    Facta non verba

Plans are in the works for the first annual (almost 20anniversary) "Facta Non-Verba-Distance Tres Exacta" marathon be held on December 8 in conjunction with the Taconic Great LoWeek-end. The event will be low key-essentially an extension of oweekly "pump house" runs, with the added wrinkle that we plan certify the course, thus making it usefiil as a Boston qualifier. Thmarathon will start at Baldwin Place (at TRRC World HeadquarteP.O. Box 99) proceed down the recently opened bike path to Yorktowout to Route 118, South to Route 134, then, after a turn or two, Croton Dam Road to Croton Dam to Route 129 to Croton Avenue Maple to Montrose Station Road to Washington Street to BluMountain Park. The field for this inaugural event will be limited, sincthe race director also plans on running in it.

The Mother's Day race and walk brought out a good crowThe weather was not as inviting as past Mother's Days, but thvolunteers and participants warmed things up. It was a great eveA few comments on North County News: the change in thcourse came as a surprise-probably too much of a surprise. Let's hosuch changes will be made known prior to race day. The reversalthe course proved to be considerably more difficult than most wouhave thought. Compliments to Doug Miller for trying to stimulate neinterest in an old event, it's always difficult to pull all the piece

together, and he managed to do that and also come up with outstanding T-shirt. (He got help for Karen on the shirt, obviouslyThe Lincoln Hall 5-Miler produced excellent performanc

by the Taconic men's team. Dave Mitzi came from behind to win ovcourse record holder, Odis Sanders. Rich and Joanna Nash put a of time and effort into the organization of this race, and it showedwas great to be able to host a NYRRC club points race, and to welcomrunners from the Central Park Track Club, the New York FlyeWithold's Runners, New York Harriers and Millrose AA. Howevin the end, we proved to be poor hosts in that Taconic's Open, Masteand Veterans teams outscored them all A good time was had by and we cordially invite all club runners to join us.Mark your calendar - SUNDAY, JULY 21 - Central Par

CLUB TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP. All Taconic Road Runners shocome to run 5 miles, wear the team colors,, then come to the post-rapicnic. If you need an application, call Lee or me at 666-8712.- E dA Note From The Vice President:

After a recent Saturday morning pumphouse run, many ofreceived flyers alerting us to the proposed construction of a watreatment facility on the Croton Reservoir near the pumphouse. Tproposed 50 acre facility may take years to build and would probaclose a significant amount of the existing "pumphouse run" courWatch the local papers to stay abreast of developments, and let yopinions be known. -S teveP.S. The water treated in this plant would not be for use in YorktowIt would serve New York City and possibly Yonkers.

Mother Nature Poses Challenge at Mother's Day 5KBy Lee Saroken & Nancy YoungAfter a hot and steamy Saturday, Mother's Day brought us cold and windy conditions for the annual women only 5K run and 2mile walk at FDR Park. The finish line proved no match for Mother Nature (she didn't race) as it became the first and only casualty of tday when the clock was blown off its stand and the banner bent shortly after our crack finish line crew completed their set-up. Everresourceful, a volunteer was enlisted to yell out finishing times as the competitors crossed the line.Tara Maguire crossed the bandaged and bruised finish line first, over a minute ahead of second place finisher ChristineGarger. Tara continues her strong running, as she was the only competitor to break the 20 minute mark. Christine's second place finisalong with a strong performance from her mother Roni (who won her age group) enabled them to win the mother-daughter teamcompetition. 1995 Runner of the Year Debra Kenney rounded out the top three with her usual strong performance.

Despite Mother Nature's worst performance in recent Mother's Day history, a large number of runners were joined by a verywelcome contingent of walkers. Due to the growing interest in the walking segment of this event, we are planning to provide officialfinishing times for all walkers in 1997. In addition. Mother Nature will be invited to officially participate next year and will be assignedprestigious elite number "I" in order to avoid any of the problems she presented this year.

