2013 a year of hope and learning

2013 A Year of Hopeand Learning
2013 has been a tremendous year of growth and engagement. We are thrilled to be working
on new projects and forming vital partnerships around the world. Together we are providing
educational opportunities that break the cycle of poverty. Joining us this year are CellMark
partners Kimberly Clark, CMPC, Fr. Meyers Sohn, Nikko Steel, and others.
Three of the many projects we’ve worked on this year are highlighted in the following pages:
In collaboration with Kimberly Clark’s Social Responsibility Team, we are now increasing
our work in Nicaragua. We are excited for the next phases of our collaboration in 2014.
Meanwhile, in Mumbai, Umang Charitable Trust has built a new innovative school to serve
children with learning disabilities. Using a free-to-fee model of tuition, the school is ensuring
its long-term financial sustainability. Back in the US, our hearts remain broken for the families
who lost children and loved ones at Sandy Hook Elementary School. We were privileged to
play a small part in the healing process through the funding of the children’s book, Pepper’s
Dragons. We hope many families will be able to find some solace in its pages.
I want to express my admiration and thanks for the commitment and hard work of the
PaperSeed Committees comprised of CellMark employees working in their local communities:
Norwalk and Stamford, Connecticut; San Rafael and Huntington Beach, California; and
Vancouver, Canada.
If you share our commitment to alleviating poverty through education, please consider
partnering with us or making a donation at http://paperseed.org/donate/.
On behalf of all of us at PaperSeed, I wish you a prosperous new year!

Greetingsfrom PaperSeed!
Sandy Hook, Connecticut, USAHealing Hearts through Story
On December 12, 2012, Sandy Hook, Connecticut was shaken to its core by the tragic
deaths of 26 members of the town’s elementary school community—many of them young
children. In the wake of this unfathomable violence emerged a story of hope, Pepper’s
Dragons. Author, Dr. Stacia Bjarnason, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist, and illustrator Irene
Ruth created the book as a tool for healing. In the story a bunny named Pepper loses many
of his friends to a fiery dragon, much like the children of Sandy Hook lost their friends and
teachers to the deeply troubled shooter. The story explores the feelings of loss and con-
fusion that accompany such a sudden, senseless event. Through the story’s beautifully
illustrated characters and non-threatening language, parents and children have had an
opportunity to talk about the event and begin the healing process. PaperSeed and CellMark
covered the expenses of designing, printing and binding the book, enabling all families,
schools and libraries in Sandy Hook to have copies.
Managua, NicaraguaProviding a Safe Place to Learn
The children of La Comarca Cedro Galan were eager to learn. But the local public school
was in a dangerous state of disrepair. Windows and doors needed replacing, restrooms
needed upgrading, and walls needed painting. It was hard for teachers to teach and stu-
dents to learn in such an environment. With support from PaperSeed and Kimberly-Clark,
the school underwent major renovations. With upgraded facilities, including new bathrooms
and a hand-washing station, as well as instruction on hygiene to stem the spread of illness,
the students are now safe and ready to learn. In phase two of the project, a new library will
be furnished and three teachers will receive training in library science, bringing even more
opportunities for education to students of the Pedro Davila School.
“Now the girls and boys will have the opportunity to study in clean, well-equipped classrooms. Our commitment is to care for and protect our new facilities so many students will have the opportunity to receive a good education here.”
Professor Eddy Quinderia Sandin, Director, Pedro Davila School, Managua, Nicaragua
Mumbai, IndiaEducating Disabled Kids Close to Home
Children with autism and other learning disabilities need specialized care and instruction.
Traditional schools outfitted with only desks and chalkboards don’t allow for the kinds of
therapeutic activities essential to educating kids with special needs. So Dr. Bhawana Kerkar
of the Umang Charitable Trust opened a special education school in Kandivali and a spe-
cial education program at the BMC school in North Mumbai. These programs were doing
a great job of educating kids from the immediate community. But kids on the other side of
Mumbai had to take public transportation in rush hour traffic to get to school—a situation
that was unsafe and untenable. With support from PaperSeed, a new school has been
opened in Bhayander on the east side of Mumbai. Now disabled students from that part of
town have a brand-new school that is close, convenient, and designed especially for their
educational needs. And since the new school has opened up seats in the original programs,
even more kids are being served. Through this specialized education, disabled students
are building the skills necessary to transition into mainstream schools or live independently.
“Getting all therapies under one roof and quality education at Bhayander for my child was a dream for me.”
Mrs. Manju Prakash Tiwari, Parent
“It has been extremely satisfying to hear the many heartwarming stories of the children and families that have been able to use this remarkable book as part of their ongoing healing process.”
Glenn Schicker, Sandy Hook parent and CellMark employee
