Taconic Running Life MAY, 1991 R U N N I N ' O ' T H E G R E E N Our most popular race of tlie year was once again a big success. The Acr Lingus tickets which arc rafilcd off to a random finisher have a lot to do with the continuing popularity of the event. Among the names of the finishers can be seen the spouses, children and parents of the racing regulars. Some runners participate in both events to increase their odds of winning the coveted Acr lingus tickets. The day was especially festive since it actually WAS St. Patrick's Day. And no one complained about the mild spring weather. Moses Matscbula was king of the shamrocks, winning the lOK event in 34:18. Moses and continually-improving Tommy Neeson dueled through the entire race. At one point in the second loop, Matscbula - slightly in the lead - took a wrong turn. Nccson called him back and Matscbula eventually regained the lead with a 9-second victory over Neeson. in the women's race, Bmic Barnes of Chappaqua ran an impressive 41:18 to beat out Cheryl Johnson by four seconds. Emic has kept a surprisingly low profile for a woman who can turn in a 41-minute lOK on our tough EDR course. She docs most of her running in Chappaqua. Those Chappaqua hills may be the explanation for her running abilities. Mary Tolson also ran well, finishing third in 41:45. Many ainners turned in notable performances. John Holland finished 4th overall to take the masters race. Among women masters it was Helen Gordon in 42:49. Nancy laun (who seems to be racing less and enjoying it more) took second place with 43:30. Bob Rogan also turned in a fine time of 45:33 to take the 60+ category. I he race among the 50-59 men was very competitive with the first three fmishing within 16 seconds of each otlicr and all under 40 minutes. The victor in this catcgoiy was Frank Byrne, followed by Erwin KorlT and John Courts. Among the younger participants, Jim Rollnvcll, 16, turned in a very nice 38:11 and Sharon Trainor completed the course in 56:13. The two-mile "fun run" saw almost 200 participants. Tom Church was the first to finish this event, in 10:31. (We'll have to talk to Tom about his idea of "fun".) The prize of the day went to George Ray of Kalonah, 88th finisher of the fun run and winner of the Acr Lingus tickets to Ireland. Complete results start on page 17. Linda Geppcrt Moses Matscbula holds a slight lead over Tommy Nccson half way through the race.

MUDDERS AND GRUNTERSby Hagar

The dawn broke with ominous signs. The previousday's soaking rain put the course into excellent condition— lots of giop and slop to put each step into tenuousfooting at best. Yet it didn't seem to phase either AndyMofFatt or Alice Willis, both of whom set course recordsfor the 5th annual Mudders and Grunters, with times of28:25 and 35:59 respectively. But the looks on the facesof the other 60 finishers who traversed the briar patchesand hilly terrain covered in mud and scratches said theycouldn't wait until next year. The Hash House Harriersteam of Church, Herreid, young Neeson and MaxHeadroom took the coveted "Geronimo Cup^. Theevent is supposed to duplicate what the British call CrossCountry and the Scottish call Fell running — a type ofrunning very unfamiliar to Americans with theirmamcured courses. Besides course records being brokenin both the male and female divisions, many myths werealso broken: such as the myth that you will not find eliterunners such as sub-30-minute lOK ruimer AndyMofiatt of the Westchester Roadrunners Club or hisfemale counterpart Alice Willis running these courses --that they are too brittle, afraid of getting hurt etc. etc.Well, we can put that theory to rest. Another myth thatthese razees are reserved for the hardy, rugged male on amasochistic trip was laid to rest by 10-year-old RayKulkman and 70-year-old Russ UphofF. Both statedthat they were looking forward to next year's race. Forthose of you who think you might not like it or perhapsnot even survive it, try it — you just might like it. Seeyou next year.

"Low-Kcy-Race-o f - thc -Year " honors have beenawarded to the 1991 Boston Alternative races. Even withcollector T-shirts from the club T-shirt archives beinggiven away, there were only 28 finishers of the lOK event. The 2-milc fun run (no T-sliirt, no entry fee) drew 27participants.

Mike Gossct had an easy time of it, taking the lOKevent in 38:20. Richard Perykasz was second in 39:26 andSteve Moanzl took the third slot. Leo Gormley (42:24)was the first master to finish, followed closely by the firstmember of the half-century club, Brian Wheaton (42:33).

Jean Vaughn was first woman, at 43:53. Second placewent to Mary Dunnett, who ran the race as part of hertraining for the Pittsburgh Marathon.

