RUNNING MASTERS, WHERE ARE YOU?by Anthony Galfano

On February 11, some of the over-40-year-olds got together to runand to talk about some future plans for a masters running program. There is nothing formalized or organized at this time (is there ever?),only the desire to see if we can get enough masters together to looktowards more team events. This is an open invitation to all and\)) runners over forty.

In order to have a successful team we need the participation of asmany runners as possible. There are no qualifications, except age 40 +.Howie Bashant and I are trying to organize the 40-49 age group. Theparticipation of the 50-, 60- and 70- age groups is also encouraged. We are looking for members to step up and plan teams for these agegroups. As our next competitive team effort, Howie and I plan to puttogether a masters' team for the Scarsdale 15K on April 1.

Some members out there might be thinking that this is only for themore competitive members of the club, 1 think we can come up witha program that will benefit all those who want to participate, no matter what level they are at. We are looking for the participation of allthose who want to run in some team events.

The next informal run/meeting is scheduled for Sunday, March 11,at the St. Patrick's Day Race. If you can not make this meeting callHowie (621-2482) or myself (737-6435) to fmd out more about upcoming events.

My motto for this masters' running program is: You've got to beold to be in it.

WELCOME!! TRRC IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THEF O L L O W I N G N E W M E M B E R S :

T A C O N I C M A I L B A G

To Whom It May Concern:I enclose my delinquent membership dues and trust I

may be "delisted" from the Red Dot Club. My longdistance enjoyment of the club's activities has been enhanced by the newsletter as well as by the club's growingmembership and ever-increased support of local races.

My wife and I are relocating back to New York State(the Albany area) this summer and I look forward toparticipating in TRRC races later this year. In perusingthe results of races, I notice the absence of many of myold cohorts, and the emergence of new blood to t e theirplaces. Please tell Marc Oxman, though, that his recenttimes are inexcusable, and that he must shape himself upin the next few months. Tliere wUI be NO MERCY inour first reappearance!

Sincerely,J o h n A n s e l l

To Ed McLaughlin, Treasurer TRRC

D e a r E d :I'm happy to say that Glenna and I are in a position

to make a contribution to TRRC this year. The club hasbeen a source of good running tips (believe it or not!) anda source of fun at the post-race events and parties. Thebus ride to the NYC Marathon was a good source ofencouragement for the race.

We hope that you can earmark our donation for theJan Peek lOK in July - a race which has become a favorite event for our whole family.

All the best for 1990.Ed and Glenna McNally

The race proceeded south to the lower end cf Central Park and then up theeast side to approximately 92nd street, where we turned around to run theremaining 2 1/2 miles. Lo and behold, at the half-way mark, there was a"champagne stop." Howie Solow and Pete Corsino and I, running together, stopped for a few, waited for Tilia and Roy to catch up with us. Who do wemeet (againl) having champagne, but none other than Ron Herreid, with hisfel low hasher, our own Tom Church, " taking a break" f rom another party. Ronran to the end of the race with us, making certain not to miss a singlepuddle. A woman running next to me was heard to remark, "He MUST be ahasher i " I t was amazing that even in the ra in, on New Year 's Eve, spectatorswere plentiful and enthusiastic. The police officers replied "Happy NewYear!" in response to our shouts ( I think I even heard one of the horsesrespond 1) As for our finishing t imes, suffice it to say that as Til ia, Roy,Pete, Howie and I crossed the finish line, Kurt Steiner was bellowing, "Youhave five m inu tes t o b reak an hou r ! " HMMM- guess t ha t champagne s top wasl o n g e r t h a n w e r e m e m b e r e d .

Back at Tavern on the Green, we regrouped and ran back to the apartment, soaking wet and cold. We made a quick change of clothes, then made thejourney back to Somers, where we arrived about 3 a.m., and were joined aboutan hour later by Susan Solow. At Melanie's house, the crew, which nowconsisted of Pete and Alice, Susan and Howie, Til ia and Roy, consumedeggplant parmigiana, pasta salad, cheese and crackers, and plenty ofchampagne. Needless to say, the party lasted until noon the next day (with as h o r t s l e e p b r e a k ) .

It was an unforgettable New Year's Eve. a very uplifting way to celebrate thearrival of a new decade. We're already making plans for next New Year's Eve- a sui te (or two) at the Mayflower Ho.tel is a definite, as is (we hope) moreTaconic people, more food, more champagne HAF'PY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE!!!^!

A new multi-use recreational trail is being developed, and we need your help to make it a reality. The Townof Yorktown Conservation Board needs volunteers to aidin the clean-up and restoration of the Putnam LineRailroad Right-of Way (ROW). The completed projectencompasses a corridor of approximately five mfies. Itwill run north from the north side of the Croton Reservoir to Underbill Avenue, along the east side of route118. After a short break, it picks up again across 118 fromDowning Drive (opposite the A&P) and continues up toFDR Park .

The trail will be a natural compacted surface. It willbe a multi-use recreational area: running, walking, biking, but excluding motorized vehicles. It wUl be accessible tothe handicapped and open to anyone. The trail will comeunder the management and maintenance of the Town ofYorktown's Department of Parks and Recreation.

Eventually we hope to cross the reservoir and link upwith Westchester County's North County Trail along thesame ROW in the vicinity of the new county park atKitchawan. The county is committed to extending itstrail up tp Kitchawan. It currently runs 7.4 miles fromEastview to Mi l lwood.

We need your help NOW in cleaning up the ROW inpreparation for the heavier equipment work to follow. We do not have the funds to contract out the work necessary to restore the ROW and consequently it will take

a concerted effort by volunteers in this community tosupply the drive to bring this project to reality. We areaskmg for a little sweat equity to improve our community.

Note from Editor: David Enos spoke to us at the club'sFebruary meeting. A lot of us are interested in getting aconcerted club effort together, perhaps designating a dayto work on the trail. To get in on the action, let your interest be known to John Hallinan, Tony Galfano orBrian Wheaton. Better yet, come to the next meeting!

R E F L E C T I O N S O F A G L A D I A T O Rby Deborah Yagoda

ITiere are times when we'd rather not go out the doorto run. We push ourselves, bargain with ourselves, promise ourselves cheeseburgers if only we'll take care ofthat one thing, the run. We like our day off, right? Thecouch-potato mode is more comfortable than the athletemode, right? So why does everything get reversed whenwe get hurt? What happens in the mind of an injuredathlete to turn an opportunity for rest and relaxation intoa prison sentence? Why docs the dreaded workout become the object of utmost desire? The impulse to continue " the Gladiator — consistently defeats commonsense. Despite the knowledge that working out hurt canhurt you worse. The Gladiator says, 'I know you're right, but I MUST! I'll lose conditioning. I'll get fat. I'll bealone." Brave and strong as the Gladiator is, he's afraid.

So here we go, a band of healthy and hot-so-healthycomrades in sneakers, looping our park, giving advice andnot taking it, spending less time with our fallen friends, perfectly proving the truth of our fears, perpetuating thisview of ourselves as empty vessels without our characterizing activity.

Take heart, you of the down-time. Though our bondshere form and re-form, dictated by our ever-shifting selfish needs, we'll be here when you get back. And you willbe back; the Gladiator has confidence in you.
