    All entries are in. There will be 24 teams toeing theline at the corner of East 89th Street and Lexington Avenue onJune 23 for the ninth running of the Manhattan-to-PeekskillRoad Relay. The Central Mass Striders have opted out thisyear, so a new champion will be crowned. There has beend e b a t e i n s o m e c i r c l e s a b o u t w h e t h e r t h e Ta c o n i c " B " t e a m w i l lbeat the Taconic Masters or not. At this point, while no cashhas been anted-up, a case or two of MacEwans is reportedly onthe line. Also in this connection, some of the Masters areconsidering spotting the B's some time because of the B'shandicap (Doug Miller.)

Bad news arrived here at TRRC World Headquarters last week.TRRC has lost its secretary, Coleen Law, who has left thecountry quickly. She'a off to bonnie Scotland, thence toColombia (the country, not the Ivy League footballpowerhouse). Coleen will be establishing TRRC-South AmericaDivision (SAD). All wishing to join this SAD group of runnerscan send 25,000 Colombian pesos to TRRC/SAD, P.O. Box 99,Bogota, Colombia, 10505. Your membership card will be smuggledback into the US in a glassine envelope.

Good news arrived here TRRC Intergalactic Headquarters lastweek. TRRC has found an interim (until death or senility takesover) secretary, Melanie Benvenue. Melanie, as you may know, now speaks with a decidedly nautical accent. Last night atour monthly meeting, she was heard asking for another glass ofstarboard, or was that port?

Somewhere in this issue you will find an application thatmay used to obtain a TAC number. Some people have asked meabout how to get one since a number of races, notably the NYCMarathon, require all runners to have a TAC number. Just fillin the blanks and send money ($12) to MAC (not TRRC).TRRC i s a TAC c lub , ou r c lub I t i s 789 , th i s i n fo rmat ion hasalready been entered on the application (what a time saver!)

The reported death of the Boston Atlernative was greatlyexaggerated. Owen McCrudden, TRRC past president, hasgrabbed the event, pulled it from the precipice andbreathed new life into it. Owen will be making somesignificant improvements in the 1992 event. It is alreadybeing called the Resurrection Alternative, although I don'tbe l ieve i t w i l l be he ld on Eas te r.

  • SYBIL - 1991by Hagar

Sybil rode in this year on Saturday, April 20 to be metby a band of 25 hardy ruimers determined to challengeher grueling hills, minus the torrid heat of last year - like45 degrees cooler, with temperatures in the low fifties anda cool breeze. One could not ask for better running conditions. John and Helga Lahoud from North Andover,MA were the champs this year with times of 3:42:57 and4:16:19 respectively. This is the third time John has runSybil with two wins and one place. An enviable recordindeed. His wife Helga ran Sybil in 1989 and 1991, capturing the female title both times. This year she placedfifth overall, well ahead of second-place woman RuthGreher, 5:09:17 and third-place Erika Abraham, 5:16:36.

This duet - a formidable force - indicates a retum nextyear to challenge the course records of Bill Lawder,3:19:56, set in 1981, and Eileen Corley, 3:55:14, set in1986. This year's second-place fmisher, who was lastyear's wirmer in the 95-degree heat, was Frank DeLeofrom Brooklyn, who finished in 3:48:55.

In his first attempt at the ultras, our own AnthonyGalfano clocked an outstanding 3:54:27 for third placeand bragging rights to the title of Taconic's "MachoMan". The "ultra people" feel that the .effort expended inrunning Sybil with her tortuous hills is the equivalent ofrurming fifty miles rather than 50 kilometers.

By all reports, a satisfying experience was had by all. This could not have been accomplished except for thededicated corps of volunteers consisting of Steve Quinnand his son Ryan, club president Ed McLaughlin, PeteCorsino Rich Adamski, Howie Solow, Jim Hamilton,Steve Calidonna and dependable Ed Dillon. A nod of thehead to all nine of them, without whom there would beno Sybil.

    Until next year.

  • Rudi Hinhorn received the following letter and photofrom Dave O' I oole, who was stationed in Saudi Arabiaduring the Persian Gulf conflict:

    D e a r R u d i ;

Wie geht's, mein Treund! Thanks for the tee-shirt. Ivshall wear it with pride. I am back to running again, thankGod. We run in the morning and try to get at least fourmiles in. 1 am also doing a lot of calisthenics - sit-ups andpush-ups so I won't be left in your dust!

We will be here for approximately 6-8 weeks. It's a longtime to wait on line to go home, but a lot shorter than Ihad originally expected. But I should now learn to expectthe unexpected. Things here have quieted down. The bigevent here at the Dhahron Police HQ is traffic accidentsand US convoys blocking the highways. There is a lot ofequipment coming to the port area here and there is notcnougli room!

Please give my regards to all, and especially Norma. Ihope to see you for the Lincoln Hall race.

    Sincerely,D a v e O '

  • GOOD LUCK NOEL!

TRRC is losing one its own to the Sunshine State as Noel Lazarus celebrateshis 62nd birthday with retirement and relocation from Putnam Valley toPunta Gorda, Florida.

After spending the last 29 years as a teacher in the New York City schoolsystem, Noel and his wife Dolores who also taught for 28 years, have decidedto permanently pack in the New York winters.

Noel has been a club member for the past 12 years and for us who have knownhim over the years, his decision to relocate to Florida is no surprise. Noelhas always had an aversion to cold weather and ,in fact, he starts wearing hisrunning gloves and a scarf shortly after Labor Day.

While Noel would probably like to be remembered for his 3:28 marathon whichhe ran with Jerry Taub 4 years ago ( Noel has run eight) he will probably bebetter remembered as the winner of the second annual Best Buns contest ( CarmeloRoldan eat your heart out) and his unorthodox hand movements during his runswhich resemble the side to side motion of windshield wipers on a rainy day.

