Get ready to board this train because it waits for no one.

On December 25, 2016 we lost a long time member and a

very treasured kupuna in the passing of Aunty Josephine Lum. Aunty “Josie” has moved on to a better place where she is having a jolly good time playing her ukulele and singing her favorite Hawaiian songs. I’d like to send my prayers out to the Lum and Low ‘Ohana. Services for Aunty Josie is on Wednesday, February 1, 2017; viewing at 9:30am Mililani Mortuary Park Maka‘i and 10:30am service; internment will follow at Kaneohe Hawaiian Memorial Park, at about 2:00pm.

PHHCC donates to Na Alaka‘i Club The gifts were donated to the "Na Alaka‘i Club," a program supported by FBI Agent, Dr. Arnold La'anui, FBI agent, a special guest of PHHCC, who was invited to speak at our December Christmas party meeting. I'm sure everyone in attendance was impressed, as much as I, by what he does and how his efforts have impacted the Waipahu community. Through his good deeds, the future of this particular area and especially the lives of it's children have improved dramatically and turned a negative into positive, resulting in more students graduating from high school, more students going on to college, less dropouts. Donated prizes were very well received and according to(Penny Kalua, says Na Alaka‘i club (is at Waipahu HS) and conducts service projects and socials around the Waipahu community; open to anyone who is interested in giving back to the community; is involved in events such as Campus Beautification Day and coming up with games and activities to play with children around the Waipahu community), Dr. Laanui was excited that the gifts could be used to provide interaction, the first step in breaking down barriers. Value (of donated items), not including ribbon items: guesstimate $80+ Just a little background on the reason for the gifts being on hand in the first place, was due to the summons of a chairperson for the December meeting by 2016 President Toni Lee. Since, no-one had signed-up nor did anyone come forward to take on the responsibility, both Momi Phillips and Kau‘i Kaleo offered some help to Lorna Pacheco (designated cook). We, Momi & I thought it might be fun to introduce a new game: a Christmas Tree Decorating contest - so, we went about gathering what we had on hand and put together things that could be used to decorate the trees which led to prizes. It was decided that she would decorate and I would concentrate on the tree contest. Because of time

11

constraints, the contest did not take place, and so what better thing to do than to give the prizes away to the "Na Alaka'i Club". These prizes consisted of (2) boxes of the Board game "Wheel of Fortune", a ceramic candy dish, a set of (6) jiggers, a deck of cards, a box of puzzle, a mini photo album. Additional prizes were: (7) ribbon trees and (8) ribbon angels that were used at the last minute notification to decorate the tables. The trees to decorate in the contest were provided by Lorna Pacheco (8) and Dan Kalili (12) and prizes donated by Momi Phillips and Kaui Kaleo.
