Наука про віру

І. Що таке віра

Переживаємо час, коли багато говориться й дебатується про віру, коли відкрито ставляться питання, чи то треба вірувати, чи ні. Такі питання часто підіймаються серед нашої української інтелігенції, а особливо серед української молоді. Через усе це я й хочу виложити своє слово про віру. “Віра – то виконання сподіваного, переконаність у небаченому” (Євр. 11: 1). Віра робить ніби виконаним те, чого ми тільки чекаємо, це повне переконання про речі невидимі. Віра в широкому релігійному значенні – це глибоке й повне наше переконання в існування Бога, а разом з тим – повне признання Його істоти та Його дій. Ця віра в Бога мусить нас охопити цілком, щоб ми міцно зрослися з нею, щоб вона стала нашою істотою. Щоб усе ми робили у вірі в Бога, щоб ми зовсім злилися з Богом і пам’ятали про Нього щохвилини. Віра – це повсякчасне направлення нашого зору, чуття й нашої думки на Бога. Кожного дня й кожного часу все робимо тільки з Богом, тільки в ім’я Його. Кожне своє діло контролюємо й перевіряємо за веліннями Божими. Заповіді Божі завжди маємо в цілій своїй істоті. Завжди пам’ятаємо, що Бог усе бачить, усе знає, усе чує. Віра зростається з людиною в одне неподільне ціле, охоплює її всю. Віра не потребує доказів, бо сприймає все душею і серцем, і цим схиляє й розум до того ж.

II. Віра в Бога

Найперша наша віра – це віра в Бога, а віра в Бога вимагає всією своєю істотою визнавати, що Бог – то наш Господь, що ми вповні залежимо від Нього. Тому

ми цілком Йому підлягаємо. Одному Йому віддаємо себе всього, Йому Одному найбільше служимо найрізнішими способами. І визнаємо все це без доказів, бо докази вносять сумнів у віру. А де сумнів, там нема віри. Віра в Бога вимагає цілком вірити у всемогутність Божу, цебто, що Йому Одному все підлягає, Він Один може зробити все. Бог – Вседержитель. Бог нами керує, Бог нас руководить, Бог же керує й усім світом. Тому ми без Бога ніколи нічого не робимо, а що робимо – робимо в Його ім’я. Бог найбільше й найповніше відкривається нам у Святому Письмі, а тому віра в Бога вимагає від нас цілком вірити й у Його Святе Письмо. Воно власне ясно показує нам Бога, воно ж навчає нас правильно й належно вірити в Нього. Воно ж навчає, як треба жити на землі в Бозі. У Новому Заповіті Бог повно відкрився нам у Сині Своїм, що приходив на землю для відкуплення людей. Про все це свідчить нам головно Євангелія. Уci Божі якості ми пізнали й пізнаємо через Особу Сина. Ось тому вірити в Бога – це вірити й у Ісуса, Сина Його. Звичайно, віра в Бога й віра в Сина Його – це одна віра, і хто вірить у Бога, той вірить і в Сина Його, бо Бог і Син Його – то одне. Віра в Сина Божого конечна для нашого спасіння, “бо коли не ввіруєте, що то Я, то помрете у своїх гріхах” (Івана 8: 24). Віра в Бога вимагає віри й пошани до Його вічної установи на землі, цебто до Його Церкви. Ми зобов’язані виконувати відносно неї все, чого нас навчає Святе Письмо та Передання, ми зобов’язані завжди слухатись її, обов’язані сприймати її науки, як необхідні для нас. Церква через Святе Письмо і Передання найповніше береже науку про Бога й наше спасіння. Віра в Церкву вимагає від нас і сприймати Передання, як доповнення до Святого Письма. Через Передання Церква незмінна й вічна.

