From The Desk of Father MacFrom The Desk of Father Mac I remember visiting with my 5-year old nephew Chase on one particular Christmas past. I pointed at the porcelain Nativity set and asked: “Chase, do you know what that is?” He replied: “Fragile!” His response is humorous but it ex-presses an important truth about the Holy Family and about our family life.
Today’s Feast of the Holy Family reminds us that the family Jesus was born into was fragile and faced many challenges. Not only did they have the craziest home-birth story of all time, they quickly ended up fleeing to Egypt as refugees, as we hear in today’s Gospel. Anyone who has traveled with a small child knows it isn’t easy. Imagine the stress of travel-ing by donkey with a screaming baby! Remember, too, that because of the way the pregnancy came about, Joseph and Mary almost called off their engagement. Joseph learned soon enough that his future was going to be unique. Howev-er, despite all of these challenges the Holy Family not only survived, — they thrived.
Being part of a family is a blessing, but it is also fragile. All families face challenges and difficulties. How do we stay together? Even more importantly, how do we not only stay together but thrive and enjoy each other? How can we grow together and make each other better? Let me share three lessons the Holy Family teaches us that can help our own family.
Give and deserve trust We know our family better than anyone which actually makes it hard to trust them sometimes because we tend to show the worst side of ourselves to those closest to us. The Holy Family shows that it doesn’t have to be that way. They always gave each other the benefit of the doubt. In our families, extending a little trust goes a long way and behav-ing towards our families in a manner deserving of trust is a sign of the respect that they deserve.
Encourage I grew up with four brothers and one sister. Our childhood was a constant competition and I don’t remember us en-couraging each other so much as trying to achieve victory over each other. Luckily, our parents helped us mature as we grew up. In Mary, we find the perfect example of a mother who encourages her son. In all the stories about the Holy Family, they’re never jealous or fighting for attention.
Always stay In a family, the heroes are the ones who stay. No matter the argument, the frustration, the disappointment. A strong family never gives up on each other. We see this in how Mary is present at every moment in her son’s life, both his triumphs and his tragedies. Family never abandons each other no matter how far one of the members falls. From this safe home environment, each of us is given the courage to go out into the world with confidence. My prayer is that the model of the Holy Family may help your family to not only survive, but thrive!

ST CYRIL OF JERUSALEM PARISH STEWARDSHIP
DECEMBER 15TH “Wives, be subordinate to your husbands…Husbands, love your wives…Children, obey your parents in every-thing…Fathers, do not provoke your children…” COLOSSIANS 3:18-21 Pope Francis said that Stewardship families, through their life of prayer and love, become “schools of true human growth.” Being credible witnesses of Christian love, especially that of family members, exerts the most positive influence on our children. We are all chil-dren of God, let us pray and love each other as God, Our Father, does for us.
Thank you for your generosity

SAFEGUARDING THE CHILDREN EVERYONE IS IN CHARGE OF THEIR OWN BODY
It is important to allow children to decline signs of physical affection if they are uncomfortable or don’t want to receive them. It’s also equally important to teach children that this rule works both ways — if someone does not want a hug or
a kiss, that decision should be respected. For young chil-dren who may be grabby or touchy-feely, this can be a tough lesson to instill, but it sets the groundwork for a critical understanding of the word “no” and how to react to it. Remind children about their own boundaries, and the boundaries of others, and reinforce ways to express love and friendship while respecting those boundaries.
