The Delegation of theEuropean Union to Malaysia
The EU in the World Today
The European Union is a single market without internal barriers, which means there is free circulation of goods, services and capital, as well as people and culture. Europe has always been home to different peoples and cultures. The EU sees ethnic and cultural diversity as an asset.

EUROPEAN FILM FESTIVAL ‘19
The EU, through its diplomatic service the European External Action Service, maintains diplomatic relations with nearly all countries in the world, including Malaysia, and undertakes a range of actions with strategic partners, key international players, and emerging and developing powers. It plays important roles in diplomacy, the promotion of human rights, trade, development and humanitarian aid and working with multilateral organisations.
As the diplomatic mission of the European Union, the Delegation’s task is to promote closer ties with Malaysia by providing an efficient and reliable communication channel between the EU and Malaysian authorities, business, educational institutions and civil society.
The Delegation also promotes people- to-people contacts and highlights Europe’s cultural and linguistic diversity.
The EU Delegation works in close contact with the Embassies of the individual EU Member States present in Malaysia and promotes the EU’s common positions and policies in the areas of EU competence.
For more information on the Delegation, its activities and events, and important and relevant events in Europe, please visit the website of the Delegation of the European Union to Malaysia: http://eeas.europa.eu/delegations/malaysia

PENANG
Visionary leaders came together to create economic and political stability to ensure long term peace in Europe after the Second World War. The EU has grown from 6 to 28 Member States since 1957 after the six founding countries - Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands - created the European Coal & Steel Community.
The EU has a network of bilateral and multilateral agreements covering most countries and regions of the world and encourages free trade as a medium for growth and prosperity. It is one of the key global economic players and is the world’s largest integrated economy. It annually spends millions of euros in development and humanitarian assistance in all five continents, making it the world’s largest development aid donor.
Home to various races and cultures, the EU sees ethnic and cultural diversity as an asset and its people are bound together by the values of peace, democracy, prosperity, stability and the rule of law.
HISTORY OF THE EUROPEAN UNION EVENTS
EUROPEAN FILM FESTIVAL ‘19EUROPEAN FILM FESTIVAL ‘19 AMBASSADOR’S FOREWORD
The European Union Film Festival (EUFF) is back once again in selected Golden Screen Cinemas. This year is our 20th anniversary in Malaysia and the EUFF remains one of the most anticipated international film festivals in the country with its showcase of the dynamism, breadth and innovation of contemporary European cinema, as well as the cultural diversity of Europe, with acclaimed films from all over Europe.
Ambassador’s Foreword
AMBASSADOR’S FOREWORD
H.E. Maria Castillo FernandezAmbassador & Head of the EU Delegation to Malaysia
Since we first started, the EUFF has brought together film enthusiasts, students, families and even people looking for their first foreign-language film experience. Action, drama, romance, comedy, adventure, family films and documentaries, we have it all. The wide range of screenings reflects European creativity and diversity and has something for everyone's tastes.
The 19 films this year come from 15 European countries. The festival line-up also features films from non-European Union countries Switzerland and Norway. This year, most of the films are collaborations or joint-productions between European countries. Many are courtesy of a project by the European Commission managed by a Consortium formed by Goethe-Institut (in the lead), Institut Français and Cineuropa, the portal for the promotion of the European cinema. These films bring to life the fact that Europe, just like Malaysia, is united in our diversity and highlight that story-telling and art have no barriers across cultures and countries.
All the films in this festival have not only won prestigious awards of their own countries, but they are also winners of international awards from the Tokyo International Film Festival, European Film Awards, Berlin International Film Festival, and more. You can find a full list of honours in this booklet.
Europe has never been just one, but many cultures, languages and lifestyles. Through EUFF, we celebrate our cultural diversity. We put culture at the centre of our international cultural relations as this is an important part of the EU's role as a global actor.
We hope that these movies not only entertain, inspire and inform you about European culture but also open your eyes to how European and Malaysian people are both different and similar at the same time. This is a crucial message we share with Malaysia's multicultural society and heritage.
I hope that you will continue to support and celebrate European culture as we do the same in Malaysia. Saya berharap semua akan menikmati filem-filem Eropah kami ini. Selamat menonton!