III. Без віри нема життя

Дехто з людей не хочуть приймати віри в Бога, бо кажуть, що вони хочуть усе довести на ділі, а на саму віру нічого не сприймають. Це зовсім неправдива відмова, бо у своєму повсякденному буденному житті ми дуже багато таки сприймаємо на саму віру. Віра – це признання чогось без доказів і в цьому власне істота її. Коли глибше приглянемось, то переконаємось, що ми повсякденно живемо власне самою вірою, бо більшість нашого життєвого знання заснована таки на самій вірі. І справді, віра в житті потрібна нам на кожному кроці, і без неї ми жити не могли б. Коли ми щось робимо, ми віримо в доцільність нашої роботи, хоч це може бути й далеке від правди. Життя наше все засноване на вірі та довірливості. Ми в житті кроку вперед не зробили б, коли б жили без віри та без довірливості один одному. Скажемо, питаємося перехожих у місті про вулицю, і ми віримо, й ідемо так, як нам показано, хоч це може й розходиться з правдою. І таких випадків – сотні денно в кожного з нас. Люди на півдні зовсім не знають морозів і можуть не вірити, що вода може обернутися у твердий стан, бо цього ніколи не бачили. Але хоч вони й не вірять, проте ж лід таки існує. Давній грецький історик Геродот описує, що йому розповідали самовидці, ніби на півночі від Чорного моря в повітрі пір’я літає. Чи вірив цьому Геродот, чи ні, а проте сніг, тут прийнятий за пір’я, таки існує. Отак часом люди не вірять у Бога, хоч про віру в Нього нічого не знають. Вони не вірять не зі свого глибоко передуманого переконання, але просто з моди, або ворожої безбожницької агітації, бо чули про це від інших. Отже, їхнє безвір’я не походить із досвіду, але з необдуманого наслідування. І чи ж ці безвірні можуть похвалитися глибоким знанням свого духового життя? Взагалі ж ми більше вивчаємо життя матеріяльне, а духове, звичайно, занедбуємо, через що й віру мало удоводнюємо.

IV. Без віри нема науки

Усе найкраще, що маємо у своїй культурі, постало завдяки вірі людини, що вона задумане сповнить, хоч повного переконання про це вона й не мала. Вірою кораблі ходять по морі, а підводні човни під водою. Вірою людина літає на літаках, немов пташка. Вірою повстали потяги на землі, а кораблі на морі. Через віру відкрилося нам те, про що трудно було й мріяти, бо ж фактів на це не було: електрика, телеграф, телефон, радіо. Через безфактну віру повстала вся наша матеріяльна культура. Наука двигається й вірою, а не самими фактами. У кожній науці є відділи, яких фактами не доведеш. Напр. астрономія розповідає про будову всесвіту поза землею. А які докази тієї будови? Чи справді ці докази непомильно правдиві? Чи не змінюється взагалі наука кожних 50100 літ? Але ми все ж таки вважаємо астрономію за науку й віримо в неї, хоч доказів наочних і не бачимо. У науці ще недавно панувала т.зв. атомістична теорія, що ніби то матерія складається з неподільних атомів. А сьогодні наука довела, що й атоми діляться далі. І хіба через це наука перестала чи перестає бути наукою? Тепер навчають, що матерія складається з протонів, які вічно рухаються. Але хто їх рухає, цього наука не встановила й установити не може, коли не визнає Первопричини всіх рухів – Бога. З недавнього часу сильно шириться наука вченого Айштайна про відносність усієї нашої науки, всього нашого знання. Але наука від цього не перестала бути наукою, хіба тільки люди глибше переконалися, що й науці не все відоме остаточно.

Взагалі треба пам’ятати, що наука зростає на різних теоріях та гіпотезах (припущеннях), які ми звичайно

приймаємо в науці на віру. І хоч теорії й гіпотези звичайно недоказувальні, проте без них не було б зросту в науках, бо й через гіпотези та теорії доходимо до прав

ди. І треба завжди пам’ятати, що є край нашому знанню й умінню, поза який людина переступити не в силі. Лю

дина й наука зробили безконечно багато, – легко тепер літають у повітрі, а плавають по воді й під водою, проте наука ніяк не може створити найменшої й найпростішої

живої істоти. Наука оживити нікого й нічого не може. Найсильніший науковець простого черв’яка таки не створить. І не прийнявши віри в Первопричину всього

живого, наука не двигнеться вперед, а все стоятиме перед брамою, за якою – Бог. Отож, без віри нема ані звичайного буденного жит

тя, ані науки. А коли так, чому ж наші безвірники легко живуть вірою в житті й у науці, легко приймають життєву й наукову віру, але відкидають віру в Бога?