Hooray for the volunteers and runners that helped make this year's Mother's Day race so successful. A very special thanks toKevin Lenahan for the T-shirt design. Also, special thanks to our raffle prize donators: Court Sports, Club Fit, the Premier Club, TRamada Inn, Rattlesnakes, Denise Borgeest, Pasta Plus and last, but definitely not least, the Daily Bagel and Dan Moffitt, who givus constant support.

San Francisco On The RunBy Brad Leach(Editor's note: I have had the pleasure of hearing about some beautiful running throughout the country in conversations with Bradwhile running some "pump-house runs His job frequently takes him to distant spots, where he laces up his shoes and hits the roads. Iam pleased that he has taken me up on my invitation to put together some runner's travel-log notes. I hope you enjoy them and I inviteyou to share your experiences.)

Running opportunities in San Francisco reflect the diversity which characterizes this vibrant city. As a runner, my favoritelocation is the financial district, due to the easy access to the waterfront which provides some of the best running routes in this vehiclechoked city. The Hyatt Regency at the Embarcadero Center is a good hotel choice in this part of San Francisco. Every Wednesday at 6:0p.m. runners meet at the hotel for a group run.On this morning, I started my run from the Hyatt which is 10 minutes from the waterfront. The Embarcadero (Spanish for wharis a boulevard that provides access to the waterfront area of San Francisco and draws many runners in the morning. I turned left at theEmbarcadero and ran on the sidewalk toward Fisherman's Wharf which is the first destination at 1.5 miles. I strongly suggest a brief stoat Pier 39 to see the sea lions. Some years ago, the local sea lion population decided that the boat docks provided a desirable gatheringspot. The city's guiding view of tolerance enabled the sea lions to adopt this spot on a permanent basis. This morning there wereapproximately 250 sunning and barking on the docks. The Sea Lion alpha is easy to identify since he commands his own dock. From herI ran through to the end of the wharf area and continued by along the bay to Fort Mason Center at 2.5 miles. This route is generally flat, contrast to the hilly terrain of the city. When the morning meeting began to materialize with the lifting of the fog, I regretfully turned bacfor the return.

The Nob Hill area is another location in the city that I recommend for runners. Nob Hill is at the top of San Franciscoand provides more vigorous routes given the hilly nature of this area. With hills that range from moderate to extreme, there multiplerunning options. Nob Hill is primarily residential and as such does not have the high density vehicle traffic which characterizes other paof the city. The Mark Hopkins and the Fairmont are my hotel recommendations. The Fairmont has the best health club of the Nob Hillhotels. If you find yourself in Nob Hill area and would like to run the Embarcadero. You can follow California Street down to theEmbarcadero Center. Just be prepared for the Illintgon-like return up California Street.

    Happy trails, travelers

A Report on the Lincoln Hall 5 MllerBy Joanna NashThe stage was set for Lincoln Hall to be bigger andbetter than ever. Our Taconic members came out in droves tohelp at this race. The Lincoln Hall staff,in particular AstonGill, Tom Kiernan and Kate O'Kula, were incrediblysupportive of this year's event. A re-match of last year's racebetween Odis Sanders and David Mitzi was in the works, with the added bonus of this race being a NYRRC scoringevent. (The first time NYRRC has allowed a scoring event outof the five Burroughs ) Rich and I had been working on thisyear's event since October of last year, and were holding ourbreath until race day.Race day came, and with everyone's help, the racewent off like a well-oiled Taconic Road Runner's machine. TheI9th Annual Lincoln Hall race was under way. Our winnerfrom last year, Odis Sanders, had high hopes for a repeatvictory, but David Mitzi, with his quiet style, was waiting inthe wings. Taconic's own Chuck Creel (next year is youryear), Doug Miller, Steve Calidonna, Mauricio Venegas,Scott Mosenthal, Alonso Rcndon and Tom Piazza wereamong the other notables that ran and could have won, had thefirst two places faltered. Last year's winner from the women'sside, Alessandra Lynch, was injured and could not defend hertitl. This opened the door for Tara McGuire to step in with astron performance to take the women's title for this year (andon her home turfto boot ). Newcomer Emmy Stocker, NancyVenegas, consistent Kathleen Kane, Sarah Collins, Patricia

Lessons Learned From An Active LifestyleThe foowng s excerpted from a coumn by Chp East pubshed n the Fa. 1995 The Actve Voce, a newsetter of The AmercanAssociation for Active Lifestyles and Fitness. 1900 Association Drive. Reston, VA 22091.

