, grow, work and walk with God. Lessons include: The Story of Esther; Rebuilding the Lord’s

House; Parable of the Mustard Seed; Feeding the 5,000; and Walking to Emmaus. And of course, several

great songs!

Friends and community members are always welcome.

VBS at St. Matthew’s is an incredible experience for the children of St Matthew’s and a fantastic outreach for the children of our community. Each year we continue to grow our attendance number, but not our number of adult volunteers. Adults, we ask that you prayerfully consider signing up to teach VBS or be a Tour Guide. We need your help! It is the volunteers that make this program so successful. Please feel free to give me a call if you have questions or schedule limitations. Thank you for helping us to continue to spread the Good News!

Continued by Popular Demand!

This organization accepts donations of books of all kinds. The newest books, with resale value, are the most helpful to them, as they post them on Amazon.com and resell them. But even old books can be recycled.

Most of the 15 employees have spent time on the street, or even in prison, and never held full-time jobs before. Milwaukee Working is a faith-based non-profit aimed at creating jobs in the heart of one of the most improverished cities in America.

Bring your books; they will also accept CDs, DVDs, and games in good condition. Tax receipts available.

If you need help unloading your car, let us know!

“Milwaukee Working” Book Collection continues a few more weeks: We’re collecting books again for the “Milwaukee Working” agency which employs men in urban areas where jobs are scarce. Can you donate some of your old, unused books?

Tosa Interfaith Helps Our SeniorsRecently I visited two of our members; a couple. One of the members is a care giver for the spouse and rarely gets a chance to go out alone. As we talked I realized that Tosa Interfaith might be able to help this situation. I gave Diane Euting a call (414-453-5750) at Tosa Interfaith and she was immediately able to match this couple with a volunteer who will come once a week for four hours so that the caregiver will have a little time out each week. Older adults in the Tosa area have many needs like this, needs for rides to the doctor, for grocery shopping, for companion visits, for phone visits, and for doing light housekeeping such as cleaning or grass cutting. Can you consider giving a few hours per month to help the elderly in our community? Once you sign up you have complete flexibility on how much or how little you do and when you do it. Maybe once a month, maybe weekly, maybe only a couple of times a year. The choice is yours – and it’s a wonderful opportunity to meet inter-esting people. - Pr. Margaret