Although Noel looks forward to Florida, especially since his brother Richardlives down there, he is going to miss the Club and FDR Park which he has sharedwith his TRRC "big family". This big family has included special runningpartners such as Wendy Shile, Robinson Ortiz, Rick Salemmo and his "hero"Bob Rogan who he's been chasing for the past 12 years.

For those of us who have known Noel we've had the pleasure of knowing agentleman and a real class act Noel we all wish you and Dolores thebest in your new home. Good running!

This year's track series Has Mon by 'coae-froa-behind" coapetitors as both the Open and Masterswinners won their events on the last night of the prograa by aaking up events. Rich Lucatuorto'stotal points of 4010 and Mike Daley's aasters point total of 3195 were the highest totals datingback to 1984 (since I've been keeping records), hhile Rich was clearly ahead in his division,Hike Daley had to cooe through with 3 races (400ffl, BOOa & 1600a) on the last night to win. There were sone excellent perforaances on the track and I would like to thank those leabers whoBade it a coapetitive event.

    Till next year, Anthony Galfano.

  • G L A D I A T O R M E E T S W E S T C H E S T E Rby Deb Yagoda

    T H E S T O R Mby Deb Yagoda

I was out on Oregon Road last Sunday. Running. It hadbeen three years since I'd moved to Mohegan Lake fromBrooklyn. My parents moved too, five miles away, toSchool Street, and since their house was ready to live in andours wasn't, we moved in there. Out the door I went. Thefirst surface my sneakers met was Oregon Road. Anyroad. The first glimpse I'd had of Westchester's hills was frommy realtor's car. The perspective on foot was a differenttrip. I arrived at something called Alpine Drive. "Hramm..."I said in my flatlander's ignorance. "This looks interesting."Up I went. Up, up, up. By the time that road broke offonto something else with an altitudinous name, I'd packedin and slunk back down. I felt a nosebleed coming on, andwas reminded of a childhood encounter with an overinflatedbeach ball.

That winter, I moved into my house. Out the door Iwent. The first surface my sneakers met was Mohegan Avenue. Where I come from, anything with "Avenue" in thename means that your coffee won't slide more than an inchor two along your dashboard. This one went up about 400feet in half a mile. It had guard rails, blind curves, noshoulders, and houses leaning over it. I ran Fenimore andCooper. No James. The scenic Indian names were reallygetting on my nerves. I wound up in the woods somewherenear some sort of tank, ribs hurting, heart pounding, wondering what had made me think I was a conditioned athlete. How did a kid from Flatbush wind up on such inhospitableterrain?

After a few years, I got used to going up all the time. What I hadn't gotten used to was getting dusted on a regular basis by guys built like linebackers. Where I comefrom, nothing over 140 pounds could keep up with me.Anyway, it was Sunday, and my too-small house was beingrenovated. We were once again bunking on School Street.Out the door I went. I thought about my virgin ascent, andpassed on Alpine Drive, much as the Gladiator would'veliked to go there. Checked out Red Mill Road instead. Itwas hard, but Td seen a lot of hills in my three years'expatriation from Brooklyn. Tinker Hill, Bryant PondRoad, Hardscrabble Road, the sand dunes at Pound Ridge, and number one in the Lung-Busters Hit Parade, Stairwayto Heaven, so named by one handsome major, that one-mile schlep in the final stage of the Croton Reservoir run,up, up, up, in three ghastly phases of ever-increasing quad-bum, up past the goats and horses, up past the rabbits andducks, up past the sheep and the geese. Past the bull. Neversaw stuff like this on the Coney Island boardwalk. Nevergot stuff lime this on my sneaJkers in the city.

And so for lack of a better moral to this story, I'velearned that I can eventually get up anything I find in frontof me. And for lack of a better pace, I can be pleased in theknowledge that sometimes, 'eventually' is all I need.

I had just gotten to the park. The first few warning dropshad already decorated my windshield, and there were tworunners refusing to budge from imder the bathroom roof."This is stupid, might as well go. It's only gonna get worse."I was getting impatient. What's the big deal about a littlefork in the sky? Then Louis entertained us with the storyof a relative who got vaporized on his own porch duringjust such weather as this. We discussed golf courses, Prospect Park and other places famous for athletes' roasts."Gee," we said incredulously, "didn't they know better?"Carmelo drove up, three big metal ladders threatening fromhis roof. We groaned. Oddly enough, more and more runners appeared in the darkening gloom, filling up the littleconcrete platform under the roof, like Hitchcock's crowson the jungle gym. And discussions of P.R.s and racesbroke out. Caw, caw, caw. I was getting more impatient. If there was one thing I was not in the mood for, with only13 miles in for the week, was everyone else's dids and gonnados. I wanted to go out, I looked at my watch and up at thesky, One guy drove up, looked at the group of doubtfulfaces under the roof and set off anyway. Five minutes later,he came sprinting back, heedless of form, doubtless withvisions of his own barbecue.

Soon the sky looked a little less black. I took a few stepsout, away from the dubious comfort of my fellows; thejacked-up metabolisms of those well-muscled bodies werecranking out more heat than the Coming Glassworks.Suddenly came a deafening crash that sent us falling all overeach other in fright. For a few minutes, we just lookedaround, dazed. We admired the hair standing on each others' napes and arms. We were convinced not to mess withthat kind of power. "I'm outta here!" we chorused, scattering from under the roof like cockroaches when the kitchenlight goes on.

Now, boys and ^Is, the Gladiator would like to know;how many of you drove home under suddenly brighteningskies and subsiding rain, and forgot all about how scary itwas? Raise your hands if you went out to run.