In the 2-mile event, Tommy Neeson and Doug Millerdueled for first place, with Neeson edging out Miller by10 seconds. First woman to fmish was Samantha Levinc,3, who rolled through the course in 15:29. (Her dad, Siu,was pushing her stroller.) The first woman to finish onher feet was Nancy Young, running the loop in 15:50.

(It would have been simpler to list those finishers whodid not win awards, but that would have been tacky, sowe didn't.)

Weather-wise, there could hardly have been a better dayfor racing. After the race everyone enjoyed therefreshments while waiting for the results to be posted. They didn't have to wait long. Tliis race was the first testof Greg Diamond's new computerized scoring scheme.Runners were logged into the computer as they crossedthe finish line. Then a button was pushed, and PRESTO!complete, tabulated results. Greg has taken the headachesand backaches out of the scoring process.

M y s o u v e n i r c o f f e e m u g s a y s " B o s t o n — t h e e n d o f t h e r a i n b o w. " T h e B o s t o nMarathon is , indeed, an ideal that many runners aspi re to, perhaps becauseit's the oldest continually running marathon, perhaps because of the need to<3ualify. I remember myself, as a brand new runner fourteen years ago,(trying to increase my mileage from 1 1/2 to 2 miles every other day) ,watching a movie in which Joanne Woodward ran the Boston Marathon, and I wasd e t e r m i n e d t o d o t h a t s o m e d a y , i m p o s s i b l e a s i t s e e m e d a t t h e t i m e . T h i sy e a r , t h e d r e a m w a s r e a l i z e d b y fi r s t - t i m e B o s t o n r u n n e r s H o w i e S o l o w a n dR u d y E i n h o r n .

The uno ffic i a l "TRRC ca rbo - l oad ing " pa r t y was he ld a t F l o rence ' s , a sma l lI ta l ian restaurant in the North End, selected by Dan Moffat t . Race daymorning found us in ideal weather conditions for runners: cloudy, sl ightlywindy and in the mid 40s. The cheering and photography squad deservess p e c i a l m e n t i o n f o r b r a v i n g t h e c o l d a n d t h e i n t r i c a c i e s o f t h e B o s t o nTransit System: Norma, Justin and Mark Einhorn, Sue Solow, Chris Malkames,a n d H a n k B u c h a n a n .

A warn ing: take i t f rom a veteran New York Marathoner, the s tar t in Bostonis nothing less than awful. It took me close to 14 minutes to get to the onemile mark, and then lots of zigging and zagging for the next several miles,l o s i n g p r e c i o u s t i m e a n d e n e r g y i n t h e p r o c e s s . T h e c r o w d s w e r ee n t h u s i a s t i c , t h o u g h n o t n e a r l y a s p l e n t i f u l a s i n N e w Yo r k . T h e w o r s tnightmare, however, was the baggage claim. It started to rain about 3 1/2hours into the race, and, as you can imagine, the last thing you want to doafter running a marathon is stand in the rain in 45 degree weather for a halfhour waiting for your baggage. But that's what happened and there were manycomplaints and comparisons to the New York Marathon, which, with three timesa s m a n y r u n n e r s , i s m u c h m o r e w e l l o r g a n i z e d .

Three TRRC members distinguished themselves by finishing under three hours:Neil Wheaton, 2:29; Gary Struve, 2:50; Bob Hermesch, 2:58. Specialrecognition goes to Neil, who finished 72nd overall. They were followed byMike Daley, 3:03; Dan Moffatt, 3:15; Melanie Benvenue, 3:35; Howie Solow,3 : 4 7 , R u d y E i n h o r n , 3 : 5 3 .

Later that evening, as we feasted on wine and lobster at Jimmy's Harborside,Howie Solow had the most interesting "war story" of the day. He lost hisfinishers medal, stood in the rain for an hour asking for a medal, somehowpersuading a volunteer to pick up his baggage. He ended up in the medicalt e n t , a s r i g o r m o r t i s d o e s s t a r t t o s e t i n w h e n s t a n d i n g a r o u n d i n t h o s econditions after running. After being told that they'd "run out" of medals,Howie's medal was found in the frozen yogurt where he'd dropped it! (Youcan't make this stuff up, folks!) In fact, this could be the plot of WoodyA l l e n ' s n e x t m o v i e ! !

Tuesday morning it was "back to reality". will we be back next year? Thejury is still out on that one. I can say, though, in retrospect — despites o m e o f t h e b a d e x p e r i e n c e s — l i k e . a n u n r u l y c h i l d , t h e B o s t o n M a r a t h o n h a sa w a y o f w i n n i n g y o u r h e a r t .