According to Chip East, AAALF President, living anactive lifestyle is more than simply being active. It is more a stateof being and doing. East says "People who live an active lifestylelearn important lessons from their communion with nature, withothers, and with themselves. These are the lessons of conservancy, persistence, and tolerance. Conservancy has both an internal andexternal focus. Internal conservancy means a caring for thephysical self through diet, exercise, and life style management.People who live an active lifestyle are focused on maximizing theirquality (and probably quantity) of life by conserving their physicalbeing. External conservancy means a caring for the environment."The lesson of persistence is learned through the trials ofphysical activity. As you embark upon an active lifestyle, youbeing to leam about your physiological and psychological limits. As you move from trial to trial, in "victory" and "defeat", you leamthat most limits are self imposed, and that through persistence youcan achieve goals you thought unachievable."Consider this quotation attributed to President CalvinCoolidge:

"Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence.Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessfumen with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almosa proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educatedderelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan "Press On" has solved and always will solve theproblems of the human race."East further observes: "The lesson of tolerance is a lessonhard learned. Those who subscribe to active lifestyles grow into atolerance for nature, for others, and for themselves. Two benefitsof a tolerant attitude are lower levels of personal stress and theability to build coalitions to accomplish tasks."An active lifestyle involves a commitment to a quality wayof life. Although the road is challenging, the benefits are great. Ifyou are one who lives this type of active lifestyle and would like toassociate with others who do, we hope you are a member ofTaconic Road Runners Club. Let ters to the Edi tor

    5 / 1 9 / 9 6To the Editors of Taconic Running Life:Dear Sirs/Madams:

I write in vehement protest to the "wussification" ofthe North County News lOK and the gutless acts of the racedirector in turning the course backwards so as to avoidrunning up the infamous Grunt Hill.

Some found the reverse direction of the course to bemore difficult, and I can't argue with the law of physicswhich states "what goes up must come down."

Further, I admit that the long gradual incline upMoseman Avenue was a new challenge. However, I myselfset a PR for the race and found tlie backwards route to bemuch easier.

Nothing was more challenging than the traditionalvertical incline of Grunt Hill. Running down it just wasn'tthe same.I admire the stalwart defiance of Harry "MacTavish" Neeson, who, with the courage of a salmon swimming upstream, ran the race in its proper course. Neeson'sdefiance was reminiscent of Mel Gibson in Braveheart and Ihear he cried "Freedom " when he reached the top of GruntH i l l .

I appeal Neeson's disqualification from the race.Next year, let us all follow the lead of Neeson's

charge into battle and attack Grunt Hill head on.Let us restore the tradition of the North CountyN e w s l O K

    Very truly yours,John W. Albanese

Editor's note: Mr. Albanese enclosed a note to me statingthat "this letter is meant to be in good fun." We welcomeletters that express the opinions of our members. Articlesand letters printed in this newsletter represent the opinionsand observations of their authors and are not necessarilythose of the editor or of the TRRC Board of Directors.

"Animals are such agreeable friends -they ask no questionsthey pass no criticisms,"

    -George Eliot

A note from Charlie Sprauer:Well, another Sybil is over, and once again, I'd like tothank the volimteers who give so much of their time, because thecourse is so long. For the third year in a row I have failed to finish,

either because of recurring injuries or just not being trained. I willnot run this race next year if I'm not in shape, because it's not fair tothe volunteers to show up unprepared.

The 5 other people from the MHRR club did well enough twin trophies, and Bob Sweeney won for the third time in a row. Thecap with his name on it for the "hat trick" was a nice gesture. By theway. Bob and his wife are moving to France, and they will bemis s e d .