Це явно непослідовно, хоч власне на цьому й зростає безвір’я. Коли ближче приглянемось до життя, то побачимо,

що ввесь т.зв. поступ у ньому заснований на вірі, бо людина вірить у свої сили, що Бог їх освятить і поблагословить на все добре. Віра таким чином допроваджує

до поступу, вона конче необхідна в житті. Звичайно навчають, що віра й наука – це зовсім про

тилежні речі, бо наука основана на фактах та доказах, а віра якраз цього не потребує. Як ми оце бачили, справа зовсім не так: і наука дуже часто обходиться без фактів

та доказів, а живе самими теоріями та гіпотезами. Ось тому поміж вірою та наукою нема прірви, як твердять безвірні. Навпаки – віра двигає й наукою.

CHRIST PANTOCRATOR

One of the most typical and most meaningful symbols ofour Church is the icon of Christ Pantocrator, the Lord Om-nipotent, that appears in the dome of most OrthodoxChurches. It is the image of the glorified Christ reigning onHis heavenly throne.

In the catacombs, the underground tombs where theearly Christians worshipped, Christ was depicted as theGood Shepherd Who protected His flock. In an age wherethe Huns, the Vandals, and the Mohammedans threatenedthe very fabric of the newly established Church, the earlyChristians needed an emphasis on the Almighty God Whosat enthroned as Emperor, Monarch, Ruler, surrounded byHis heavenly court of saints and angels and Who domi-nated His flock. It is something similar to the emphasis wefind in the beautiful hymn:

“This is my Father’s world:Though the wrong seems oft’ so strong,He is the ruler yet.”

Based On “Revelation”

The word “Pantocrator” and the idea behind it appear inthe book of Revelation. We hear God saying in Rev. 1:18, “Iam the Alpha and the Omega, saith the Lord Who is, andWho was, and Who is to come, the Pantocrator (Almighty)”:The use of the multi-colored band that we usually seearound the figure of the Pantocrator in the dome is basedon Rev. 4:3 where the iris or rainbow is said to surround thethrone of God “...and round the throne was a rainbow thatlooked like an emerald.”

Normally, the icon of Christ Pantocrator is the most re-mote of all the conventional poses, Christ is distant from us,and some times His face is stern. Yet in Serbia we find anicon of the Pantocrator with dancing eyes. His face is sharp,His mouth tiny with the effort of suppressing a smile, his fin-gers thin and dancing] where they hold the book. The Gos-

pel book is closed, but Jesus knows what is inside: thegood news of God's love, of the destruction of sin anddeath, of life everlasting, hence the smile on His face.

The Entire Church Present

It is noteworthy that the highest point of the Church is reserved for our Lord. His Mother and all the other saints, an-gels and prophets are depicted on the walls immediatelybelow the Pantocrator. Finally, the floor level of the Churchis reserved for us – the members of the Church militant.Thus around the figure of Christ in the dome is gathered Hisentire Church both that in heaven as symbolized by thesaints in the icons and that on earth as expressed by thepresence of the living members. This gives expression toour faith that at each liturgy, the entire Church is present;those who have passed on into the other life as well as our-selves. That is why we take the opportunity to rememberour departed loved ones in memorial prayers. As part of theChurch Triumphant they are present at each liturgy, wherethe entire Church – that in heaven and that on earth –merges and comes together to glorify and sing praises tothe Risen Christ, the Pantocrator.

