MAY GOD REWARD YOUR GENEROSITY

FROM THE DESK OF FATHER MAC Today I am writing about Catholic education. St. Cyril School has a proud 70-year tradition of excellence in Catho-lic education. Our school and Catholic schools across the United States have been a substantial resource not only for the Church but for society as a whole. Catholic schools are not just a concern for Catholics and it is not accurate to describe our schools as “private.” Catholic schools serve an irreplaceable public good. Many Catholic schools are in ur-ban or inner-city neighborhoods and serve mostly racial mi-nority students as well as non-Catholic students. Sadly, Catholic education in the United States is under threat. COVID-19 has contributed to the permanent closure of 138 Catholic schools across 23 states. Recent surveys show another ten percent of Catholic schools are uncertain if they can open their doors this fall. That means as many as 500 or more Catholic schools could be in jeopardy. Our school is not in danger of closing but we are facing severe financial pressure due to the pandemic. Catholic schools urgently need help in this uncertain time. The U.S. Catholic Bishops recently urged Catholics to con-tact members of Congress in support of Catholic schools. Almost 100,000 messages were delivered and that effort paid off as an emergency school choice bill has now been introduced in Washington. The “School Choice Now Act” would provide one-time, emergency funding for scholarship-granting organizations in each state and permanent dollar-for-dollar federal tax credits for contributions to scholarship-granting organizations. The U.S. Catholic Bishops now invite us to urge the U.S. Sen-ate to include aid for Catholic schools in the emergency re-lief package currently being negotiated. As the Senate pre-pares its next COVID relief bill, we are asking for immediate assistance through federally-funded scholarships. Please contact your Senators today to request support of the School Choice Now Act in the relief bill. You can visit our parish website or Facebook page to find a link to send a message to the U.S. Senate to express your support for this crucial financial aid to support Catholic education. You can help secure the future of Catholic education in our country and help ensure that our parish school can continue fulfilling its mission of providing an excellent Catholic edu-cation here in the Encino area for many years to come. I want to thank our principal Ms. Feather Gentry and the dedicated faculty staff of St. Cyril of Jerusalem School for their incredibly hard work during these difficult times. I am very proud of our school and I am confident that with God’s grace and our concerted, collaborative effort, St. Cyril’s School and Catholic schools throughout our country will have a robust future! YOURS IN CHRIST, REV. EBEN MACDONALD, PASTOR

SAFEGUARDING THE CHILDREN Did you Know?

UNDERSTANDING RELATIONAL BULLYING Relational bullying is unwarranted, persistent, unwelcome behavior in the form of criticism, isolation, or false allega-tions and rumors that damage the targeted person’s rela-tionships. Relational bullying includes social exclusion, gossip, and withholding friendship, and it can be devastat-ing for children and teens. These behaviors are more sub-tle than traditional bullying, often happening out of sight or earshot of adults. But this bullying requires intervention and action. Talk to your children about these behaviors, especially if you notice them being left out of social activ-ities and friendships. For more information, request a copy of the VIRTUS article “Relational Bullying” at https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/. JOAN VIENNA– DIRECTOR OF SAFEGUARDING THE CHILDREN [email protected]

Pope Francis asks young people to reach out to the elderly.

“In the memory of Saints Joachim and Anne, the grandpar-ents of Jesus, I would like to invite young people to make a

gesture of tenderness towards the elderly, especially the most lonely ones in homes and residences, those who have

not seen their loved ones for many months,”

Pope Francis suggested that young people can use the “inventiveness of love” to “send a hug” to an elderly person

in their community by making a phone or video call, sending a card, or making a visit when

safety measures allow.