It was also good to see 5 women in the race. You can nevehave enough women. On another subject, I read Ed McLaughlin's coliunn and se

you're having the same problem with getting volunteers from theranks of those who never help out but race a lot. After 4 years ofdirecting the Dutchess County Classic and helping out with almostevery race in between, I eventually got so tired of catering to theseelites that I've just given up and not rejoined the club. It went froma lot of good running times and get-togethers to nothing but thethought of work. In retrospect, we began running to ease stress, getin better physical shape, etc., but when it simply is not fun anymoreit's time to pack it in. I've seen the same old faces still bearing theload up here for almost twenty years now. Eventually, they'll have tpick up the volunteers at the nursing homes.I seriously believe that the Mid-Hudson Road Runnersshould just disband and become some kind of a hash-house runninggroup or something. I guess I'm just disappointed and burned out.Scott Abercrombie picked me up on the road when I quitrunning Sybil and we talked for a while about the volimteer situation, and apparently it's the same all over. He mentioned that hedirects a kids' race, and perhaps running clubs should focus moreattention on this aspect of racing, to hopefully bring in some youngblood in the future.

Westchester Wants Bagg SackedBy Jim Bagg, Masters Director of Public RelationsIt has come to my attention that a number of WestchesterTrack Club members are upset with a column that was published inthe last edition of Taconic Running Life where I intimated that theyrecruited runners from delicatessens. I would like to personallyapologize to my down-county brethren as I did not intend to malignanyone. I guess after reading many of my columns, they don'tunderstand that most of my writing is "tongue-in-cheek" (either thaor I must have been right on the mark.)In order to foster friendship between the clubs, I feel it isnecessary to tender my resignation as the Taconic Masters Directorof Publicity and forego the $500,000 annual salary (I guess theybelieve that, too.) that goes with it. I feel that if I continue in mycurrent position, Westchester runners will boycott Taconic races, causing considerable financial harm to our club, or worse yet, theymay try to persuade some of our better runners to join their club.I suggest someone politically correct, without wit or a senseof humor, follow the exploits of the Masters team without financialremuneration. Perhaps this person could also be a member of bothclubs to appease all and simply submit articles that contain therecorded times of the runners without comment.

laconic Road Runners Club On The Threshold Of AdulthoodBy Larry LenahanSeveral times during the last couple of years I have beenasked, "How old is the Club?" Presumably, the question has beenasked of me because members think of me as one of the foundingmembers. Sadly, I am not. It would be a great honor to be one,but that honor is carried by the Club's first president, and the truefounder, Dan Caffrey A number of other members such as HowieBashant, Pete Corsino, Phil Merritt and Owen McCrudden areamong the group of founders. I have a feeling Joe Albanese,Harry Neeson, David Farquhar, Don Villeneuve and CarmeloRoldan also qualify as founders. There are others that I look uponas founders, but who many of you may not know: Dan Kehoe,Dave Walsh, Judy Pickert, Joe Sanchez, Connie Licke, TerryHorton, Steve and Jeannie Amet, Bob Bergen, Mike and BarbaraRogers and Bill McCaffrey. Many of them have been superbcompetitive runners. Others, are long term middle of the packers, but dedicated runners no less. I mention these runners becauseeach contributed greatly in his or her own way, helping the Clubthrough its formative years, pre-incorporation that is. I'd like totell you the exact date the Club came into existence, but I can't.Maybe one these could, however I can share with you some of itshistory since it filed for incorporation on April 20, 1978 - 18years ago.I first became aware of the Club's existence in Januaryor February of that year when I met Dan Caffrey and othermembers of the Club at Sycamore Park, the site of our annual biathlon (soon to celebrate its 19th anniversary). Why the Club wasthere, I can't remember. But in tune with the times, it wasperforming a community service ~ probably putting on a low keyroad race. Shortly after meeting Dan, I joined the Club. Therewere a number of reasons for my doing so, the most important wasthe camaraderie that existed among the membership ~ acommunity of runners. I didn't realize it at the time, but many ofthem were star runners in their own right. When you met them, you didn't know this, because Taconic was not a competitive club.It had a mission:"To conduct classes, clinics and furnishinstructional services in the sport of track andrunning. To do all things incidental to maintainingand sustaining the interest of its members in athleticcompetition, in particular running, with the intentof fostering the health, athletic and physicalconditioning and social good fellowship of itsmembers,"

The preceding is a direct quote from the Club'scertificate of incorporation. It is important to reflect on thisstatement because it encompasses what the Club means to me. Itis a Club for runners of both sexes, all ages, and all abilities. Imake this point because it easy for the dedicated ten percent toforget the interests of the other ninety percent.

Before going any further, I want make it clear I am notcriticizing any member or group of members of the Club in whatfollows. I am simply asking each of you to think of the other 500or so members of the Club and what brought you to Join Taconic. From what I learned over the years, Taconic came intoexistence as an alternative to New York, not as a competitor or asan affiliate, simply as an alternative. The founders saw anopportunity to bring running to the community ~ NorthernWestchester and Putnam Counties. It was believed, as has beenevidenced over the last eighteen plus years that there is anaudience here in the lower Hudson region, and the Club has servedit well. Taconic has probably put on more races than any club ofits size ~ some for one year: a half marathon, a triathlon and ayou postal mile;-other races for many year: Sybil, the fourth of July,Lincoln Hall, North County News and the biathlon to name someof the oldest.

Some of these have attracted the interest of renownedrunners, such as Jim Fixx, Dr. George Sheehan and Nina Kusik, not necessarily for the competition. The oldest races have aheritage. They are courses where long standing records have beenset which serve as goals for the competitive runner. Most of thesecourses have remained unchanged for years, thus serving asbenchmarks against which all runners the elite, the middle andend of the pack runners can measure their performance from yearto year. Also, their dates and times are fixed in the minds of longterm runners. I ask all race directors and officers to consider thatour races are for all runners, our members included. In times where so many things are changing, it would becomforting to think that some of the things that we enjoy remainunchanged. Rarely will you see other clubs changing their racesto fit the needs of non-members or other clubs. Do you believeNew York or Boston would change their races to please Taconic? We should co-operate with other clubs whenever possible, but notat a cost to our members.

The Club should not frown on members who choose torun elsewhere on the same day it is putting on a race. We all haveour favorite races, or want to run in a race we've never been ableto run in, maybe nearby or far away. We should be able run themwithout criticism. By the same token, sometimes we find those"great races" aren't so great and we end up with an increasedappreciation for Taconic's races. Other times we learn things, which if adopted, could help the Club. Running everywhere is partof our tradition. However, as a member of the Club, we also havean obligation to support our races, either by running in them orhelping out. You can help out and run before or after the race. Also, if you've never helped out, try it a couple of times, and dodifferent jobs go out on a limb. It gives you a whole newperspective on running. Incidentally, being an officer, especiallythe President or Treasurer, isn't the easiest the job around, nor isbeing the editor of Taconic Running Life, but by co-operatingwith these Taconic's we all make the Club stronger. laconic On Threshold (cont.)laconic is a great Club. Can it be better? Sure. But thebigger question is: What is better? Rather than criticize, participate. Share the vision. Think back: Why did you join theClub? What has changed for the better or the worse? Listen toother runners and members elite and non-elite. Should we havemore races or fewer ones? Bigger or smaller? Should weconcentrate more on competitive racing, fun runs, low key (lowentry fee, no-premium no T-shirt) races, or hold runningseminars? Should the Board establish a budget and allocate afixed amount per race or event? There are no right or wronganswers. Adults make choices every day. Few are made in a

vacuum, and there are always consequences. But by havingreached adulthood, they've learned a lot.Over the last eighteen years, the Club has experienced alot, and I believe, learned a lot. Taconic can only benefit from it.Look closely at the Club's logo, draw your own conclusions as towhat it stands for. I think it personifies the essence of the spiritthat first gave the club life. It's about having fun running (racing, jogging and shuffling) with friends on an open country road ortrail. It's an inclusive club, not an exclusive one. Let's continueto pool our experiences and share our visions for the benefit of allTaconic Road Runners.

19th Annual North County News 10KBy Doug MillerAs I look back at the 19th annual running of the NorthCounty News 1 OK and Fun Run, I can now recall the satisfactionand frustration of being a race director. It seems ironic that aftermonths of preparation, the race only lasts about one hour

Again, I had the privilege of doing the pace carresponsibilities and got the first hand view of the leadersthroughout the race. From about a half mile out, a trio separated themselvesfrom the other 112 runners. Last year's defending champ, ChuckCreel, fresh off a sparkling 2:38 London Marathon and lookingstronger than I have ever seen him, pounded through the rollingfirst mile. Along with Chuck was last year's third place finisher,Alonzo Rendon, 24, the youngest in the top 10, and anotherrunner who has made quite a name for running a fast marathonrecently. The third of the trio is a guy who is more noted for hisfeats on the 400 oval than in lOK's: Armando Ollviera, 28.There was no questioning his speed (4:01 - 1500M), butldid notsee him as a factor in the latter stages, especially against seasoneddistance road warriors like Chuck and Alonzo. The three-some looked awesome coming off McKeel andon the grinding hill on Wood Street through mile 3. Although Isurprised many people by reversing the course and taking out theinfamous Grunt Hill as the "tactical hill: it was now made to testwho would demand the most of themselves. For 0.8 of a mile up,Moseman's Monster, once again a major hill was the "pinnacle,"the point where the race was decided. (Sorry folks, couldn't avoidit ) Bodies cave in and spirits are broken at North County NewslOK, once more.

    : l u b

Harry Neeson (#106 - that looks like 901) demonstrated hisopinion of the course change. It was hard to tell what wasreversed: the course, Harry, his shirt, or all of the above.

To my surprise, it was the trackster who offered thestrongest display of uphill running, as Oliviera began to pull awayfrom a more cautious Creel and the faltering Rendon. At the top,it was all Oliviera, as almost 20 seconds separated them from theonset of the hill. As for who won the race, it was decided onMoseman on mile 4, as Oliviera ran it alone with just me in thetruck to pace from. Creel, too, was running in solitude, as Rendonpulled up badly on the hill. This allowed a battle for third betweenRendon and Manoel Leal, 39, who came from nowhere in thesecond half to edge Rendon. Leal posted a fine time of 36:14 whenit suddenly got very humid late in the race. Oliviera's time of34:41 was the first sub 35 since the 34:30 on the original course in'92 run by Moses Matsabulas. Creel's 35:12 is his fastest NorthCounty News lOK race time and he has now run the 3rd and 8thfastest times since '93 when I became director. On an ending note, the course will revert to its originaldirection for its 20th anniversary. The consensus was pretty muchsplit as to which was more difficult, but no one complained. . .noone except a certain feisty little Scotsman that stands about myshoulder height. He made his point clear by running in the originaldirection. Ah, yes I like his flair for controversy.

Also, many thanks for the help of so many volunteers, without whom I could not have concentrated my efforts elsewhere. It is comforting to know that I could leave the start in the verycapable hands of the volunteers while I drove the pace car. Theoutpouring of help really made the race a success.

N A P A A u t o C a r e C e n t e rT i m e F o rlaconic Masters To Put UpBy Jim Bagg, Director of Masters Public RelationsIn my musings, I have often espoused that thestrength of the laconic Masters team has been their tremendous depth- Team Captain Scott Abercrombie never has aproblem getting three runners to travel to the far comers of thefive boroughs. On their return, they are canying hardware thattheir urban counterpajts no doubt had already planned toconsign to the local pawn shop,The time has now come for this group to show themetropolitan area just how strong they are. I am suggestingtliat TRRC-M field two teams in tlie prestigious 8 man Ocean-lo-Sound Relay scheduled for Saturday, September 8. Considering last years' results, it's a good possibility these teams willgamer a first and a third. Off the top of my had, there are 16forty year olds who have run with TRRC-M, and 1 am sure Iforgot somebody. Of course, this assumes the Veterans(fifties) field tlieir own team. If they do not, that just makesthese teams that much toughter. Here are the 16;Steve Cal idonnaGary SteinelJoe PorcaroVic Po l i tanoPaul FendlerPete CorsinoEd McLaughlinJeff Purdy