Victory of Christ

The figure of the Pantocrator in the dome serves to ex-press also the victory of Christ's Resurrection which is socentral to our Orthodox Christian faith. It is to dramatize thisvictory that the figure of Christ is placed at the highest pointof the Church, giving full expression to the great victoryhymn of the early Church as quoted by Paul in his letter tothe Philippians: “He (Jesus) emptied Himself taking theform of a servant ...and became obedient unto death, evendeath on a cross… Therefore God has highly exalted Him(lifted Him up) and bestowed on Him the name which isabove every name, that at the name of Jesus every kneeshould bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to theglory of God the father” (Phil. 2:7-11).

His Eyes Upon Us

One of the reasons the Pantocrator is suspended overus in the dome is to remind us of His all-pervading pres-ence in the universe as we come to worship Him. His pres-ence, especially in Church, hovers over us as we pray to-gether. He hovers above us listening to our prayers. Just asa mother cannot take her eyes oft hei children, so His eyesare upon each of us. He looks down and sees not only whois present in the congregation but also who is absent. Oneof His greatest heartaches must be to see how many of Hischildren do not come to be with Him on His day, Kyriaki, theDay of the Lord. On any given Sunday more than two-thirdsof His people are absent from worship. How many times Hemust have heard all the lame excuses I so often hear as apriest: “I may not come to Church, but I worship God athome every day.” I cannot imagine a person who really wor-ships God at home every day, not coming to church onSunday to be with his Lord, to consummate his love by re-ceiving Jesus in the Sacrament of Communion. We worshipGod truly not only with our tongue but also with our feel Ifour heart is in the right place, it will propel our feet eachSunday to be in the right place.

I have discovered that the easiest person in the world todeceive is ourself – and the devil really helps us here.There are people who think they are still Christians whenthey seldom if ever come to the liturgy on Sunday, seldom ifever receive His precious Body and Blood unto forgivenessof sins and life everlasting.

“Let Us Lift Up Our Hearts”

As I look up at the Pantocrator Christ each Sunday inthe liturgy when I say the words, “Let us lift up our hearts,”the thought comes to me that I am always only a heartbeataway from appearing before Him in person. I think of theSecond Coming and Judgment Day when I shall appear be-fore Him to give an account of my life. It is a very sobering

experience; an experience thai helps me practice the pres-ence of God all week long. I don’t gel this if I stay home onSunday. In fact, if I stay away long enough, I forget God al-together. Other things begin to take His place in my life. Ibecome spiritually dead, alive to the world and dead toChrist.

How Great!

The Pantocrator Christ serves to remind us of the maj-esty and greatness of God. In fact, as one gazes at thePantocrator in the dome, one cannot fail to be impressed bythe great power and magnificence suggested by His neckand shoulders. Some years ago a person visited the obser-vatory atop Mt. Wilson in Southern California. On the wallwas a picture of a star. The following words were writtenbeneath the star:

“The light of this star began its journey towardearth 30,000 years ago. It only recently reached thisplanet and was photographed for the first time at Mt.Wilson.”Almost breathtaking: travelling at 14 billion miles per

day! And it took 30,000 years to arrive! And who made thatstar? Who else but the Pantocrator!

The same God Who made the stars holds in His handevery breath we draw (Dan. 5:23). Pantocrator!

A great preacher said just before he died, “We havepreached a great gospel, but remember Jesus Christ isgreater than anything we have ever said about Him.” Panto-crator!

We Go To Where We Belong

Each Sunday, as God’s people, we gather around theOne Who loves us. Each Sunday we come to Him to Whomwe belong. We gather in the place where we belong: inChurch under His Presence. If we do not come to church,we are acknowledging that we do not belong to Him. We

may belong to money, to golf, to fishing, to hunting, to foot-ball, to TV. We may belong to the world, but not to God. Wecome to church each Sunday to acknowledge whose weare and where we belong. Just as ці tl« end of each day we go to where we belong – home so on il» I cud's Day we goto where we belong – the Church. We gather m worshipand bow the knee and the heart to the Pantocrator. This iswhy Jesus said that at the Resurrection there will be aseparation of the lambs from the goats, i.e., people willgravitate to where they have always belonged, either to-ward the presence of God or away from the presence ofGod, either toward heaven or hell.

