W isdom Literature and Psalms Zoom Class

Deacon Michael Russo will be teaching the course Wisdom Literature & Psalms. This six week Zoom course will study the biblical Wisdom Literature and selected Psalms with a focus on their underlying message and the literary contribution of ancient Israel to world literature. M ass for Students Entering or returning to

college. Bishop Mark will celebrate the annual Mass for all students entering or returning to college and their families this Sunday, August 8th at 7:00 PM at the Our Lady of the Alleghenies Shrine in Loretto. Those who graduated from high school in 2021 and are entering the military or workforce are also invited. Bishop will have a great message, a special blessing, and even a little gift.

T he Knights of Columbus Gathering

The Knights of Columbus do much more than add solemnity and pageantry to Masses. At the upcoming 2021 gathering of knights in the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, their tradition of helping neighbors in need will surely be highlighted. The annual celebration is scheduled for October 17th in Loretto. Bishop Mark will celebrate Mass at 2:00 PM at the Basilica of Saint Michael the Archangel. A social and dinner will immediately follow in the Our Lady of Loretto Community Hall next to the Basilica and Saint Michael School. The guest speaker will be Pennsylvania State Deputy Kenneth Grugel. All knights, their family, friends, and fellow parishioners are invited to the Mass and dinner. “Please consider reaching out to a potential new member in your area and invite him and his spouse to this annual gathering,” urged the Bishop to his brother knights. “I look forward to praying and being with all of you.” The cost of the dinner is $15 for adults and $7.50 for children 12 and younger. V igil Light Intention This week the Vigil Light, the

sign of the true presence of the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, will burn adjacent to St. Mary’s tabernacle in loving memory of Harry Domino; requested by his family.

INTRODUCTION FOR TODAY’S READINGS The Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

1 Kings 19:4-8 The prophet Elijah lived about 800 years before Christ. Because he was loyal to God, he fell into disfavor with King Ahab and Queen Jezabel. He had to flee for his life to Mt. Horeb (also known as Mt. Sinai). Today’s passage takes place at the beginning of his flight.

Ephesians 4:30 – 5:2 This part of the letter to the Ephesians contains more practical advice for Christian living. The author says that actions which cause division in a community are simply unacceptable. Today’s reading points out mutual forgiveness is seen as essential for any group that calls itself Christian. There is an echo here of part of the Lord’s prayer.

Patris Corde, 3. (With a Father’s Heart) An Obedient Father,

Protector of the Holy Family As an obedient servant of God, Joseph upon a message from God. Jesus, the Son of God, was an infant when the angel in a second dream tells Joseph, “Get up. Take the child and his mother and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child and destroy him.” Joseph did not hesitate to obey, regardless of the hardship involved. He got up, took the child and his mother by night and went to Egypt. It was a long and dangerous 90 mile journey on foot with only a donkey—no wheels of any kind, no highways, no paved roads, but only dirt roads, windy paths, and treacherous walking with many possible dangerous hills. This week as we think of Joseph’s second dream, would we even consider such a trip under those conditions? We pray to St. Joseph to accept changes and hardships, always asking for courage and his Divine assistance. St. Joseph, obedient father and protector of the Holy Family, pray for us. Stewardship Reflection The city of Ephesus was one of St. Paul’s first centers of ministry. One of his major purposes in writing to the Ephesians was to encourage them and to make it clear to them as Gentiles that they have been brought together with the Jews in the Body of Christ. St. Paul includes an important piece of advice that we need to act on too, “All bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, and reviling must be removed from you, along with malice. And be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ.” Forgiveness must be important to us if we truly wish to be Christians and good stewards. Just as Jesus was sent by the Father, we must live as we believe that we are in unity with God the Father when we partake of Jesus the Bread of life, “that came down from Heaven.” Unity is important and needed, as much now as in the early Church. All students in St. Mary and St. Michael parishes, Pre K - 11th grade will be combined with students from both parishes! All classes will meet from 8:45 AM to 9:45 AM. We are excited to start Religious Ed classes this year. We are in need of additional help to make this transition go smoothly. Besides the need for more catechist, we will need parents to assist in zooming each class session, people to direct students to proper class rooms and be available in the hall ways to assist where and when needed. Please give prayerful consideration to volunteering to assist in anyway that you are able. Together we can make the transition a smooth one and grow together in our faith. Parents are asked to complete the online registration THIS WEEK if they haven’t done so already:
