I've decided to try a new format this month instead of the usual one. My thoughts of Spring andtraveling to London are as random as these thoughts but here goes...

Great job to Gerald Radlauer, Barbara Brittan, Steve Quinn, Jack Brennan and Tara Maguire on racedirectorships that were amazing. We had a record turnout and a great time was had by all. Thank youvery much to all the TRRC volunteers who really make these races work. It's not easy sitting out inthe cold for hours and making sure that the race runs well.

Happy feet awards go out to all the TRRC members who have gone into New York City and aroundthe area and participated in races as representatives of the best club in New York. Keep on truckin'and keep those feet happy.

Congratulations to all the Spring marathoners who traveled to Boston, Big Sur, Jersey Shore and London to run the 26.2 miles around these areas. I hopeyou enjoyed the miles and the journey. Great job especially with the tough winter we had.

Give it a break to all the TRRC members who aren't running as fast as they used to run. My Favorite T-shirt in the NYRRC marathon read, "The OlderI Get the Faster 1 Ran." Of course there are my idols Jack Brennan and Harry Neeson that just get better. They are amazing.

HELR.. TRRC need members to take leadership positions within the club. These are anything from a race director to dinner dance coordinator to vicepresident. 1 have been warned and know from history that people do not volunteer by a plea in the newsletter. So what we are looking for is people wholove this club and would like to give back to the running community what it has given them. It is a tough request but I can say from experience, it's awonderful place to be in your life and It feels good. Please call me and we can talk about your role in TRRC or anything.

1 hope to see all of you on May 9th at 7:30 at Downing Park for our monthly meeting. It's a great chance to meet other runners and trade war stories.I hope to see you all then, and have a wonderftil Spring. Lee

As I run through the brush and the brambles,I realize life is full of obstacles.

Yet mine are easy in nature. My cross is small, my burden light.I should not be heard to complain.God has bestowed much in my life.

There are others with heavier burdens.I must look at mine with a smile.

I can overcome all of them with light feet. There are no hills too steep to climb, with effort.

No rivers too deep to cross, with courage. No road too long to traverse, with endurance.

I can endure to the end.But will I appreciate the sun when it is hot?

Or the waters when they turn icy cold?I cannot extend the day even for a second.Nor lessen the frequency ofsprings rains.

/ must accept nature s elements as they occurWhen I stumble on the path I won't complain.

Even if 1 become crippled, each fall is a lesson.J must test the unknown path ahead.

Ready to fall or proceed in due course. There will be decisions to make.

I will make them with thought, but boldly. My path requires consistent effort.

Enduring pain, feeling renewed energy.1 am sustained because of the path.

Through rocks and mud I will continue forward.Up ahead is destiny facing me.

Will 1 have the courage to look at it squarely?1 willingly submit myself to the test.

Eric just completed the LondonMarathon and plans another for the fall.

Provides Opportunity for Members toSave Up to $90 Each

Shrub Oak, April 18 First it's a postage increase, then it's the "dot.coms"tanking, followed by the rest of the market, then it's the China spy planecrisis, now it's a TRRC membership fee increase.

Do these people think we're made of money? So how come?

Basically, we're blaming it on the fact that we get a lot of member complaints about their not receiving our S"* class mailings of the newsletter.Third class gives us a low bulk rate, but unfortunately it is often the casethat your local post office treats your newsletter as just so much junk mail(go figure). The solution is to go to 1" class postage for our newslettermailings. To cover this exorbitant added cost we are forced (kicking &screaming) to raise our basic individual TRRC membership fee by $3.00 to$18.00 (what nerve!) and our family membership will go from $25.00 to$30.00. Individual "student" (under 19) membership will remain at $ 10.00.

This outrageous gouging, the first such increase in almost a decade, willcommence for memberships paid after July 4, 2001, so your last chance torenew or become a new member at the old rates will be at the PutnamCounty Classic.

Now look at the bright side - consider how much you can save by amultiple year renewal. How long do you think you're gonna last? Signupfor 20 years, save $60.00; sign up for 30 years and save a whopping $90.00.That's five years for FREE!!! How's that for a silver lining?

  • M i l l e n n i u m M u d B a t hby Steve Quinn

The Millennium Mud Bath occurredon Sunday March 25 at FDR StatePark. Mothernature provided uswith a fine venue. This year featured perhaps the most mud in thelast 5 years, a water crossing about3 feet deep and packed ice andsnow resembling a glacier at the

3.5-mile mark. The race director was pleased that he didnot get his truck stuck in the mud this year. One hundred sixty-eight (30 more than last year) fun lovingparticipants threw caution to the wind, forgot their ages anddid everything their mother told them never to do. This year'srace was won by last year's second place winner, GerrySullivan, with last year's winner, Armando Oliviera, finishedsecond. In the finer category Joy Jaworski once again wonthe race, since our records are not so good and our memories only marginally better we know she has won at leastevery M&G run back to and including 1994. See the complete results and some fme pictures of the water crossing onour website and elsewhere in this newsletter. This year againfeatured awards for the "Muddiest & Bloodiest", "Big Snort"and "Razorback". The first is self explanatory, the second isfor the most artful water entry and the "Razorback" is a newaward given to someone that represents the true spirit of therace. Regrettably the race director gave the awards butdoes not recall the names of the winners, but you know whoyou are so why not send me e-mail and I'll publish it in thenext newsletter.A race like this could not go off without the help of volunteers, this year was no exception. Thanks to John Hallinan,Pete Meisler, Brian Wheaton, Joe Porcaro, Fred Loehfelm,Joe Handleman, Ed McLaughlin, Bob Davis and Jim Whalenfor help in laying out the course. Thanks to Peg Meisler,Rudi and Justin Einhom, Rich Adamski, Susan Solow, SteveAlbert, Debbie Kenny, Dave O'Toole, Beverly and DonMcCann, Don Villenueve, and Bill and Joanne Bertram forhelp on race day. Many races are similar but this one has its unique featuresand that causes unique events to occur This race was noexception to that rule. Cardinal Eagan sent his personalemissary to bless the race, Fr. Louis Jerome from St. Patrick'sin Yorktown ran the race. Rumor is he tried to run on andthen part the waters, buthe got wet. Jim Manning fromYorktown ran with two small children. He figured they would

last a half-mile or so. He carried one across the water whilethe other used the bridge, they all finished. Brian Sarokencarried his mother. Lee, across the water, well almost across,he dropped her (check out the website picture). Then therewas Bob Davis who laid out the course on Saturday anddeclared that he wished he had not signed up to run but hedid and he won an age group. Second in that age group wasJose Rojas, Jose works in the park and has been one of ourunsung park volunteers for years. He has marveled at allthose crazy runners and wondered what it was all about.Well Jose found out and took second in his age group. KenMartin reported that at the first mud bog he came across arunner sitting in the mud with his hands into it up to his elbows. When asked what he was doing the runner reportedhe was looking for a shoe. Ken suggested he try SuperRunners Shop in White Plains and continued on. This is ar a c e .

Over 30 runners from high school cross countiy teams addedmuch spirit to the race this year and contributed many of the11 teams that competed for the Geronimo cup. Thanks toTaconic member and cross country coach Tim Fulton forbringing them. The winner of the coveted Geronimo Cupthis year was the Somer's Studs, Terry Cordner, BrianKonczewski, Mike Pond and Greg Swiatocha. You guysare required to come next year and bring the cup back. Thanks to everyone who came and helped out and madethis the biggest M&G in my memory.

In searing eariy Spring heat, the laconicRoad Runners' crack volunteer staff helped theRye Derby to an excellent race. At registration, starting more than three hours before the racewent off, were Kathleen D'Ottavio, Rich Adamski,Carol Hansen, Bill and Joanne Bertram, JennLatham (visiting from China just to do this) andNancy Young. Arriving with our new trailer tothe finish line from it's housing spot at the Nash'swere Bill Foley and Steve Quinn, who doublehandedly set up the finish line. The course wasmeasured and managed by Gary Steinel and, allthe way from Cape Cod, Paul Fendler. Paul, withEamonn Coughlan, were the originators of thisrace years ago. The years were not showing onCoughlan, the only masters to run under 4 minutes for the mile, who showed up to run a relaxedrace. Adding to our volunteer core was the racing contingent fresh from their great showing inCentral Park: Deb Kenney, Scott Abercrombie,Joe Porcaro and Tony Galfano. Pete Meislermanned the clicker, as he has done regularly atour races for many years, missing only one racedue to a new hip.

Oh-the winners were fast and really skinny.

  • R U N N I N G I N H I G H P L A C E S

by Bronislaw (**Bronek") CzechIt was a gorgeous February afternoon. There was not a single cloud in asunny sky, and the 70-degree weather seemed unreal. The snow-coveredsummits of Popocatepetl and IxtaccihuatI were clearly visible in the distance above the smog covered Mexico City valley. Despite these almostperfect conditions, Alejandro, my new running partner, and I struggled to

run up a long but not overlysteep hill. I was back again inmy favorite running surroundings, almost 9,000 feet abovesea level,

    Last winter, Anna and I eagerlyresponded to an invitation fromA l e x a n d M a r t a P o s e , o u rArgentinean friends, to visitthem at their house in the mountains near Mexico City. As wehad already known from ourprevious visits, the rapid changeof climate, and especially thechange of altitude, inevitablywould bring some unpleasants e n s a t i o n s . T h e s h o r t n e s s o f

breath and faster than usual heartbeat were to be expected. This time Ibrought along a heart monitor so I could follow my acclimatization processmore closely.

During the first couple of days my morning resting pulse was higher thannormal by about 25 points. In the beginning, a combination of higher altitude and hills made every run a battle as my lungs labored on less oxygen. My legs became numb very quickly. Even at these sub Rocky Mountainheights, the human body loses water very fast, and drinking lots of fluidsplays an important role in fast acclimatization. Thus, four days and severalgallons of water later, my resting heart rate decreased noticeably, althoughit was still greater than at home in Westchester. Even if my acclimatizationwas going well, it was not enough to allow quality workouts which requiremuch more oxygen than my body could assimilate. Under those circumstances, the best 1 could do was to resort to lengthening my daily mileage ata slow pace and give up any type of speedwork.

My training became more enjoyable with the arrival of Marta's brother.Alejandro flew in directly from the Argentinean coast, and running at higherelevation air was a new experience for him. Nevertheless, he decided tocontinue training for his first Ciudad Mar del Plata Marathon. The next dayafter his arrival he joined me for a run. The beginning runs were as hard forhim as they were for me, but by the time my vacation was over, our runsbecame both longer and faster. Even if the immediate gains of our highaltitude training were going to disappear quickly after returning to sea level, the memory of our runs in the thinner air will last for a long time. 1 amconfident that this new experience will benefit Alejandro in his marathontraining, and he will do well in December in Mar del Plata. As for me, aveteran runner, holding pace continues to be an up hill battle even at sealevel .

  • Who Would Ever Run a Marathon?

    By Dr. Tim Maggs

For anyone who's ever crossed that fine line, the one that only takes 26.2miles to get to, and now owns the title of "marathon finisher", you'veprobably been asked this question many times. The insinuations in thequestion are that anyone who would ever consider running a marathon borders on insanity or down right lunacy. Well, do you want to know what It h i n k ?

I t h i n k . . .The marathon should be a requirement for all kids graduating highschool today. All kids would have to complete a marathon beforegraduating, or would have to work 40 hours a week doing communityclean up (for free) until they do complete one.The marathon should become part of an incentive program for prisoners who want early release. The first treatment for anyone with high blood pressure, weight problems, psychological disorders, bowel problems, upper respiratory difTi-culties, self-esteem issues or anxiety disorders should not be medicationor group therapy, but to complete a marathon. If anyone is caught being a bully in life, regardless of age, we should havesome legislative body we can report them to and this body has theauthority to convict this individual and sentence them to run a marathon. Arrogance is bad, humility is good. Marathons promote humility.Anyone sentenced to "community service" must run a marathon. Whatbetter community service could be achieved than to get someone in thecommunity healthier, both mentally and physically?More serious crimes might require 2 marathons in one year, a sentencethat would not allow any time off from training. (Whoa, would this bean inconvenience for someone not used to working out?)There should be a 50% discount on all health insurance premiums withproof-of-running a marathon each year,Community leaders and politicians should be required to run a marathoneach year, rather than annoying everyone by going door-to-door making promises they're unable to keep. A marathon will continually encourage "honest work" instead of more rhetoric the world doesn't need.Leading by example has always proven to be successful.Any family owning more than one vehicle must all run a marathon inorder to get registrations for every vehicle over one.All policemen and firemen must run one marathon per year to be able tocontinue wearing a badge.Anyone who isn't happy in life, can't figure out why life isn't givingback the way it should and is looking for that bigger house, perfect soul-mate or winning lottery ticket, join in and run a marathon. I'm sureyou'll find the answer somewhere along the way.

something to look forward to at the beginning of the day and something to beproud of by the end of the day. And we all inherently know this powerfulfactwe're doing something that most people will never have the guts to try. We're running a marathon. Our self-esteem goes up dramatically. In fact, isn't the scale looking a little kinder these days? Those clothes that just neverseemed to fit on that Monday-morning diet plan all of a sudden fit perfectly. The big clincher in this life-altering metamorphis a person goes throughoccurs on that first day that someone asks you "Have you lost weight?".There's no turning back now!

And the day we cross that finish line, the day we complete the journey westarted 6 or 8 or 10 months earlier, that's the day we can't wait to start all overagain on our next chapter. For what we learn is one simple (icl"Whowouldn't want to run a marathon?" Have a great month.

by Cathy GronemanMy Boston marathon this year was very different from last year's experience. This year 1 ran uninjured. I saw my husband Joe at Mile 10, and my daughtersand grandson at Mile 18, exactly where they said they'd be. The weather waswarmer (53 degrees) and sunny with no headwind, as compared to last year'scooler temperatures.

Barbara Ende and I ran pretty much the races we wanted to, finishing at3:32:32 and 3:40:58 respectively. Ted Pemicano was hampered by leg crampsbut still ran a 3:22:50, Ted reported a Harry Neesom sighting at Mile 6 butlost track of him. According to the computer Harry did cross the finish line.Lucia Chapman was sidelined due to a knee injury but became a Taconicc h e e r l e a d e r .

Barbara and 1 had the added pleasure of making the acquaintance of LorraineHillard, a Brit from Austin, Texas. Lorraine has traveled the world and ranBoston 2001 as her 50th marathon. Wc think she's a Taconic at heart as shelikes to party and doesn't know when to stop running. So in spite of thesunburn and the leg cramps and the blisters and the hills I think we all askLucia's question, "Boston 2002??!!

From my vantage point, there are 2 causes of unhappiness and poor health-the lack of drive and discipline. With technology bringing so much excitement into every room in our house, why would anyone ever need to leave thehouse for fim? And the media is continually telling us to take this pill or that

because "you haven't got time for the pain ", butthe cold truth is, it's all painful. Life hurts toomuch these days, and on too many fronts. Themarathon solves these problems in a fiinch. It reintroduces us to drive and discipline, for, as weknow, there are no shortcuts to crossing that finishline. You must pay the price for a long enoughperiod of time, or cross that line, you won't.

The training phase is the backbone of this program and the direct reason forimproved happiness. Our social lives improve by joining a regular group togo on our weekly runs. We talk, listen and become the person we thought weused to behappy and interesting. All social stigmas disappear, as we allbecome runners seeking the same goal. We're no longer lawyers, doctors, teachers or housewives living according to some bogus pecking order societyhas created. We revolve our days around our training schedule, giving us