A father was out in a potato patch late one night to stealpotatoes. He looked to the right, to the left, forward andbackward and seeing no one, he was about to start fillinghis sack when his little son who was with him said, “Dad,you forgot to look up.”

Erasing The Videotape

How often we, too, forget to look up. We forget thatthere is Someone Whose presence hovers over us not justwhen we come to church but constantly. The King – thePantocrator – is always in the congregation. One day weshall all appear before Him and He will play for us a video-tape of all that we have said and done in life. How would welike to see on videotape in God's very presence all of oursins and hear all the terrible words we have spoken. Forsome of us it will be a moment of extreme embarrassmentthat will lead to eternal separation from God. But God in Hisgreat love for us died on the cross and was resurrected toforgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.He calls on us now to repent of our sins so that those em-barrassing episodes may be completely erased from thevideotape of our lives, so that we may appear before Himwith a clean tape, cleansed and washed by the Blood of theLamb.

DELEGATION OF THE

UKRAINIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH OF CANADA

TO THE ECUMENICAL PATRIARCHATE

Istanbul:

In response to the gracious invitation of His All-Holiness,

Bartholomew I, the Ecumenical Patriarch, to our Primate,

His Eminence, the Most Reverend Metropolitan Yurij and

his co-workers, to the Patriarchate to visit and present and

discuss matters of mutual importance regarding our Ukrain-

ian Orthodox Church of Canada and its mission in Canada

and in the world, a delegation composed of our three active

Hierarchs, as well as members of the Consistory of our

Church and its standing Inter-Church Relations Committee,

has arrived in Istanbul on February 7, 2013.

Metropolitan Yurij and Bishops Andriy and Ilarion are

accompanied by the Chancellor, Rt. Rev. Protopresbyter

Victor Lakusta, and the following Consistory Board mem-

bers approved by the Presidium with His Eminence’s bless-

ing: Very Rev. Taras Udod, Victor Hetmanczuk and Dr. Pe-

ter Kondra, all members of the Presidium of the Consistory,

which was elected at the Sobor of our Church in 2010.

Vasyl’ Balan was also to have accompanied the delegation

but was not able to attend for reasons of health. Members

of the Inter-Church Relations Committee also attending are:

Rt. Rev. Dr. Ihor Kutash (Chair) and Yaroslaw Lozowchuk.

Our delegation was met at the Airport by the Ukrainian

Ambassador to Turkey, His Excellency Bohdan Yaremenko,

and by the Very Reverend Archdeacon of the Patriarchate,

Maximos (Veanopoulos) as well as newly-consecrated Met-

ropolitan Athenagoras (Chrysanis) of Kydaniai, the chief li-

brarian, recently in charge of the logistics and order of the

Consecration of Holy Myrrh at the Patriarchate at which our

Primate, Metropolitan Yurij, also participated. The Mother

Church was also represented by the Rt. Rev. Archimandrite

Vissarion (Komzias) who holds the title of Hierokyrax

(Grand Preacher) of the Ecumenical Throne.

After a short repose, the delegation was treated to a

wonderful supper at the Eresin Taxim Hotel where we are

staying. Metropolitan Athenagoras and Archimandrite Vis-

sarion were our hosts.

Our program in the next few days will include visits to

the magnificent Hagia Sophia and other sites of profound

spiritual significance as well as audiences with His All-

Holiness and members of the Patriarchal Committee con-

cerning Inter-Orthodox Issues.

We shall continue to report on our visit as it unfolds. A

major portion of the costs of this historic visit are being cov-

ered by Foundation grants (Ukrainian Orthodox Foundation

and SUS Foundation) and donations from Consistory Board

members and other members of our Church.

