PAGE TWO SAINT CYRIL OF JERUSALEM OCTOBER 6TH 2019
From The Desk of Father MacFrom The Desk of Father Mac Each October the Church in the United States celebrates Respect Life Month, and today is Respect Life Sunday. Each year, the U.S. Bishops launch a new theme to help Catholics understand and honor the dignity of every human person. This year's theme, “Christ, Our Hope in Every Season of life,” reminds us that we are called to cherish, defend, and protect those who are most vulnerable, from the beginning of life to its end, and at every point in between. From the time we are knit together in our mothers’ wombs until we draw our final breaths, each moment of our lives is a gift from God. While every season of life brings its own challenges and trials, each season also brings new opportu-nities to grow in our relationship with God. Today the gift of life is threatened in countless ways. Those who are most vulnerable, rather than receiving the protec-tion they deserve, are all too often seen as a burden and as expendable. As new attacks on human life continue to emerge, we can be tempted to despair, but Christ instead offers us unfailing hope. Hope is not false optimism or empty positivity. Christian hope is something much more profound and goes to the very depths of our identity as followers of Christ. Hope is the virtue “by which we desire the kingdom of heaven and eternal life as our happiness, placing our trust in Christ's promises and relying not on our own strength, but on the help of the grace of the Holy Spirit” (Catechism, 1817). Like us, Christ entered the world through the womb of a woman. He willingly experienced the fullness of human suf-fering. He breathed his last on the Cross at Calvary in order that He might save us. Therefore, “God is the foundation of hope: not any god, but the God who has a human face and who has loved us to the end” (Spe salvi, 31). Christians know “they have a future: it is not that they know the de-tails of what awaits them, but they know in general terms that their life will not end in emptiness” (SS, 2). For this reason, a woman experiencing a difficult pregnancy can find strength to welcome her precious child into the world. A man facing a terminal diagnosis can see the end of his earthly life as the beginning of eternal life with Christ. The Church teaches us that “the one who has hope lives differently” (SS, 2). Christ’s promise of salvation does not mean that we will be spared from suffering. Rather, the promise of salvation ensures that even in the darkest mo-ments of our lives, we will be given the strength to perse-vere. By virtue of this Christian hope, we can face any chal-lenge or trial. When the seas of life swell and we are bat-tered by the waves, hope allows us to remain anchored in the heart of God. May we hold fast to Christ our hope, from the beginning of life to its very end! YOURS IN CHRIST, REV. EBEN MACDONALD, PASTOR

ST CYRIL OF JERUSALEM PARISH STEWARDSHIP SEPTEMBER 29TH
““For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control.” 2 T 1:7
Many of us compartmentalize our Faith; we bring it out only when we attend Mass or when we attend a parish event. Being a good Steward requires discipline and striving to put God first in everything, all the time. The next time you are at a neigh-borhood party, at work or out shopping, would your actions signal to others that you are a good and faithful servant of our Lord?
Our Weekly Collection Goal is $13,000 Thank you

SAFEGUARDING THE CHILDREN UNDERSTANDING COMMUNITY GROOMING
Like the psychological grooming we discussed last week, community grooming is another way a predator inserts himself into the life of his child victim. In community grooming, the pred-ator develops a rapport with the community
surrounding his victims, appearing to be kind, generous, and caring. This can often lead to increased levels of trust from adults around the victim, and increased access to the victim. The predator uses manipulation and lies to build a false image of good, which makes it harder for victims to come forward to express discomfort or report an allega-tion. For more information on community grooming, get a copy of the VIRTUS® article “The Stockholm Syndrome and Victims of Abuse, Part II,” contact us. email:[email protected]
EXTENSION MAGAZINE The Fall 2019 issue of Catholic Extension magazine presents the theme of ENCOUNTER, which is when we step outside of our comfort zone and meet face to face with others so we may better under-stand the mystery of God in the least among us. In these exchanges, when we break through the hurdles of isolation and indifference, our minds and hearts are stretched, and we are forever changed for the better. Pick up a free copy of Extension magazine in the literature racks at the church exits. Its inspiring stories will help you understand the diversity and scope of the Catholic Church in America—in places where faith is strong, but resources are limited. A digital version of the magazine can be found at:
www.catholicextension.org/extension-magazine-newest. RELIGION, RACE AND SCANDAL: HOW DO WE SUSTAIN FAITH? Our invited speakers, Sr. LaReine-Marie Nosely and Dr. Kim Harris will lead an interactive discussion on how the
church is challenged in dealing with intense social chang-es that we are living with now. We will consider and dis-cuss how the church is sustaining the faithful or lagging behind in important social issues such as race, immigration and the clergy sex abuse scandals. Saturday, October 26th, 9 am– 12:30pm. The cost is $40. To register, call 310-333-2799 or email crs@lmu,edu For a full description of all their programs, visit extension.lmu.edu/crs.