UKRAINIAN COMMUNITY MEMBER RECEIVES MEDALMississauga News, January 31, 2013

Mississauga’s Katherine Sencio received a pleasantsurprise during the Ukrainian Women’s Association’s an-nual general meeting on Sunday when she was presentedwith a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Sencio was given the award by Mississauaga East-Cooksville MPP Dipika Damerla at the St. VolodymyrUkrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Toronto.

The medal honours the 60 years of the monarch’s reign,and is awarded to Canadians who have made a differencein the community.

Damerla commented on Sencio’s dedication to theUkrainian community, serving the Ukrainian Women’s As-sociation of Canada’s Knyahynia Olha branch for the past25 years.

З нагоди 60літнього ювілею на престолі Англії і цілої Британської Спільноти її Величности Королеви Єлизавети ІІ виготовлено спеціяльну медалю “The Diamond Jubilee Medal”. Добр. Катерина Сенцьо одержала її з рук MPP Mississauga достойної Дипіки Дамерли (Dipikа Damerla) як заслужена членка Союзу Українок Канади, котра більше як 25 років служить своєю працею, своїм знанням цілій українській громаді, а також Канаді. Медалю було вручено на Річних зборах С.У.К., відділ ім. св. Ольги.

ПЕРЕДРІЗДВЯНИЙ БАЗАР 2012

Як щороку Союз Українок Канади, відділ св. кн. Ольги провів свій передріздвяний базар – 16 грудня 2012 р. Базар – це велика спільна праця багатьох членок відділу. Вже довший час перед тим Господарчий Комітет на чолі з п. Олею Адамець приготовляє вареники, солодке, тістечка, а передовсім різноманітні страви, щоб було чим вчащати гостей. На базарі можна було купити багато дечого, не тільки поїсти, купити до дому вареники, голубці, печиво, але також багато речей, а зокрема гарні намиста, коралі, декоративні нашийники, а також елегантні торбинки. Можна також було винайняти стіл і багато “підприємців” з того скористали. Думаю, що багато присутніх чекало на розігравку, котру вже традиційно переводить Голова Базарового Комітету. Вітаємо щасливців, котрі виграли гарні призи, а п. М. Калимін, член собору св. Димитрія виграв чудовий кошик, повен різноманітних, смаковитих речей. Дякуємо нашим спонсорам, завдяки котрим ми мали змогу “збагатити” наші виграші. На закінчення базару була розігравка – Bingo. Присутні брали участь, зокрема діти. Вони також найбільше тішились з виграних гарних призів. Вели цю гру п. Надя Гункевич і др. Лелія Сулима. Щира подяка усім, котрі причинились до проведення цього успішного базару, а головне велика подяка усім, хто прийшов, щось купував, грав на лотерії, бінґо. А найбільша подяка п. Олі Янжулі і Тамарі Кошарній – співголовам Базарового Комітету, котрі ще далеко перед тим добряче натрудились, але їх труд закінчився гарним успіхом. Запрошуємо усіх на наш передвеликодній базар – 28 квітня 2013 р. Буде ще більше всього, ще більш цікаво і смачно.

ПЕРЕДРІЗДВЯНИЙ БАЗАР 2012

С П І В Ч У Т Т Я

Ділимося сумною вісткою, що 26 січня 2013 р. відійшла у вічність довголітня членка Союзу Українок Канади, відділ св. кн. Ольги – св. п. Ліда Равриш. Покійна св. п. Ліда довгі роки працювала у Відділі, зокрема під час “Каравани” в нашій церкві. Багато членок, прихожан Катедри її пам’ятає, як елегантно вона вміла удекорувати залю, підкреслити чар української вишивки. Також покійна допомагала в багатьох господарчих справах. Як говориться, “всюди, де було потрібно.” Oстаннім часом перебувала в пансіоні ім. Івана Франка. Ми там її відвідували, згадували, як було колись, в давні добрі часи. Родині покійної св. п. Ліди Равриш передаємо слова щирого співчуття. Нехай канадська земля буде їй легкою.
